Roman Holiday (1953) - Full Reaction

Guys I loved it! I want to go to Rome now haha, add it to my POPtour :) Audrey Hepburn is soooo beautiful. I cannot stop thinking about THAT ENDING, trying to make peace. It was so sweet and romantic and steamy without being steamy and just what I needed! Hope you enjoy!

Roman Holiday (1953) - Full Reaction

Comments

This is pretty close to a perfect film. It's long been one of my favourites. The acting was superb, the chemistry between Audrey and Gregory was very believable and the story was super cute. I really loved your reaction... seeing it through your eyes and excitement. I had watched your YouTube reaction a while ago but decided to watch your full reaction now and was not disappointed. I agree that those two kisses between them were magical. This movie has so much charm!!

Phillip Bates

I am a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn. There are a lot of interesting facts about this film. Gregory Peck was a superstar (like todays Brad Pitt or Tom cruise) and he was so impressed with Audrey Hepburn's maiden performance he insisted that the titles of the film was " Introducing Audrey Hepburn, and not "With Audrey Hepburn" as he was convinced she would win an Oscar, Which she did for this film. The reason it was filmed in b/w as colur was very expensive and the studio had no idea it would be a massive success, winning pretty much all the Oscar's that year. Cassie, you were glowing all through the movie, that is the effect Audrey Hepburn has on you. You really can't belive it is the same actress in "My Fair L:ady" just shows her acting ability. It is very interesting how she got this role also, but I will let you google that. I did not know you had reacted to this until I completed your latest Poll Reaction. Great reaction, loved it.

William

I have always loved this movie. Audrey Hepburn was so sweet and beautiful and endearing with those beautiful eyes and smile. When I first saw this, I fell in love with the right way. And I can't say enough about Gregory Peck; he's one of my favorite actors. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite movies. The ending was heart-wrenching, but the bittersweet ending does add a human touch to this fairy tale story. They live in two different worlds, and it would have never worked. But we all wanted it to.

Eddie Perkins

This movie has the best smile of any scene of any movie. When she wakes in his apartment and realizes she had been there all night, she gives the greatest smile in history.

Clay F

I'm so glad you saw this movie. It's my favorite Audrey Hepburn film. It was really nice to see you so engrossed by it. Although it's not a happy ending, it could not have been more memorable.

SuicuneSol

One movie that doesn't get enough love is "Wait Until Dark". An excellent thriller.

David Martin

Excellent observation. The caste system of that time was much more ridged. It ended that way because the two people had a larger sense of who they were in the world. It would have become farce. Given what we knew about the characters it wouldn't have been believable.

Christopher Carr

The bittersweet ending surprised me. In retrospect, it somehow makes the whole movie feel... more raw, more real? Sadder for sure, yet maybe that real sadness also helps make every good thing they shared before the ending feel more real, more intense, more poignant than the usual Hollywood tale, if that makes sense. Not sure the movie would be as memorable or moving without the bittersweet end. They seemed like two real people who got to experience an impossible fairytale, if only for a day.

Ghostwriter

Agreed. She's the greatest female lead I've ever seen.

Rodger Johnson

Hepburn was always fantastic. You should watch the original Sabrina (soooooo much better than the remake), Love in the Afternoon, Breakfast at Tiffany’s (yes, Andy Rooney’s Mr Yuniyoshi is horribly racist but Hepburn is fabulous), Funny Face (with Fred Astaire), My Fair Lady (it should have been Julie Andrews but you can’t blame Hepburn for that) and (my personal favorite) Charade. charade also stars Cary Grant. It was directed by the same man who directed Singing in the Rain. I’ve heard Charade called the best Hitchcock film not directed by Hitchcock. Watching one Hepburn’s films post Roman Holiday will show you why she was a style icon-she had a close, long term partnership with Givenchy. From Sabrina on, he designed the clothes she wore in most of her films.

Tinkerbell

As it should be.

Sage Antone

The ending does make you rethink whether this was actually a romcom because of its ending. It had romance; it had comedy. But the end result was bittersweet.

Catherine LW

Audrey Hepburn was an extraordinary person, beautiful but also possessed of an incandescent natural charm. She allowed herself to age naturally and her beauty persisted into her senior years. Later in life she made fewer film appearances, preferring to focus on her humanitarian work through UNICEF.

BRT

The ending is what makes the movie. They both had their one perfect day escape. Both changed for the better, but the day only works without any cares or responsibilities. Life would tarnish their pure adventure and love. Gregory Peck's ending slow walk is that of a man hoping she will come out, but he understands the Princess must have one love above all, her country.

Bill Bowman

Even though Technicolor films started in the 30s, B+W movies were still very common up through to the early sixties.

Neill Shaughness

I love this movie but cant handle the ending. I kinda figured Cassie wouldnt like the ending either.

Rodger Johnson

Charade will be a delight when Cassie sees it. It has the beauty of Audrey and Paris, the intrigue of a who-dun-it, and Cary Grant as debonair as ever (despite the age difference).

Bert Towle

Wyler was a student of Lubitsch, who was able to portray normal scenes in novel ways. The opening shoe scene does this perfectly. It let's us know that Princess Ann is hiding how tired she is, and that this will be a cinderella story in reverse, and is all done cinematically, without needing dialogue to explain it to the audience :)

A little trivia, Eddie Albert who played the photographer had a series called Green Acres in the mid 60's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umS3XM3xAPk), he's always played these kind of unassuming roles, but in real life he was a big time war hero during WWII and his heroic actions save the lives of a bunch of US Marines (https://ss.sites.mtu.edu/mhugl/2016/10/16/eddie-albert-in-the-battle-of-tarawa/)

Lana Gorgeous

You must watch Breakfast at Tiffany's, one of Audrey Hepburn's greatest and most romantic pictures. The last scene with "cat" will make you cry.

Lana Gorgeous

To film in B&W was a conscience decision made by director William Wyler so the story and characters would get the focus, not the locations. In the early 50's. B&W films were not unusual

Doug Cook

Does anyone else remember the days when Cassie was a bit reluctant to older movies, especially if they were b&w? And now they are making it onto the schedule without a poll. It was a lovely reaction and I figured it would be well received apart from the ending. Audrey Hepburn was stunning in every way and had some extra spark making her presence uniquely special. I believe this is even more amplified seeing her for the first time in this movie. There have been many suggestions so I'm not going to repeat them, just saying that I'm looking forward to the next pick in this Classics with Cassie series. I know these are not getting great views on YT, but I'm glad they are included once in a while. This was my second time watching the movie, but the first time seeing it since I've been to Rome a couple of years ago and it was fun recognizing places, and seeing how much some of them have changed over the past half-century, yet many are almost exactly the same. Rome is a place I can highly recommend putting on your bucket list. It has been one of the most fondly remembered family vacations we had and personally my favorite city I've visited so far ahead of Salzburg, Barcelona, London, Madrid, and Paris.

Gábor Árki

Roman Holiday's story and ending has so many similarities to a young Queen Elizabeth, choosing duty over her own needs and hopes. QE2 became Queen in February 1952, over a year before the movie's release in August '53. Roman Holiday must have captured the feeling of the time. A higher duty above ones self. "Cassie's Classy Classics" are the best reactions. Thanks Cassie.

On the subject of composing sequels:. Many years ago, before streaming, I set my VCR to record a middle-of-the-night airing of Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears, because it sounded interesting. When the second half of the movie was getting really intriguing (for those of you who have seen it, when the heroine is giving a TV interview, and you-know-who shows up) the recording cut out. The newspaper had misstated the time. Naturally, I composed a bang-up ending for the drama. Years later, I found the movie on YouTube, and watched it through to the end. The actual ending, while good, did not, in my estimation, live up to the ending I had imagined. Sadly, I have watched the movie enough times now (it's really good), that I can no longer remember my imagined ending!

Mingo Wayama

I will always cherish this reaction, Cassie's first reaction to Audrey Hepburn, and the amazing story that is Roman Holiday. The only thing better than a love story is watching Cassie be in love with a love story. Cassie's third film directed by William Wyler (the first two being Ben-Hur and The Best Years of Our Lives). Well Cassie's now seen Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck (again), still working on Cary Grant. 😏

Mike LL

Another great Audrey Hepburn film that hasn’t been mentioned yet is The Children’s Hour. That one is also a must watch which also stars Shirley MacLaine who you saw in The Apartment.

Tim Raths

My favorite Audrey Hepburn films are in order: Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, Wait Until Dark, The Nun's Story, Two For the Road, and Charade. She just sparkles in everything she does. You have so much more to discover!

Kat Farlowe

She also starved at that time. She had jaundice, anemia, and an infection that would have killed her if her mother had not been given a bunch of cigarettes that she sold to buy her penicillin that saved her. She saw Jewish children being loaded on trains to camps which she never forgot. As a starving teen, she was helped by UNICEF after the war and she became a humanitarian ambassador for UNICEF in her later years.

Catherine LW

Cooper looked haggard in that movie. I think he was suffering from health issues and he did die of cancer about 5 years later.

Catherine LW

While I haven’t seen this movie I wanted to say. Romantic movies are probably one of my least favorite genres of movies. However since I’ve joined this channel I’ve watched a bunch of them. While still not a huge fan, I’ve discovered some good ones.

James1035

Something movies have in common with Renaissance Italian paintings.

Ben Livingstone

Interesting as the Italians refer to black and white as “chiaroscuro” - light and dark.

Catherine LW

Oddly I never thought much about Audrey Hepburn till I watched this with Cassie...she was beautiful. And Gregory Pecks voice...I think it made me grow chest hair.

Anthony Perez

I like that we're getting back to that now, with black-and-white movies being made for stylistic reasons, not just as a nod to the past.

Ben Livingstone

i did not! 😂🤦🏼‍♀️but that does make me ❤️ him even more

Cassie

omg i didn’t realize he was Atticus! makes me love him even more

Cassie

See what you did, Cassie? You have people freaking out over romance movies. You even have me watching these movies. 😖 I didn't watch any of these romance movies until you started forcing me to. You are trying to corrupt guys like me that watch just action movies. Making me get all touchy feely and enjoying these romantic movies. 😩 Stop trying to broaden me. Maybe I only enjoy them because I am watching them with you? You are dangerous. You are addictive.

Rick Williams

Awesome, love it when you watch the classics!

Johnny Liu

In my imagination, I have already written the sequels to two of Audrey Hepburn's movies: "Roman Holiday" and "The Nun's Story". I needed to do this if only to ensure that the characters lived happily ever after. I will not share how those sequels turn out, because the beauty of those open endings is that it leaves us to fill in the blanks. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your reaction to this movie which has always held a special place in my heart. I hope one day you get to visit Rome. It is a magical city.

James

Well said. As a teenager Audrey Hepburn also a daring spy for the Dutch resistance during World War 2. And carried food and messages to downed British pilots behind enemy lines at great risk to her own life.

Steve Holton

President Kennedy didn't like the way he looked in hats. And many men followed his lead.

Steve Holton

From the mid thirties to the mid sixties it was always a decision whether to film in colour or black and white. The nature of the story and, yes, cost were considered. Personally, I think that black and white brings out the structure of Roman architecture better than colour would have.

Ted Little

Time for Lost in Translation…

djKENTO

Cassie, the princess is loosely based on Queen Elizabeth's sister, who is also portrayed in the Netflix series, The Crown, which I think you'd enjoy. As that series spans several decades, the actors and actresses portraying the characters change every season or so... Anne is Elizabeth's daughter irl, but Princess Margaret plays a bigger role in the series, and has a 'bigger' storyline, though. Lots of forbidden love stories in the Crown...

Jon Johns

The death of the male hat is where is began. Why aren't we all wearing hats?

Dryfesands

When watching reruns of 60's TV shows like The Fugitive, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island and I Dream of Jeannie, the earlier seasons of each was in black and white and then the later seasons were in color. I'm guessing around the mid to late 60s most TV shows and movies went primarily in color. If you remember, The Apartment (1960) was in black and white

Shawn Kildal

I’m not as concerned about the order of watching Bond movies as others. I watched the early Bonds entirely depending on which one appeared next on one of the 3 TV channels of the day. It worked for me. Watch them in whatever order you want Cassie. It’s perhaps a more common Bond watching experience anyway.

James UK

When watching these older movies, I keep noticing how much better dressed everyone is when they are out and about. Now it's all t-shirts and gym shorts even at nice dining places.

Shawn Kildal

Funniest moment. Barber wants to dance with the Princess, Joe "I don't mind at all" Cassie "I mind a little"

Shawn Kildal

Man, what was it about Audrey Hepburn? She was stunningly beautiful. There's no doubt about that. She made being natural and vulnerable in front of the camera seem so effortless. She had grace, charm, poise, charisma, and could seem both earnestly innocent and incredibly sexy at the same time. Yet these qualities have all belonged to countless other actresses both before and after her, so what made her different? Rewatching this for maybe the hundredth time, I was reminded of what a truly unique screen presence she was. The impression she managed to leave on audiences was far more than merely the sum of these parts. Regardless of the genre she was working in, there was something strangely elusive and sparklingly radiant about her. As the cliché goes, one can't take one's eyes off her. She commanded attention not by doing a lot (as other actors tend to do) but by doing very little. It's easy to see how a whole industry has sprung up around her, and yet somehow (more than 30 years after her death) she has even managed to rise above that. So glad you finally got to see this film. It's wonderful, isn't it? I knew you'd enjoy it... and I also knew you'd rewrite that ending. ;-) Hepburn and Peck are terrific. Eddie Albert is also great as the photographer sidekick. The locations are gorgeous. A real gem of a movie. Can't wait for you to experience more Audrey. I recommend CHARADE, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S, MY FAIR LADY, ALWAYS, HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, WAIT UNTIL DARK and, of course, the original SABRINA.

Stick Figure Studios

I brought that up today during the True Detective YouTube premiere chat. Jon Johns said today that she'll probably start with Goldfinger since it had the most votes. We'll see

Shawn Kildal

Color was expensive. It wasn't really common until closer to the mid fifties, when movie studios needed to compete with television. That's when they became wide-screen as well.

Kevin Charley

Gregory Peck is a great actor with such a distinctive and distinguished voice. Besides To Kill a Mockingbird, I know him best from such movies as Cape Fear (the original), The Guns of Navarone, Twelve O'Clock High, How the West Was Won and of course, The Omen.

Shawn Kildal

That's why you'll notice the sound quality suddenly changes at that moment. It's live sound. Not looped.

Stick Figure Studios

And, of course, the original SABRINA.

Stick Figure Studios

Another vote for release order on the Bonds.

Stick Figure Studios

Gregory Peck really pranked Audrey Hepburn when he stuck his hand in “The Mouth of Truth.” Peck’s character was supposed to chicken out of sticking his hand in, but he decided to stick his hand in and pretend to be hurt. Her terrified scream is authentic.

Alex Villarreal

Never seen Cassie with her hair up before.. looks good, perfect choice for an Audrey Hepburn film I think. ;)

Andrew Rose

I second the motion. Charade is a great movie, very Hitchcockesque without being Hitchcock.

Michael Weiner

Ooh, do "Charade" next! Audrey and Cary Grant in a great, romantic, fun and twisty story in a European setting!

VivendoBem

Great movie. I really wish that “Love in the Afternoon” is the next Audrey Hepburn movie. Audrey Hepburn really gets to flex her acting muscles with Maurice Chevalier and Gary Cooper. (Gary Cooper is a bit stiff, but Maurice Chevalier is amazing as the loving dad.)

Uncle Phoenix

Holly Golightly! Breakfast at Tiffany’s!

Catherine LW

I want a front row seat when Cassie watches "My Fair Lady"..

Celeste McAllister

Oh my gosh! Cassie would die seeing Florence! And that kiss!!! 🔥🔥🔥 “Something tremendous has happened!”

Catherine LW

That was a fun watch. My vote for romantic movie for the month of February is A Room with a View (1985). The music, locations, costumes, acting and cinematography are sublime. It's about a young conservative English girl falling in love in the Italian countryside while on holiday with her family.

Ian Cano

That’s a gem of a movie. I sent her a DVD copy. She would love it for sure.

Rose

You would also love "How to Steal a Million."

Ben Livingstone

Boy would you love CHARADE.

Matt Rose

I agree as well. Also, still kind of hoping that one vote difference and all the love in the comments may have convinced them to include Dr No. If so, the order is important this being the catalyst of the story of From Russia with Love.

Gábor Árki

I definitely second that emotion

CJGardner

When this was released on blu-ray two years ago Dalton Trumbo’s name was reinstated back to the writing credits.

Tim Raths

More Audrey Hepburn pls! “My Fair Lady” / “Funny Face” / “Wait Until Dark”

Rose

At the time, the man who wrote the script, Dalton Trumbo, couldn't take credit for it let alone have his name on it. He was one of the Hollywood 10. A group of screenwriters and directors who were blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee because they were members of the Communist Party. Since Trumbo couldn't get work and no one in Hollywood would hire him, him started writing scripts under pseudonyms. That's why his friend and fellow screenwriter, Ian McLellan Hunter, is credited as the writer. They made a movie about his life Trumbo (2014) with Bryan Cranston. That's one you would probably really like. One man fighting against bullies and tyranny. 😁

Zane From Canada

I am soooo glad you loved it! I KNEW you would. Can't wait to watch it again with you. Ah amore!💗

Kat Farlowe

I'm 20 minutes into the movie and your reaction, and I am screaming ATTICUS FINCH!!! ATTICUS FINCH!!! I sure hope you recognize him from To Kill a Mockingbird...

Dave

“As you grow older you will come to realize that you have two hands: one for helping yourself and one for helping others” - Audrey Hepburn.

Catherine LW

Couldn’t agree with you more on the Bond movie viewings. By the actor and by the release date.

James1035

Elegant is the most commonly used word to describe Audrey Hepburn. I knew you would love this film and can’t wait to watch this reaction.

Tim Raths

I'm lady crushing on Audrey Hepburn,Gregory Peck was very handsome I remember him as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird,I like his distinctive voice,I read Audrey's bio and shout out to her decades of support she gave to UNICEF and children's causes around the world, she was beautiful both inside and outside.❤🌸

Celeste McAllister

Love this film so happy you finally got to see it

Matt

Even in her last movie Always, she looked exquisite. She was so graceful and seemed so kind.

Clifford

OH my gosh Audrey. So many wonderful movies she's done, but my absolute favourite is Charade with Cary Grant. It's sort of... a romantic murder mystery? Anyway, it absolutely oozes the most ridiculous levels of charm with those two together that it's almost incomprehensible. And it's exciting, and witty, and suspenseful, and a little bit 60's style sexy, and essentially, perfect. Totally delicious, and a must-watch, whether on this channel or for your own delighted joy.

CJGardner

Apparently, the director thought filming it in color would make Rome the central focus, and draw attention away from the story.

Ben Livingstone

Yes, but which BOND?? I know we are driving you crazy! Sorry, Sorry, Sorry! But whatever and however many Bonds you see please please please watch them in the order they were made. So looking forward to watching ROMAN HOLIDAY tomorrow after work. So glad you chose this movie to watch, wasn’t the scenes of Rome so romantic and beautiful?

Mike LL

Never seen it but definitely heard about this one my whole life. May have to come back another day and watch this with you Cassie. I’m holding out for the true detective finale and footloose next month. Glad you enjoyed the movie. Have a great week.
