Dissonant, agree, the Votings Right Act was gutted big time.

Clay F

Modern Republicans = voter suppression big time. They admit it.

Clay F

Dustin, so true. Well explained.

Clay F

Thank you for reviewing this and being sympathetic to the movement. I hope you are able to learn more about the great scarifies many made in the Civil Rights movement.

SKL

Dustin Nelson

That's the price for election integrity. DEAL WITH IT, COMMIE!

Thomas Boyette

For starters, become literate, then explore some facts at- https://www.aclu.org/fact-sheet/oppose-voter-id-legislation-fact-sheet 'Voter ID Laws Deprive Many Americans of the Right to Vote Millions of Americans Lack ID. 11% of U.S. citizens – or more than 21 million Americans – do not have government-issued photo identification. Obtaining ID Costs Money. Even if ID is offered for free, voters must incur numerous costs (such as paying for birth certificates) to apply for a government-issued ID. Underlying documents required to obtain ID cost money, a significant expense for lower-income Americans. The combined cost of document fees, travel expenses and waiting time are estimated to range from $75 to $175. The travel required is often a major burden on people with disabilities, the elderly, or those in rural areas without access to a car or public transportation. In Texas, some people in rural areas must travel approximately 170 miles to reach the nearest ID office.'

Take your lies and political bullshit somewhere else.

Thomas Boyette

LMAO 🤣 thats the most common cookie-cutter claim white-supremacists like to make excuses for the system with, predictable but only made by the exceptionally uninformed. It's a barrier to anyone that doesn't have easy access to a dmv and several hours of free time to take off work to pick one up, and extends to other types of Voter suppression. For example in areas with a statistically higher level of minorities the nearest dmv will only be open a few hours one day a week and require a car to reach from the most populated neighborhoods. If you don't know someone who can drive you there during 1-3pm on a Monday then you can't get a 'valid ID' made. But odds are you know all that if you're trying that argument thinking I haven't seen it made before.

Dustin Nelson

If you believe voter IDs prevent blacks from voting, you are a racist.

Thomas Boyette

I am not going to argue semantics with you on her page. That said, the moment states with a history of disenfranchising minority voters were no longer required to certify their voting laws before enacting them, they started passing voting laws that predominantly made it harder for minorities to vote. Call it what you will.

Dissonant Bard

I dare you to look into it and prove me wrong, I really want to see you try kid

Dustin Nelson

Votin Right Act was not "gutted". That's race-baiting Democrat propaganda.

Thomas Boyette

??

Dustin Nelson

STFU, racist liar.

Thomas Boyette

Along the same line try Gandi Ben Kingsley is off the chart

Louis Wilberger

The saddest part of Selma (2014) is that the conservatives on the Supreme Court effectively revoked/eliminated the useful provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 that the film portrays as the ultimate solution to voting rights back in 2013, right before this movie came out. Lately modern Republicans are even making arguments for what would be considered poll taxes and other barriers these days because the law preventing that kind of discrimination that they fought so hard for in this film was so thoroughly gutted. Voter ID laws are also a highly effective workaround for the remaining provisions of the act currently used by many states as minority vote suppression tools. Some people will likely be upset that I'm pointing these facts out but they should consider doing some research on the matter and apply critical thinking skills.

Dustin Nelson

Agreed!!!

It was a time of tension on many fronts; race, Vietnam, nuclear proliferation, poverty. As a high school tudent I attended a segrated school and college student I got my first exposure to people of different races, sexual orientation and religions. We really needed Dr. King.

Christopher Carr

Agreed!

You must try to watch King: A Filmed Record…Montgomery To Memphis, a documentary from 1970. It’s one of the most electrifying and astounding things I’ve ever seen.

Anthony Vawser

Black men in the nation were granted the right to vote after the civil war. For a few years the federal government kept troops in southern states to keep things from going back to the way they were. During this time the first black men were voted into federal, state, and local offices. This did not make the white citizens happy and there were lynchings and riots to try to preserve white supremacy. When the federal troops were moved to the frontier, the southern states were able to put laws in place to keep black men from voting based on many arbitrary hurdles. 40ish years later women got the Right to Vote and 40ish years after we had this. Then almost 50 years after The Voting Rights Act Passed it was gutted to allow states to once again make it more difficult for people they do not like to vote.

Dissonant Bard

Please watch Spike Lee's Malcolm X movie! I have tremendous respect for Dr. Martin Luther King, but I think it's criminal that Malcolm X is not taught along side King in American schools
