Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Full Reaction

Woah, I feel like Twilight stole a few ideas from this... It was really fun to see especially Tom Cruise in this role! It was very dark though and depressing perhaps? I wanted more love, what's new? I did love the vampire theme though, anything to be festive!

**For some reason the first 20 minutes of the reaction is out of sync.. it eventually gets back into sync. I'll leave this up but will upload a fixed version this evening! Sorry about that!

**Update: The fixed version is live! Let me know if there are still any issues!

Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Full Reaction

Comments

Not sexy in the sense of Vampire Diaries, which I couldn't get into Vampire Diaries but had a female friend who liked it. "Maybe they should just go find murderers." Yep, like Dexter. "They can eat chickens and murderers." "I don't want to watch this." "What are we watching?" "That's very naked." A child vampire seems like such a tragic figure. Kirstin Dunst (then age 11) demonstrated she was an awesome kid actor. I also thought Tom Cruise did well. I like the atmospheric aspects. I like the New Orleans setting. (I have visited New Orleans several times.) I thought some of the stuff in Paris was wild. I was glad to see the Lestat reappearance at the end. I guess that is a "good" ending for Lesat. The movie is stylish but somewhat tedious to me. I read good things about the series but could not get into the series. I am also not big on this movie, though I appreciate it. The script gives a slow plot to me. I like BS Dracula and True Blood better, though I am not really into the vampire genre. Christian Slater is good in "Untamed Heart" (1993) which gets mediocre reviews but I have nostalgia for it -- Marisa Tomei is nice to look at. A love story.

Clay F

If you don't understand read the other books in Anne Rice's vampire universe. You won't regret it.

TeenyStudio Flicks

It was fun watching this again, I think next year we're going to have to watch 30 days of night, To get yet another side of what a Vampire truly is.

Powers209

I had a feeling you ladies didn't understand what you were in for. You grew up on romantic vampire movies and TV shows. I grew up with these kinds of vampire movies. Not much romance. I'm glad you ladies made it through. Great reaction. I hope you ladies don't have to many nightmares.

Rick Williams

We enjoyed this. Thanks Cassie! Your audio sounded off though. Like you were in a tunnel and it was picking up all the ambient noise around you. Maybe your noise cancelation was set too low? It doesn't sound bad in your solo reactions. Just these. Thanks again.

London Davis

Exactly what I was thinking!! Who in the world thinks vampires are nice? I guess we can thank twilight for selling that bs to us for years.

brooke atkins

Funny inside joke -- in the novelization of "Spider-Man" (where Kirsten Dunst plays Mary Jane Watson, MJ tells Harry Osborn that she watched "Interview with a Vampire" but "the little kid vampire freaked me out"

Michael Jung

You girls are living in a fantasy world. I guess you’ve been watching love movies, your whole life that you want every movie to be romantic. You kind of have to except that there’s all kinds of movies. Not every movie is happy go lucky. This is a movie about vampires after all. the feed on humans for god sake.

Michael Lynch

I thought the same! Other than the time Cassie's hubby goosed her during The Shining. That one doesn't count for me though. lol

Damon

You ladies are troopers! I'm afraid that the dark humor, which is comic relief for Horror film buffs, was not providing you any relief... just more horror. I guess the ending seemed inconclusive because the book this was based on, written by Anne Rice, was the first in a series of thirteen directly related and a few more loosely related to the storyline. Really great writing and by the time the film was made, the story was pretty well known so we knew where it was supposed to lead. Originally Anne was against Tom Cruise playing Lestat, but after she what he did with the character she was very pleased. The film sequel "Queen of the Damned" she was not pleased with but it is an interesting film. Different actor plays Lestat though.

BRT

Cassie, just to let you know, the vampires in Twilight have little to do vampires in most movies, who tend to consider humans only as prey, and nothing to do with vampires in mythology, where they were generally mindless beast-like killers. more like modern depictions of zombies than vampires.

Richard Maurer

Horror movies with happy endings are a bummer.

Richard Maurer

That always cracked me up.

China Andronicus

I love how people who haven't read the books don't ever get that Lestat is actually WAY better and nicer than Louis. Because he can read thoughts as he says at the start, he almost always feeds solely on evildoers. Those two prostitutes (the one he throws in the coffin) are murderers. Louis on the other hand just kills at random. Lestat and Claudia were actually really close as well, something Louis never knew. He has a really depressing backstory actually, his book (The Vampire Lestat) is excellent but so sad. Cruise did a fantastic job with him.

China Andronicus

THAT JUMP SCARE LOL! I think that tops when Cassie was startled during The Shining. 🤣

Christopher B.

I admit I was amused when Pitt bit into the rat and Carly commented on all the diseases it has. I don't think vampires have to worry about disease. 🙂

Stick Figure Studios

Your point is well made. Both types of stories have their place. If nothing else, my hope with this channel is that Cassie and Carly can be gradually weaned off of their need for a happy ending to every story. Some stories are just better without one.

Stick Figure Studios

It was their brilliant way to get what they wanted without being hunted down by the masses. No one could tell the difference and no one cared. Just remember one thing and most forget this..,The one who played the secondary villiain...Stephen Rea was also in many films including V for Vendetta if you haven't seen it :D

GamerGal8684

Lost Boys would be such a good reaction video for Halloween.

Robert Haynes

One of my favorite parts of this movie is when Louie goes to see the Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer thriller TEQUILA SUNRISE probably just for the title.

Jason Dolan

The point of the show in Paris was that the Vampires are hiding in plain sight. They are performing their rituals as a show. No one thinks it is real. Sort of a Jim Rose Circus type deal. Or even like a Barnum & Bailey in America - seeing the human freaks - if you haven't seen THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, it's basically THAT but with vampires.

Jason Dolan

I’m guessing the vampires in Twilight don’t kill anyone 😂😂. I grew up in the 80’s so pretty much all the vamps films I watched they were all evil killers apart from one of my favourite films My Best Friend is a Vampire which is a comedy (so no killing in that one lol). It has been some time since I’ve seen this one and personally I think it’s still a great movie but i think some other amazing Vamp films are The Lost Boys, Fright Night (I actually like both versions as well), Blade, 30 Days of Night, Underworld and one that’s really underrated is Daybreakers.

Dean Holt

Thanks for reacting to this movie :) Little side trivia: Tom Cruise sends a cake to Kristen Dunst every Christmas, which she and her family calls "The Cruise Cake" :)

Sindre Kristiansen

To answer one of your questions. The weapon Louis used to kill the vampires is called a "Scythe". An old agricultural hand tool for mowing grass and harvesting crops. The action of using one is know as "Reaping" or "To Reap". The Grim Reaper holds a scythe. Popular expressions: "We reap what we sow" "Reaping the benefits."

Zane From Canada

It's fine that you and Carly want to just watch happy movies, but just keep in mind that certain movies are meant to make us feel us sad and uncomfortable. I guess taste just has a lot to do with life experience. As someone who suffers from mental illness and harsh circumstances, I find dark and depressing films to be therapeutic. Maybe it's a "misery loves company" type of thing, but I just find myself drawn to a lot of dark and depressing movies where the characters face many hardships. I think adversity is a necessity for the truly great stories that stay with you. And I appreciate not always getting a happy ending, because that parallels our own lives where things don't always work out how we want them to. Although, I certainly enjoy more lighthearted films too. In fact, I would really love for you to react to Clash of the Titans (1981), which is definitely a more fun and romantic movie that I think you'll enjoy.

Nathan Bishop

Lestat out here trapping his man with a child. Typical.

Jason Dolan

So...vampire movies with happy endings is the goal? Check

nick bell

"because it was based on a book series that has over a dozen entries." Four at the time.

Mike Lemon

Tom Cruise tells the story of Oprah Winfrey walking out of the movie at the rat-eating scene and immediately calling him to scold him for making this movie. They joke and laugh about it now, but Oprah apparently still refuses to see the movie. :p

Alex Villarreal

Love your reactions, Vampire movies or Horror movies in general aren't everyone's cup of tea. I understand Carly's reluctance, especially if your vampire knowledge comes from Twilight.( Not a criticism ) Simply Apples and Oranges. Keep up the good work ladies and we'll keep watching!!!

Rob Galloway

This movie was huge when I was in high school. My friend and I raced to theater to see it cause we were teenager girls Inlove with Tom and brad. I had the movie poster for this on my bedroom wall. This and lost boys are the best vampire movies ever imo. I laughed to hard when Cassie said I hope they’re good vampires 🤦‍♀️ Wait are the bad? He’s evil!!! Um it’s a vampire movie!! What did you expect? Vampires kill people!! Then I quickly realized you’d only ever seen twilight ugh. Which happens to be the worse vampire movie ever made. I get the feeling you girls didn’t like this one. But wasn’t it kinda fun seeing Tom cruise as a bad guy? Whenever I think of Kristen dunst this is the only movie that comes to my mind. Same for Antonio bandares. I just think of this movie. I just love this movie. Maybe you’ll like Christine better lol probably not 😋 I know these movies aren’t your thing but thanks for doing them for us Cassie. They are some of your best reactions. 👍👍😊

brooke atkins

Cassie - I feel like a CONGRATS is in order for both you and Carly. I think I counted 9 "Oh My Gosh's!" in about 30 seconds during a particular scene which I'm certain will forever be looked back on as a true classic PiB moment! What an unexpected bonus you both managed to give us! :D LOL Do have a wonderful remainder to your week! =)

Dave Hill

For the past 28 years or so, Kirsten Dunst annually received a White Chocolate Coconut Bundt Cake on her birthday from Lestat, I mean Tom Cruise. Pretty cool. Loved the PiB duo reaction. This movie was kind of a big deal back when it came out. Saw it on the big screen and was quiet impressed by the makeup and general atmosphere of the film. Young Kirsten stole the show. Brad Pitt was getting noticed at the time, but Tom Cruise was already a mega star and naturally received top billing. Can't think of anyone besides Neil Jordan to direct and Elliot Goldenthal to compose the music for this movie. Over the years, I learned to appreciate it even more. Ahhh, 1994...good times.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Who knew that Tom Cruise would be responsible for the greatest jump scare on this channel? Gold.

OneManReactionFaction

But also take into the fact that vampires are a fictional allegory of black plague and STDs that started in Europe and Asia.

David Freese

Excellent job on this haunting film. Being an immortal vampire is clearly tragic. Far less tormenting, but still occasionally tedious, is to be mistaken for one. When I’m required to pass a background check for work an investigator may comically ask “Is this an interview with a vampire?” Because years ago, the day in my birthday was mistyped in a federal database as the first part of the year. Thereafter I was officially a hundred years older. Hopefully a background check concludes with witty assurances that I don’t look a day over 130 and nowadays 150 is the new 140. If so, I’ll play along, insisting I was roasted way worse at a vaudeville show in 1902, and suggest it’s time to return to my coffin. 🦇 After significant effort registrars will eventually correct an impossible birthday. But ending age targeted ads from hospices and mortuaries will remain problematic. Perhaps eventually ads for Transylvania travel agents and blood banks will appear as one’s age becomes increasingly ridiculous. Fortunately, most computer software now prevents abnormal age entry. But please consult an attorney if social security suggests a toddler retire or your tax returns require a birth date from the Gilded Age. I enjoyed “Interview With A Vampire,” but would have felt much more solidarity with immortals who struggle with supercentenarian paperwork. Maybe in the director’s cut. 😊

Steve Holton

Kirsten Dunst definitely gave the standout performance in this film. She was even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Claudia. I noticed the new camera angle and lighting. I noticed the same thing in the last Mandalorian reaction. Not to sure how I feel about it. Seems a little more contrasty to me. Also the camera is higher than you guys. Pointing slightly down. Where it used to be slightly lower, pointed up. I think I kinda like the old setup. But I’m not sure it’s because I was used to it. Or if it’s better. Maybe I’ll feel different as I get used to it. Who knows. I enjoyed the reaction though!

Robert da Spruce

True Blood anyone? That's why we have so many diseases,we drink to much rat blood lol

Celeste McAllister

As others have mentioned, this movies leaves a lot to figure out and continue, because it was based on a book series that has over a dozen entries. If you're a reader, the Ann Rice series is very good (especially the early books.) Cassie, as for your comment about why haven't Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt worked together since then? Tom Cruise is notoriously difficult to work with, and there's many Hollywood insiders who refuse to work with him again. Steven Speilberg, Brooke Sheilds, and two people from this movie. One is Brad Pitt, and the other is Thandie Newton (she played the house slave who Pitt's character fed off). She also started years later with Cruise in one of the Mission Impossible sequels. The man may make amazing movies, but he's out of touch with reality, and gives many people the creeps.

Ross Warshaw

You think this movie is depressing, the book is disturbingly depressing.

zynjams

Interview is a good movie, but the novel is SO much better. I guess that's always the case, and the movie catches the spirit of the book, but the novel really goes so much deeper, as do the sequels. I honestly think Let The Right One In is an even better vampire film though. Part of me really wishes reactors would watch more horror films, or at the very least not JUST watch them during October. There's so much great material there.

Brian Jones

I won't repeat what I said in the "upcoming" post. I'll just say plainly that I love this movie. In my twenties, when I still fancied I might become a filmmaker one day, I wrote a spec screenplay (my very first) for a feature film whose story involved vampires, so I got really into vampire lore (watching a number of different movies and reading a lot about them). This particular film and it's source material Anne Rice's book, were a particular influence on me. I saw the potential for these fictional creatures and their mythology to serve as a metaphor or whatever I wanted to say and, like Rice, I wanted to say things that were existential, religious and/or spiritual in nature. Looking back on it now, it was not a great script, but there's still a few things in it that I think have some merit. As for the movie, looking back on it, I think it's still great with a lot of things that have merit. It is probably my favorite vampire movie to this day.

Stick Figure Studios

This will be a first for me too. Happy to watch it with you. Edit: that was a bit darker than I expected.

Scott Macaulay

Yep. Props to her for doing the 180 on that. But man, she was pissed in the beginning. You can see it in the old interviews. https://youtu.be/ZQXSrgCTGAE?t=1380

Brian Jones

Some people just like to see the world burn, or in this case, like to see Cassie squirm For me, I love it when the girls just at a scare, but I am not one of these people who likes to see other people uncomfortable. I would much rather advise Cassie that a movie might be a tough watch, than to say "don't watch it". If I see she isn't digging it and clearly uncomfortable, I will just switch off Still never seen entire FMJ reaction.

Brian McGovern

Claudia, poor Claudia. her character was even younger in the book, she was around five years old, imagine being trapped in the body of a toddler forever. but, Anne Rice, who wrote the books, based the idea of Claudia on her own child who died very young. it was the idea of a child who would never die. very tragic. funny story about Tom Cruise's casting tho... Rice was PISSED when he got cast, she thought he was a terrible choice for Lestat. like you both, she'd only seen him as an action star! but after seeing the movie, Rice was so impressed she took out a full page ad in a newspaper apologizing and praising his performance, so there you go.

jenny from montana

Slater donated his fee for this to charity, I believe.

Patrick Flanagan

Ah yes, but was Lestat telling the truth? :) Lestat is hardly the most reliable of narrators.

Brian Jones

I would disagree w you on that but last time I gave my opinion on it I was called a racist so I have to word things carefully

GamerGal8684

It catches up. Otherwise it's easy enough to sink it off Kristen Dunst in the opening credits.

aarswft

In the book "The Vampire Lestat" Lestat explains that each of the people he kills in Interview were actually criminals and murderers. Louis portrayed him as a villain but when you hear Lestat's side, he's not as evil as they make him out to be.

Yaisu

Nathan Bishop

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet. This movie was initially going to have River Phoenix in the role of the interviewer, but he passed away before or during production and the part was taken by Christian Slater. EDIT: Probably brought up in credits.

Brian McGovern

You asked about money. It's more thoroughly explained in the book and kind of breezed over in the movie, but Louis and his family are very wealthy plantation owners, and that's what attracts Lestat to him in the first place. Lestat is actually a VERY interesting character and the second book is specifically centered on him and his maker, his life, and how he copes with modern times. It's unfortunate that we never got that film. Well, we sort of got that film with the adaptation of Queen of the Damned, but it wasn't done very well at all.

Brian Jones

Also not scary they are more action than scary so it shouldn't affect Carly that much.

ATrain 23

Hey Cassie, I love yalls content. I think you should watch the Underworld franchise. Probably my favorite vampire movies because "real" vampires don't sparkle!!! LOL

ATrain 23

I'm not crazy about Interview with the Vampire, but 28 Days Later is winning that poll 😂. Seriously, WTF? That will be interesting if it holds on, she'll be wondering how it made the scary but not too scary category. But I love that film, I think it's brilliant. I actually love all 4 options but 28 Days Later is the last one I'd recommend for Cassie.

Jay

What's weird is it eventually catches up I believe, about 20 min in.

aarswft

LOL, "At least they get to mature in a hot older body"

Patrick Gibbs

Yeah it's definitely not synched. They're jumping and reacting at least 10 seconds behind.

Ron K

Yeah. It's amazing how she was able to convince you that she was an older woman in a child's body.

Nathan Bishop

There's a new Interview with the Vampire series that's absolutely gorgeous, too - if you need any other tv suggestions!

Rue

oooo let’s get 12 Monkeys in here!

djKENTO

If you like Dark Shadows you’ll love this. Anne Rice was a fan of that series.

djKENTO

I would also love to see Near Dark which is the flip side of The Lost Boys…

djKENTO

There are many books in this series of books. This is what I consider Tom Cruise at his best. The cast itself is amazing and if you weren’t sure Claudia was MJ from original SpiderMan trilogy. It’s in her eyes. One of my fave vamp movies. I always say real vampires don’t sparkle lol

GamerGal8684

around the time this came out knew nothing about Anne Rice opposing Tom Cruise in the role of Lestat, so good on him for showing he could do it; but to me it was always the very young Kirsten Dunst who stood out

JL_83

Can you please watch The Lost Boys? It’s not likely to win the poll but it’s such a fun movie and you are almost definitely gonna love it.

Adam Grunther

One of the best vampire films. Although the bts is kind of controversial because even though Anne Rice is credited with writing the screenplay, director Neil Jordan has stated that it was actually himself who wrote and direct it. Rice has disputed this claim, we just don't know. Initially, Rice didn't want Tom Cruise as Lestat, but he won eventually won her over with his dedication and performance. He steals the show from Brad Pitt who was a relative unknown at this point until "Se7en", "12 Monkeys", and "Legends of the Fall" jumped started his career.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

Yeah, the commentary seems a little behind the movie.

Patrick Gibbs

Seems like your reactions are not in sync with the film as it’s playing

Shehab Dawoud

You know I've never seen this movie. Come to think of it ive never seen any vampire movie. The old Dark Shadows show from the 60s was pretty cool. The gothic soap opera, yeah I can dig that. Vampire movies though? Idk something about em just doesn't do it for me. Weird for me I know. 🤷‍♂️

William Bryan

I loved Norm MacDonald’s review of this movie 🤣. Personally, I loved this movie. All the performers were top rate Antonio Banderas, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt. Little Kirsten Dunst takes the cake though! Wow what a performance!
