Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King (w/ Carly) - Full Reaction - Full Reaction

DUN DUN DDDUUUNNNN!!! It is here! We finally finished this series together! It was seriously a joy to share this with Carly! You obviously can't recreate the magic and feeling of your first time viewing, but the second time you feel like you know the characters already and your heart is with them from the beginning again. Still can't believe this was ~20 years ago and I have yet to see something as impressive a feat of film making as these movies are.

*Update: fixed the sync issue (hopefully)

Just finished watching all six LotR reaction videos. I have seen the movies many times, but they’re more fun watching along with ‘friends’. A few points which might already be in past comments, but worth repeating: I wish there was a production like this of Tolkien’s earlier story of the love and terrifying adventures of Beren and Luthien. They were like Aragorn and Arwen, human and elf, but in the First Age, over 6000 years earlier. A version of the story is in The Silmarillion, published after Tolkien’s death. Luthien was much more central to her plot than Arwen, and the most powerful character. It was inspired by Tolkien’s wife, Edith. In 1917 he was slowly recovering from trench fever, which he caught at the terrible and enormous Battle of the Somme the previous year. While they were out walking through the woods, they came to a little clearing and she spontaneously began to dance for him. He was utterly enchanted. He wrote of the time when Beren first saw Luthien exactly like this. After his wife died, Tolkien wrote to his children that he wanted the name LUTHIEN inscribed on her stone at the bottom. He described her dancing, with raven hair and “her eyes brighter than you have seen them.” She was his Luthien, and she knew it. When JRRT died two years later, his children had BEREN inscribed on his stone. Luthien is the “elf maiden” Aragorn is singing about in elvish in the wilds before Frodo is stabbed on Weathertop. He is thinking also about Arwen, who was said to look much like Luthien. But I don’t know who could have seen both, except Galadriel. Author A. A. Milne was at the same battle at the same time as Tolkien and was also sent home with trench fever in November 1916. If not for the illness, they would probably have died in the war, and there never would have been a Middle Earth or Winnie-the-Pooh.

xunegrapse

I love the theory that the third eagle in the end was for Gollum, because Gandalf assumed that because the ring was destroyed, Gollum would be free of its influence. What a tragic character.

MSP138

"DOMINOS!" "DOMINOS!"😂

Chris Clarke

R.I.P. Bernard Hill (King Theoden).

Richard Maurer

Absolutely adore seeing new peeps fall in love with Aragorn ☺

Daniel Mooney

Once again, a wonderful reaction.

Richard Maurer

"Gimri? Gimri!" XD

Andrew Myers

If you're using the extended edition 4k discs, and want to start from disc 2 it starts at 2:07:42:26 on Cassie's reaction

AdrianF

Love the final credits in this movie over the white background and the actors' names alongside an image of their character

SeanATX

Great Reaction ladies. Well worth the long journey with you two. Thank you.

Rick Williams

This is true! I also call BS on Denethor running to the end of the prow. It was well over a mile from the tombs to there and the tombs were on a lower level as well! He would have fallen and burned to ashes well before he got back to the citadel. LOL

MertzRocks

now you just need to watch all of the Extras.. they are just as long as the movie, but so worth it for all the background info. So great

Cubazoan

Exactly 🙂 It's in the FAQ

Björn Karlsson

The idea is that you watch your copy of the movie with them.

Comics with Drew

You're getting the sound of the movie you watch. If the reaction vid left the sound on as well you'd have the two sound tracks going simultaneously, and if you don't sync it EXACTLY right, it becomes terribly distracting.

Joon S

Hmm are you from Sweden? If you are, maybe you can help me with my project on popcorn request 🤔😁 Hmm... I think every reactor doing the same with the audio when its full movie. A very blury movie with a clock and no sound. The copyright guys are hopeless 😔😔😔

Björn Karlsson

post it again with sound and I will keep subscribing every month. If not I cancel it.

Peter Schön

I have to say I am disappointed. To at least add the sound is not copyright. Wasted money for that. Not show the screen is right but the sound should be there. You don't get copyright for that.

Peter Schön

So wonderfully magical. I can't believe I got to watch all these again, seeing them through your eyes for the first time and now through your sister's. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect Christmas present, thank you so, so much. Getting to watch these movies with you is everything.

Kai

The witch king was seriously weakened by Merry stabbing him with the elven blade given to him by Gladrial. Now a fun fact... The Chanting of the Orc armies at the battle of Helms Deep & Gondor was recorded at a Rugby game. New Zealand were playing against either Australia or South Africa, (I can't remember which now as it was so long ago). At half time, Peter Jackson came onto the pitch with some recording equipment & asked the 36,000 + crowd to chant the lines he asked them to chant. Some of the chants he asked the crowd to stamp there feet while marching on the spot. The chants & foot stamping you hear in both movies are the crowd at a rugby game, a home game for the All Blacks at Wellington Stadium :)

Sean colenso

In Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo and Sam are watching the wood-elves leaving Middle Earth, never to return. That was Sam's premonition of Frodo also leaving Middle Earth in ROTK....

JRCortez

A lot of the buildings and stuff were miniatures. So they'd build a smaller, scale replicas and plice that with some of the city that they actually did build as well as studio work combined with CGI. I say miniatures, some of them were like 20ft tall. People needed cranes and stuff to work on some of 'em.

S1lm4r1l

That line, "no man can kill me", was after Carly's comment. Maybe she had seen a clip of it =)

Grad

Let's not forget Smeagol and Deagol were the local hooligans. Sneak thieves and pickpockets. So they didn't have much moral character to begin with especially Smeagol.

Reed James

Totally agree. While I don't agree with 100% of PJ's choices, overall the good far outweighs the bad.

Richard Maurer

I would add that filming in NZ helped keep the studio interference to a minimum, which unfortunately can not be said for the Hobbit Trilogy.

Richard Maurer

Ive said it before, but to do just the journey of the books true due justice it would take a 10 season series with 10, 2 hour episodes each season. There is just so much stuff in the books that can't properly translate to screen. But Peter Jackson did a dang good job.

LordGrailKnight

Its hard to pick out exactly why these movies were so outstanding, but the truth is that it was a perfect combination of the right director, the right actors, and the right technology, with the right producers and right place. The whole enterprise was done, start to finish with passion and love by everyone, and I mean everyone, involved. Every member of the cast and every member of the crew LOVED the project they were working on, LOVED the characters and world they were portraying, and probably most importantly the LOVED each other. From all accounts working on the set of lord of the rings was a heavenly experience full of joy for all the people involved. Right down to the Kiwi folks in New Zealand who to this day still remember the experience as one of the best parts of their lives. Honestly, in today's much more cynical world, and by extension much more cynical people, the PJ Lord of the Rings is a sweet breath of fresh air, and honestly manages to shine light and hope into many lives over these past 2 decades. Hope is a powerful thing, and for many of us this modern day mythos pours it out in droves.

LordGrailKnight

It makes absolutely no sense that the Witch King would be able to break Gandalf's staff.

Nathan Bishop

Good info there, but just one correction, Stuart Townsend is Irish, not British.

Ben

From what I've read of the Tolkien lore on this subject it's a misinterpretation of a prophecy - "not by the hand of man shall he fall." Since Merry, who is a Hobbit not a human, stabbed him first the prophecy is technically correct. Also the sword Merry carries is no ordinary sword, which was never explained in the film (although if everything in LotR was fully explained there would need to be an hour or more of film consisting entirely of exposition). The gist of it is the sword carried by Merry was a magic (or in this case, anti-magic) sword that opened the Nazgul up to damage by a normal sword - Eowyn's sword - which otherwise wouldn't have harmed him. In the book the sword was given to Merry by Tom Bombadil, but since he isn't in the film it was given to him by Aragorn, whom I've always assumed found it at Weathertop.

Richard Maurer

I have been watching this movie for 20 years... and "you bow to no one" still gets me every time.

Joey

I know I'm late in this (internet down) but I have to say how much I hate that stupid "I am no man" line. Like Carly said, "man" means human, especially in Middle Earth, double especially from an English Language professor, triple especially from a Catholic on top of it. From a quick look, the Nazgul became vulnerable from being stabbed by Merry- anybody could have killed him.

Mike Lemon

Seconded this. Especially Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm not sure if Carly has seen Star Wars, but if she hasn't, that'd be cool too

Astraeos

or Star Wars

Aaron Taft

I've actually seen several reactors guess that line. My best guess is it's a intuitive leap people make because the Witch-King makes the the statement "no man can kill me" strongly to a women who is currently battling him. So the idea that she, being a women, might be able to kill him flows naturally from his statement.

Richard Maurer

Excellent points well made.

Just Plain Bob

I have read the Harry Potters... but never Lord of the Rings. I might have said that people have told me I should read them. But I was going into the movies blind haha

Carly Popcorn

Can you watch more trilogy/franchise movies with Carly? For example, Pirates of the Caribbean?

LionBro

WOW.......[sigh]......this.......was........FUN!!!!! okay, hands down, these three reactions are now my new favorites above your solo reactions Cassie, sorry lol! I enjoyed every minute of this reaction and same with the other two! so so so glad that your sister finally watched these and loved them! I laughed and loved every second of your reactions! now I so hope the two of you will eventually watch "The Hobbit trilogy" together, that's something I'd love to see as well lol! thanks for making my Christmas a special one! thanks for making me smile, I so hope you and Carly love the gifts I sent you for Christmas when you eventually open them! hope y'all had a wonderful and joyful Christmas! much love and support to you both, you're the best, Merry Christmas and "Hannon Le, Mellon" (Elvish Sindarin translates to Thank You, my Friend) lol! and of course....... stay classy Cassie🎄🎅🎁🥰😁😉👍

Wesley White

Theoden is one of the unsung heroes of the story: He listens to council but also knows when to override them. (Going to Helm's Deep turned out to be the right decision) He answers the call of Gondor even though he hadn't received help from them. He leads his army into battle at Minas Tirith personally even though he knows he will probably lose the fight and die. In battle he's keeping track of things such as reforming lines in chaotic situations and personally goes down to shore up the gate in Helms Deep which is brave and a great morale boost for the men. He sets up a good pick for a successor when his heir dies. He doesn't have a big ego (he knows Aragorn was the biggest reason for success at Helm's Deep)

Jonathan Hall

Cassie, I've loved both you and Carly's reactions to this series. And I agree with your thoughts on the series as a whole. LOTR taken as a single project, is quite possibly the greatest achievement ever in film. The world in it is so immersive to a point that few other films even come close to matching.

Rick Moreno

XD

Colin Gutierrez

Black Dwarfs? As if that's what people were really complaining about. Keep buying into Amazon's smear campaign against the very real and very warranted criticisms of the writing, story, and general disrespect for Tolkien that is the real reason people are complaining about the trash known as Rings of Power.

Richard Maurer

Find someone who looks at you like Carly looks at Aragorn.

Timothy Burrows

You've had one ending, yes... but what about SECOND endings?

Story Archer

It would be funny to watch you react to the animated Lord of the Rings movie, just to see how awful it is compared to Peter Jackson's films.

Nathan Bishop

No Andrew, but nice way to bait someone.

Matt Mabry

None of the the ones I watch, like Tolkien Untangled, Tolkien Lore, Men of the West give their support to RoP. As for the ones you mentioned, in deep geek called the writing on RoP weak/disappointing, and Nerd of the Rings has been widely called a shill for taking part in Amazon's publicity stunt preview showing in England. As for the Tolkien estate, them selling the appendices to Amazon for a boat load of cash is hardly a reason to believe they have any kind of integrity. If you somehow enjoy RoP, good for you, but don't to tell me it has any real standing as to it's being in any way faithful to Tolkien works. And before you try the tired argument that PJ's LotR wasn't faithful either - It was faithful to the spirit if not always the letter of Tolkien, as much as a movie can be, and PJ's worst changes were still closer to real Tolkien than anything on RoP.

Richard Maurer

"It's hard to pinpoint what it is about it".....it's literally the work put into the movies that isn't obvious. Please watch the making of the LOTRs. These movies were literally years in the making. They were a gamble and literally to this day no studio would greenlight the city that was required to make these 3 movies possible. Then watch the rings of power, despite the losers that can't stand black dwarves.

Andrew Ramos

So in your mind, you are also married to her?

Andrew Ramos

many of those same "scholars" gave their ring of approval to the rings of power....nerd of the rings, in deep geek, etc. (had to throw that in their). You act like the Tolkien estate didn't green light the rings of power. They actually denied some stupid ideas from HBO and other networks. So Richard, if you want to claim insight of the Tolkien estate you are going to have to wrestle it away from Christopher Tolkien himself.

Andrew Ramos

Yeah it takes a much longer time before the hobbits actually leaves the Shire.

Radwar

Well, Carly mentions a couple of times that she's read the books, but I think it's been a long time ago since she often acts like she doesn't know what's coming. But Cassie should definitely read them as they are better than the movies personally, and that's even though the movies are epic. There are several places where the books are better, several places where the movies are better and several places where I think both approaches are great.

Radwar

Well of course it's up to Cassie, but I would feel bad for not warning her against it.

Richard Maurer

If you say so…watch it, don’t watch it. It’s not my place to say. It’s up to Cassie if she wants to watch it.

Biggman83

I think it would be neat if Cassie and Carly gave a listen to all three of the closing songs ("May It Be", "Gollum's Song", and "Into the West") and ranked their favorites. I can never decide between Gollum's Song or Into the West myself, but they're all great.

Christopher B.

Yep, he sure did! He’s multi talented

Tara

I think the reason people mistakenly call Valinor heaven is that the Valar (the lesser gods of Middle-Earth) reside there. While it is a (somewhat) normal landmass on the other side of M-E, it is also protected by the Valar, so not just anybody can reach it.

Richard Maurer

You did mention the right wing, which while not a political party per se it implies a political leaning. And for the record, I too lean toward the left and I agree completely with KTVindicare's assessment of Rings of Power - It's garbage that has nothing to do with Tolkien. and I hope Cassie never watches it as it gives a heavily tainted impression of what occured in the Second Age of Middle-Earth.

Richard Maurer

It isn’t Heaven the elves that go there don’t die they are still walking around, but it is a different world so depends on how you want to imagine it. It is somewhat different for mortal races that go there like Frodo, but it will not bring the room down by being more specific as opinions vary.

Christopher Gray

Did I mention any political parties? Think you need to calm down mate! It’s Christmas ffs!

Biggman83

And John Rhys did the voice of Treebeard as well.

Matt Mabry

About 20 years ago, I bought my wife the same pendant and matching ear rings. I am grateful the the fan who gave you the pendant as well. As soon as I saw you wearing it my heart soared. Aragorn's ring was a nice touch as well. If you go out to www.noblecollection.com you can find similar LOTR treasures. Oh, and thank you both for a most outstanding holiday gift. I still have my leatherbound copy of the LOTR or AKA The Red Book of Westmarch. As a young man back in the 80's the cost was over $50.00 so now, who knows what it would cost. Some of the best quotes, "I am glad to be with you.. here at the end of all things" and of course, "Not all tears are an evil." I hope Carly gets a matching pendant as well. Oh, once again, for you Aragorn fans, please consider the movie, Hildago. True story. Stay warm and safe.

Matt Mabry

So interesting to see Merry and Pippin full of mischief and up on the tables singing and dancing during the trilogy, but at the end, when they got back to the Shire and the four of them were sitting at the table with their ale, they were quiet while all the other hobbits around them were having a good time. They were forever changed by what they experienced. I missed seeing mischievous Merry and Pippin.

Tara

All of the Star Wars movies are on the channel. She watched all 9 plus Rogue One and Solo. She has also seen the Mandalorian on the channel

Tara

the next Viggo Mortensen movie should be the History of Violence

zynjams

the best next Orlando Bloom movie should be Kingdom of Heaven the directors cut

zynjams

Get out of here, I'm as left wing as they come and that show is complete horse shit. Stop assuming people only dislike it for political reasons, they dislike it because it isn't Tolkein AT ALL, it's also horribly written, horribly acted (outside of a few notables) and otherwise just amateurish. It has amazing production values, that's about all it has going for it. If Cassie wants to react to it on her channel, fine it's her channel I'll skip those reactions. But don't you dare start bringing up politics as an excuse for why people don't want to see her react to it. It's wrong first of all, and secondly no one wants that here. So keep it to yourself.

KTVindicare

Managed to squeeze this in before Xmas! I can’t believe how much this film still makes me emotional 20 odd years after I watched it in the cinema. It’s my favourite book series ever, and it’s always such a treat to share it with new people. You guys need to re watch the films and pick up all the moments that Peter Jackson makes a cameo appearance. Bree - when the hobbits arrive in the village of Bree and are escorted through the streets. PJ is the drunk bearded guy munching on a carrot and burping to camera. Helms Deep - PJ appears in the line up on the wall before the battle begins. Pirate Ships - PJ is the crew mate that gets hit by Legolas’ wayward arrow after Gimli distracts him. Now you need to see Season 1 of the Rings Of Power together. I really enjoyed the show despite all the unwelcome press it got from the far Right wing Tolkien fans.

Biggman83

Best reaction to the best movie ever. When Peter Jackson designed the collapse of Sauron's tower, he was careful not to make it took like the Twin Towers in NYC. 9/11 was still fresh in people's mind and the last thing he wanted to do was remind them of that.

Fireteam Joker

The DVD extras really are amazing, every one of them - the cast interviews are particularly good.

Story Archer

The reason why the ring affected Smeagol and his brother so powerfully, so immediately was that, at that point, it had been lot for about 2,500 years... it had a lot of need and potency built up and when it perceived it's time had come, it unleashed it all. The two never had a chance. Also, Carli - love that you're growing your hair out... that casual high ponytail is just TOO cute.

Story Archer

Aww man and here I thought those were real bear cavalry. Kislev.

KTVindicare

Yes

Richard Maurer

Has Cassie seen Star Wars?

Aaron Taft

Troy, he went to the undying lands (because he was a bearer of a ring of power),... basically a heaven - a land without any pain, suffering,... and Sam ends up going there after he has many children (13) and his wife dies,... Sam becomes Mayor like 4x and turns over the red book to his daughter right before he goes on the ship (his reward for being a ring bearer). Its not a punishment, but a reward,...

ENC SW DV Rush

I've actually seen where people used that one comment to make up a narrative about Smeagol and Deagol being gay. I'm not even English and I've heard that expression before. They were cousins however, most reactors seem to assume they were either brothers or unrelated friends.

Richard Maurer

You know, the dvd extras are absolutely amazing. It would be so great if you could react to those, but even if you don't you'd probably enjoy watching them. If you have the dvd sets, there are two full disks of extras for each movie: one about how they chose to adapt the books, and one about the actual making of the film. Tons of interviews and you get to see quite a lot of the cast just goofing around with each other.

Rosanne Stewart

When Carly predicted the line, No man can kill me, but what about a women. Did that make anyone think shes seen this before? I gonna say she hasn’t seen it. But was that line ever said before that point in the movie?

TinCan Cosmanaut

I also cry every time Aragorn says that… one of my favorite lines

Tara

Cassie and Carly, if you leave the credits rolling for a few more seconds, they have drawings of all the cast members… by the way… Aragorn looks SO good on the poster you have for this movie, Thank you!

Tara

A fantastic reaction as always. Thank you, ladies. I am so pleased that Carly enjoyed these movies (I knew she would) and I'm ecstatic that you ended up watching the extended editions (when the YouTube edits of these last two movies drop, I will comment in the live chat on what scenes were missing from the theatrical cuts; you may be surprised). Also, her observation about there being a "purity" to these films is very astute. That is just as due to the sublime writing of JRR Tolkien as it is to the masterful filmmaking of Peter Jackson and company. Not much to add here... Just one quick note, Cassie: at one point you say Christopher Lee is "perfect" as Gandalf, but Christopher Lee is actually the name of the actor who played Saruman. Ian McKellen plays Gandalf. Just FYI. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

This was beyond perfect. Thanks for this, and Merry Christmas

Hannah Mather

Most of the riders of Rohan were actually women with fake bears because they owned the horses!

Jayson Phillips

Based on your mini conversation around the 45 minute mark there is value for the 2 of you in watching the behind the scenes footage for these movies. Not on camera necessarily but they are very entertaining to watch and absolutely filled with information. Its clear when you watch them that the cast and crew shared in an amazing experience making these movies.

My_Cousin_Mose

"She rides for love" LOL that was funny. And that little convo at about 117 min was so "tender". Such a great reaction Cassie and Carly. Thanks for giving me another reason to watch my favorite movies.

My_Cousin_Mose

Also, one of the actors up for the role of Aragorn was Nicolas Cage - really glad that didn't happen.

Richard Maurer

Cassie and Carly - if you're interested there are a number of Youtube channels made by Tolkien scholars who have videos that can answer any questions you have, all based on Tolkien's writings (unlike the Rings of Power series, had to throw that in there). you can find out everything about what happened that led up to The Lord of the Rings to what exactly happened to the members of the fellowship after they went their separate ways, as well as many more topics.

Richard Maurer

It's okay to have an opinion, even the wrong one. Frodo didn't fail, because as Tolkien stated no one could have thrown the ring in, it was simply too powerful. Frodo's task wasn't to throw the ring in, it was to carry it to Mt. Doom, which few could accomplish without being corrupted long before they had reached their goal. If you remember, Gandalf believed that Gollum had some part to play "for good or ill". So everything that happened in Mt. Doom was fated to happen. Gandalf even had a third eagle with him when he went to rescue Frodo and Sam, it was there in case they needed to bring Smeagol back too.

Richard Maurer

The two of you are the gift that keeps on giving! Great reaction to a great movie. You are the best!

Dave

All I'm going to say short and sweet is that "Everyone needs a Sam!" Have a great Christmas weekend everyone 🎉🎂.

David Freese

@Robert I agree! I love Hidalgo. I just watched it recently and learned about the information I posted. Definitely one for Cassie to watch! Hint hint… Cassie 😉 I mean, it’s not like you don’t have any other movies that people are asking you to see. 😜

Tara

2:01:40 lol you guys say "NO!" when the evil dad gets hit lol just a bit off

Connor P

Yay Thank You Cassie! Have a Merry Christmas to You, your family, and your team!

Johnny Liu

Did you know Gimli's helmet is the same one his dad Gloin wears in the Hobbit movies?

David RedEagle

"My friends...you bow to no one." Every time. Every goddamn time. Makes me cry like a little baby. And your love for Sam is everything. Always my favorite character, and--as far as I'm concerned--the true hero of the story.

Steve Mercier

What a lot of you may not notice, is that Aragorn is wearing Boromir's wrist guards. Aragon put them on after he died and wore them the whole time in the last two movies up to him being crowned king. You can see that his wearing them if you look when the camera angle is right. He wore them as a reminder to keep his promise to Boromir that he will not let the white city fall.

LightsCameraJake

This has been so enjoyable to watch, all of the movies. I got a kick out of a couple times when Carly had almost the exact same reaction as Cassie did last year. Merry Christmas.

Mark James

To you too Jake!

Robert da Spruce

Hey robert I know you from Dasha's channel! Small world! Happy holidays again my friend!

LightsCameraJake

Best Christmas present I could get! I'll be spending my Christmas with the Fellowship and Cassie and Carly. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Scott Macaulay

The Ring is its own safety measure. The closer it is to Mount Doom, where it was created, the stronger its hold over the bearer becomes. No living creature could possibly have the willpower to actually destroy the Ring, which is why they needed Gollum to come along with them.

Ben Livingstone

Quenya is inspired by Finnish, but Sindarin (which we hear most in the movies) is inspired by the sound of Welsh.

Ben Livingstone

I support this as well. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

I found the first 100 pages tedious. Unfortunately, I reached that point at the beginning of a final exam period in college, and read the entire trilogy during that exam period. My transcript reveals when this was; there is a noticeable dip in my grades that semester!

Mingo Wayama

Then why did you say "an early death" when Sam joined him decades later? Also why did you say "punishment" when it's clear in the books that it isn't that at all. Frodo didn't have to go to the undying lands, he was invited and went of his own free will. Do you think the elves and Gandalf were punishing themselves by going back to their lands? I'm sorry but if you read the books, you weren't paying attention.

Radwar

Great to see that Carly liked it. Also sorry if I'm dead wrong but Cassie were you not feeling well during the recording of this? It seemed like you were a little under weather.

Jyn Jilly

Not sure what happened, this was in sync with the video for about an hour but then started to go majorly behind, was really quite difficult getting it in line

Fraser

I read the books, thanks. It's called an opinion.

Odd Thomas

I've mentioned KISS KISS BANG BANG elsewhere as a film that you should see, especially since it's set at Christmas. There's a great joke about RETURN OF THE KING in the film (I won't spoil it) that you might get a kick out of.

Matt Rose

You obviously haven't read the books as the reason he was invited to the undying lands was because he was a ring bearer and it left him a bit corrupted which is why Bilbo was invited as well. Sam even though he didn't have the ring long, was invited as well and he joins Frodo much later after his wife dies. Also going to the undying lands isn't a punishment as it's about as close to heaven as you can get and he lives a long time in peace.

Radwar

Well that was one heck of a LOVELY reaction, ladies! This will be the longest comment so far in the thread (sorry!). I want to address a few questions I heard you (mostly Carly) ask and offer a few other tidbits as well... "How did she learn Elvish" As @fingers of ink above said, it wasn't Elvish Eowyn spoke. It was the language of Rohan, loosely based on Old English and Anglo Saxon tongues. Side note/fun fact: Tolkien's Elvish was loosely based on Finnish. Theoden asks, "What do we owe Gondor?" One of the earlier Stewards of Gondor actually GAVE those lands to Northmen who came to Gondor's aid in 2,510. Gollum already had the One Ring under the Misty Mountains for many years and the Ring is not destroyed until 3,019. How did they film that awesome sequence of Minas Tirith showing Gandalf's ride through the many levels? A combination of CGI married to wide shots of the huge miniature of the city (they called them 'bigatures') along with a few closer shots filmed on small sets of parts of the city. Watch the extras ("the making of") and you will see this and so many more insane things they did to get this production JUST RIGHT. Not perfect, in my opinion but just right. The name Mithrandir is the name the Elves gave to Gandalf. It means 'Grey Wanderer' and the men of Gondor use it, too because many/most are descended from the three houses of the Elf-friends that helped in the first wars against Morgoth (Sauron's old boss! if you can believe it) almost 7,000 years ago. The flower(s) of the White Tree and the flowers seen on the beheaded statue are not the same. Those crowning the statue head were on a trailing plant, like a vine and had six tiny, slender petals. The White Tree has much fuller petals and more of them on each blossom. Another white flower was seen in The Two Towers: Symbelmyne (pronounced like "symbol-Myrna") grows on the graves of the Royal houses of Rohan outside Edoras. It is similar to an anemone flower. This flower is also called Alfirin (and is mentioned in the new series The Rings of Power). An observation: You girls all seem to get it before it happens! All the women I've seen react to this KNOW that Eowyn is "no MAN" and so MUST have a chance at slaying the Witch-King. Of course Merry helped. He struck first and it caused the Witch-King enough pain to distract him and let Eowyn finish him off. Epic scene, that! Both Eowyn and Merry were sorely hurt by simply striking the foul Undead Wraith that the Witch-King was. They came under the spell known as The Black Breath and were later healed by Aragorn (though that isn't implicit in the movie). Also, the Witch-King broke (perhaps even shattered?) Eowyn's arm with that gigundo morning-star he swung. I KNOW it's JUST A MOVIE but I call bullshit (sorry, no other word quite fits) on Denethor's fiery death falling from the prow of the Citadel. It was well over a mile from tomb to prow so he would have fallen dead long before he got to make that over-dramatic leap. Jus' sayin'... lol The Eye of Sauron: To most "purists", this is a big deoparture from the book and a mistake in many of their opinons. At the time of Frodo, Sauron's spirit was divided, much of it being within the ring itself so in a way, Frodo is actually carrying Sauron. He cannot assume a physical form again until and unless he obtains the ring again. The eye is a "representation" of Sauron and it wasn't supposed to be something everyone could see. IDK how else to describe it, maybe another commentor. If Sauron DID get the ring, he would have been able to take physical form again and then plunge the world into darkness (again! The end of the Second Age was under his first darkness). > Wow, I'm long-winded, aren't I? lol < Just another tidbit about the ring when you were urging Frodo to "Do it!" "You can do it!"... To quote *ahem* ME: "Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit, Man... Drop it in? No one can." It's that strong. They never showed the stone in the movie but Galadriel calls Aragorn "Elessar" at their parting in The Fellowship... That is the name he takes as King of Gondor. In full, he is King Elessar Telcontar--meaning King Elfstone of House Strider. He was supposed to have had a large green jewel, the Elfstone, which was another heirloom of his house, like the sword Narsil (supposedly meaning "red and white flame" but literally meaning "fire star" in Elvish. The was forged in the first age by Telchar of Nogrod--a Dwarf. Elvish names were easier to say than Dwarvish, lol. When Bilbo asks about the Ring at the end and then says, "pity..." as to its loss, the ring has done so much damage to Bilbo (who used the ring fairly often in the 60 years he had it but usually just to avoid others) that he STILL can't stop thinking about it, desiring it. Damn you, Sauron... At the Grey Havens, you can see Elrond and Gandalf each wearing one of the Elven rings. Galadriel showed Frodo her ring Nenya in Lothlorien by her fountain. Elrond bore Vilya the blue ring and Gandalf had Narya the red ring. His ring was why Gandalf was so adept with fireworks (and NOT just for the amusement of Hobbits!) Frodo received three grievous wounds (blade, sting and teeth) along his journey and would never fully recover from any of them. The wound from the Witch-King's Morgul Blade was especially troublesome but Frodo felt remnants of the original pain of each of the three wounds on every anniversary of them. This, along with the fact that he was a Ring-bearer, accorded him a place on that ship (this commentor says they shoudn't have said it was the LAST ship; imo). The passage of the Ring-bearers marked the end of the Third Age, starting the Fourth Age. The Undying Lands or Valinor do kind of equate to heaven. It is where the Valar and the Maiar (say My-ar) live in peace. They are basically the deities of the world, though since the end of the First Age they have taken no "active" part in the affairs of Middle Earth. All who go there are healed in full and can live in peace but not forever unless they are of Elf-kind or greater. So Bilbo and Frodo (and Sam according to the book; sorry that's spoiler-ish) would eventually pass. And one final thing you'll love to hear, I hope... SAM AND ROSIE HAVE THIRTEEN KIDS! At the end of the movie, little Elanor greets her dad Sam first and then Rosie comes out holding baby Frodo. Seven boys, six girls all told. Elanor is actually named for a flower that grew in Lothlorien and she was the first Hobbit with that name. I promise not to write a novel for a comment next time! lol That said, if you have any other questions, I would be delighted to answer them (or try to).

MertzRocks

Edited, with the timestamp for you.

KTVindicare

1:59:24 thereabouts. That's the scene where it starts and it continues up until the Gondor scene ends and we get to Aragorn and the Black Ships. The Reaction falls behind the movie by about 10 seconds or so.

KTVindicare

He's not dying early though. This is made pretty clear in the books. Lol

Aaron

Could you give me the timestamp for that?

Cassie

good luck!!!

Cassie

Note to the editor. During the first battle scenes of Minas Tirith the reaction falls out of sync with the movie and then corrects itself when it gets back to the scene with the Ships and Ghost army.

KTVindicare

Holy wow! You did a great Gollum impression, Cassie! I'm impressed! lol

Damon

In my opinion, the best of all these "making of" bits is THE TAMING OF SMEAGOL featurette in the extras for The Two Towers. Without Andy Serkis, Gollum would have been far different and not just the voice... EVERYTHING about the character would be a bit different and maybe even a little "off". IMO

MertzRocks

I'll throw in my two coppers for a third! :D

MertzRocks

Not sure when I can watch this reaction. Getting ready to hit the road with the family. But I’m looking forward to watching this final installment! Merry Christmas to you and your family Cassie!

Robert da Spruce

Yes the language of Rohan is loosely based on Old English/Anglo-Saxon and Tolkien's Elvish is loosely based on Finnish.

MertzRocks

Very interesting Tara! I did not know that. Hidalgo is an excellent movie by the way. Cassie, you should definitely consider checking it out!

Robert da Spruce

Lothlorien (where Galadriel and Celeborn live) was assaulted three times. Also Gimli's dad Gloin was busy fighting orcs that attacked Erebor and Dale.

MertzRocks

I know people say Frodo leaving on the ships is due to his wound, but for me it's the price he has to pay for failing. He didn't save the world, Sam did. Frodo turned evil at the end, only sending the ring into the fire because he was trying to steal it back from Gollum and they fell in. He's not the hero. Sam always stepped in to help him. The ship and an early death is Frodo's punishment.

Odd Thomas

The logical next step is to react to "the making of" the LOTR videos. The process was quite amazing. Those videos should be reacted to as if they are movies, in my opinion.

Andrew Ramos

I wholeheartedly second this suggestion. :D

Damon

This is sweet and tender! :)

Celeste McAllister

Good idea doing a 'First-Rewatch' with Carly has she watched The Shawshank Redemption? PIB anniversary is coming up! :)

Celeste McAllister

Won't be able to watch this one until after the holidays, but I am so looking forward to it!!! Thanks so much for doing these again with Carly! It's been a pleasure to watch along with you two! Merry Christmas!

John Casamassa

That has been an absolute delight to watch with you lovely ladies. Seeing you both crush hard on Legolas and Aragorn has been wonderful. It’s a shame we will never get to experience this again. I hope you both have a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year.

Cassie and Carly, did you know that Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) was a last minute replacement? Daniel Day Lewis was PJ first choice, but turned it down as well as Nicolas Cage. A British actor named Stuart Townsend was cast and spent months preparing for the role, but PJ ultimately felt that he was too young to play Aragorn at only 27 years old. Viggo almost turned it down also because he didn’t want to be away from his son for 18 months, but his son was a fan of the books and talked him into it. He arrived on set a couple days before shooting began and didn’t have the couple months of training that the rest of the cast had. After filming, the sword master who worked with the cast said that even though Viggo didn’t have the same training as the rest of the cast, he was the best swordsman he’d ever worked with. Viggo is also a very skilled horseman and in the movie, Hidalgo, he did all his own stunts on the horse, even one the stuntman couldn’t do. After that movie finished filming, Viggo bought the horse who played Hidalgo. Another Interesting fact, the actor who plays Gimli, John Rhys Davies is actually 6’ 1” tall, which makes him the tallest member of the fellowship. 🍿

Tara

Can't wait to watch this. I think you would both enjoy this video. It's a clip of Tolkien himself reading the charge of the Rohirrim https://youtu.be/G6jhKEqtLxM

Andrew Hansen

Ah man, I was refreshing hoping to catch this as soon as it was uploaded and then I fell asleep for a few hours and woke up just to see it was posted AS i fell asleep. Ugh. Can't wait for this conclusion! These reactions have arguably been even better than the first time through, Cassie and Carly play off of each other so well.

KTVindicare

Eowyn was actually speaking Old English/Anglo-Saxon. We heard a bit of it in the last movie also, like the lament at Theodred's funeral.

Ben Livingstone

Lessgoo, can't wait to watch this on Xmas day

Watching Cassie watching Carly for her reaction at certain points and holding in spoilers has been lots of fun. Also Carly's reaction in general and Cassie reliving it has been a blast. This is certainly the movie franchise to do it with. And also Cassie still asking Carly whats going on sometimes (little details) even though she has already seen it. 😂 Looking forward to watching the final chapter of this story.

Pickupthepieces76

Book spoilers: The Elves were busy with their own battles against the orcs; Galadriel and her husband, Celeborn, (also Legolas's dad, Thranduil) were busy killing orcs. From the Siege of Gondor/Battle for Pelennor Fields to the Battle of the Black Gate was ten days. Aragorn lives for another 120 years with Arwen.

Michael Hawk

Ahhh….this one will have to wait a few days for me to watch 😢.

Biggman83

British guy here: 'my love' equates more like 'my friend'. It's not literal.

Odd Thomas

If I’m not mistaken, my dear friend, you sent a message of support to my daughter several months back when she had COVID. I’m deeply, profoundly grateful for that. You did a very nice thing, thank you. We’ve both had the flu this week, so I’m especially looking forward to her getting her PiB swag. You know, she teases me unmercifully that “Cassie likes me best! Cassie said I was ‘sweet’ and ‘darling,’ and it’s true that she did….. it both gives me joy and, admittedly, stings just a little. I have thick skin and a broad back, I’ll be fine.

Lamar Smith

Lamar, I don't speak for Cassie, but I know she prefers Instagram...

Jon Johns

The first book? You just have to get through the first 150 pages, but it really picks up after that!

Michael Hawk

Couldn’t get through the first one honestly🎄❄️🥂🥡

N M

My all time favorite movie trilogy, read all the books by JRR Tolkien. Peter Jackson did a tremendous job, so glad you shared this with Carly and us ! Happy holidays 🎅✌

Danny (Icarus)

Dearest Cassie, you promised me PiB stocking stuffers would make it to me in time and you TOTALLY delivered!!!! McKenzie is going to be so happy. Thank you SO much. She wants to get a photo with her stuff sent to you, what is the best way to do that?

Lamar Smith

[laughing excitedly] YES!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to watch this, it's gonna be so EPIC!!!!! can't watch it right now because it's 1 in the morning here in Carlsbad, CA, but when I do, I'll be sure to leave a really good comment next time lol! this being my favorite of the entire trilogy! so glad you finally introduced Carly to this amazing epic fantasy trilogy and I'm so happy she enjoyed watching them! have I mentioned I'm excited LOL🤣 have a very Merry Christmas to you and Carly and the rest of the family! much love and support, and as always........... stay classy Cassie lol!🎄🎅🎁🥰😁😉👍

Wesley White

Gosh, if I didn't have a job interview in 9 hours, I'd definitely stay up to watch this. Haha

Aaron

Like the Books, these Experience is a one of a kind thing Cassie. Especially nowadays where you can see how the film writing gets worse and worse every year. If you ever have the time you really should read the books (or listen to the Audio Books). It would be an amazing experience for you cause they are very different to the Movies. It was a pleasure and a joy to rewatch with you both again and i thank for it. Merry Christmas to both of you and your Family.

Curaitis

Merry Christmas to both you and Carly, Cassie!

John

Became a Patreon just for this. Watching now even though it’s almost 2am lol.

Josh

Really looking forward to these!
