Rush - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Here is my reaction to Rush - my PPOTM! Man this was a great story! There really is something special about a sports movie I'm finding. I loved the storytelling of it, the juxtaposition of the two main characters and racing is freaking intense!! Hope you enjoy!

Excellent reaction.

This might have been mentioned before but another great movie in the "racing true story" category is: The World's Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins.

Alexis

After Ford vs Ferrari and this, I think at some point you should check out Senna, it's a documentary but really well done. Just something to consider for some point in the future.

Stephen

I didn't know anything about this movie or story. I don't know much about racing. But, this was a good movie and story. Great reaction, Cassie. Thanks for introducing me to this movie. I would not have watched it on my own. Now you have me watching movies that I wouldn't normally watch. And I am enjoying it.

Rick Williams

Cassie since you have been liking sports movies you really need to check out “Miracle” with Kurt Russsell.

Late, but random fact, I had the rare privilege of hearing one of Niki Lauda's formula cars at Griots Garage in Tacoma Washington rev to the moon. And sorry but it was orgasmic.

David RedEagle

Also my 1st time seeing this thank you if not for your channel I may have missed it. It's funny how different it feels when I don't know the outcome and I am on the edge of my seat with you.

Sam R.

As a life long F1 fan it was great to join along with you on this one. James and Nikki are legends of the sport, with James going on to become in commentary legend for the BBC. Nikki retired after a couple more championships and started an airline, he also co chaired the AMG Mercedes Petronas F1 team and coached Lewis Hamilton to 6 world championships before his untimely death due to lung complications from accident. Since his death in 2019 the Mercedes F1 cars have run a red star sticker on their cars in honour of Nikki! That Ron Howard can definitely direct a movie, he’s definitely on to good things. One to watch!

Biggman83

I must say, when the championship race saw rain, I was expecting a Cassie repeat line from all of her Jurassic Park reactions: “Have they learned nothing???!!!???”

Lamar Smith

I have to agree with Doug about Brian's song plus a nice tribute to James Caan

Jim Williams

This movie is so visually accurate to the footage we have. For instance when Hunt passes Lauda in a turn while behind some trees. It's exactly how it was shown on TV. They really went very far to as authentic as possible.

Yann Laliberté

I know you have had this request many times but a guaranteed Cassie sports movie is Brian's Song.

Doug R

I watched the full reaction and it was awesome.. My only point is that in the YT version the summation points in the movie, Jame Hunts death etc, isn't visible. You may want to read these aloud Cassie!!

David

Great reaction Cassie! I’m a big F1 fan, so I particularly enjoyed this reaction. Niki was quite the character. Never shy about telling you exactly what he thinks. And still very active in F1 until his death in 2019. Although the movie portrayed them as bitter rivals. Which was true during those few years in F1, Niki and James were also friendly then they showed. They were actually roommates for a time during their Formula 3 days. Anyways, I enjoyed the reaction! Looking forward to the next one!

At the top of the F1 food chain are the racing teams. The groups that enter multiple cars in each race. On paper, these two or more drivers, driving ‘identical’ cars whose paint schemes are matching SHOULD be working together to achieve the best results for the team. I’m recalling seeing a particular race in the NF series that must have given team managers and owners collective heartburn of biblical proportions. Two identical cars alone on their particular section of the racetrack. Managers TOLD one rookie driver to let the veteran who had just put new tires on in a pit to let his teammate go by. The rookie decides he knows better, races him and……. They BOTH wreck and are BOTH out of the race.

Lamar Smith

This is all based on knowledge gained from the Netflix series and from memory. 20 F1 cars start every race. Top 10 finishes only gain points toward an overall season total. Hunt didn’t need to win the race, once Niki withdrew, just finish, I believe, 3rd to accrue enough points for the season to win the Championship. Going back to my earlier post about not caring overall about speed but where you finish each race, totally, ridiculously, theoretically and hypothetically, you could enter each race in a golf cart and if you, ridiculously, managed to finish in the top ten, you’d have a great season. You couldn’t, of course, but it’s not the speed of the car but where you finish that decides the championship. To answer the question you posed in FvF and again here, it’s BOTH the car and the driver. From watching NF F1, a common rookie mistake is to drive too aggressively and wind up A) wrecking the car and B) Not finishing. Calling a driver ‘good’ or ‘the best’ isn’t automatically calling him ‘the fastest’ on any lap. ‘The best’ driver finishes the race, attacks when it’s time to attack, backs off when it’s time to backs off and doesn’t wreck the race car.

Lamar Smith

Please, please, please, Dearest Cassie, even though it absolutely, positively is NOT a word, do not EVER stop saying ‘race car-ing.’ The world first heard this Cassie-ism in ‘FvF’ and I had the misfortune of processing this term mid-swig and needed a handful of paper towels after. ‘Race car-ing’ and asking if Le Mans drivers “Have snacks?” is, in a microcosm, what makes you and this channel unique and perfect.

Lamar Smith

In watching the scene when Niki sets up the Ferrari to run faster than Clay’s car with Clay at both wheels and on Cassie’s comment “I can’t comprehend the speed!” In watching the Netflix F1 series so many have recommended, watching long enough you come away that, to be sure, is all about speed, but the observation I come away with is that far more than speed, the obsession is with time. When communicating from the pit to the driver, crews will say, “You’re X.Y seconds back from so-and-so.” You don’t hear them ever say “Drive faster!” I’m not even sure those cars have speedometers in them. While, of course, speed is a factor, teams, with their word choices, mention time and place relative to the other drivers (“We finished in X place.” “We’re two places ahead of that team,” etc.) far more than speed. They do say “We’re running 1.5 seconds faster/lap than them.” You don’t hear “We’re 5 mph faster than that other guy.”

Lamar Smith

Niki just passed in the last couple of years. Apparently, even in his dotage, he was still active as an advisor on the Ferrari F1 team. Never one to sugarcoat his opinions or fail to call BS when he saw it. He was truly a character and remained so to his last breath.

Lamar Smith

Finally a racing film! 🏎 Great content! As mentioned bt others above, I recommend more Daniel Brühl films such as Goodbye Lenin! 😋

Snöffe

Thank you for typing out basically what i wanted to say.. This is a solid outline

Wirenfeldt Jr

Wild 2014. Cheryl Strayed's memoir. You don´t need sports or medals to be a legend.

SOG78

I wonder if we will ever get a great sports movie based on real life about a woman athlete or team. Maybe that late 90s us women soccer team or Rhonda Rousy. But my dad remembers these racers to this day. When the biggest female earners/celeb of our time our like Kardashians, Jenners and Rihanna as well as the fact that no gf or coworker of mine is big fans of any professional female athlete or team I doubt it. Was hoping Carli Lloyd would have tried out for kicking for an NFL team because that could been a great movie one day.

Sean Stuart

Great reaction I think you felt what the directors wanted to feel. I think you have seen most of the great sports movies but Mystery Alaska and Cinderella Man

Sean Stuart

I know this is not a movie but if you want to watch an inspirational sports documentary "Survive and Advance" from the ESPN 30 for 30 series is amazing.

Doug R

One of my favorites Cassie. Glad you enjoyed it. Lauda to come back after his accident was truely inspiring. Very much a true story from Niki's determination to James wild ways. Both actors were great in their roles.

Canadianant

They are Brilliant!

Keith Jones

Glad you you enjoyed this one, Cassie. This movie holds a certain sentimental value for me and is one of the best that Ron Howard (Far and Away, Apollo 13, and Solo) has directed. For me, it's the best out of my three favorite racing/motorsports movies. The other two are Days of Thunder (1990) and Ford v Ferrari (2019). I watched the latter after seeing the "The 24 Hour War" documentary on Netflix, which I thought was great. If you haven't done so yet, you should try the Sour Patch Strawberry. Pretty good stuff. Cheers!

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

I think Bull Durham would be suitable as well. Sports movie, Kevin costner, love story. Right up Cassie's alley. Do not remember too much about The Natural.

Brian McGovern

"The ' vette , gets 'em ...." well, let's leave that blank shall we. In the interests of good taste. 👍

Brian McGovern

Hi Cassie if you are liking these car movies and interested in learning more, you might want to check out episodes of the UK version of Top Gear (when hosted by Clarkson, May, and Hammond) and Amazon’s The Grand Tour. You wouldn’t be able to do a reaction really, but you might find them a lot of fun just to watch for yourself. The three hosts have a lot fun and they talk about racing and all kinds of cars. They have great senses of humor and they get to do all kinds of cool things on the show. The show got so popular, that they were able to attract actors like Tom Cruise to be guests. I’m not much of a car person myself and saw Top Gear for the first time when visiting the Uk and I fell in love. It might just be the best reality tv show I’ve ever watched.

Tinkerbell

Great reaction video as always really glad you liked this one. Both Rush and Ford V Ferrari are a couple of my favourite movies. And being an Motorsport fan (mainly Formula One) for about 35 years I was a bit surprised just how much I liked both of them. The first couple of seasons of Drive to survive are pretty good, but the last couple in my opinion are over dramatised. But it’s has helped the sport get a bit more popular, so can’t complain to much. There’s a Formula One documentary just called 1 that’s very good, I’d also recommend Senna, Williams and Uppity.

Dean Holt

Another sports movie you should watch is the Natural. It’s a baseball movie with a love story.

Alex Gorell

Rush is a wonderfully written true story, I was old enough to be watching these races live on TV. After the accident Nikki was back to racing in , I think, just under 30 days, think of that today with those injuries, we would have expected them to be out for at least a year, the passion and dedication for their sport was incredible, we will never see the like of it again.

David Williams

You should just go ahead and give it a chance. It's a really good movie

Michael Lynch

Formula One is part of whats called "single seater" or "open wheel" racing. It's been around since the 50's. Theres a ton of similar junior level formulas that most F1 guys go through until they get to F1. IndyCar would also be single seater but its specific to North America On the other hand you have sports cars / GT racing, where the cars are high performance sports cars / supercars (Ferrari's, McLarens etc), but are modified for racing. Some leagues have amateur drivers & professionals competing together (Michael Fassbender does this for Porsche). These are the cars that compete in the likes of Le Mans. There are various grades of sports cars from lightly modified production cars to exotic prototypes. In Lauda's era it wasn't unusual for drivers to compete across different racing leagues & formula NASCAR is very much its own thing. During the prohibition era, bootleggers smuggling illegal booze modified their cars to look normal, or “stock”, to deceive police, hence the term "stock car racing". Eventually men did what they always do in vehicles and started racing each other You also have Rallying, where beefed up versions of hatchback and sedan cars race, not on circuits, but through time trial stages on everything from actual roads to forests & deserts - usually sideways or airborne. There's also motorbikes but those guys are utterly insane, Have a look at the Isle of Man TT to see what I mean

John Drake

I second about invictus, that is agood one, and i bet carly will loveit too!

salim alvarez

I suspected Cassie would enjoy it. Overall I think Ford v Ferrari is slightly better, maybe due to its emotional affect on the viewer and the very likeable character of Ken Miles. But Rush is a very good one too, showing a great rivalry among two drivers and how it pushed them to be the best they can. This is the best Formula 1 movie made so far. Not that there were too many. I can only think of one more, Grand Prix (1966), starring James Garner. Even though I no longer follow it, I still have fond childhood memories about Formula 1. Watching the races was a family event for us for a long time every second/third Sunday afternoon during the season. My brother and parents still watch it every time. Although I was born in the '80s and mainly familiar with drivers from the '90s (Senna, Schumacher, Hakkinen), I also remember seeing Niki Lauda quite a lot. He never stopped participating even after he didn't race anymore. He was frequently interviewed by many TV stations, became technical advisor, television commentator, etc. It is a strange thing for me too, because I'm not really into sports but I was always very fond of sports movies and usually find them very inspiring and often make me very emotional in a good way. I would end my comment with two suggestions: Invictus (2009) It's an inspiring and true story of how newly elected President Nelson Mandela helps to unite their country through sport after the fall of the Apartheid. Starring Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon and directed by Clint Eastwood. During the last decade this turned out to be my go to feel good, uplifted and better about the world sports movie. Good Bye Lenin! (2003) After the fall of the Iron Curtain and the unification of Germany, a young man is trying to protect his fragile mother waking up from a long coma, by keeping the illusion that her beloved nation of East Germany still exists. It is starring Daniel Brühl and probably his best known German film. Cassie, if you dive back into foreign films, this is worth having on your radar.

Gábor Árki

Great reaction all around..

David

Haven't seen this one and, frankly, wasn't especially interested to (just not a big fan of Ron Howard's uninspired filmmaking in the latter half of his career), so I'll probably skip this reaction and just watch the YT edit. Glad that you enjoyed it though. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

When you need an inspirational sports movie watch Miracle

Doug R

IMO, if she's going to go watch racing live, she ought to just buy a nice set of earplugs and find a local race track. I grew up on Long Island going to Islip Motor Speedway and Riverhead Raceway. There's just something much more fun about the local racing. I've also been to big Nascar and Indy car races, but it doesn't have the same charm, at least to me.

Art of Free Speech

As far as sports movies you should watch invincible and miracle. Two incredible movies.

Michael Lynch

Well that was fun. Broke out the big words, had to look that up!😂 170 mph is 273km per hour. Have you lived in the states long enough to do mph pretty easily now? Just wondering. You should go out to a track and go on a test drive with a professional driver. I know you would be a nervous wreck but you would really get a feel for the speed. Would make a great reaction video too, wink wink 😉 There is also funny car racing, also known as drag racing. That’s fastest time to 1/4 mile between two cars. Burn victims have to be scrubbed several times a day, Anesthesis not realistic. But I’m sure they’ve got them on the most pain meds they can. You got really excited about the mile high club. Uhh Cassie?! I’m a pilot still not a part of that club. Finally since you love sports movies so much and I know it’s been suggested 1000 times miracle on ice. Oh my gosh you’re from Canada and it’s about hockey come on!!! Have a great day!

Steven Ashford

This is on my Netflix here in the States. Thanks for reacting to this.

MikeLL

And one of the best tv shows ever made.

TommyJ.

I’ve always like sports movies more than actual sports.

Mr Trick

Great reaction as always, and Rush really is a great movie. Ron Howard didn't get nearly the respect or notoriety for it that he deserved back when it was released, and it unfortunately kind of flew under the radar at the box office here in the states. It of course did far better internationally than it did domestically. As someone else mentioned, you might want to check out Days of Thunder at some point as well. Might want to bring Carly in on it as well considering the whole recent Tom Cruise/Top Gun: Maverick infatuation she's currently going through. :)

Brian Jones

Awesome! I can't wait to get back home and watch it later today.

Michael Lynch

What a fantastic movie. Ron Howard really knew what he was doing when he made this. I actually saw him at a NASCAR race at Indianapolis in 2011. At the time he was doing a documentary called “The Crossing” with driver Jeff Gordon. So he’s obviously a pretty big racing fan and gave this story the amount of respect it was deserved, which is a hard thing to get from Hollywood sometimes. So when are you going to get out to see a NASCAR or F1 race Cassie? 😁

Josh Phillips

Growing up Nikki was one of my favorites. He was involved in F1 his entire life. Check out a short YouTube clip of the actor that played Nikki about his meeting with the real man before they shot the movie. Very funny story.

Doug R

For a good podcast about speedy race cars, listen to SHIFT+F1 over at https://f1.cool and enjoy. They have a pre-season primer episode you can listen to that assumes no prior F1 knowledge and introduces the rules, teams, drivers, ongoing drama.

Christopher Smith

Dearest Cassie, might I, in all gentleness, point out that ‘Friday Night Lights’ is both a sports movie AND a true story? I’m just saying.

Lamar Smith

You’re right that it’s a combination of a good driver and a good car, but an “iffy driver” shouldn’t be anywhere near a formula one car. It’s the scariest 4 wheel sport in the world. You really should watch the Netflix series Drive to Survive. You will love it, I promise you.

djKENTO

You'll recognize the difference between the Corolla and the Corvette because the Vette will scare you or excite you one of the two.. :P

Andrew Rose

OK, The Art of Racing in the Rain should be your next race movie, then Days of Thunder after that!

Craig Russell

Great word. I first heard it during photography practical, theory and analysis class 24 years ago.

Daryl

Haven’t seen this one yet, excited to give it a try. Maybe you should do another racing movie, Days of Thunder. It’s basically Top Gun in a race car!

Peter Guertin

Well I guess I'm learning a new word today... (Googles juxtaposition)
