I applaud both of you for getting out of your comfort zone and watching movies like "We Were Soldiers" and Cassie for watching "Full Metal Jacket". And I don't think any less of yall for not knowing the military language. The difference you noticed in the training of Full Metal Jacket and We Were Soldiers is the difference in experience of the troops being trained. I went through Boot in 1977 (10 years in the Marine Corps) and I understand why the training was so harsh. They were taking civilians, with varied life experiences, multiple cultures and levels of racism, and they have 3 months to make them a Marine, someone that would help in combat, and trust in combat, someone that 4 months earlier he wouldn't have talked to. It's to jar their comfort zone enough that it crumbles and can be rebuilt. Anyway, I love your posts, when I need a pick up I rewatch It's a Wonderful Life. I just wish you woulde take Carli to see the Shire (LOTR).

I know. It was a general comment as to the hell of war. I can relay some first hand comments from Korea that are just as bad.... starting with a US draftee (let us remember men were drafted back then) where he was pinned under Chinese fixed position machinecgun fire behind a tree that was cut to shreds just a few inches above his head. After that position was taken out, he realized that the wall it was mounted upon did not allow it to go any lower, which saved his life.

To be clear, Saving Private Ryan was set during WWII, during and just after D-Day, not Vietnam.

Viet Nam was horrific. It is good they have made movies like this and Saving Private Ryan to show that. I have talked to two veterans of Viet Nam in my life and heard terrible things, and those were only the things they were willing to discuss/share. I have been lucky to have talked to veterans if WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq (both) and Afghanistan. There is a lot of stuff not in the history books for all of these. First hand accounts are I rely upon most. War truly can be hell on Earth.
