I read The Exorcist when I was about 13, and it terrified me. I didn't watch the movie for years, and only then with the lights on and my mom in the room. I've seen it several times since then, and it still works on me. I like the slow build, because it somehow makes it more real and gives more time to get invested in the characters.

"The Exorcist depends a lot on what beliefs you carry into it." Robin T, I agree. However, to the Atheists out there, I challange you to keep an open mind. I have experienced things I can not explain, and which were stastically impossible as to having been random.

Richard Bourne

Robin T: I am actually a religious man and the movie is unsettling and unnerving. But it's also quite slow in big stretches, a lot of it takes place during broad daylight, so it gives you a lot of time to breathe, and some of the effects are a bit iffy. Maybe it's because I watched The Ring and The Grudge when I was 7-8 years old that it takes quite a lot to scare me. I'm sure in 1973 I would've thought this was the scariest thing ever. I guess the concept is scarier than the execution.

I think one's reaction to The Exorcist depends a lot on what beliefs you carry into it. I have always been resolutely nonreligious and pragmatic, and I found The Exorcist to be an involving and sometimes unnerving thriller, but not especially scary. But if your beliefs allow any possibility that this sort of thing could actually happen (as, for instance, Catholicism explicitly does), then this movie will scare the bejeezus out of you just a surely as it would have 50 years ago.

Which areas? Do tell.

Anthony Vawser

The Exorcist? I disagree. It holds up remarkably well.

Dooly

Fun to watch with you Cassie. I was terrified of this when I was a kid. The clown, the tree, and the footsteps were in my nightmares for years.

Jeff

Watch it again. It has not aged that well in certain areas.

Thank you for letting me know! I'm glad to hear this.

Cassie already has a ban on any kind of of possession movies.

Richard Maurer

Scariest movie I've ever seen was Exorcist. And then I went to see the extended version in the theater, and that was the last time I'll ever watch that movie, ever. Given Cassie's reaction to Poltergeist, I hope this community never rooks her into watching that.
