So - if no one's answered this question by them both: "Gandalf, Yoda or Dumbledore?" Gandalf! Gandalf is a 'Maiar/lesser Ainur' or: "Tolkien once described Gandalf as an angel incarnate; later, both he and other scholars have likened Gandalf to the Norse god Odin in his "Wanderer" guise." Eru Ilúvatar - is the creator of Ea the "Middle Earth Universe" or more accurately the Ainur created the universe with their music that Ilúvatar guided them to play. Please note that in the beginning of The Two Towers - as Gandalf falls - you hear a 'cling' as he grabs his sword "Glamdring" (the Foe Hammer). This noise I would presume would be the Elven ring of Fire "Narya." It was set with a ruby. It gave its wielder resistance to the weariness of time, and evoked hope in others. Its final bearer was the Wizard Gandalf, who received it from Círdan the shipwright at the Grey Havens during the Third Age. So - Yoda - is a 'natural being' but infused with "The Force." Dumbledore - a 'natural being' too - but a being able to wield/use magic. Gandalf on the other hand is higher up the 'scale' than either and also able to wield magic - albeit - seemingly linked to his staff (via the movies) and with what Tolkien said above... Puts Gandalf above the other two.

Back in the seventies you would see a lot of bumper stick with Frodo Lives on them.

Michael John McDaniel

Did you know that Gimli from LOTR and Sala from Raiders of Lost Ark are both the same actor John Rhys-Davies?

Michael John McDaniel

I clicked the how-to link and could not figure it out. It appears you have to be in the $10/month tier? That would explain why it wouldn't work for me at least.

Now that all three movies are live, I finally sat down and watched all six parts. (Yes, you can call it a MyGosh marathon if you want...) I am surprised though that Carly wasn't familiar with the LOTR story given that she's a fantasy reader. (I can understand not having watched the LOTR movies, because yeah they are long even by Marvel movie standards!)

Paul Stelter

My favorite thing on this show is Carly’s VERY SERIOUS movie watching face.

After the War of the Ring Sam and Rosie at their wedding. Following the Scouring of the Shire, Sam married Rose (Rosie) Cotton. They had thirteen children: Elanor the Fair, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, and Tolman. When Frodo Baggins announced that he was leaving to the Undying Lands, west of Middle-earth, he gave Sam the Red Book of Westmarch and Bag End where he and his large personal family, later called the Gardners, would live for many years. After Will Whitfoot resigned his post as Mayor of Michel Delving, in SR 1427, Sam was elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive seven-year terms. Later years After his wife died in the year 61 of the Fourth Age (SR 1482), Sam entrusted the Red Book to his daughter, Elanor, and left the Shire. It was a tradition handed down from Elanor that he went to the Grey Havens, and because he was also a Ring-bearer (albeit for a short time), he was allowed to pass over the Sea to be reunited with Frodo in the Undying Lands.

I'm currently on week 1 of a 3 week holiday and watched the entire extended edition trilogy yesterday with the Cassie solo watch-alongs. Now I'm about to do the marathon again with both. LOVE LoTR!

“And that's the great victory for the normal. That after earth-shattering events, in the end, decency, society, the bond of the family, and babies... These are the proper destiny of men" - John Rhys-Davies, (Gimli), commentary on the Return of the King (extended)

You're not alone

These "Cassie Saw This Before, But Now Sharing with Carly" episodes were REALLY good! You should do more of those, such as with Raiders of the Lost Ark or the Star Wars films.

Andrew MacP.

No idea how to get this lens to work.

Now why...when I first saw this, my thought were first "wow, some real LOTR fan stuff here but nothing I am really interested in"...followed by feelings of sadness upon reading of the deaths of characters that, in my heart, feel real. ANd to find that Peregrin Took named his son Faramir...wow. Would like to know the story of Samwise Gamgee leaving Middle-Earth. Hope to see them all again soon.

The Fourth Age was the time period that followed the War of the Ring (immediately) and the Third Age. It was a time of peace, and was also known as the "Age of Men". SR 1427 - Peregrin Took marries Diamond of Long Cleeve. SR 1430 - Birth of Faramir Took, son of Diamond of Long Cleeve and Peregrin Took. (Date Uncertain) - Birth Of Elfwine, son of Lothíriel and Éomer. SR 1434 - Peregrin Took becomes 32nd Thain of the Shire. SR 1436 - Death of Glóin, father of Gimli. SR 1455 - Death of Prince Imrahil. Imrahil's son Elphir succeeds him as Prince of Dol Amroth. SR 1462 - Birth of Holfast Gardner, son and heir of Frodo Gardner. SR 1482 - Samwise Gamgee leaves Middle-earth via Mithlond. SR 1484 - Meriadoc Brandybuck, aged 102, and Peregrin Took, aged 94; leave the Shire to live in Rohan and Gondor; death of Éomer, aged 93. His son Elfwine ascends the throne of Rohan. SR 1488 - Death of Prince Elphir, son of Imrahil, 23rd Prince of Dol Amroth. Elphir's son Alphros succeeds him. SR 1503 - Death of Faramir, aged 120. His son Elboron succeeds him. SR 1516 - Death of Prince Alphros, 24th Prince of Dol Amroth, son of Elphir. SR 1541 - Death of Aragorn II Elessar, King of the Reunited Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor, 210 years of age and after a reign of 122 years; Aragorn's son Eldarion ascends the throne. Legolas builds a ship and sails into the west to the Undying Lands, taking Gimli (now a very old Dwarf) with him. SR 1542 - Death of Arwen, aged 2901. SR 1592 - A copy of the Red Book of Westmarch is made. SR 1606 - Death of Harding of the Hill, Sam Gamgee's heir and great-grandson.

Awesome reaction from you both, and a couple of things to answer some of the questions you had during the movie: 1. Yes, when the Elves go to the Undying Lands, it's basically heaven. Frodo and Bilbo are going because they had the ring for so long and aided in its destruction. After Rosie dies, a ship is sent back for Sam and he goes as well, for the short time he bore the Ring. 2. Aragorn rules as King for about 150 years. After he dies, his son, Eldarion, becomes King, and Arwen eventually dies some years later. 3. Faramir and Eowyn do get together, and thus unite the kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan, making a single country. 4. Legolas and Gimli spend time traveling through some more far-flung parts of Middle Earth, rooting out some remaining evil men. Eventually, they sail together to the Undying Lands. 5. Denethor despairs so much because in the book, it's made clear that he has a seeing-stone as Saruman did. Sauron has used the stone to poison Denthor's mind and make him hopeless to ever winning without the Ring. The films make it a bit more that Denethor is just kind of crappy, and you watched the Extended version, which fleshes this out better in The Two Towers (the theatrical version doesn't include the scene with Boromir and Faramir, leaving it a bit more unclear as to why Faramir does what he does). It's also worth remembering that Pippin fulfills the things Galadriel told him in the first film, that he would find his courage (which he does in a huge way throughout ROTK). These movies are eminently rewatchable, and if you both revisit them further, you'll spot a whole lot of other things as well. Thanks for your awesome reaction videos. Watching your growth into the world of different movies has really been a joy to watch. Thanks for everything you do!

Rick Moreno

Yes to BoB. She should watch lethal Weapon series too.

Brent Petty

Dearest Cassie, you gave Carly a magnificent gift with this series. Do you think she can handle ‘Band of Brothers’ or ‘Chernobyl?’ McKenzie and I want to send you a package for your next Live. Something Texas-y. When is it? Just want to make sure, you have no nut allergies?

Lamar Smith

It took JRR Tolkien more than 15 years to write the story, so he was able to get it "right." The films are very loyal to the books.
