Jojo Rabbit (2019) - Full Reaction

Comments

I first read a book about Hitler 50 years ago when I was 10 years old. This was my first watch of the movie. I loved it. I had no idea how good this movie. One of my favorite movies of recent years. 10/10 Well acted. Scarlett Johansson nailed it. The kid good acting. I like the Sam Rockwell character. The final scene is awesome. F*ck Hitler

Clay F

The bike Captain K brought in was not his moms bike

Mark Harrell

Never saw this film before, really enjoyed seeing it with you Cassie. I also really enjoyed the 10 year old point of view on hitler and all of the inconsistencies in his world view.. He's 10 after all.. Very impactful film.

David

I can propose some other Hitler adjacent comedies as well.. The Producers and in the more Mel Brooks category- To Be or Not To Be (1983)

Jon Freezin-Rain

@Shawn Kildal I’m talking about Superman: The Movie (1978). It’s being posted sometime today.

Daniel Pulliam

don't care

warcrimes

When she commented on her shoes I started to weep almost instantly. This movie gets me.

Myles Away

Jon Freezin-Rain

When Cassie commented on Scarlett's shoes I knew that moment was going to hit her like a ton of bricks

Jason Dolan

I didn't have time to watch the whole thing but I let it play in the background. You wouldn't recognize him but the one who played imaginary Hitler is in Thor Ragnarok as the alien rock-guy Korg, you know the one with quick funny lines.

Mannygogou

now this is cinema...

Mannygogou

Finished the reaction. Enjoyable as always... should be noted, the guy who played Hitler was Taika Waititi, who also wrote and directed this film. He also did Thor Ragnerok, which I think is the best Marvel film to date. But this is from a guy that doesn’t really like Marvel films. .... Definitely a talent to watch. He’s gonna make some more great films.

Jeff Milcheck

Hate Nazis, LOVE this movie. Sure it's already been said but this is an amazing movie on so many levels. Sometimes someone with an imagination like Taika Waititi comes along and gives you such a surreal but universally honest take on a specific event. Man, the way this story is told, these characters, it's like a cathartic experience, acknowledging the absolute absurdity of the Nazis and their bullshit, through the eyes of a kid who just wanted to be "a good German". I don't mean that to, in any way, disparage German people, I was stationed in Germany for two years in the Army and I really loved it, I was in a relatively small town and the people were great. Just saying that Jojo learned what I think is a universally important lesson, that being a human being should come before any made up idea of nationality.

Your loss not ours.

Jeff Milcheck

Love this movie and can’t wait to watch the reaction... If you wanna see a more harrowing and realistic take on Hitlers last days, highly recommend DOWNFALL... a chilling experience.... It’s probably most know to people from the thousands of memes created around one particular scene. But I bet most of those people have never actually seen the full film..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htvYfe6wz_8

Jeff Milcheck

Great reaction Cassie! My first time seeing the film. I thought it was excellent! Reminded me of Life is Beautiful Also, I just noticed you had a Middle Earth blanket! 😀👍

Robert da Spruce

i do love this movie. can't wait to watch along

Chip MC

Seen it once and that was enough. Can't do it again, not even with you Cassie, sorry.

Beau Mont

This is a film I will be skipping

Malcolm Slater

Such a brilliant film. It never ceases to make me weep.

Myles Away

Your reactions were perfect. "what is going on"....."this is absurd" That's the whole point of the movie, showing the absurdity of it all. The Nazi youth and Nazi ideals would be funny/absurd if it wasn't so sad

Alex

Because it's YouTube

Has the download screen changed? Why is it saying Google Drive can't scan. Where are the 720p options? Is this me or does everyone have the same thing?

John Cranberry

Great movie and great reaction! I hadn't seen it since it came out and I forgot just how moving it is. I'm so glad Cassie watched it. I knew she would love it.

TigerDelta

We’ll get your refund for this one out to you ASAP. Can we get you anything while you wait? Pacifier, maybe…?

Jason Chirevas

I had to make a black post-it note to cover Indiana Jones staring at us the whole time. It creeps my wife out more than me. Lol

London Davis

I'm so glad you finally watched this amazing movie!! Thank you so much!!

Ed Garland

"They're making him seem like a rockstar." Exactly. He was a rockstar. It's all about the cult of personality.

Stick Figure Studios

Buddy! It is SO worth it. Great film. (GREAT reaction to it, too.)

Jon Johns

One of the reasons THE GREAT DICTATOR is great is Chaplin is able to transition from satire to profundity at the end and actually nail it. That’s hard.

Jason Chirevas

nope , sorry , next movie please

zynjams

Have you seen Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR? If not, I highly recommend it.

Stick Figure Studios

I was just thinking, if you like movies that are not like anything you’ve seen before I recommend, as I imagine many others have, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. It doesn’t have much in common with Jojo Rabbit except maybe, in the end, it is a beautiful story.

Daniel Goldberg

Count me among those who find this movie brilliant, and among those who very much appreciate you sharing your reaction to it with us. I thought I would mention a couple of things I missed the first time I saw Jojo Rabbit and haven’t seen mentioned here in the comments yet. I got the hints that Captain K and Finkle were a couple, but missed something that was more than a hint. If you look closely near the end when they are in their more flamboyant uniforms you can see pink triangles on the uniforms and all ove Finkle’s cape. As you may or may not know the nazi’s forced homosexuals to wear pink triangles, just as they forced Jews to wear yellow stars of David. Even more reason why Captain K would have wanted to help Jojo and his mother. Also, when Captain K shows up at Jojo’s house when the gestapo was searching it, the bike he is carrying is Jojo’s mother’s. So Captain K already knew what had happened and was there to try to protect Jojo and Elsa.

Daniel Goldberg

At first I did like this movie very much, but it was only during the second watch when I really started loving it. This was the third time watching it and I got so emotional all over again. I fully agree, it plays a very fine line but I think they managed to pull it off, which is partly thanks to the clever writing but I think even more so thanks to the great acting. The casting of the child actors was brilliant, both Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo and Archie Yates as Yorki are amazing in their roles but the entire cast is great. The sad thing and the real tragedy is that despite the absurdity, so much of what the movie is showing is actually true. The insane propaganda about the Jews and aryan superiority. The Hitlerjugend completely brainwashing the children to a level they often reported on their own families and friends if suspecting they are betraying the country or the nazi ideals. How at the end of the war even young children in their early teens or sometimes even below that were drafted or willing to fight (the youngest captured was 8 years old, 12 year old boys and girls were manning artillery and anti-aircraft units). I personally can only compare it to one movie, Life Is Beautiful / La vita è bella (1997), which also mixes humor and tragedy a very unique way. It is a story about a Jewish family in a concentration camp where the father is doing everything he can to protect his son from the harsh reality. But according to Letterboxd, Cassie has already seen this one.

Gábor Árki

It's a tricky balancing act doing a comic satire of such a dark, serious subject, but I think Taika Waititi acquits himself nicely here (personally, I think I might actually prefer this film to Roberto Benigni's more problematic LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL). The style is sort of Wes Anderson-y. The child actors are superb. Waititi's performance as the "imaginary friend Hitler" doesn't always work, but it has its moments. Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR is still the best movie of this sort though.

Stick Figure Studios

Thank you for that touching reaction, Cassie. Seeing the movie, and how it affected you, it really was the most bittersweet experience.

MikeLL

As I'm sure you've seen by now, the man who played Hitler in this (rock man from Thor) was also the director, and did Hunt for the Wilderpeople as well.

aarswft

Yes, it is the same director as Hunt for the Wilderpeople! Good comparison!

Cole Jennett

Craig, I highly recommend Look Who's Back (2015), a serio-comic take on Hitler transported from his bunker in 1945 to present day Berlin. The film seriously addresses some of the issues you raised. Oliver Masucci's portrayal of Hitler is mesmerizing and on a par with Bruno Ganz's brilliance in Downfall (2004).

Michael Threapleton

I was planning on superman, now I have to get myself into a different mindset. I never planned on watching this movie, I don't care for movies that poke fun at pure evil people from our history. I think it's best to loathe and revile them and move on. Once we start lampooning them, some will forget and start to believe it wasn't all that bad, after all. Just my opinion.

Craig Russell

I actually haven’t seen Jojo Rabbit. So this will be a first time watch along with you. Looking forward to it!

Robert da Spruce

I can't wait...

Pepe M

@Pepe M Yes, it’s supposed to be coming out this week.

Daniel Pulliam

My note would be 5'5 or 6. It was a Roberto Benigni's "La vita e bella" style, a tale into second world war.

Pepe M

Yes, unless you hate movies.

Pickupthepieces76

I’ve never seen this movie. Do you guys recommend it?

James1035

I have not seen this movie Cassie. Got another one on my list to watch now!!

Steven Ashford

I dreading seeing your reaction to the shoes! 👞 👞 😓 Don’t want to see you sad! Such a good movie!!

Patrick Gibbs

Aww, been refreshing all day hoping for Superman. OTOH, I adored JJR, so I’m super excited for this one, too! :)
