Spaceballs (1987) - Full Reaction

Oh my! What do I even say about Spaceballs, it was actually completely ridiculous... but it did have me laughing. Like we actually saw John Candy in a cheap dog costume eating slip from a bucket?! I thought a lot of it was kind of silly "potty humor" 7th grade jokes but I was also pretty happy to understand so many references. I can't imagine how much fun the cast had doing this, thinking about what the bloopers must have been made me happy. Hope you guys enjoy the reaction!

Spaceballs (1987) - Full Reaction

Comments

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Spaceballs and all other Mel Brooks movies represent the golden age of cinema.

John Hansen

If you want more Mel Brooks humor, 10 years before Space Balls, try Blazzing Saddles, History of the World part 1, and yes, Young Frankenstein.

Joe M

Mel brooks best film was Young Frankenstein! Brooks himself stated that Young Frankenstein was the best movie he ever did and if he made a thousand more movies none would be as great.

natalie St Clair

That’s funny ? And it would be SKOORB as his idiotic idea was spelling brooks backward. Sort of

Mark Harrell

The entire gag with Helmet and Sandurz watching the movie they are a part of is a great play on logic and paradoxes.

You could be completely correct. She asked for a Mel Brooks movie. I take her at her word. This channel is to move her out of her comfort zone of chick flicks & rom coms according to her. In doing so, she’s discovered she likes many movies she was 100% sure she’d hate before seeing them (‘Fury Road’). She has positively hated other movies (‘Full Metal Jacket’), even going so far as to say “I’ll never watch this movie again” (‘Schindler’s List’) but that she felt it was important to see it. She claims, with quite justified pride, more than once to now be a cinephile. It would be a strange version of one of those to have never seen a movie you didn’t, personally, like.

Lamar Smith

I don't even like it, and I'm old. She had obviously doesn't like these silly movies. Let's just recommend movies she'll like.

Jon Hoover

She didn't like this, she's not going to like Blazing Saddles. I don't even like it and I'm of the correct age. Let's just stop recommending Mel Brooks films to somebody that doesn't like Mel Brooks style films.

Jon Hoover

To Cassie: Have to watch “Young Frankenstein” much better Mel Brooks film.

Larry

It's interesting how one's opinions and tastes change over the years. When I first saw this film I found it entertaining and funny. I was not expecting, after a 20 year gap, to find it again entertaining and funny, but it was! Contrast that to a recent rewatch of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. When I first saw that it was one of the funniest of all time. I couldn't lavish enough praise on it. Last week I found it tedious and borderline irritating. Prior to these two rewatches I would have bet the farm on the reverse being true. Concerned that my opinion of The Godfather might have eroded over time, I watched it again last week. How far did I get into it before the first lump in the throat, misty eyed moment? When the undertaker offers money to Don Corleone to avenge his daughter. So less than five minutes in. All is well with the world.

Michael Threapleton

Well, Dearest Cassie, there really is only one answer to your Mel Brooks question. It simply HAS to be ‘Blazing Saddles.’ I’m not sure you’ll at all like it and it certainly is a movie that could NOT be made today. It is an absolute classic and you are not as big a cinephile as you want to be without it.

Lamar Smith

You would Alex LOL.

My_Cousin_Mose

Haven't seen this since I was 10-years-old, and it's definitely the type of movie a 10-year-old would call a comedic masterpiece. To be clear, I love this movie.

Alex Villarreal

Been waiting a lonnnnnng time for this one.

Jacob Bender

Very little people praise Mel Brook's "The Producers"... A hilarious movie about a play. Then he produced a hit Broadway play, based on that movie about a play. Genius~

Mr. Writhms

Well…that went about as well as I anticipated. 😂 I’ll admit, I do have fond memories of this movie. But it was last century the last time I watched it. Unfortunately, it didn’t really age too well. Seeing it now as an adult, it seems a little silly. And that’s through the rose colored glasses of nostalgia. I can only imagine what it’s like watching it for the first time as an adult in the present day. Cassie, your reaction is about what I expected. I’m glad you had a few laughs. And I was impressed you got a lot of the references. Especially Planet of the Apes. 👍 Looking forward to the next one!

Robert da Spruce

Bro, live a little.

Wade Watts

This movie is so late to the party, 10 years after SW came out! I'll pass on this one, not worth a reaction from Cassie, just a waste of time IMO.

Joe

I am happy to translate borsht belt humor to Cassie if needed. I speak Mel Brooks

Jim Williams

So yeah, loved this when I was a kid, but seeing it now, doesn’t really hold up…. Still think it was worth you watching since you recently finish the Star Wars series. On another note, just a small gripe but something I’ve noticed… I wish you didn’t turn the movie off immediately after it ends. You sometimes miss some stuff in the credits when you do. In this case you missed that Mel Brooks also had a double role as an actor in the film. Not a big deal, but it would have helped you familiarize yourself with him.

Jeff Milcheck

Now we know not to recommend The Hebrew Hammer (2003) to her for Christmas.

Mike Lemon

😂 I love how all the Jewish humor was totally lost on Cassie! So sweet and innocent! 😇 May the Schwartz Be With You!!

Patrick Gibbs

I got what I wanted, a Canadian Reaction, in Canada with our favorite Canadian, John Candy.

Mr. Killeverything

Not sure why you would only listen to a movie reaction. But most of us, if not all, sync it with our own copy. If she would add sound, we could never get it to sync so precisely to not hear an echo and that would devalue the experience for all other patreons to put it mildly. Not to mention possible copyright issues. You can always listen to the youtube edit, which does have sound.

Pickupthepieces76

Is it possible to have the audio of the movie playing while you react? I purely listen while working. No visual so something is lost when I can’t hear the film and only your reaction

Deth

This and Fanboys are my two favorite Star Wars related films.

David RedEagle

Not the best work by Mel Brooks, but still decently entertaining.

James1035

'Spaceballs' is one of my favorite spoofs, Mel Brooks actually asked George Lucas if it was okay to parody Star Wars and he said yes and even Lucas' company ILM helped with the SFX. I love stupid, zany humor and I think 'Young Frankenstein' should be the next one of Brooks' films.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

The voice of the robot, Dot Matrix, was voiced by comedian Joan Rivers! She’s a Legend!

Jeremy T Edwards

It’s been so long since I’ve watched this, glad you liked it sort of 😂😂 although there was lots of head shaking. I’m sure others will have given you lots of other recommendations for Mel Brooks but I’d recommend you watch Young Frankenstein next, it’s still similar comedy but not as silly as this one. Really looking forward to seeing what you think of A Time to Kill as it’s as far away as you can possibly get from SpaceBalls.

Dean Holt

A lot of pop culture references in this movie that people from that time would get that many probably wouldn't today. For example "Somewhere in the Ford Galaxy" referenced the Ford Galaxie car. Several "Star Trek" references in here as well, the more prominent "Snotty, beam him down" in reference to the character Chief Montgomery "Scotty" Scott as well as the transporter. There was also the Vulcan neck pinch, which "Star Trek's" character Spock frequently used to subdue alien foes. The whole "merchandising" bit was because Mel Brooks contacted George Lucas and asked permission to spoof "Star Wars," to which Lucas agreed so long as no "Spaceballs" merchandise was created to sell. The guy that had the alien pop out of his stomach toward the end of the movie was the same actor (John Hurt) from "Aliens."

Bammer

They're very close.

Stick Figure Studios

My favorite line came from Cassie. Darth Helmet: “Say goodbye to your two best friends!” Cassie: “Who were his two best friends???…… 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂….Well…

Anthony Oberhauser

With Charlton Heston no less.

Stick Figure Studios

They couldn't dress Lone Starr like Han, so they dressed him after Indiana Jones

Rippan

I still haven't seen KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE.

Stick Figure Studios

Just two things I'd like to add.... I forgot how many Star Trek references was this movie and I recommend either version of Planet of the Apes for a further watch. Thanks Cassie. It was funny watching your face and laughs throughout this film. I watch it occasionally but it's only fun because of the references. But I'm glad you watched it.

David Freese

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and BLAZING SADDLES are definitely his top two films (though I give the slight edge to FRANKENSTEIN myself). I agree certain aspects of SADDLES will put her off, but it's still worth watching and she may have done enough westerns now to appreciate it (whereas she may still have to see 1931's FRANKENSTEIN to fully appreciate Brooks's take on it).

Stick Figure Studios

I agree. It’s ridiculous at first, but the more you watch it, the more you catch. My favorite is the Alien / Michigan J Frog gag. But you’d have to be aware of those things to get the joke. Also the recurring merchandising gag. I believe it’s also a bit of a jab at anyone who takes the Star Wars movies a bit too seriously.

Andrew Hogan

Shockingly unfunny.

Carol_White

The robot voice was the late Joan RIvers.

Mike Lemon

It should be pointed out (and I am) that Maverick has been the only Western she has liked so far.

Mike Lemon

I don't think I have ever seen this movie all the way through. The best thing I got out of this reaction watch was a 30 minute nap. Despite what some are telling you, this is a truly awful film. Having this be Cassie's first Mel Brooks films is a travesty and tragedy that ranks right up there with several other misadventures on this channel, such as considering Heat a heist film and watching Maverick as some kind of Best Western. (Be kind guys, I'm saying this in the same vain as this film, I'm just kidding. No, I'm not kidding, this watch was tragedy) :). Since no one pointed it out, and I'm assuming you didn't watch the credits, it was Mel Brooks who played President Schwoob of Spaceball, or whatever his name was, and he also played Yogurt. Brooks often plays multiple roles in his films. Young Frankenstein is NOT Brook's masterpiece, because he didn't also write it, Gene Wilder did, Blazing Saddles was his masterpiece because he did write that one. Cassie should watch both of them some day and forget she ever watched this film.

MikeLL

Just finished the reaction and even though it wasn't a big hit with Cassie, I'm glad that at least some of the jokes made her laugh. I got the feeling she was fully into that super cheesy, fairy tale love story between Lone Starr and Princess Vespa though.😃 Some interesting facts about the movie I remember: - Mel Brooks got a blessing from George Lucas but with one condition: they can't do any merchandising. This is why they squeezed in so much into the movie itself. - Lucas even put up ILM, his effects company created for Star Wars, to make the special effects for the movie - Daphne Zuniga did her own signing in the prison cell scene - Mel Brooks talked John Hurt into doing a short Alien cameo in the movie. He only realized on set that he had to replay his entire Alien chest-burst scene all over again. Cassie, some of the jokes and references you didn't get (like Snotty and the Vulcan neck pinch) were from Star Trek. That end scene was indeed referencing the original from Planet of the Apes movie from 1968. I think you have not seen any of these yet. This first one would indeed be worthy of a reaction, although its sequels (1970-1973) are not that good. But I think you would really enjoy the new trilogy (2011-2017). Story-wise they are independent, but I would suggest watching the 1968 one first.

Gábor Árki

True, he's done better, but he's also done worse.

Stick Figure Studios

No, THIS is Mel Brooks in a nutshell. "Help. I'm in a nutshell. How did I get into this nutshell?"

Stick Figure Studios

Ah, yes, you did watch AIRPLANE, I think I remembered that. One thing, if you'd have kept watching the credits they do a TOP GUN / PREDATOR like cast recap and that would have answered some of your questions in camera as to who was who. :)

Jason Dolan

Not a fan of Rick Moranis??? The guy's an international treasure!!! What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?

Stick Figure Studios

My first Brooks as well. Far from his best, but not his worst either.

Stick Figure Studios

That could actually be pretty funny.

Stick Figure Studios

"One of the worst movies of all time." Nah, not even close.

Stick Figure Studios

I concur with those who recommended Young Frankenstien which is the height of Brook's movies. Blazing Saddles is another great one but I think you'd be put off by parts of the one. Any time we can watch the great John Candy, another Canadian, is fine by me. Great reaction Cassie, I hope you find your way to more Mel Brook's movies.

softshoes

I will say after reading these comments that some people are being a little too dismissive of some of Brooks's more clever and pointedly satirical humor in the film. Yes, a lot of it is just silly puns, slapstick gags and "potty" jokes, but there are also things like it's recurring jabs at overly cynical movie marketing / merchandise and bits like the hilarious extended "When?""Now." exchange that is an homage to the classic Abbot & Costello "Who's on first?" sketch. Sometimes it's so easy to be distracted by the dumb stuff pushing itself in your face that you can miss the smart stuff that's also right in front of you.

Stick Figure Studios

And not his eye-balls.

Jason Dolan

"Who are his two best friends?" Well,..... let's just say they're every guy's two best friends. :-/

Stick Figure Studios

When I saw that you were planning to watch this, I worried it would be more of a NAKED GUN reaction than an AIRPLANE reaction, but I hoped the constant sci-fi references (and in particular STAR WARS) would keep you amused. Looks like I was right. Pleased you enjoyed it. I believe this was my first Mel Brooks movie too. It ain't bad. It's silly fun. Middle -tier Brooks I'd say. Not nearly the movie that YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is (that one's his masterpiece and I recommend it next, though it might help to watch some classic Universal monster movies first... particularly James Whale's FRANKENSTEIN).

Stick Figure Studios

7th grade humor? I was thinking more like 1st grade

Philip G.

Absolutely love this movie. Probably watched it 20 times and I still laugh at new details. I have always laughed at Dark Helmets tie, but today I noticed his shorts... Hilarious! Was never a fan of Rick Moranis, but he is fantastic in this movie. The least "baddie" looking actor you could find, so of course he's perfect for this. Blazing Saddle is Brooks best in my opinion, with History of the World pt. 1 second.

Tobias Eiken

my mom has been pushing for this since last halloween, on my list, thank you!

Cassie

This was probably the first Mel Brooks movie I saw. Maybe why I still enjoy it. Sure, some of his others are much better (and some aren't) but still. I actually consider myself lucky that I'm still able to enjoy movies like this.

Joon S

i love this!!

Cassie

it will be up tonight!

Cassie

I kinda want her to react to the Family Guy parody trilogy.

Andrew Hogan

I love Mel Brooks BUT this was one of the worst movies of all time. 95% of the jokes were just pathetic. “They shot my hair!”???? Brooks movies can be hit or miss. Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles all time classics. Spaceballs a head shaking eye roller bad on so many levels. Try Young Frankenstein for comedy perfection

Mark Harrell

My new favorite reaction. Some of those faces Cassie made were outstanding, lol.

Andrew Hogan

I won't be surprised if you don't like this since you didn't like THE NAKED GUN, weren't even able to finish it... I forget if you watched AIRPLANE! This is a very specific kind of humor that doesn't always translate.

Jason Dolan

Silly movie… not popcorn worthy

N M

"Potty humor" pretty much sums up Mel Brooks. I appreciate his sense of humor, and he's done some fine work. But I have to be in the mood for it, and even then I don't think I've ever watched a full movie of his. Like "Airplane" et al, great subject matter for movie quotes, but nothing I'd want as one of the "just five things" I could have if stranded on a deserted island.

Nathan

If you liked the movie, check out other mel Brooks parody movies: History of the World Part1, Robin Hood-Men in Tights, Dracula-Dead and Loving it, Young Frankenstein

Daniel Fuchs

If you choose to check out more Mel Brooks movies, there are several which I'm sure will get highly recommended. But I'm going to stick to just one, and that's Young Frankenstein. Easily one of my all-time favorite movies, and just a brilliant piece of filmmaking. Plus, the comedy is more classic, less "potty humor" :)

Patrick Egan

Exactly how I felt about... I'm not a fan of the 7th grade potty mouth humor, so this movie missed completely with me. I thought it sophomoric at best and really never understood the love for it. It doesn't help that I was already an adult when it came out. I suppose if I first watched it at 9 or 10 I might still find it tolerable. Then again, I first saw Kentucky Fried Movie at 10 years old and thought it hysterical, but I couldn't get past 5 minutes of it when I tried to watch it recently.

Art of Free Speech

Mel Brooks' To Be or Not to Be is a pleasant movie, and I thought it was really impressive how he worked in the gay character to highlight another act of oppression during the war, but the original is the masterpiece. Silent Movie is pretty underrated.

Tyler Foster

It’s fun to just laugh sometimes. Watching you laugh always lifts my spirits. This is good to have in the library for rough days. Know I can play this and laugh along with you!!

Steven Ashford

This was one of those first time movie experiences for me that I still remember vividly today. I was somewhere between 10-12 and we spent some time at my grandparent's summer house near a lake. One night this movie was on. My parents and grandparents hated it and stopped watching, but I was laughing and smiling so hard that my face literally started to hurt. I wasn't even aware of Star Wars back then, I just thought it was hilariously funny. The one genre my parents can't stand is sci-fi, ironically it turned out to be my favorite ever since my late teens and this might have been one of the first influences on that. Of course, it all got a whole different meaning a few years later after I discovered Star Wars on a loan VHS, not to mention seeing it without a dub after learning English I realized how much pop culture references they simply didn't understand or couldn't translate. So I know for me this movie is very much a nostalgia trip, but I just can't stop still liking it.

Gábor Árki

Spaceballs is Freaking fantastic AND hilarious. A true classic. Y'all are dummmmmmB....

Diiirk706

I'm worried she saw the first ten minutes and cut it off. 😬

William Bryan

Mel Brooks got permission from Lucasflims to spoof Star Wars! What an opportunity! Yet it seemed like he got his grandchildren to help him write the jokes. I'm not saying it had to be R rated but "Pizza the Hut"? [cringe]

Prof. Writhms

I guess she's saving the best for last.

Michael Lynch

If you enjoyed this might I recommend the following? "The Producers" (1967) "Blazing Saddles" (1974) "Young Frankenstein" (1974) "Silent Movie" (1976) "High Anxiety" (1977) "History of the World, Part I" (1981) and "To Be or Not To Be" (1983, as well as the original from 1942)

Jake McNulty

Is "A Time To Kill" still coming?

Benny50309

This came before A Time To Kill?

William Bryan

Mel Brooks made some real funny movies. Unfortunately this one fell a little short.

nick bell

HAIL SCROOBE!! SCROOBE THE PEOPLE! Mel Brooks is so FUNNY! 🤣

Matthew Dunham

Mel Brooks in a nutshell lol
