Although I fully endorse your recommendation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Cut, I have to point out that ILM did NOT do visual effects on STTMP. That was done by FX Supervisor Douglas Trumbull’s company EEG (Entertainment Effects Group) in conjunction with John Dykstra’s Apogee. (Dykstra had left ILM well before founding Apogee). ILM’s *earliest* work on a Star Trek film was on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

David Olden

I doubt this'll be seen at this point but if you haven't seen it you should check out "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". Fun space comedy and with Allen Rickman again as a depressed robot. Also a great book series.

Samuel Newman

If it were up to me, I would say "Galaxy Quest" was written & dedicated to Treckies and their lives involved with Trek conventions. Also as far as the Star Trek movies, I would with what Sean Novack had to say. Sean's List was a good list, yet after 50 years of Star Trek, Sean's rather small, but a good start.

Steve H

if you do watch that list of movies you listed off Cassie, you have to watch the Abyss with your sister, since you've watched a couple other Ed Harris movies with her. The Abyss is my favorite Ed Harris film. Stargate is a great film too.

Ryan Towell

I grew up in this one! So glad to get to watch your reaction on this one !!

Cubazoan

For those of you who haven't seen it, there is a fantastic mockumentary about the making of the TV series Galaxy Quest as part of the movie's original promotional materials, it is absolutely hysterical. Here's a link to it for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XT4gWFDR_w0

Story Archer

This is the definition of a light hearted parody. It never takes itself too seriously, and yet manages to poke the just right kind of japes at the space opera genera. Its fun and gentle, and gives you exactly what you want.

LordGrailKnight

Really glad you liked it one of my favourite movies and Alan Rickman steals the show for me. There’s also an excellent documentary about this film it might still be free on YouTube. Tim Allen and Alan Rickman didn’t actually get on at the start as Rickman didn’t take him as a serious actor but they worked it out in the end. Regards to Star Trek its probably best watching a few of the original series and maybe a few of the Next Generation if your planing on watching all of the movies. Also I would blame you if you missed out the very first movie as it’s one of the worst ones. But the but 2,3 and 4 are all great and are pretty much a trilogy as they all connected. The 6 one is also one of my favourites, when I have time I might try and put an episode list together on Discord and see what everyone else thinks.

Dean Holt

I thought that was hilarious as well 😂😂

Dean Holt

I second that it’s so funny with a lot of heart and has loads of cameos.

Dean Holt

I found a site that I use on my laptop on a second browser. tinyzonetv.to is what I use. I've been able to find on there every movie she's watched for her channel.

Damon

Why is this so hard to find on streaming?

Story Archer

Finally, I'm not alone recommending TMP Director's Edition. 😃 I personally do enjoy the slow, sweeping shots too. It is a slow movie for sure, but the DC did a good job with trimming and reorganizing them so they don't feel too long, especially with Jerry Goldsmith's amazing score.

Gábor Árki

I'm sure others have pointed it out, but I implore you to watch the 2019 documentary about the movie that's found on Amazon, I believe. In the film, they actually revealed that there were plans to make a sequel, but the untimely, sad death of Alan Rickman changed that. I had great fun re-watching it with you, ma'am. Always remember, "Never give up! Never surrender!" :D

Damon

Definitely a cute movie there. I really enjoyed that one.

Damon

As an aside, I'm looking at the list now and trying to figure out all the filters - it's showing Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 as 'Seen', but that movie comes out next May. Am I missing something?

Story Archer

Thanks for the response - I really thought that one had made it by her. Ah, well - I'll use the list from now on before making requests, Lord knows there's still plenty of great stuff out there.

Story Archer

Galaxy Quest (1999) The scene when Tim Allen is in a men's room overhearing how the cast of Galaxy Quest are nobodies and all the co-stars can't stand him mirrors an actual event in William Shatner's life. He discovered the exact same things about himself when he attended a 1986 convention

MatthewBrown74m

I STRONGLY agree with watching some of the original Trek before the 2009 reboots. There were 79 episodes of the Original Series over three seasons. When people ask me how to get an introduction I will often give them a Top Ten Episodes that we worked out a couple of decades ago when I was President of a Star Trek Fan Club called "Federation Strike Fleet Alpha" (yes. I'm an uber-geek!). I recommend these because they're a great intro to the characters, races, and themes of Star Trek. I posted them in a comment above, but here they are again. 10. The Corbomite Maneuver (first one filmed and a good intro) 9. The Naked Time (Uhura's "Sorry, neither!" line is an ad-lib and worth the price of admission) 8. The Doomsday Machine (Good intro to Starfleet, and "Commodore Matt Decker" is the father of "Captain Will Decker" from TMP) 7.The Menagerie (part 1) (Important history for the Kalvinverse and "Strange New Worlds" 6. The Menagerie (part 2) 5. Amok Time (introduces Vulcan culture) 4. Balance of Terror (introduces Romulan culture) 3. The Trouble With Tribbles (introduces Klingons) 2. The City On the Edge of Forever (possibly the best episode ever) 1. Space Seed (introduces Khan Noonien Singh and why he wants his Wrath) Cassie, if you really like these, I'd recommend the Director's cut of The Motion Picture. It really is a good story. The problem is there are a lot of sweeping shots of ships and other things in space that look amazing for the time (ILM did the effects in one of their first non-Star Wars films between Episodes 4 & 5), but were WAY too long. Rather than skip the film fast forward through these and you'll save 20-25 minutes of viewing time. The Director's Cut did some of this for you already. I do NOT recommend the theatrical release. If you were more "Meh" on the episodes (personally, I don't think you will be, but what do I know?), you can skip this one and go to Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. Which is generally considered the Best Star Trek Film of All Time to this day, and is vital to understanding the first sequel of the new films, as they loosely based that one on Wrath of Khan.

Sean Novack

I'll 3rd that one! Maybe a Top 10 episodes instead of the full 3 seasons, then the films. That will give SO much context to the jokes here and the Universe in general. 10. The Corbomite Maneuver (first one filmed and a good intro) 9. The Naked Time (Uhura's "Sorry, neither!" line is an ad-lib and worth the price of admission) 8. The Doomsday Machine (Good intro to Starfleet) 7.The Menagerie (part 1) (Important history for the Kalvinverse and "Strange New Worlds" 6. Space Seed (introduces Khan Noonien Singh and why he wants his Wrath)

Sean Novack

Interstellar is … fine? I guess? I really appreciate some of the imagination behind it, but when you get down to it, it’s no smarter than Galaxy Quest. It’s just smart in a different way. Galaxy Quest is a love letter to fandom, and actually quite profound in its message that art, even popular art, can inspire people and change the world.

Brian Harris

Knight and Day is on 𝑎 list, sadly that list is Cassie's "Seen" list. You can easily look up what else is on Cassie's "Seen" list (without having to log in or anything) here: https://popcornrequests.com/seen

Planner

So glad you got around to this - you really need to put Knight and Day on your list.

Story Archer

Great reaction Cassie! That was a lot of fun!

Robert da Spruce

A great movie nobody talks about. It slipped through the net but it's so good, and a true story!

Odd Thomas

Anyone else notice that when Tim Allen tells Mathesar that Taggert doesn't exist, he refers to him as CAPTAIN Taggert instead of Commander? An intentional error, or was this a slip by Allen that went unnoticed by the filmmakers?

Michael Jung

Much of this movie was influenced by the way actors like Leonard Nimoy were initially embarrassed by the idea that they would be best known for playing a character on a "silly" Sci Fi show - yet when they learned what "Star Trek" meant to their fans, and how it had inspired GENERATIONS of people to pursue careers in science, they embraced their characters and acknowledged their importance.

Michael Jung

By Grabthar's Hammer, you shall be entertained!

Philip Davetas

It's not over rated. It's an unbelievable movie, that's it. Did I say it's the most unbelievable movie ever made? No I didn't. This is what I'm talking about when I say you have to be intelligent to understand Interstellar. I mean they can't even understand my post. How could they possibly understand or know how good Interstellar is?! That's right shots fired. "Pew pew pew pew"

Joseph M Sica

This is the film where I discovered Tony Shalhoub’s (“Monk”) hidden talent of comedic timing. This was received better than I thought it would, though I hope the semi-seriousness of Star Trek doesn’t play as being caricature of this movie (which is easy to see with the original cast, by the way). Awesome reaction. Mando - Kuill - Blurrg

Ike

I think at least one episode of the original series is a must! It’s hokey and the effects are hilarious. But you’ve gotta give props to what started it all. That’s what inspired the original trekkies. And they’re the ones who made the whole franchise happen.

Juley

Alan Rickman, such a kind person and funny, scary, great actor. Gone much too soon. F*** cancer. As others have mentioned, you might want to check out Quigley down under. Great movie with Selleck and Rickman (as villain, what else). You might like it.

Harald Mahr

Interstellar is overrated. Let's not act as though it's objectively the best movie ever made or anything and that anyone who prefers another film is just ignorant. I'd watch Galaxy Quest over Interstellar any day, and I've seen Interstellar a number of times.

Joel P

If I remember correctly, it was actually the studio heads who insisted that the movie be "family friendly." Usual studio exec meddling is for the worst, but this is one of those rare instances where I think it worked out for the best. F-bombs and stoner jokes would have clashed with the other elements of the film. It's perfect the way it is.

Joel P

One of my all time favs. You’re laughing your way through thinking fun action comedy then the commander explains to matches are the historical documents and you see the pain and betrayal in mathesar’s face and your heart breaks. Then you’re good again until quellek gets shot and Dr. Lazarus says the line. The acting and writing have to be superb for you to genuinely feel those emotions while watching a movie like this.

S

Another good "Star Trek movie that's not actually Star Trek" is "Please Stand By" starring Dakota Fanning as an autistic Trekkie (Star Trek fan).

Michael Jung

CAW, CAW

Bert Towle

Seconded. Very good movie.

Matt Rose

Fanboys (2009) since you have watched all the star wars movies, it would be a fun comedy i bet you would enjoy.

David RedEagle

A rare type of role for him but he is truly wonderful in it. Wish he had more like this.

BRT

That was a blast. Thanks Cassie.

Bill Hayden

If you move Star Trek up your list start with "The Wrath of Kahn". If you don't like the Wrath of kahn 1982, then ya don't need to go any further.

Aaron Taft

“The captain in the wheelchair”. I spit my drink all over the couch. Thanks Cassie! 😁

JC762

I agree with you. Sometimes you have to see a movie more than once and when you do, something just " clicks" and you just understand what a fantastic movie it really is. Happened to me for interstellar and Man of Steel. Both movies that nolan worked on.

rakesh

Got a movie recomendation. Only the Brave. Its about firefighters and its a true story. Really good movie and i think it would be a good one for the channel and maybe to bring your sister along with you for that one :)

Exzear

No way man, I don't give care that she didn't watch Interstellar. The only thing I was saying is I think Interstellar will blow her mind like it does everyone else. I can't wait for her to watch that! I wasn't thinking one bit "She didn't watch the movie I wanted." I was thinking more like "O well, I can't wait for her to watch Interstellar!" Sorry u don't understand my post.

Joseph M Sica

Agreed, although there are clearly more references to the original series and the backstage relationships than to Next Generation. My point was that Cassie mistakenly believes she’s seen Star Trek, when she’s actually only seen the 90s series, not the original.

Just Plain Bob

Another great movie with Tim Allen is Zoom: The Academy for Superheroes! I thought it was pretty good too

James Payne

Star Trek or Star Trek TNG is the same when it comes to what Galaxy Quest is making fun of.

Radwar

Here we go the "She didn't watch the movie I wanted!" syndrome. She loved Galaxy Quest and that's all that matters, end of story.

Radwar

Top five of all time. I'm so very glad that you enjoyed it

David Guin

Oh, and “Space Seed”, how could I forget that one? It leads directly to Star Trek II.

Texas Anla'Shok

I 2nd that David with one condition the original series comes first!

Celeste McAllister

Well you can't just watch parts of Interstellar. It's a movie you have to watch from the beginning and willing to dedicate the 2 hours and 40 min it is or however long it is. And I do believe you have to be pretty intelligent and have a vivid and spectacular imagination like I do to really appreciate Interstellar. Once you watch it and understand the movie I believe someone like Cassie would love it. Galaxy quest imo is more of a kids film. Cute and funny. But thanks Matt for chiming in! <3

Joseph M Sica

The utter contempt that Rickman puts into his delivery of 'what a savings' is so choice.

Matt Rose

PIECE OF THE ACTION is so good.

Matt Rose

Glad you liked it Cassie! I always got a kick out of this one too.

Richard Rolen

This i think isn’t so much a pastiche on Trek itself as much as it is on Trek fandom. If you want to familiarize yourself with Trek, there are a few episodes I’d recommend. “City on the Edge of Forever” is a must. “The Corbomite Maneuver” “Balance of Terror” “Journey to Babel” “Day of the Dove” “The Trouble With Tribbles” and “A Piece of the Action” are a lot of fun. And generally any time Spock and McCoy start sniping at each other is fun to watch. No doubt others have their own essential episodes.

Texas Anla'Shok

*sniff, sniff* Seems ok.

Texas Anla'Shok

I know I want to know what they did.

Christopher Gray

No better way to satire Star Trek than this,I like how all of the nerds teamed up to help save the day! please watch the Star Trek original series Cassie! PIB live stream is today the 28th at 15:00mnt everybody, have your 'Omega 13' up and running ready to go!

Celeste McAllister

If you dive into Star Trek you'll find you'll root for the OG crew every bit as much as in Galaxy Quest over 7 movies (I never got why people hated on Generations; you get Picard AND Kirk!)

Odd Thomas

Stop making me tear up watching Galaxy Quest! Captain Professor X was my favorite Star Trek captain!

Scott Macaulay

So glad you enjoyed this Cassie. We knew you would like the comedy but knew the serious and tender parts would touch you in the feels. Great moments. By grabthar's hammer, what a reaction!

Canadianant

The sign of a great movie where Alexander Dane/Dr Lazarus despises his famous catchphrase, “By Grabthar’s Hammer…” at the beginning of the movie and is played for laughs, but later when Quellek is shot he delivers the line with real emotion that it’s actually moving. Great acting, great writing.

Wes Stewart

Great documentary.

Matt Rose

I read a story about The Green Mile was Sam Rockwell first big part and after that he took this part in Galaxy Quest because Wild Bill was so unlikable he wanted something where he was cute and funny.

softshoes

INTERSTELLAR is a weird one. When I saw it theatrically the first time, I didn't care for it. I rewatched it a few years later and it clicked for me. I've seen it several times since and now I love it and rate it as my favorite Nolan film. I've talked to others who turned around on the film after a rewatch so I know I'm not the only person who feels this way about the film. I suspect that a lot of the people hating on the film only watched it once and noped out of it. I hope they all give it another try because I really think it's a masterpiece. As to GALAXY QUEST, I'm not surprised this won over INTERSTELLAR. It's a fantastically entertaining film that seemed right in Cassie's wheelhouse. This reaction video above proved everyone right who voted for it.

Matt Rose

Dearest Cassie, you sound like the you’re really suffering with allergies. I’m so sorry for you.

Lamar Smith

This movie is cute and fun, but for it to win over interstellar tells me most ppl that voted for this movie probably hasn't seen Interstellar. That's like Escape Plan winning over The Shawshank Redemption. Kekek Which reminds me Law Abiding Citizen is great. It has great twists and turns. Unrealistic but still pretty cool. Check that out sometime! But I still can't wait to watch your reaction to this movie! <3

Joseph M Sica

'...what a savings.'

Matt Rose

It's the rare 'perfect script'. If you know script structure at all, then you'll recognize how the film hits every required beat just perfectly. The acting is great across the board and the direction/editing is simply spot on. On top of all that, the hit/miss ratio on the jokes is incredibly high at almost 100%. What's also funny: the film was going to be R-rated initially. You can tell that the harsh language was re-dubbed in several spots, most especially when Sigourney Weaver sees the stamping machine and clearly mouths 'F That' and instead says 'Screw That'. Also, Tony Shalhoub was supposed to be a pothead (hence his zen like character where nothing fazes him) but that element was cut. While everyone is great, I have to give the MVP award to Sam Rockwell. He plays the stereotypical redshirt perfectly and has some of the best line deliveries. 'Is there AIR????'

Matt Rose

There's a retrospective documentary about this movie that's brilliant too: Never Surrender (2019)

Odd Thomas

Cassie, you’ve never seen Star Trek. What you described was Star Trek: The Next Generation. The OG Star Trek was televised twenty years before the show you described. It was brilliant and you would hate it.

Just Plain Bob

by Grabthar’s Hammer, she’s reacted to Galaxy Quest!!!

JL_83

Also 'Wild Bill' in The Green Mile.

Mike Lemon

Not sure Cassie picked up on this one, Crewman "Guy" was Justin Hammer from IronMan2. Also check him out with Anna Kendrick in "Mr. Right".

Christopher Smith

Well now I want some Veronica Mars rants.

aarswft

I'm sorry, I don't recommend we put any reactor through watching The Motion Picture, theatrical edition or director's edition. That thing is so slow moving, it feels like 4 hours. If she fell asleep during interstellar, she would fall asleep during TMP. Guaranteed. 😂

Caomhan84

This is one of my favourites and a great way to describe it. There's actually a really good documentary made in 2019 about the making of the film and it's influence on pop culture. Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary I highly recommend you check it out.

Daryl

I've never heard Worf and Geordi being described that way. And it's cute how she is confusing Picard with Charles Xavier (I think).

Mike Lemon

Yesssss! Great job, Cassie!

Gary David Holbrook

At last! So much fun watching Cassie"get it". The comedy is great, really so clever but that's really just the hook. It ends up being so much more meaningful .

BRT

That was a super fun reaction and I enjoyed it very much! Cassie, I was almost certain you would really like it and I think now you see how well this movie can stand on its own. It is neither a spoof nor a parody of Star Trek, but rather an homage to it. Personally, I was a bit disappointed when I watched it for the first time. I just got into Star Trek 1-2 years earlier but I've only seen some seasons of the '90s series (Voyager and DS9) that started airing on cable and the movies that I could purchase on DVD. This was recommended to me as a Star Trek parody which immediately got my attention and purchased the DVD blindly. I was hoping for something like Spaceballs, but got something else instead. Having not seen or had access to the original show nor knowing much about its backstage drama essentially meant almost the entire sub-layer of the movie referencing and making fun of these slipped by me. After the initial disappointment, I started to appreciate it on its own, it was only years later that I started to pick up on the little things as my ST knowledge expanded. Btw, the alien planet was indeed Utah, those scenes were shot in Goblin Valley State Park. Never heard of it so far, but I did check on Vulcan, Alberta. It seems this town is indeed the "Official Star Trek Capital of Canada", and has an Enterprise statue and an entire tourism industry built on Trek.😀The origin of its name was actually the Roman God of Fire. Regarding Star Trek, it is a big franchise and a lot of content. I think reactions should focus mainly on the movies. Expecting a reaction for any more than a few episodes from the series seems unrealistic to me. I do hope you will be starting with the original movies, maybe with a few episodes of the original series. The three new movies made after 2009 are often recommended as an entry point, but those are not a clean reboot of the franchise but also a direct continuation of the first 6 movies. Having seen at least some of the original movies first does elevate the experience of these new ones IMO. My recommendation on how to start with the franchise would be: 1. (Optional) Star Trek - The Original Series (1966-1969) Selected few episodes, I'm thinking 1-2. Not really necessary in my opinion, because the 6 original movies can stand on their own very well, but could be beneficial to get a taste and reference where it all started. I think it could be a Patreon-exclusive thing. 2. Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition (1979-2022) I know this will be controversial, but I firmly believe this should be included. Despite its flaws, it is a very ambitious, beautifully shot movie with an amazing score. Also, it does show an aspect of Star Trek that is neglected in other movies: the excitement of exploration, going out and facing the unknown, and some philosophical questions about the universe and existence itself. And most importantly, it was sort of a soft reboot and does a great job reintroducing the characters to a new audience not really familiar with the show. It is one of the most notorious unfinished movies so I HIGHLY recommend watching the DIRECTOR'S EDITION instead of the theatrical. It is a properly finished version and a much better movie in every aspect.   3. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) I don't think you can find many Trekkies who wouldn't consider this to be the best. Could you jump right into this one? Sure. But I firmly believe knowing the characters beforehand and already having some connection to them does elevate it quite a bit. This is as far as I would go now, the rest could be decided based on your experience and take on the franchise.

Gábor Árki

pls watch the original star trek movies before anything else. they are great, they hold up well and i know you will like them.

rubberkidney

It's so fun to watch her genuinely enjoy something. It's been about a decade since I've seen this movie, so it was nice to laugh with Cassie. I forgot how funny it was. :)

Caomhan84

Also, awesome to hear you were a Veronica Mars watcher. My two favorite TV dads are Keith Mars and Coach Taylor.

sarCC

I'm glad you finally watched this and enjoyed it. It's such a fun and endearing movie.

Yaisu

so fun to watch this favorite with you, to see you lighting up during my favorite scenes

Tringard

Well, I'm so glad you had so much fun with the movie. It's fun and I love it too but I wanted it after Star Trek. What do I know though 🤔. If you watch the full length back it fun to notice Stuart or Stewart ( not sure how you like spelling it) is looking over the movie box during the whole reaction. Please do get to Star Trek soon. As long as it's OG Trek and not the 2009 version. 2009 can be watched later after the OG films.

David Freese

I’ve just got to know if you’ve seen Sense and Sensibility because not only is Alan Rickman swoony, but it’s an absolutely wonderful romance you’d completely adore

CJGardner

Now bring on the Star Trek!

djKENTO

https://youtu.be/xar7Q2PpyIA Awesome 😄😄😄 Scottish version of Star trek 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Björn Karlsson

Yay, so excited to see this reaction!

sarCC

I was right in the middle of watching something else, but I've been waiting for this one so forget that! Hope she likes it.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

If you want to see more of Alan Rickman you need to check out Quigley Down Under!

Sawyer Wick

One of my all time favourites!!! Super nostalgic and just so much fun!
