Meet Joe Black (1998) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Sorry for the schedule switch, I was supposed to have this up yesterday, but I'm posting now which means Men In Tights tomorrow. This was the PPOTM (popcorn pick of the month)! It was definitely not what we were expecting. I was sooo off with what I thought this was about, as you'll see in the intro haha.. It had this weird unnerving feel to it, but in the end it all came together. It actually reminded me of Sabrina mixed with Starman for some reason. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Meet Joe Black (1998) - Full Reaction

Every time I rewatch this movie I can't help but picture Bill's body lying on the floor just over the little bridge. It must be there!

Luke Godfrey

im sorry but im new here, i will like to ask why is the screen blurry

Ιζαμπελα Μουρατιδου

Oh, since you're such a Robert Redford fan, I suggest watching the Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark." He also played Death and was VERY young.

Hi Cassie. I just watched a movie last night called “The World’s Fastest Indian” starring Anthony Hopkins. You seemed to like Anthony in this movie and in Legends of the Fall. And the World’s Fastest Indian has the same sort of vibe. It’s based on a true story about a New Zealander who’s lifelong dream is to come the U.S. to race his motorcycle near your neck of the woods at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Not sure if this film has enough widespread appeal for your channel. But I think it’s very charming and inspirational. And I think you’d enjoy it. Maybe watch it on your own time if you have a couple free hours. Anyways, just a suggestion. Have a great day!

I still love my wife.... the smell of her hair, the smile on her face... Brad still loves Angelina. He always will. He cannot love another. This movie changes a person. I ask both of you to watch it again in a few months. and yes, not only is Brad easy on the eyes, Claire Forlani ( Susan) is beautiful. The final scene is one of my favorites. The hospital scene with the Jamaican lady is another. But just to level the playing field, this is Sir Anthony Hopkins and Silence of the Lambs...????? Yes, he is an amazing actor.

Matt Mabry

The guerilla movie you are thinking about is Mighty Joe Young. Came out around the same time.

JohnB

a reunion for Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins after Legends of the Fall, which is already on the channel

I Loved this Movie. Can't believe I never watched it until now. Thank You, Cassie. Also, never knew it was a remake of Death Takes a Holiday (1934), a film I have yet to watch but am aware of. This makes much sense, because while watching it, I had this old-fashioned story feeling. I was thinking this was a movie that could have been made in the 30s & 40s. The word Capraesque came to mind during it: (real word, look it up) Meaning related to or in the style of Frank Capra films. Four films entered in and out of my mind while watching, two of them Capra's. You Can't Take it With You (1938) On Borrowed Time (1939) Meet John Doe (1941) Being There (1979)

Larry Darrell

In the end Mr Black figured out what real love is. It's putting the needs of the one you love above your own. Wonderful reaction as always.

softshoes

I never thought this film would be this good nor make me think so much about love, death, letting go...how sad it would be to be an immortal being, entity such as death. Imagine..even the sacrifice of him letting Susan go..and to go back to a lonely existance. With nice pictures but still. Although when you think about it, Susans existance is but a blink of our eyes to someone like Death. So really Susan will die and could see Joe Black again in but a heartbeat. And poor Susan, she will meet the real diner guy and build a life with him, but in the back of her mind she will still know she once loved Joe and will meet him again.

Anthony Perez

Hi Cassie, you might want to watch the film this is based on, Death Takes a Holiday. It’s a pre code film from 1934. Granted it doesn’t have Brad Pitt or Anthony Hopkins, but it is a stronger film (though I do like this version too).

Tinkerbell

Hey Michael 😃 You seems to like swedish films? Have you seen "Tomten är far till alla barnen" aka "In bed with Santa"? It's a black comedy from 1999 about Christmas. Alexandra Dahlström from SML/FÅ has small role in it. It's hilarious 😅😅😅 but I guess its "to swedish" for Cassie and maybe for you as well 😁😁😊

Björn Karlsson

"But you're not... king!" -Anthony Hopkins as Odin

Mannygogou

I've heard stories of audiences laughing in the theater at that part. It really does look ludicrous and I think that's where the movie lost a lot of people.

Stick Figure Studios

She has been in a ton of great films over the years but I think her rebuffing Harvey W a couple times probably hurt her career somewhat. She is a great actor and I def agree with you on the Gal Gadot vibes.

Jedi Psy

Haha, I absolutely loved their reaction to Brad Pitt's character getting run over, and then the supernatural scene that followed with Bill talking to Death. And Cassie is just like "I don't think this is about a Gorilla."

Nathan Bishop

I don't know much of Claire Forlani's work besides this movie, but watching this again, she gives me a ton of Gal Gadot vibes (but shorter).

Philip Alan

It was great watching this movie again with you Ladies. Great movie. Great reactions.

Rick Williams

Yup, I definitely enjoyed Brad Pitt getting bounced off those cars too much; and sadly I would have loved seeing him get hurt even more. Ugh…Lol. That dude is annoyingly good looking. His friends must give him so much grief, “Shut the Fetch Up, Brad.”

Uncle Phoenix

your full reaction was amazing, you could see you were both so compeled with the story and yours eyes were glued to the screen ....my only surprise was there were no tears....i have watched this movie over 50 times and i always cry but i am an old romantic lol

Ewanbhoy Martin

Claire Forlani in this movie....swooon

Obie Brown

I love this movie. Thanks for letting me watch it with you. Now we need to get you to watch the other Joe (the one with the volcano ;) )

David Guin

So glad this was the PPOTM, and that Cassie and Carly was so into it. Clearly Martin Brest thought he was making a picture for the ages, and I for one enjoyed the leisurely pace of the story and the way it unfolded, but if he had tightened the script just a little bit and quickened the pace a smudge, I think he absolutely would have had a masterpiece everyone would be raving over today. Flaws aside, I do think this is a terrifically entertaining movie. I never thiink a movie is too slow, it is just entertaining, or not. Claire Florani in this movie looked like she invented the smoldering gaze.

MikeLL

It never occurred to me but Starman is an apt, accurate, and clever comparison to this film, Cassie! Also, I think it's cool that you've seen that one!

Aaron Hawkins

FYI...I think you were mixed up with MIGHTY JOE YOUNG is a 1998 American epic adventure film based on the 1949 film of the same name about a giant mountain gorilla.

Anthony Perez

I'm very upset...there were ZERO gorillas in this movie. Seriously though, this was one of the best reactions I have seen on this channel. Thank you. I knew a little about the movie except for the part where Brad Pitt gets hit by cars..so it was sorta funny to see you twos faces when it happened. And I was floored by the movie. It definitely makes you think about your life..especially since I am older than Hopkins character was in the movie. Thank you for making a great film even more enjoyable. But please no more teasing us with gorillas.

Anthony Perez

Just upgraded my Poptreon membership from the basic tier, a load more stuff I gotta catch up on.

Ria Grix

Don't forget about "Sharknado" :)

Celeste McAllister

Another film with similar themes to this is The Bishop's Wife (1947). It is utterly charming and stars the inimitable Cary Grant, whose films have sadly not survived the early rounds of the classics bracket. This is also a great Christmas movie. I know Cassie and Carly would adore it.

Michael Threapleton

Had a big crush on Claire Forlani when this came out! Looking forward to watching your reaction tonight!

Robert da Spruce

yes, i think you’re right!!!

Cassie

Another good gorilla movie is "Godzilla vs Kong" (2021) but you should probably watch Godzilla (2014) and "Godzilla King of Monsters" first. 😉

Todzilla

And I loved how in the end, Bill was the one who was trying to comfort Death when it was time to leave, when it's always been the other way around. And I'm sure the Gorilla movie you're thinking of Mighty Joe Young.

Nathan Bishop

Ummmmm, for a good gorilla movie, you might want to check out "Mighty Joe Young"....LMAO! Hey, I know you can't be faulted for not knowing every movie out there....but I almost sprayed my coffee all over my living room when you said that about a "gorilla movie" ----- you are priceless!!

Bill Poulter

This is easily in the Top 5 of your reactions for me :D Loved that you didn't know what the movie was going into it, the reaction to the hook was great. And some people think that this movie is too slow :D Oh, and the "Joe" movie you were thinking of was "Mighty Joe Young".

Planner

You two are amazing together! I love watching your genuine discovery of a story! Guessing about what’s going to happen and how! This movie is truly one of a kind! I’m so glad you both liked it!

George Stapp

Misery would be a good one for Carly to watch alongside you. It’s not really scary, it’s not supernatural, but it’s not harmless either. We can’t go too far and watch only soft movies in October. Alternatively, she could just watch MI: Fallout and/or the classics winners and leave you to the scary movies since your threshold is higher than hers.

Shehab Dawoud

I saw this movie over 20 years ago, and I think about it every single time I get a spoonful of peanut butter from the kitchen. My only real gripe with this movie is that I wish they hadn't gone with a goofy "fish out of water" approach with Death. He has been around forever and seen an infinite number of people living their lives on this planet, so he shouldn't be confused by every day things like he is in this movie. And it was weird how he switched between a socially awkward, inarticulate person to a very confident and articulate person.

Nathan Bishop

Yeah, Gigli was definitely an unfortunate cap to the filmography. Though I'm the rare person who considers Meet Joe Black to be my favorite of them. Even rarer still, I saw it a few times in its original theatrical run before it unfortunately whimpered its way out of theaters. Ah well, it's just one of those films where I like it more than others do, which is fine. The fun of movies working differently for different people. This should be followed up with a reaction for The Edge at some point. Anthony Hopkins is great at playing stoic, prosperous characters.

Guy Gordon

So glad you reacted to this one! It's one of my favorites. You're right Cassie, Brad Pitt can be alien-like in his beauty! I also thought Claire Forlani was amazing and lovely as Susan. The look of fear on her face as she realizes Joe is not the person she met in the coffee shop, and she says, "You're someone else". Chilling! The soundtrack by Thomas Newman is wonderful, especially "Whisper Of A Thrill". So beautiful!!

John Courtright

I think I shall wait for the YT edit on this one. I watched this film for the first time relatively recently and am in no hurry to view it again in its entirety... maybe I'll just skip to the "car" scene just to see the looks on your faces. :-) Anyway, since it sounds like you both enjoyed it, I won't badmouth it here (I've already offered my list of its many flaws elsewhere), but I will say that this film, whatever one thinks of it personally, is significant for marking a turning point in the career of its director Martin Brest. Brest's story is one of the great tragedies of Hollywood with a meteoric rise to fame equaled only by as swift a fall from grace. With only 7 feature films to his credit (all made between 1977 and 2003), he was the hot new director in town when he helmed the terrific 1984 Eddie Murphy vehicle BEVERLY HILLS COP, only his third movie. He then followed that up 4 years later with one of the greatest action-comedies of the 1980s: MIDNIGHT RUN (one of my personal favorites). Another 4 years later, he directed Al Pacino to his first and so far only acting Oscar in SCENT OF A WOMAN, a film also nominated for director and picture. He was on top of the world. There was no stopping him. Then came MEET JOE BLACK. A remake of the 1934 classic DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY, it was released in the Christmas season anticipating being the big contender for awards the following year... but that didn't happen. While it has developed a bit of a cult following now, in 1998, most critics hated it (citing its overlong running time, glacial pace -- one review said, "to call [it] leaden would do an injustice to lead" -- inflated sense of self-importance and strange, off-putting performance by Pitt) and most audiences were indifferent to it. It underperformed at the box office and even received a Razzie nomination for "Worst Remake." A disappointment certainly for Brest, but even though in L.A. you're only considered as good as your last movie, this was not something he couldn't ultimately bounce back from. Until his next film came out, a motion picture widely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made, one that was absolutely savaged upon its release and whose colossal failure made MEET JOE BLACK's tepid reception look positively warm by comparison: I am talking, of course, about the notorious Bennifer debacle called GIGLI. That was the end of Martin Brest. He became persona no grata in the industry after that. He not only left Hollywood, he more or less withdrew from public life. It's such a shame because he was obviously truly talented and made three of the best, most successful films of the 80s/90s. I mean, nobody's perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. They shouldn't have to destroy your career. It still saddens me to think about it and I sometimes wish he would come back and make one more film, but alas, I don't think that's going to happen. :-(

Stick Figure Studios

That's one of those, "Why didn't I think of that?" ideas. It will also help me cut down on my melted butter portion.

Kevin

I heard about people going to see this film to catch the Ep. I trailer, but you're the first person I've ever talked to who actually did it

the always eating was definitely a thing in his ocean's movies... decidedly so. lol

Andrew Rose

Cassie. The gorilla movie you may be thinking of is Mighty Joe Young. Stars Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron.

Brian McGovern

Carly cannot pick a movie either of you have seen though, right? Who wants to have a "Schlocktober" category in October? The best of the worse. Birdemic, The Room, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Please make this happen. Gotta take the bad with the good. Cannot all be classics. :)

Brian McGovern

Funny, yet TRUE story: back when Star Wars Episode 1 was nearing completion, the trailer was rumored to be released before "Meet Joe Black". Back then they still released trailers with movies vs "online". As a hardcore Star Wars fan I was dying to see the first trailer for a new Star Wars movie. We hadn't had any new movies since 83 (no, I don't count the ewok movies or the special editions). But the only way to see it was to go see "Meet Joe Black". A lot of people paid for a ticket, saw the trailer and just left before the movie started. LOL I actually got wind that they would show the trailer before and AFTER the movie! So I asked this girl I worked with at the time to go see the movie. Like most girls, she was excited to see a Brad Pitt movie. However she was wondering why I wanted to see it. Anyhow we took our seats and then BAMM!!! Episode 1 trailer!!! My date immediately knew and she was like "OH MY GOSH!!!". Anyhow I powered through the almost 3 hour Joe Black movie and then told her "let's stay for the credits". She's like okay, still emotional from the movie. Then BAMM! They played the Episode 1 trailer again!! Again my date was like "OMG!!! Again?!"😝😝😝 Sorry for the long post, but that is my only real memory of "Meet Joe Black".

Todzilla

Uggh Brad Pitt. 😂 J/k

Crushing on Brad Pitt, great PPOTM Cassie.🌟🌟🌟🌟
