The Bodyguard (1992) - Full Reaction

Oh wow I, need to immediately read a Whitney Houston biography. I knew very little about her but she was stunning in this movie. Her voice is INCREDIBLE!! It was a great chicky-flicky suspense film and I loved the 90's feel! It was maybe just a titch too long and frank farmer could have used a better haircut, but I still loved it!

The Bodyguard (1992) - Full Reaction

Comments

You've got to watch No Way Out, with Costner

Butt Head

Which version is this? It doesn't line up with the EU iTunes one at all.

AdrianF

I cry every time I watch this just because of her presence and her talent and voice. And she's just gone. Every time it gets me.

Amy Silknitter

If one brings up ronin then the movie Ronin must be discussed? I think it is in a subparagraph of the rules. :-)

Vryce

Cassie, Sorry to burst your dream of a happy ending. But the song is a hint that this story has a bittersweet ending. Frank is a wandering Ronin. Just like Sanjuro Kuwabatake is in the Arthouse movie Frank seen 62 times, "Yojimbo" (Bodyguard) is hired as a bodyguard by two waring Gangsters terrorizing a town. Ronin have no Lord or Master. They are like wandering Judges protecting anyone with a claim. Ronin never grow roots. So the ending is just as sad as it was, Sorry to be the bummer.

Powers209

I was moved more when Dolly Parton sang this song to Burt Reynolds in The Best Little Whore House in Texas, Still a great movie, Loved watching it with Cassie.

Powers209

I think I remember reading that Kevin Costner actually brought the Dolly Parton song, I Will Always Love You, either to Whitney Houston or to the composer to use in the movie. Dolly is a masterful songwriter after all. Whitney, with some help, arranged this version of the song that became one of the best sellers of all time (and made Dolly even more rich with royalties).

Damon

He's wonderful in The Good Doctor as well.

Damon

There's only thing I want to you about Cassie. The song I Will Always Love You is originally from Dolly Parton. This is not Whitney's song.

Reece Coventree

That was such a great reaction video. I am actually kind of sad that we aren’t going to be able to see the Cassie AND Carly reaction to it. (Because that would be awesome.) Anyways, IMO, I would love to see a reaction to Lawrence Kasden’s western Silverado, with a much younger Kevin Costner. (Not as light as Maverick, but certainly not as dark as Unforgiven.)

Uncle Phoenix

most celebrities? your research?

TT

Noooooo! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Philip Alan

Talk about unpopular opinions I LOVE O.J. ALL DAY 😄 I can understand you only like it with breakfast but before 9am was it? After that it's gross 🤯 I'd like to hear what your sister has to say. 😉

Sam R.

According to Wikipedia, they agree not to be together because it just wouldn’t work out, when she jumps off the plane, it’s just one final kiss lol Pretty crazy, I also read that apparently a sequel was going to be made. Kevin Costner contacted and asked Princess Diana to be in it, as they had been long time friends. She agreed. But unfortunately the script had been finished the day before her death, after her passing, it was scrapped. And now there is a remake in the works lol

@David Crabtree - ...Agree with your appreciation for Richard Schiff as one of the great Stoic, yet ever dispensing clever sarcasm characters of all-time; Toby Ziegler. And, The West Wing, almost unquestionably the greatest 'written' TV series of all-time, is MY favorite show too!

Terry Yelmene

I love that you acknowledged Toby from The West Wing! Favorite Show of all time!

David Crabtree

@David Freese - About your Avengers theme comment - I was so sad when Cassie took note of Alan in the credits as a negative experience. For me, Williams and Zimmer have greater bodies of classic movie scores that stand the test of time, BUT Alan Silvestri is just as special. IMHO, the most beautiful movie score of all time is for Robert Zemeckis' 1997 classic; 'Contact.' I hope Cassie sees that movie; a personal favorite of mine, starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It's a great story that deepens appreciation for what it means to be human. And more than that, I hope Cassie can experience the beauty and magesty of that film score, which I think has few, if any equals.

Terry Yelmene

I never got the ending was it one big goodbye kiss or are they together. Based on the comments when they are dancing at the bar it is a goodbye song . She sang the song because she will always love him but they can’t be together. But maybe im wrong. Message in the bottle is good if you like Nicholas Spark movies. But I really like for the Love of the Game.

Sean Stuart

I enjoyed this watch along, I haven't seen this movie in decades.

Tonio

I don’t like to be long winded on negativity here, so I will say I agree with your assessment of the Bodyguard. Not my favorite. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone recommend Revenge (1990). It’s a darker tale, but also a great Kevin Costner Romance. Tarantino is a big fan of it, for what that’s worth. Edit***. Sorry, didn’t mean You long winded negatively. I enjoy your comments as do many others I’m sure. I’ve spun a few yarn my self. I meant Myself being negative long windedly. Does that make sense?

Larry Darrell

THE BODYGUARD was one of those movies like DIRTY DANCING and GHOST, that I, as an adolescent boy, just had no interest in whatsoever when it came out and the fact that it was critically panned but obscenely successful with audiences did not entice me any further. The bodyguard angle was fine but I couldn't have cared less about the love story (I'm, thankfully, more mature now when it comes to love stories). However, like those other two films, when I did finally see it years later, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Not "good" necessarily but entertaining enough. It was, as I suspected, pure kitsch: an artless heavy-handed melodrama (slathered in that slick, glossy 1990s aesthetic with its smoky atmosphere and overuse of close-ups) elevated by the chemistry of its two leads. Poorly paced with scenes that drag on way too long, some cringe-worthy dialogue, a plot that's a bit of a cheat and a villain whose identity is absurdly easy to guess, it's a compulsively watchable mess. I've seen it twice now and I think I'm probably good on it now indefinitely. I was amused, though, that it takes place in a world where Robert Wuhl is a viable Oscar host. :-) I was confident, however, that you would enjoy it. It's interesting that you bring up IN THE LINE OF FIRE because it occurred to me watching this again that both protagonists are named Frank and in Lawrence Kasdan's original script for THE BODYGUARD written years earlier for Steve McQueen -- which might explain Costner's haircut -- it was the Kennedy assassination Frank failed to prevent, so there are definitely surface similarities, but comparing them is like a case study in masterful storytelling vs storytelling that is barely adequate. Wolfgang Peterson's film is a far more intelligent, elegantly crafted thriller. It's like the fine cuisine of this sub-genre. BODYGUARD is like the happy meal version. Nowadays the movie functions much better as a time capsule of the meteoric rise in stardom of the late great Whitney Huston with her magnetic onscreen presence and glorious voice. It's a sad story and she really did leave us too soon... but we will always love her.

Stick Figure Studios

He has also done every single Robert Zemeckis movie (BACK TO THE FUTURE, FORREST GUMP, etc), THE ABYSS, READY PLAYER ONE and a whole host of other films.

Stick Figure Studios

Alan Salvestre ( sorry for spelling) was the composer for this as well as the Avengers movies. He's the creator of the Avengers theme song.

David Freese

Loved that you said “West Wing” for Richard Schiff and “what movie is that?” Becoming a true TV and movie buff! But the hybrid truck/car line for the El Camino had me cracking up! Everyone send her your old Hot Rod magazines. 🤣

Robert Snyder

Great reaction Cassie! I enjoyed that! You had everything correct. The blond guy at the Carwash wrote the letters. That’s why the Secret Service said they found industrial detergent residue on the letters. The kind of detergent they use at carwash’s. Then Nikki, after seeing the letters, gave her that extra push over the ledge to hire Portman. I really enjoy how you and Carly always add a epilogue at the end on how the story continued after the credits role. I’m guessing you guys have been doing that since you were kids. 😀 Not the biggest horror movie fan, so this month will be a test for me as well. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Robert da Spruce

Great move but not a chick flick. Would classify it as a "tear jerker"

Scott O

Love A Perfect World.

Scott O

I knew she was going to like this one. It had the romance, suspense, action, and the ambiguous ending to have Cassie perfect her screenwriter skills by writing her own ending.

Anthony Oberhauser

This was originally written to be made with Steve McQueen and Diana Ross in the 70's. That could've been a hell of a movie.

Matthew Lange

yea, would love to see a reaction to that. Great pic!

Erik Daniel

Oh, I got chills at the scene in the car when they arrive at the Oscars and she said something like “When it’s your time, it’s your time” I just kept thinking that she died the night before the Grammys that she was supposed to attend. So sad! I grew up listening to Whitney and just watched Kevin’s eulogy and it was beautifully heartbreaking. I’d forgotten that it was KC who wanted her to play that part. Cassie, there are a few Whitney documentaries on Amazon that you can watch to learn more about her.

Tara

Taking me back again to a classic I haven't seen in a long time. Good movie. Good blast from the past. Thanks for reintroducing me to another movie from my past. Great reaction. I figured you would like it. Another blast from the past you would like is Tequila Sunrise. Mel Gibson & Michelle Pfeiffer. Action and romance.

Rick Williams

Did I hear " '90s chick flicks"? There is- City of Angels (1998)...just sayin'. Also, in the tradition of suggesting movies with a connection to the one just watched- the guy that played Minella was one of the main characters in Indictment- The McMartin Trial (1995) [a true court story] nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Mike Lemon

Ohh if she is doing Grumpy Old Men, gotta do the sequel too. Both are great fun :)

GamerGal8684

Movies that popped in my head watching this: Six Days Seven Nights Grumpy Old Men Cliffhanger Flight

Andrew Hogan

I had a blast watching this reaction. Growing up, watching the movies from the 80’s and 90’s it’s always a fun little trip down memory lane watching these. It’s always fun to see Cassie coke up with her own endings and she basically nailed the ending halfway through.

Andrew Hogan

Lol, I knew she would get a lot of crap for that comment .....it is suprising.

Seymor Butz

El Camino is the car.....very popular. This is a great month to watch Frequency as the pick of the month. It has the right amount of scary suspense, is same time of year and coincides with baseball season. I highly recomend.

Seymor Butz

Yes I agree Cassie you must go to YouTube and watch Kevin’s emotional eulogy to Whitney at her funeral. He loved her dearly and he could barely keep i together doing that. I miss her

brooke atkins

a canadiam doesmt know who whitney houston is. lol. a movie is in the making about her life. something you should keep an eye out for. it was an interesting life with a tragic ending.

Jimmy Reyes

YouTube copyright going to have a field day with all the music in this one!

Simon Haynes

Yeah, I can't get it out of my head now!

MikeLL

A bit educational as well as entertaining.

Stick Figure Studios

AND Iiiiiiiiiii-eee-iiiiiiiiiiiiii-eee-iiiiiiiiiiii wwwwilll always love youuuuuuuu-ooo-oooooo..........

Scott Macaulay

Awesome I love this movie.

Michael Lynch

The movie they go see is Yojimbo directed by Akira Kurosawa (same guy who made Seven Samurai). Fantastic movie! Hope we get to see you react to it someday

Neill Shaughness

Nice! 👍 Looking forward to watching your reaction tonight!

Robert da Spruce

I think my favorite thing is when the movie ends and you talk yourself through what happens next. I love it.

Walter

Did you know that Whitney Houston’s debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston, had four No. 1 singles on it? Did you know that, Shawn? It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks. But ‘The Greatest Love of All’ is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation and dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since, Shawn, it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message. Crucial, really. And it’s beautifully stated on the album. If you know, you know;)

Jay

Regarding the haircut: in general, people who work in a field where hand to hand combat is possible (bodyguard, security, bouncer, similar) have very short hair because you don't want your opponent to be able to grab your hair and move your head. It's functionally appropriate.

Matt Rose

EVERYTHING a GREAT Cassie reaction is... the perfectly ultra positive anticipation pre-react monologue.... the smiles... the head in hands... the jump scare at the explosions... the wee bit of revealing self-awareness at (Frank's father paraphrased) Frank always faces his fears which Cassie reveals: "The opposite of me." One new twist - a sinking below the camera frame in embarassement... The jump for joy when it works out (Frank lives)... and of course, the patented, Cassie invented and verbalized happily ever after epilogue... This one is yet another PiB reaction masterpiece. But, BUT, BUT!!! this reaction experience CANNOT be Complete For Cassie WITHOUT Her Watching The True Friendship Story - Kevin's Eulegy for Whitney - Cassie Please Watch This! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BuA2sIhP1A

Terry Yelmene

Am I the only one who is shocked by the revelation that Cassie has no idea what an El Camino is?

Christopher Smith

Seconded! One of the only good Costner performances in a non sports movie or western. Stay away from accents, Kev, stay away.

VivendoBem

Cassie "No! No goodbye! Get off the plane!" 🤣 Great Reaction. This brought back so many memories. I was barely in my 20's and fell in love with Whitney.

John Cranberry

Just like most celebrities she fell victim to drug dependency and if you have ever been there or know someone who has, you have to keep upping the dos to get the euphoria feeling and if you are not schooled in that field you eventually O.D.

Jayson Phillips

Cassie, as part of your research on Whitney’s bio, be sure to look up Kevin Costner’s speech at her funeral.

Michael McErlain

This came out when I was in 2nd grade. I still remember the commercials. Whitney was everywhere at the time....as was the song. I remember when some kid in the lunch room bragged that he saw the movie. No one believed him. "It's rated R!!!" someone said. "You're a liar!" The debate continued till when we got back to the classroom and the teacher shut it down. "No one saw The Bodyguard...not even me! And I like Kevin Costner. Now focus!!!" :)

Caomhan84

I think Kevin”s best role was in A Perfect World with Clint Eastwood and Laura Dern. So good playing against type.

Brian McGovern

Yes her voice is incredible! When I hear her sing the hair on my neck stands up, and I get goosebumps. Such a tragic loss. Go on YouTube and find her singing the National Anthem at the Olympics. EPIC! No one sang it like her!!

Steven Ashford

Cassie you should definitely check out 'No Way Out.'

mattosh79

Best performance of the Star-Spangled Banner ever. Very inspirational!!

Shawn Kildal

Cassie, you should definitely check out Kevin Costner's speech at Whitney's funeral. Very moving. She passed away so young at 48. I couldn't get enough of her first album with the songs "The Greatest Love of All", "How will I know", "Saving All My Love", "All at Once", and "You Give Good Love" was my personal favorite of hers. I know she did a few other movies like Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife with Denzel Washington.

Shawn Kildal

If you want another great Costner movie, I can only recommend "Thirteen Days".

Konstantin Knopp

I think 9 to 5 would be a great fun sister watch

GamerGal8684

I remember seeing this in the theater front row center. While my neck paid for it, I never would have changed a thing. Kevin Costner was great in this. Their chemistry was great in this one. So glad you chose this one. Gonna be singing the soundtrack so much even if it would be horribly off key lol.

GamerGal8684

The black and white movie they're showing is Yojimbo, the film that introduced me to Japanese cinema and the inimitable Kurosawa!

Ben Livingstone

Did you know Dolly Parton wrote and originally performed the song? She has said many times Whitney's version is the best. So as one degree of separation, you should watch 9 to 5 as a really good early 80's comedy.

Jason Fulbright

Not to bring ya down, but if you’re gonna dive into Whitney’s biography, be aware it’s not a fun story… pretty sad really.

Jeff Milcheck

I enjoyed this movie when it first came out, but ever since Whitney Houston’s passing I find that can’t watch it. You’re correct - she was gone too early - but unfortunately in reality she married a man who is nothing like Frank Farmer. Her singing voice - which seemed effortless, right? - had such power and range. Check out her singing our national anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” for Super Bowl XXV (‘91) on YouTube. Many still agree it is the best that has ever been performed at a live event.

Ike

Love this but gonna have to wait until morning

Katie Jackson

She played the fairy godmother in a Cinderella movie musical…and she also played in a Christmas movie called A Preachers Wife with Denzel Washington. She is an ICON

David Martin

Kinda like Harrison Ford's haircut in presumed innocent, guess that was a thing for older leading men in the 90's

Allen Bond

AND I........ can't wait to watch this later, a bit of a guilty pleasure. 🤣

Daryl

Never seen this and not sure if I will. We will see.

Brian McGovern

I can't say that surprised me. :)
