Shaun of the Dead - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Great news, Carly and I ended up squeezing in a time together to watch Shaun of the Dead, so the true winner of our Halloween comedy poll got to be first! I found myself thinking about some of the scenes and quotes days after and laughing! "What's the matter David? Never heard of a shortcut before?" "batman soundtrack? throw it!" I always think funny movies are funnier the next watch!

Shaun of the Dead - Full Reaction

Comments

Outro Carly: "I actually feel kind of ill right now." Cassie: "I didn't hate it. I just watched it." Carly: "Yeah, yeah, it kind of like happened to us." Excellent movie for October. My first watch. I like the movie. Hilarious. Clever and has heart. Good music. Liz is pretty. That's cool the movie quotes Betrand Russell. I may rewatch to pick up more of the intricacies/references. I don't count myself as a member of the rabid fan base who thinks this movie (or the trilogy) is the most briliant of all time, but I might after a couple of rewatches. I am not really into the traditional horror genre. I tend like horror/comedy (e.g., Zombieland, Dale and Tucker, Shaun of the Dead) better than straight horror. I watched Hot Fuzz a few weeks ago and liked it -- hilarious and had some great one liners. I might be with the consensus in liking Hot Fuzz slightly better than Shaun, but both are dang good. I was glad that by chance I had watched Point Break a few months earlier. The only other Edgar Wright movie I have seen is Scott Pilgrim, which is a top 200 movie for me b/c I have nostalgia and like the creativity, and a decent focus on music. I took my son to see Scott Pilgrim in the theater in 2010 at his request, and ended up liking the movie, and have watched a few times since. As for other Edgar Wright, I want to watch Baby Driver. I did watch the first 20 minutes or so of Last Night in Soho -- I need to give it another chance.

Clay F

I do love the Cornetto trilogy. Yes, they're funny at time, touching at times and gross at times. After watching Shaun, you'll never be able to listen to Queen the same way again.

Stephen Dias

When Hot Fuzz came out, Wright's imitation of the Jeunet and Caro editing style wowed us, and it is very effective. The problem is that now it has become too popular and overdone.

SnabbKassa

That got me as well. There are so many intelligent references both to other zombie films ("we're coming to get you, Barbara" is forever my favorite) and also to future developments of the film itself ("why don't you go live in the shed", "next time I see him, he's dead" etc). It's superbly crafted and they did seem to be enjoying it so the end review is honestly confusing to me, both on my first viewing and re-watching it today. Oh well.

China Andronicus

I completely understand horror and gore isn’t Cassie’s thing (especially Carly). But I appreciate that they Finally watched it. This is one of my favorites. Alamo Drafthouse, which is my local movie theater had a screening of it not too long ago and I was definitely there for that one. I would highly recommend putting Hot Fuzz on your must watch list. Carly would enjoy it as well. I do suggest you put the subtitles on for that one. Just so you can understand the British humor better. Otherwise I enjoyed watching along with you guys. Always fun seeing your scared reactions.

Joe M

Mainly I was making a BATMAN 89 joke though about their reaction 🤣

Jason Dolan

I should clarify it is a guy's movie in the sense that it focuses on these two guys not that only guys will enjoy it, or only men. Anyone who is a fan of horror would love this. But like my dad hates this stuff. So not to separate by gender. But you have to be a fan of this genre or be like a guy in his 20s, 30s, etc. Or a girl who loves all things horror. But this is definitely not a gender specific movie just like I can enjoy "chick flicks" any woman can enjoy a movie made for guys.

Jason Dolan

Highly disagree. I also dont think it was marketed more towards men. This is one of my fav movies EVER! I DO agree with warcrimes and say that… zombie movie fans will obviously enjoy this movie more than than non-zombie fans. I just so happen to LOVE a good zombie. BUT i also ❤️ british comedy!

Audrey

HOT FUZZ also has a surprising amount of gore.

Stick Figure Studios

Hot fuzz is a def must. Its humor outweighs any "paranoia factor".

Jaccob Cortes

yes exactly.. Hot Fuzz is amazing!

24fps_

Yup as others have said, the next two in the Cornetto trilogy are just as funny but don’t have the gore and squishy intestines. Hot Fuzz is a great parody of American buddy cop movies made even more ridiculous by setting it in the sleepiest and most unassuming village in the English countryside.

Ria Grix

You and Carly should definitely watch Hot Fuzz next. I think it's a more well-rounded and satisfying film, and I still think it's Edgar Wright's best.

Henry Graham

In fairness, this is the one trilogy I know of that literally flip genres and is only loosely connected by actor reuse and ice cream wrappers, whereas something like John Wick is one story taking place over the course of about a week or two, or LOtR which was what? 14 months in Middle-Earth not counting flashbacks and when you boil it down is basically more of the same in both cases..

Wirenfeldt Jr

And to be clear, I'm not saying no women will like this movie. Obviously a lot of women I know are massive horror fans, and that's their favorite genre, however, Cassie and Carly are not that - they are Rom Com girls. And that's great! But I think that Rom Com girls and Horror Girls don't have a lot of crossover. Most of the Horror Girls I know don't watch Grey's Anatomy and Hart of Dixie, they watch Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, haha.

Jason Dolan

Gender obviously has a lot to do with it. This is a movie about a 20-something guy who needs to "sort his life out" in terms of his relationships and his career. Hollywood executives think obsessively about gender in terms of who buys movie tickets and how to market to them. This is a product and it was designed to appeal to a particular demographic.

Carol_White

Now you need to watch Hot Fuzz. The best of the trilogy.

Yaisu

This is my ex-GF's favorite movie. You have to be a zombie fan to fully appreciate it. Gender has nothing to do with it.

warcrimes

I really appreciated Cassie's almost post credit analysis that this is a guy's movie. I think a guy might have that same reaction to some of their favorite movies - this is a girl's movie. And that's okay because not all movies have to be for everyone. And I'm saying this to declare BATMAN 89 is a guy's movie and that's why Cassie and Carly didn't get that either. Ahahaha.

Jason Dolan

Well that was a confusing reaction… they both seemed entertained by it as they were watching it. Laughing in the right spots. Even enthralled at times, like the Reservoir Dogs standoff near the end.. But then proceeded to give it, what I felt, was a negative review. I’m bothered that Cassie said it was a film for “teenage boys”.. I would consider this a pretty smart comedy. A lot of people are recommending they finish the trilogy, and I would totally watch those reactions, but I’d be more interested in reactions to some of Edgar Wrights other films, like Scott Pilgrim vs the World or Baby Driver.

Jeff Milcheck

As I think she would have as well but she will watch it when she wants to :)

GamerGal8684

I am shocked to learn that Cassie hasn’t seen, “He’s just not that in to you.” (I know, NOT Scary; but it is a great holiday movie and the holidays are right next to Halloween.)

Uncle Phoenix

My favorite zombie film by far! And one of my fave horror films in general.

Jeff Milcheck

Carly would have liked Young Frankenstein better

Isaac Reed

Not a bad idea there Tyler. Think I'll add that one to the app.

Jake McNulty

Definitely some gore but not nearly as much as this film. Nothing like David being ripped apart.

China Andronicus

I do think you will enjoy Hot Fuzz more, as the tropes of action movies are probably familiar to people who haven't seen any in a way that horror movie tropes may not be, an d of course unlike horror movies, you both have seen some action movies on the channel (although, warning, it is also surprisingly gory at times). That said, I think the Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright/Nick Frost project perfect for a YouTube reaction channel, which no one that I know of has done so far, would be the TV show they did before this, which is called "Spaced." Not only will those jokes probably be a little more your speed, you'll also get all the pop culture references packed into the show (not to mention, it has a little "will-they-or-won't-they" romantic tension. The appearances of Jessica Hynes as Yvonne in this movie is a tribute to "Spaced," as she co-starred and co-wrote the show with Pegg.

Tyler Foster

Agree. Hot Fuzz is better. SotD is still good, though.

Brent Petty

It’s a yes for me on Hot Fuzz and The Worlds End even with her not really like this one. The humor in these movies is the kind of humor you have to pay attention since it’s referenced throughout the movie. I actually saw Shaun of the Dead in theaters. My first actual horror type of movie. I was pretty nervous going in, but liked it overall then. I like it more so now.

James1035

I would highly recommend watching the film that followed this one, same actors and director, 'Hot Fuzz'. Totally different story and characters but still a comedy, a parody of cop films, and in my opinion it's even funnier than this one.

China Andronicus

I'm not sure what Cassie was expecting, but I'm pretty sure she did not expect this from the movie. Although I think unlike Carly, she did enjoy parts of it at least. 😄 I think I've seen this movie the first time just before Hot Fuzz came out. We won some tickets to that and we watched Shaun with my flatmates before going. I clearly remember though not liking it very much the first time and the same goes to Hot Fuzz. I'm not even sure how I would classify the humor in the so called 'Cornetto trilogy'. Maybe slightly absurd, satirical parody? Not to mention Edgar Wright certainly has a unique directing and visual style which takes some getting use to. Revisiting both movies a few years later I kind of started liking Shaun, despite not really into horror movies. And I just LOVE Hot Fuzz, definitely my favorite of the three. I hope you are going to react to it one day. It is definitely more mainstream being a buddy cop, murder mystery movie (fair warning to Carly, this also has some but less gory visuals). But I would highly suggest watching some movies in this genre to get familiar with the tropes before a reaction. Thinking of Lethal Weapon series, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Bad Boys, etc. But most importantly Point Break (1991), because it will spoil things in that one. As for comedies I think the best reaction is just seeing you having fun. We just need to find the right ones for that, because it seems the last few (Spaceballs, Vacation, Men in Tights) were not really hitting that target. 😄 My hunch is that movies like A Fish Called Wanda, Coming to America, Overboard, The Man Who Knew Too Little, etc. would be having a better chance.

Gábor Árki

a true horror comedy is the 1985 cult classic THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD....not too scary but great fun to watch

Ewanbhoy Martin

Don’t have Carly over when you watch 28 Days Later, if she could barely handle this one she’ll run out of the room watching that one, lol

Trembling Colors

Heh, never underestimate the PIB patrons’ inability to deviate… Oh, didn’t like this one? Watch the next two! I also loved seeing the I’m Insulted You Didn’t Like It and You Didn’t Watch It The Right Way tropes rear their heads in the same post above. You guys…😉❤️

Jason Chirevas

There is a part where Carly looks just delirious from brain overload - legit nightmare fuel being introduced to her mind

Jason Dolan

Carly, you have a great laugh. 🙂. And as others have said, the next two movies in the Cornetto trilogy (Hot Fuzz and The World’s End) are great and not horror films so hopefully you’ll both continue in the series and like them more.

Ian Forbes

I watched along last night, I definitely thought Cassie enjoyed it. But I think the last 10-15 minutes with the step up in gore put them off, they weren't so hot on it during the outro. But reading the short blurp on the post, seems she liked it more thinking back on it. They certainly laughed a lot, which is why I don't get some of the comments here.

Jay

I was looking forward to watching this reaction later today but I’m gathering, from the reading some of the comments, they didn’t like it much…. Disappointing. :-(

Jeff Milcheck

I occasionally have to set VLC to 96% playback speed for the movie, then it syncs just fine.

Mike Lemon

It’s one of those movies that is just exactly as it should be. Choice of music, editing, cast, script, all just perfect.

Ria Grix

You liked Trollhunter as well. Not so old movie thou. Btw I know you are from Spain, I know a guy from Pamplona who loves Show me love so much, so he went to Trollhättan in Sweden. Just to check out the locations from the movie. 😁😁 Pls give both a request 😁😁

Björn Karlsson

It was definitely you. This movies a classic.

Jeff Milcheck

Agreed, my husband did not enjoy this film upon first seeing it but watching through it again here he was very amused

Nicole

Saw this in the movies with a bunch of friends. It was such a fun experience. I’m not into horror or gore myself but this just makes me laugh. Husband says you should watch Tremors. Old enough to be considered pretty cheesy but still scary enough.

Nicole

Was it me, or was it shite. I found this movie annoying. Didn't age well. This is why I voted for The Burbs'

John Cranberry

To be fair, she keeps getting recommended these parody films for things she hasn't seen or been into. Shaun of the Dead is brilliant if you've already seen all of the zombie movie classics it's parodying because most of the jokes are subtle especially in the early parts of it. How is she supposed to find those jokes funny if she doesn't know what they're making fun of? Also we already know that she's sensitive to blood and gore, so when its overused the way it is in this movie for laughs that's not gonna work either. I dunno just feels like a bad reccomendation to me.

KTVindicare

Definitely still gotta watch Hot Fuzz- absolutely must watch

LMrcs

Disappointing reaction but I guess British humor isn't for everyone.

warcrimes

Does anyone else have problems with some movies going out of sync very quickly? I can sometimes get the movie and reaction to sync up perfectly, but on the rare occasion, after a few minutes, the reaction lags further behind.

Brian McGovern

HOT FUZZ is definitely the best of the 3, a great action movie and an amazing comedy. It is also somehow more violent and more wholesome than you would expect.

Robert Haynes

It amused me how during the reaction you were shouting "It's a comedy! We're having fun!" as if you were trying to convince yourself just as much as Carly. Not that you asked me, but I could have told you that this movie wasn't really for her. :-) Yes, it is a comedy, but it's a comedy in the same way that AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON is a comedy (it is hilarious and doesn't take itself too seriously, but it also has some legit scares and is very, very bloody). Not in the same way that, say, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a comedy. It's more ironic than straight up silly. I think it's interesting that afterwards neither of you had much to say as it was a movie that just sort of "happened" to you. Perhaps you would have had a more satisfactory viewing experience if you'd seen more zombie movies and were more familiar with the tropes and story beats that this movie is sort of taking the piss out of. Maybe not. I don't know. You're going to hear a lot of talk about the "Cornetto" trilogy and it is a thing, but I personally think a bit too much is made out of it. It's really just three otherwise unconnected movies made by the same group of people (director Edgar wright and actors / co-writers Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) with each film affectionately satirizing a different genre. SHAUN OF THE DEAD does zombie movies and the next one HOT FUZZ (for my money, the best of the three) lampoons action movies... and yet in spite of the spoofing going on, the filmmakers still clearly had the ambitions of fashioning a good example of the very kind of movie they're sending up. Like SHAUN, HOT FUZZ is a comedy, but it's also a surprisingly good action flick. I actually think that's one you will enjoy a lot more.

Stick Figure Studios

This movie had such terrific writing. Ed's line "We're coming to get you Barbara" to Shaun's mom is a great homage to the original Night of the Living Dead. All of the news cuts and foreshadowing throughout make this a perennial must watch. I know it wasn't necessarily for you but wanted to say thanks for reviewing this great film!

Dave B

I'm glad you watched it even if it's not up your sense of humour or a bit gruesome in spots for those a bit squeamish. Based on Cassie's comments above, I get the feeling she maybe thought it was better on reflection than first moments after viewing. Definitely not Carly's cup of tea. British comedy is its own unique voice and moves quite quickly with lots of subtlety and innuendo. Not always easy to catch on first watch. For those that have rewatched it over the years I find myself catching lines that I had forgotten about and jokes that have callbacks later in the movie. Also the only snack that you ladies should have had with this movie is a Cornetto. (Or drumstick in Canadian)

Canadianant

Such an intricate movie. Even the tiniest details foreshadow things that happen later, so it bears rewatching. It gives away the entire movie.

Ben Livingstone

Also, Carly is stronger than she thinks. Maybe it's the power of the black nail polish!

Jason Fulbright

Cassie WINKED! 1:38:09 "I mean, it was weird (wink) in every way." Now it might have been unintentional or allergy related, but it looks like a wink to me.

Jason Fulbright

In my ranking of favorite horror movies of all time there would be The Exorcist (1973), The Changeling (1980), The entity (1982), Robert Wise's The Haunting (1963) and The Innocents (1961). It would be great if one of these movies were chosen in this October of terror. Of the last few years surprised me It Follows (2014) and Darkness Fall (2003) based in sightly different ideas.

Pepe M

The first one she would need to stay away from. The second one I think she could deal fine with. But the first one no. There is being scared and enjoying the film then there is just...not enjoying it because of what it is.

GamerGal8684

I think Evil Dead would be a great step up from Elm Street.

John Cranberry

Tremors and Fright Night. Great reaction and fun treat. The kind of humor you laugh about for days after. The scene where they are getting coached on how to be a zombie. Priceless.

Grinznmore

Wasn't expecting this until next week so it was a nice surprise. It's much more a love letter to the zombie/horror genre than a spoof of it. Watching along, I had the impression yous were enjoying it, at least until David got eaten 😂 (props for not looking away there, Cassie). But that's probably down to me wanting yous to like it. I think it's the best horror comedy ever made and I'll never get tired of watching it. Makes me laugh every time:)

Jay

I get the trepidation about watching a comedy in a public forum. The possible concern about whether you are going to laugh at all and having people think you may not like the movie. Comedy is very subjective. If you are concerned about your actual laugh, do not be. I am probably like a lot of other people here and actually love both your laughs.

Brian McGovern

Not sure why, every time a movie doesn’t appeal to Cassie and Carly, they automatically default to “appeals to/written by teenage boys.” Isn’t it possible that other people like movies quite different to the ones they enjoy? I and many others abhor conventional romantic comedies. But that doesn’t mean that they are the sole provence of teenage girls - just that there are people out there that have different tastes than me. I watched Shaun of the Dead when it first came out in theaters at which time I was in my thirties. I enjoyed it for what it is: a joyous, loving homage to so many wonderful horror movies of the 70s and 80s (Romero’s original Dead trilogy, Living Dead At Manchester Morgue, Lucio Fulci’s Zombie and Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series are particularly referred to throughout Shaun). In no way does the movie make fun of those other films - it simply takes what already exists, gives it a little twist and became it’s own, wonderful thing. Maybe, in the future, the ladies should consider that tastes in films run the gamut and that, just because something doesn’t appeal to their sensibilities, that doesn’t make it juvenile. Finally, for anyone that didn’t know, Simon Pegg (Shaun), Nick Frost (Ed) and Edgar Wright (the director) are all good friends and worked together previously on the fantastic tv series Spaced. Pegg and Wright also co-wrote the script for Shaun.

Just Plain Bob

Hot Fuzz is my favorite the trilogy but this one is a close second.

Alex Gorell

The movies require so much focus though to get the callbacks and jokes.

aarswft

I'm throwing my hat into the race. Zombie film, 28 Days Later. Slasher, Scream. Cassie will hate me forever suggestion, The Ring

Blaze118

Snack talk couldn't have happened at a worse time lol. But it's all good. Part of the experience.

aarswft

Except, you know, they didn't like it.

Carol_White

She'd never survive RE-ANIMATOR (or FROM BEYOND, for that matter)

Matt Rose

So no 28 days later then. Got it. Such a fun zombie movie except he spells his name wrong

Sean Stuart

I Cannot see you watching Evil Dead after seeing you're reaction to Shaun of the Dead but it would be fun nonetheless even if these films may not be your thing. Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness have so many iconic quotes, remember a game called Blood from the 1990s that had so many Evil Dead quotes along with other pop culture lines as well. But at the end of the day I'm happy with whatever you watch it's a blast seeing you're reactions to any film or show. Personal October Recommendations: The Evil Dead Evil Dead 2 Army of Darkness Darkman Gremlins (Can see you liking the most out of all of these) - More Christmas-y. Gremlins 2 (Can see you liking the most out of all of these) - More Christmas-y. They Live Fright Night Re-Animator Edit: I'm very much an 1980s fan lol

Isaac

Classic ZomRomCom.

Togre

Hot fuzz should be next 😂

iCZero

Lol at last you watched it, I was wondering what your reaction would be 😂

iCZero

Some classmates and I re-enacted the throwing records bit for a grade in drama class in high school lol I always get nostalgic in that scene.

Drew

Dogs CAN look up

Kevin Hooper

Gremlins is more Christmas-y.

Mike Lemon

'David? Kill the Queen!'

Matt Rose

Has Gremlins been mentioned or watched for a not too scary Halloween movie

Andrew Hogan

You've got red on you . . . If you liked this "Hot Fuzz" is everything.

Dryfesands

HOT FUZZ is my personal favorite of the trilogy.

Matt Rose

Wasn’t expecting this one until the weekend. So a very pleasant surprise! We all know Cassie is becoming a scary movie veteran. Wonder how Carly fared?! 😀 Looking forward to watching this one tonight! Have a great weekend everyone!

Robert da Spruce

This is why I’m happy you got to watch this movie. It does a good job of mixing the scary elements with some humor sprinkled in.

James1035

🤷‍♀️

Cassie

'What...did we...just watch???' Awesome

Matt Rose

So many quotable lines in this movie! Can’t wait to watch this reaction soon! (You’ve got red on you.)

Alex Villarreal

Excellent! You ladies have now began your journey into the Cornetto trilogy. Next up "Hot Fuzz"! Can't wait til you get to "World's End"!

Jake McNulty

Waiting anxiously for Mission Impossible 6! I'd never watched the franchise until you started it and I'm completely hooked. Can't wait for Fallout!

Renato Gonçalves

One of the movies I try and watch each October! Funny movie and I agree with some other comments about seeing Hot Fuzz! More a murder mystery than scary but a couple jumps if I remember right.

Manuel Eckroad

Are we seeing Scream this month? Lol
