The Firm - Full Reaction

Great reaction, love that you're also Tom Cruise fans, which I've been since the early 90's. I know it's a long shot but John Grisham wrote a sequel to this book, called 'The Exchange', cross fingers Cruise does this book too, it's about Mitch McDeere 15 years after the events of this movie.

JPDotCom23

Somehow I get the feeling this is too specific. Something that happened in your life? I'm not a woman, but yes he should have told. And I hated that they got back together in the end, they shouldn't have. Setup or not

Shreddy

Great movie! When Mitch McDeere confesses to Abbey that he was unfaithful on the beach when he was in the Caymans, that elicited an interesting reaction. It seemed like Cassie and her sister sympathized with Abbey, but I’m wondering if they think that it would have been better if Mitch never brought up the matter at all, and spared Abbbey the heartache. I’d be interested in hearing what other women think about this. Should Mitch have confessed these details? Or kept this matter a secret and not spoken about it unless the pictures came out?

I’m a Tom Cruise fan. Don’t really care what he does outside of the movie industry, that’s his business. I just like that fact when he’s on screen he gives it his all and I respect him for it. Having said that I enjoy his movies. Unfortunately didn’t care for this one. I actually fell asleep twice when i first saw it back in 93. And not fan of Interview with the Vampire either (sorry Cassie lol). I’m not a fan the first 3 MI movies but i love the rest of them and can’t wait for the 7th installment next year. My other favorites include, the Jack Reacher movies, Born on the 4th of July, Minority Report, Eyes Wide Shut and enjoyed his cameo in Tropic Thunder. But my favorite overall performance from him overall was as Frank TJ Mackey in Magnolia. Highly recommended you check that one out. He plays a supporting character in it but he outshines everyone in there. Also definitely check out Collateral as well.

Joe M

I'm with you on Tom Cruise. It's not that he's not a good actor, it's that when he's in a movie I see "Tom Cruise", not the character he's playing. But he's excellent in this, and also Collateral and Edge of Tomorrow.

David Martin

Yes, I remember several friends had read the novel, The Firm, and having just come out of law school that the time, it was a must see movie. Back then I was shocked at how "Mission Impossible" it was and that a first year Associate Lawyer could possibly handle all that. Later in life, I am less impressed to be honest.

Richard Bourne

Okay, so the only thing I don't get is how it could NOT be better for Mitch to tell Abby he cheated than the firm. If the firm tells her, it looks like he's hiding it. If he tells her, at least he's been honest. How could there be any question as to whether or not he was better off telling her or not?

Art of Free Speech

Cassie, The Firm is based on a John Grisham novel, the same man who wrote Time to Kill. Other books he wrote that were made into movies - Pelican Brief with Julie Roberts and Denzel Washington, Run Away Jury- The novel's focus on big tobacco was retained until the 1999 film The Insider was released, necessitating a plot change from tobacco to gun companies, The Client, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, The Gingerbread Man.

natalie St Clair

Cassie, I'm right there with you thinking that I don't like Tom Cruise but every single time I watch a movie he's in, I almost always love the movie and the part he plays. SO, how about a young Tom Cruise movie? Young as in a 1983 movie called All The Right Moves. He stars in the movie along with Lea Thompson and Craig T Nelson and from what I've looked at, you haven't seen it yet either. I really think you'd like it but it's just a suggestion. It seems like a movie both you and Carly might enjoy. Speaking of, I love when you both react to movies together but it's also nice when you react alone as well. Either way it's pure entertainment and it's a win-win for all of us whether you react alone or with Carly. Thank you for considering it!

Rob in PA

Other great courtroom dramas to add to your list: Philadelphia, Erin Brokavich, the Rainmaker, judgement at Nuremberg, Witness for the Prosecution, Inherit the Wind,Primal Fear, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Tinkerbell

The Rainmaker is a classic. And maybe Coppola's best film since Apocalypse Now

Jason Dolan

Haha, yes!

Jason Dolan

Thank Ya'll so much for this. The Firm is one of my favorites and I very much enjoyed your Reaction. This film falls into one of my favorite categories, An Ordinary Person in an Extraordinary Situation.

Larry Darrell

I love it when movies use Mail Fraud as a plot point. Always been fascinated by it, because it doesn't seem like many people know about it. It is illegal to mail anything that is false. It is a federal felony. The flip side is that whatever the Post Office delivers, is true. [See Miracle on 34th Street (1947)]. There is such a thing as "The Poor Man's Copyright." If you have something that you want copyrighted, such as a novel, screenplay, music recording, etc, but aren't able to do it right away, then you can mail a copy of it to yourself. As long as you keep it sealed, and it has a postmark date, if someone steals your piece of work, then you could present your package in court and prove that your work was done before someone else's.

Larry Darrell

I liked the Band THE FIRM much more than this movie

James Loveless

It's easy to get those HH names mixed up.

Stick Figure Studios

Okay Cassie, since you mentioned again how much you enjoy this genre, please watch another John Grisham book that was turned into a movie “The Rainmaker” also add Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts to the list.

Tara

Hey Cassie, Holly Hunter wasn’t in Twister. That was Helen Hunt with Bill Paxton. Holly Hunter played Tammy.

Tara

Yeah, even I can’t come up with something to justify that line. Maybe it makes more sense if you read the novel.

Andrew Hogan

I only watched that once, thought it was alright. I prefer him in Crimson Tide.

Andrew Hogan

Knight and Day is severely underrated. I think it gets a bad rap because it’s a sort spoof on action thrillers and everybody took it too seriously.

Andrew Hogan

Different diets

Andrew Hogan

Welp, that was AMAZING! What a great reaction. Maybe my favorite Carly reaction. So fun. You're going to have fun doing all of Tom Cruise's best movies!

Jason Dolan

it's all kept saying when I saw him on screen! haha

Philip Alan

I forgot how good this movie was. I haven't seen it sense it first came out. Great cast. Great reaction ladies. Thanks for helping me rediscover this movie. I had forgotten about it. I remembered parts of it. But, I had forgotten most of it. Very enjoyable watching it again with you Ladies.

Rick Williams

I heartily cosign this recommendation. The Rainmaker is not only an excellent courtroom drama, but also one that's very accurate in the details.

Chris B.

This one's pretty good, and still holds up. A really good courtroom John Grisham movie is The Rainmaker, starring Matt Damon. Probably my favorite of the bunch, and I believe it comes equipped with many of your particular cinematic inclinations.

Steve Mercier

Best movie with Ed Harris is The Right Stuff, in which he plays John Glenn. Great movie based on a fantastic book recounting the exploits of America's first astronauts.

Just Plain Bob

I thought I had seen this back in the day, but I hadn’t. Pretty good flick! Lots of great actors in this one! Nice reaction ladies! It’s funny sometimes seeing how far technology has come. You guys kept saying “If he only had a camera phone.” He wouldn’t have had to make all those copies! 😂 Speaking of all those copies. They would all fit neatly onto a USB stick today! You guys are on a serious Tom Cruise binge of late. I wonder if you’ve seen Knight and Day? It stars Tom and Cameron Diaz. An Action Spy movie. With some comedy and romance sprinkled in. I think you and Carly would enjoy it!

Robert da Spruce

Ed Harris & Tom Cruise had dialogue in Top Gun: Maverick.

Jay Robert

Great movie and great reaction guys! It's hilarious how you both have the same facial expressions, body postures, and hand gestures throughout the movie. You guys are so in sync on this one! It's adorable!

John Courtright

I had not seen this movie for over 20 years until tonight. This movie was based on the novel by John Grisham, The Firm. I read it back in the early 1990s before I saw the movie a couple of years later. I knew when I was reading the novel that Tom Cruise had already been cast for the movie version so I visualized Tom Cruise as Mitch all throughout the novel. I recommend the book. It goes into even more detail. It is a masterpiece. One big difference between the novel and the movie: not one time is the F word used in the novel. I like that about the novel. I don't like hearing the F word. That was Hollywood. You mentioned you thought the bald FBI agent looked familiar. That is because he played the admiral at the beginning of the Top Gun: Maverick movie who pulled the plug on Mach 10, and assigned Tom Cruise to teach in the Top Gun school. The actor is Ed Harris. Another great movie based on a John Grisham novel was The Pelican Brief with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. Great reaction as always from you and Carly.

Eric

Yes to this... and also TOOTSIE.

Stick Figure Studios

Enemy of the State with Will Smith and Gene Hackman is another edge of your seat 90’s movie. It’ll have Cassie using her salty language again 😂😂 Cassie: Oh frick frick frick frick frick frick 😂😂

Anthony Oberhauser

Diabeetus.

Carol_White

Cassie now that you've seen another movie with Ed Harris in it, (the FBI agent) you should do his movie The abyss. It's pretty awesome and emotional. James Cameron of Terminator directed it. Michael bien (Reese from the first Terminator) is also in it.

Michael Lynch

Cassie, now that you have a taste of Syndey Pollack, the director of this movie, you should put "Three Days of the Condor" on your list. Another picture by Pollack that has the same sort of suspense and conspiracy aspects that you enjoyed in this film. And also has a Robert Redford in his prime.

DarthChef

In my opinion, this is the rare movie to elevate a book, the movie ending is different and better than the book

christopher b swanson

An awesome reaction as always, ladies. I've always liked THE FIRM (of all the movies based on a John Grisham novel, this is probably my favorite). I never read the book, so I have only ever been able to evaluate it as a movie and on that basis, it's pretty terrific. Smart, witty, suspenseful; intelligently written, marvelously acted by an incredible cast, beautifully scored by Dave Grusin (you comment on how the music doesn't seem to match the kind of movie, but I think that's it's genius; the whole score is basically Grusin at his piano playing all different types of tunes: jazz, blues, love ballads and even suspense music... it's one of my favorite soundtracks and it deserved the Oscar nomination it received), solidly directed by Sydney Pollack who also did SABRINA, and one of the best foot-chases ever put on film. But oh, MAN! That line that Jeanne Tripplehorn delivers to Cruise in the final scene is absolutely horrible. It makes me physically cringe every time. It's the kind of lame eye-rolling meaningless nonsense that Trey Parker and Matt Stone satirize so perfectly in TEAM AMERICA ("Maybe feelings are feelings because we can't control them.") and it sticks out like a sore thumb precisely because the rest of the dialogue is so good. Robert Towne is a great writer, but I don't know what he was thinking with this passage: "I've loved you all my life. Even before we met. Part of it wasn't even you. It was just a promise of you... and these last days you kept your promise." Ugh. Good movie. Bad closing lines.

Stick Figure Studios

Ed Harris in "The Abyss" & "The Right Stuff"...

Celeste McAllister

I'm with you. I think I like thrillers more than straight out action movies, which I am finding repetitive these days. The suspense in the thrillers is more exciting than the action.

MikeLL

Cassie loves the crime thriller yet again!!

David

Collateral is excellent!

John Courtright

The film score was amazing! Dave Grusin is a national treasure!

John Courtright

2 must watch movies are PLATOON and TRUE ROMANCE

Ewanbhoy Martin

The client is great!!

brooke atkins

Right? Every movie at the beginning of the channel she would say. I don’t think I really like him very much. Now she can’t stop watching his movies!! So Cassie can you admit you’ve had a big change of heart about Tom cruise? You probably felt that way cause you listened to Al the rumors about him and his crazy religion. I don’t follow his personal life but I do love most of his movies.

brooke atkins

When you did Top Gun last year, you spoke about the fact that you didn't like Tom Cruise very much. Now he's the actor you've watched the most on the channel. Gotta love the irony!

Shehab Dawoud

As always, great reaction from the PiB duo. This movie is a blast from the past for me. Wonderful times to be alive. Since we are on a "Tom Cruise Marathon", which I absolutely do not mind, may I suggest checking out a couple of his "against type" roles in Interview with the Vampire (1994) and Collateral (2004). I would also throw in Tropic Thunder (2008). P.S. Interview with the Vampire co-stars none other than Mr. Brad Pitt himself. Cheers!

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Great job! May I suggest "The Client" next, since you're going down the Grisham rabbit hole?

Ryan Cornell

That was Ed Harris..one of the greatest actors of our time…we all keep asking you to watch “The Rock” with him and Cage & Connery…it will be one of your favorites

John McCloy

First time seeing this since I saw it in the theaters when I was 13. Man, that Hackman can act, and what a stacked cast. Brilliantly directed by Sydney Pollack, low-key one of the best directors of the last fifty years.

Brian Harris

Movies like this are my kind of movies. Thrillers are one of my go to genres. I’m happy you and Carly enjoyed it.

James1035

That scene in the movie towards the end where Mitch was finally busted, and the FBI guy was on the phone telling him to get out was super intense! Great job ladies as always. Run Tom run!

Shawn Kildal

Maybe it was on my end, but was the quality of the video not up to par? Besides Apolo 13, you might also recognize Ed Harris from another Tom Cruise movie that you just saw, Top Gun Maverick. He's great in everything he does. Also, the young seductive lady on the beach you might recognize from The Legends of the Fall as Brad Pitt's wife that died tragically. Also, the actor who played the brother you couldn't place was in L.A. Confidential and in the 3rd Bourne movie Bourne Ultimatum. Holly Hunter was nominated for best supporting actress in this. The score to The Firm was almost entirely just Dave Grustin and his piano. He was nominated for an academy award for it but lost to the one and only John Williams (Schindler's List)

Shawn Kildal

The FBI agent was played by Ed Harris, who was indeed in APOLLO 13 but also acted with Cruise again in TOP GUN: MAVERICK as Admiral Cain, the guy who tried to shut down Cruise's test flight in the beginning of the film.

Patrick Flanagan

Oh and I freaking love Gene Hackman. So much charisma and charm.

Michael Lynch

I have always loved this movie. Tom Cruise is great.

Michael Lynch

Was this like after 2am Cassie Time? I really hope uploading these is not the reason for staying up this late.😪 Tom Cruise By The Numbers (some MI5, MI6 scenes): https://youtu.be/mAnUZN8fLQo - 48m 15s overall run time in 39 scenes - 6m 14s longest run time in MI4

Gábor Árki

Private Investigator Eddie Lomax was played by Gary Busey. He wasn’t acting.

Ike

Something absolutely mind blowing to keep in mind, Cassie. Tom Cruise is one year older NOW, than Wilfred Brimley WAS when this was made. He played William Devasher I think he was the guy in charge of security at the firm.

Brian McGovern

Great movie for sure but (as is often the case) the book was much better, with a completely different and more exciting ending. Have read it several times actually. Glad you enjoyed the flick.

Andrew
