Well this was unlike any movie I had seen before! It was quirky and heart wrenching and clever and beautiful. Every actor was talented perfection . Loved it! Hope you enjoy the reaction!
I first read a book about Hitler 50 years ago when I was 10 years old.
This was my first watch of the movie. I loved it. I had no idea how good this movie. One of my favorite movies of recent years. 10/10
Well acted. Scarlett Johansson nailed it.
The kid good acting. I like the Sam Rockwell character. The final scene is awesome.

Never saw this film before, really enjoyed seeing it with you Cassie. I also really enjoyed the 10 year old point of view on hitler and all of the inconsistencies in his world view.. He's 10 after all.. Very impactful film.

I didn't have time to watch the whole thing but I let it play in the background. You wouldn't recognize him but the one who played imaginary Hitler is in Thor Ragnarok as the alien rock-guy Korg, you know the one with quick funny lines.

Finished the reaction. Enjoyable as always... should be noted, the guy who played Hitler was Taika Waititi, who also wrote and directed this film. He also did Thor Ragnerok, which I think is the best Marvel film to date. But this is from a guy that doesn’t really like Marvel films. .... Definitely a talent to watch. He’s gonna make some more great films.

Hate Nazis, LOVE this movie.
Sure it's already been said but this is an amazing movie on so many levels. Sometimes someone with an imagination like Taika Waititi comes along and gives you such a surreal but universally honest take on a specific event.
Man, the way this story is told, these characters, it's like a cathartic experience, acknowledging the absolute absurdity of the Nazis and their bullshit, through the eyes of a kid who just wanted to be "a good German".
I don't mean that to, in any way, disparage German people, I was stationed in Germany for two years in the Army and I really loved it, I was in a relatively small town and the people were great. Just saying that Jojo learned what I think is a universally important lesson, that being a human being should come before any made up idea of nationality.

Love this movie and can’t wait to watch the reaction... If you wanna see a more harrowing and realistic take on Hitlers last days, highly recommend DOWNFALL... a chilling experience.... It’s probably most know to people from the thousands of memes created around one particular scene. But I bet most of those people have never actually seen the full film..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htvYfe6wz_8

That's the whole point of the movie, showing the absurdity of it all. The Nazi youth and Nazi ideals would be funny/absurd if it wasn't so sad

One of the reasons THE GREAT DICTATOR is great is Chaplin is able to transition from satire to profundity at the end and actually nail it. That’s hard.

I was just thinking, if you like movies that are not like anything you’ve seen before I recommend, as I imagine many others have, Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. It doesn’t have much in common with Jojo Rabbit except maybe, in the end, it is a beautiful story.

Count me among those who find this movie brilliant, and among those who very much appreciate you sharing your reaction to it with us. I thought I would mention a couple of things I missed the first time I saw Jojo Rabbit and haven’t seen mentioned here in the comments yet. I got the hints that Captain K and Finkle were a couple, but missed something that was more than a hint. If you look closely near the end when they are in their more flamboyant uniforms you can see pink triangles on the uniforms and all ove Finkle’s cape. As you may or may not know the nazi’s forced homosexuals to wear pink triangles, just as they forced Jews to wear yellow stars of David. Even more reason why Captain K would have wanted to help Jojo and his mother. Also, when Captain K shows up at Jojo’s house when the gestapo was searching it, the bike he is carrying is Jojo’s mother’s. So Captain K already knew what had happened and was there to try to protect Jojo and Elsa.

At first I did like this movie very much, but it was only during the second watch when I really started loving it. This was the third time watching it and I got so emotional all over again. I fully agree, it plays a very fine line but I think they managed to pull it off, which is partly thanks to the clever writing but I think even more so thanks to the great acting. The casting of the child actors was brilliant, both Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo and Archie Yates as Yorki are amazing in their roles but the entire cast is great.
The sad thing and the real tragedy is that despite the absurdity, so much of what the movie is showing is actually true. The insane propaganda about the Jews and aryan superiority. The Hitlerjugend completely brainwashing the children to a level they often reported on their own families and friends if suspecting they are betraying the country or the nazi ideals. How at the end of the war even young children in their early teens or sometimes even below that were drafted or willing to fight (the youngest captured was 8 years old, 12 year old boys and girls were manning artillery and anti-aircraft units).
I personally can only compare it to one movie, Life Is Beautiful / La vita è bella (1997), which also mixes humor and tragedy a very unique way. It is a story about a Jewish family in a concentration camp where the father is doing everything he can to protect his son from the harsh reality. But according to Letterboxd, Cassie has already seen this one.

It's a tricky balancing act doing a comic satire of such a dark, serious subject, but I think Taika Waititi acquits himself nicely here (personally, I think I might actually prefer this film to Roberto Benigni's more problematic LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL). The style is sort of Wes Anderson-y. The child actors are superb. Waititi's performance as the "imaginary friend Hitler" doesn't always work, but it has its moments. Charlie Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR is still the best movie of this sort though.

Craig, I highly recommend Look Who's Back (2015), a serio-comic take on Hitler transported from his bunker in 1945 to present day Berlin. The film seriously addresses some of the issues you raised. Oliver Masucci's portrayal of Hitler is mesmerizing and on a par with Bruno Ganz's brilliance in Downfall (2004).

I was planning on superman, now I have to get myself into a different mindset. I never planned on watching this movie, I don't care for movies that poke fun at pure evil people from our history. I think it's best to loathe and revile them and move on. Once we start lampooning them, some will forget and start to believe it wasn't all that bad, after all.
Just my opinion.
