Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Full Reaction

Wweeellll that got cray pretty fast! I don't want to spoil anything,  but certain characters broke my heart, the creatures were way too weird, but I do love Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel McAdam's ❤️ the tone seemed kind of different in this? it's always fun to watch a movie with Carly and we had the craziest thunderstorm during this!

Also, so sorry for the lack of audio quality, hopefully you can still get the gist of our reaction. I didn't plug the mic in all the way and didn't realize until after. So sorry!!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Full Reaction

Comments

I love this movie, I think it sets up a solo Scarlet Witch movie perfectly. This was an homage to super hero movie lovers from the original X-men and Fantastic 4 days. Plus Raimi put his classic horror fingerprints all over it. You gotta respect what they did with everything here, at least I do.

JohnnyUtah

Hey Magnus! Sorry for the late reply, but it's working now!

Cassie

Hey sorry for the delay, but it's up now!

Cassie

Any chance this will get re-uploaded?

Magnus Thor Magnusson

Would love for this one to be moved over to YouTube eventually. Can’t access it on Vimeo anymore.

I can only go by what you post, and everything I've seen you post on Marvel is negative. Bottom line: I just don't have the same problem with Marvel that you do.

Richard Maurer

"Maybe talk about what you like more often if you don't want to be labeled a hater." - Better yet, maybe try not assuming up front that someone you know virtually nothing about is a "hater" just because you disagree with them. Just a thought. I believe in honesty Richard. And when a good portion of the fanbase as well as critics are taking notice of the slippage in the franchise, simply writing it off as "haters" doesn't carry much credibility these days. There's a reason you're seeing disagreements more and more regarding the Marvel properties in the online sphere. We are long past the days of where the fanbase was united around Marvel. The same is happening in Star Wars fandom as well. The same thing will happen with any franchise when it's clearly missing the mark.

Brian Jones

I will say that your opinion on DS2 negates it for me, I did mean objectively for everyone. As for you liking some things post Endgame, I wouldn't know that because every post I've seen of yours only mentions how bad Marvels been post Endgame. Maybe talk about what you like more often if you don't want to be labeled a hater.

Richard Maurer

"the fact that you think this Dr. Strange was bad just negates everything you say about Marvel." - Why Richard? Simply because it's an opinion you don't agree with? The box office for this phase, as well as the viewership on Disney+ have both reflected that the excitement for Marvel is losing it's luster, especially with Thor and The Eternals. You can rage against reality all you like, but the facts are what they are. The numbers are falling off for Marvel, albeit slowly, but they are falling off. The universe is living on borrowed time due to the good faith of the films that came before it. Hence why you see a ton of excitement for opening weekends and then a drastic falloff in box-office the second and third week. It won't stop them from making close to a billion on many of their established characters, but it's a diminishing return overall, and I've already explained the obvious reasons. "In this and other comment sections you constantly badmouth everything they do since Endgame" - Not at all. I've commented that the Spiderman film was pretty amazing. I was also quite fond of WandaVision, but sadly it's the last really creative thing Disney/Marvel has done. Loki started out OK, but then fell flat by the end. Hawkeye did the same by kind of screwing the pooch on the finale. It's kind of becoming a pattern for them at this point. Do you just automatically label someone a "hater" if they express an opinion that you don't like? Even when said opinion reflects actual reality?

Brian Jones

I'm sorry, but the fact that you think this Dr. Strange was bad just negates everything you say about Marvel. In this and other comment sections you constantly badmouth everything they do since Endgame, and I don't see it that way. You're just being a hater for some reason.

Richard Maurer

It wasn't "setting a bar", it was simply having good writers and directors. Something Marvel has been sorely missing since the Russo Brothers and Markus and McFeely left the fold. They were responsible for the biggest hits Marvel ever had. And once they lose Gunn after guardians 3, they will have pretty much lost all their high caliber talent. Taika Waititi sure as hell isn't going to save them. He just shit the bed royally on the new Thor film and basically turned the entire MCU into a parody of itself with a single film. Unless Feige makes some major changes soon the franchise is going to slowly collapse. It's already living on the barrowed time of the films that came before this phase.

Brian Jones

Black Bolt is an Inhuman, they were created by the Kree as an experiment on humans, Mrd. Marvel is also an Inhuman from the comics. There was a series called inhumans and the actor is the same.

Jayson Phillips

And I have to hard disagree with you, but to each their own. As for the MCU after Endgame, setting that high a mark is unrealistic. It took time and a lot of movies to build to Endgame, and very few of those movies were near the level of Endgame. Yet all those movies were important in building the narrative that led to Endgame. I personally have enjoyed all the movies since Endgame to varying degrees, with even my least favorite (Eternals) being at least watchable. I will say however that they are missing a unifying movie -ala The Avengers - that would help tie these various movies together. Hopefully something along those lines will appear soon.

Richard Maurer

Hard disagree..... I actually think it get's worse with every re-watch. There's so much wrong it's not really even worth getting into, so if you enjoyed it, more power to you. In my personal opinion Marvel has been missing the mark on everything since Endgame, and this entire phase of movies has been pretty mediocre at best, and downright awful at worst.

Brian Jones

The first time I watched this movie I was a little disappointed. I've now watched it four times including two with reactors (Cassie and Natalie Gold) - I love this movie. This movie has become one of my top tier MCU movies, and it gets better every time I have watched it. I recommend repeated viewing for those with a open mind as you see more with every viewing. Many people seem to think Wanda "turned" to evil, like she had a choice. The only chance she had was to not read the Darkhold, once she started it was too late. Think of the Darkhold as being like the One Ring in LotR, except much faster acting. The fact that through Wanda's love for her children she was able to overcome the corruption from the Darkhold made her the true hero of the movie, in the end.

Richard Maurer

I wasn't a big fan of this one, overall. But it did give us a live-action version of Captain Carter(seen in animated form in the What If? series), and Hayley Atwell looked SO FREAKING COOL as Captain Carter!

Patrick Egan

I sure as heck hope so, that was my first thought when she said she's never seen X-Men!

Patrick Egan

Very weird and dark movie. Didn't care for it. I don't like where they have taken the MCU. All the original heroes are gone or soon Will be the way things are going.

Rick Williams

As far as if anyone loved this movie: it me. Of course, I'm a big fan of the director(Sam Raimi)'s horror movies, so this was a bkast for me. It's definitely a wild swing of a movie, and I can easily see how it's a miss for some people, but it’s probably one of my favorite MCU films(and definitely my favorite Sam Raimi superhero movie).

sarCC

It's in the bottom three MCU movies for me, yet still manages to be better than half the DC movies I've seen.

Colin Gutierrez

Hey Cassie, I was wondering. Have you seen The Eternals yet? not sure if you ever mentioned it.

Jesus Garcia

Agree.

Jason Chirevas

This movie is a mess, they wreck Wanda as a character, Strange has virtually no real arc in his own movie, they botch the introduction of significant new characters and the through-lines from the first movie are tenuous at best, downright non-existent at worst. To paraphrase Forrest Gump; “That’s all I’ve got to say about that.”

Mr Trick

horrible movie. Marvel completely jumped the shark with this one. with this and next Thor...this was probably the last marvel for me

Ryan

I may watch the YT edit. I used to get giddy with excitement when a new Marvel movie came out, now not so much. I am giddy with excitement to begin watching the latest season of Peaky Blinders. Totally fanboyed that show to the level of buying the caps and attempting a brummie accent. Tom Hardy's portrayal of Alfie Solomon in that show is an order of magnitude better than anything he's ever done. Astonishingly brilliant. And while I'm at it, I was blown away with how great the latest season of Stranger Things was. The production values are superb.

Michael Threapleton

One of the reasons this film had such dark, even horrific elements, was that it was directed by Sam Raimi. Raimi got his start with horror classics Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness (ok, the last two were more horror/comedies that straight up horror). The pizza vendor was his best friend, and star of the three films I just named, Bruce Campbell. Campbell and Raimi have both spoken on numerous occasions about what delight Raimi gets in torturing Campbell on film, which is what the self abuse is referring to (particularly a reference to Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness). Raimi has a very unique visual style and that definitely came through in this movie.

Just Plain Bob

MCU does their take on a genre now and again. Coming of age, scifi comedy, spy/thriller for example and this was their take on the horror genre. Probably not too much of a surprise to the people familiar with the director. I enjoyed it well enough, but it was probably too tame for horror fans and too much for more standard superhero fans. With people also expecting something else with the title, I think this all makes the movie not too popular with the bigger audience.

Pickupthepieces76

I think the character arc of Wanda has been one of the more interesting of all the Avengers. Especially since it's not the standard, learns lessons and saves the day as complete person. but actually slowly slips away from the hero she was. I think she will be redeemed at some point. She slayed a number of people, but they could write it off as she was posessed and the real Wanda was stuck away deep in her mind.

Pickupthepieces76

The first time I watched this I was unsure how I felt about it. I don't read the comics, but I wasn't expecting this much darkness. Now I've watched it a couple more times, and I've come to love it. Yes, it's weird but I can appreciate Raimi's direction and influence.

Reece Coventree

Do you plan on checking out the X-Men movies after this?

Adam Grunther

Direct Message to Carly: You asked if anyone loved this movie? I did. This is top ten MCU for me. And I'm sure that's controversial, but Wanda is my favorite character so I hold every film she appears in, in high regard, and I felt this movie successfully did the Anakin Skywalker tempted to the Dark Side to become Darth Vader arc brilliantly with what she lost in Infinity War, to her coping with it in WandaVision and then succumbing to the Dark Side(Hold) in Multiverse of Madness. I'm also a huge Sam Raimi fan, going back to his Evil Dead trilogy, to Darkman and A Simple Plan (the only Sam Raimi film I would recommend to you and Cassie going foward) and his Spider-Man trilogy and Wizard of Oz prequel. Raimi is a particular taste, like Tim Burton, Wes Anderson or the Coen Brothers. You either like that style, or you don't. I'm not sure if you guys have seen/liked the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, so that's why I feel like this movie is sillier and quirkier than other MCU movies - but also, this movie is a horror movie and it is all about The Evil Dead as people joked this movie was actually just Evil Dead 4, and the guy who played the pizza ball proprietor was the star of the Evil Dead trilogy and makes cameos in the Spider-Man trilogy as well - they are longtime friends and collaborators. But yes, to answer your question, I enjoy this movie more and more with every rewatch. I think most of the "hate" this movie gets is from people who didn't get the movie they wanted, which is a tough fete when you have a fanbase of millions, you can't make everyone happy. This movie still made $950M though and that's good enough to be 8th all time MCU domestic and 11th all time worldwide, and it would have broken a billion easily if they hadn't put it on Disney+ 45 days after release. It's still in the weekly top ten movies this past weekend! Also, I think you guys like the SCI-FI part of the MCU more than the mystical magical side? That might be what it is, because there have been weird monsters in the MCU dating back to the first THOR and AVENGERS movie. So I think it is the Harry Potterness in the MCU that didn't appeal to you! There's a part in the movie though where you both clearly dialed out and gave up on the movie, and I get that - sometimes a movie just loses me and it's hard to keep going but then you finish it. A couple of MCU movies have done that to me. SHANG CHI was one of those movies. Like it, didn't love it. But for the most part, an overall solid series of 20+ films, haha. Last thing, I think it'll be a while before we see the X-Men but Cassie is correct, they are going to use the multiverse to introduce them, probably Wolverine first, and then we'll just see a new actor in that role - like Taron Egerton.

Jason Dolan

I went back and watched this just because of your comment. The thunderstorm was epic. Definitely small hail mixed in with that rain. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect!!

Steven Ashford

It's getting a lot of hate, but I enjoyed it well enough. Sort of "Sam Raimi's greatest hits."

Stick Figure Studios

Good question. I always thought that the alternate timelines & universes are basically the same thing in the MCU since they keep using them interchangeably. I dunno man :D

Petteri Ahlberg

So this movie was directed by a guy named Sam Raimi, who also directed the Tobey Macguire Spider-Man movies, and he got his start making weird, dark horror comedies that had a very unique and original style to them, and this was defiantly more in line with that, like the zombie Strange and the way Wanda looked and the way the souls talked, it all screamed Sam Raimi, he really has one of those styles that kind of overtakes the entire movie

M&M

Does the mcu even know what's going on with the multiple timelines and universes. In Loki it's shown that in different timelines you have variants of yourself. But they do not look like you. But in alternative universes the other you looks like you? I would think it would be the other way around. Where as in one universe all the different timelines look like you they just chose different paths and in completely different universes we'd have the stranger versions of ourselves. I'm going cross-eyed now so I'll stop

Philip G.

This was my first time watch, I just didn't feel the need to watch this in theater. After finally seeing it, I have mixed feeling. I am glad they at least went a bit beyond the usual MCU formula and gave us a bit darker take and overall I was kind of entertained. But on the other side I very much feel like Cassie and Carly and didn't like multiple things here. First of all, I didn't like they made Wanda a plain out villain with only a tiny hint towards that it was not really her. I enjoyed her character so far very much but I feel they might have taken her beyond redemption this time for me. Other than that I'm having my usual problems. I still don't see where is the MCU heading now. All just feels so pointless. Despite an entire movie has just been added I don't think we have taken any step further in a larger story and all I'm left with is even more questions. Is this even the same multiverse as in Loki (The more I think about it the less I feel like it)? So what the hell happened with Strange at the end, was that good or bad? Who is Charlize Theron at the end, should I even know her? Not seen What If, Eternals, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms Marvel yet, maybe it is explained there. I feel Phase 4 just doesn't work for me anymore. Apart from feeling all the stories a bit aimless and made for the sake of making more content, they are introducing so many new characters that it makes really hard to remember and keep everything in mind. Not even mentioning the fact they are kind of channeling entire, so far standalone franchises to the MCU like X-Men with their two dozen movies, the Fantastic Four, the Netflix Defender series, etc. But even if I put this aside and they make it in a way only a very superficial knowledge is enough the sheer amount of new content they produce now requires a level of commitment to keep up to date is just getting too much for me. So far it was enough to watch 2, maybe 3 movies tops per year to keep you up to track. Now, you have to watch 3-4 movies per year and 3-4-5 seasons of Disney+ series. And as this movie just proved, you cannot skip or cherry pick from those. Anyone who has not seen Wandavision was pretty much lost what the heck is happening in this movie. So overall I don't feel what we are getting out of these stories is warranting the level of commitment it requires from us. Cassie, you were right, Patrick Stewart playing Professor X is also well known for his other famous role: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) and starting with seventh feature film Star Trek Generations (1994).

Gábor Árki

One way to look at Wanda in Doctor Strange is that this is what happened to Anakin, seduced by the Dark Side, becoming the Scarlett Vader. Pretty genius what they've done with Wanda in the MCU - she is my favorite overall character. Best arc. from Age of Ultron to Multiverse of Madness.

Jason Dolan

Jiminy Cricket! 😳 I was watching this movie for the first time along with you guys. And uh….That was weird. It’s like they tried to cram a dozen different movies into one. Definitely not one of my favorite Marvel films. And can we talk about the storm that hit your house. Holy Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Batman! 😉 That was pretty crazy! Nice reaction. The movie…meh. Not my favorite. Happy 4th everyone!

Robert da Spruce

wanda is my favorite Marvel Character , but not in this movie . worst marvel movie by far .

zynjams

Holy crap, the best part of this one was the real life rain starting right when they were going under the river. Reminds me of watching the Burbs on VHS when I was a kid and the lightning outside perfectly synced up to the movie for a second. So fun.

tiny baby kitty man

To answer Carly's question yes I really enjoyed it. I haven't been a fan of most of the recent marvel movies but this one is easily my favorite since the first doctor strange movie. and I do like where the MCU is heading I enjoy the darker more disturbing aspect of this one.

Alex Gorell

Except that Thanos wasn't the clear enemy until after The Avengers and the end of phase 1. Sure you can look back now and see his influence behind the scenes, but it wasn't apparent until then. I'll admit that phase 4 is a bit clunky. The only common thread is that everyone is still dealing with the consequences of Infinity War and Endgame. Feige has recently said though it will be obvious who the threat is by the end of phase 4.

Marty McGee

She saw it in theatre and did a reaction, but is waiting for streaming to release.

Cole Jennett

My personal opinion: some don't like this phase, because in the original series of films, they were introducing new characters, and building a team... So far (since endgame) they are either evolving old characters, or introducing new characters, with no clear team, leader, or point... The casual viewer is getting fatigued, and disappointed. The old formula worked, for a reason. There was also an element of one continuous common enemy (Thanos) who was a puppet master behind almost everything. The 'heros' evolved, character-wise, as well as moving towards each other... Again, to fight a common enemy. Some might argue who that new phase enemy might be... But in the older movies, it was made more clear. Just my opinion...

Jon Johns

Definitely an Ash Easter egg!

Mark Sylvester

Super hero movies peaked with Superman (1978), and that's where it should have ended. Now it is just pretty people in front of a green screen and lots of CGI.

Beau Mont

I was really surprised when I first saw this in theaters that they flat out made Wanda the villain. And when it was over, I just hoped that she was killed at the end and I would never see her again, because I thought she was an unsympathetic character, in contrast to the sympathetic character she was in WandaVision. On seeing this again for the second time with the gals, I see that she was under the influence of the Darkhold possibly, so there is a chance for redemption in the future, because I know well with Marvel how they like to bring characters back. I just overall enjoyed the perplexed look Cassie had on her face all throughout the movie, it seemed to be she was thinking "What in the world am I watching?" Just another pleasant reaction.

MikeLL

For Carly and Cassie. Avengers. X-Men. Fantastic Four. Blade. Ghost rider. Daredevil. Punisher. A few other Netflix shows, Agents Of Shield, and a few other movies here and there are all Marvel properties. The movie rights were sold to studios back in the 90’s to keep Marvel from going completely bankrupt. Those deals have ended over the ensuing years or Marvel bought the rights back in some cases. So, other than Spider-Man (Sony studios) and Hulk (Universal studios), all their other properties are now part of Marvel / Disney. So they can combine all these characters in the movies, but now they have to explain why the other entities haven’t been around this whole time, which is why you’re both getting confused. If they could do these movies all over again, it might have been a more comic accurate timeline, so just like the Dr. Strange line from this movie after rule #1 of you don’t know anything in the multiverse, Go On Red. Just go with the flow ladies.

Andrew Hogan

In all honesty though, Marvel might be starting to cross a line between their old school comic fans and the casual fan. You have to keep in mind these stories have been told and retold in different ways for 60+ years. If you think this is crazy, just wait, it’s the tip of the iceberg depending how long these movies and shows keep doing well. The Avengers movies might have set a bar that’s impossible to continue. Imagine having to make at least 700 million for a movie to even be considered successful.

Andrew Hogan

Somebody didn’t do all their Marvel homework, lol.

Andrew Hogan

Such a fun reaction! I wasn't the biggest Doctor Strange fan going in, but I enjoyed it just fine. I did appreciate the Sam Raimi-ness of it! Question: have you seen Top Gun Maverick, or are you waiting for streaming?

David Crabtree

I enjoy the darker magic side of marvel. Would suggest watching "Cloak & Dagger" as it only had a couple seasons and is pretty okay. Not the classic 1984 movie staring Dabney Coleman and the kid from E.T., which is pretty fantastic and you should also watch, but it is not related to the Marvel comic. This was on whatever abc family converted to when it aired, so I think stuck on hulu for now and not Disney+.

Christopher Smith

You two definitely need to watch What If now.

aarswft

Man how much would it have sucked if they read your comment before watching.

aarswft

Love Carly's turn lol. "He didn't deserve her anyways."

aarswft

The pizza guy from the other universe that Strange forced to hit himself and who had the 2nd credits scene, he was played by the guy who played Ash in the Evil Dead movies (and TV-show), Likely you didnt see it, so let me tell you its a cult classic and it is about a guy who is tortured by demons that awake from a cursed book. So it was very fitting to have him in this. Edit: ...and in that movie he gets possesed and his arm attacks him, so yeah, it was very fitting.

Dioskur

Getting ready to watch the reaction but it would be best if you have seen the X-Men first which I don't think you have. Oh well!

Colin Gutierrez

I think you have to be high to fully appreciate that movie.

MikeLL

Yes. Captain Carter is Peggy Carter, Captain America's former sweetheart.

Brian McGovern

A place I don't think she'll like as Raimi and Burton share a lot of WEIRD sensibilities which doesn't seem to be Cassie's speed.

Jason Dolan

You've just taken your first step into the world of Sam Raimi.

Philip Davetas

I plugged it in, but not all the way!! The list thing is a great idea!

Cassie

We watched it right before we watched the movie! We didn't film it though

Cassie

Been looking forward to this reaction! Just wish you had reacted to the “What if . . .” series first.

Rainbow Dash

Hey Cassie I’m not a huge Marvel fan but I still read your posts And usually watch your intro and Outro’s. I see in your Description you forgot to plug your mic in again. May I make a suggestion,? Make a checklist sort of like aviation, A go no-go list. Literally you go through your list and if you can’t say check you complete then move to the next. I know you’re about quality production and it probably drives you nuts more than us that you forget to do that kind of stuff. Three things I know you seem to forget frequently, is to make sure the mics plugged in, your battery dies, and you almost always forget tissues😂 Have A great Fourth of July!

Steven Ashford

excited for this reaction video. Happy i didn't watch it on my own. Happy to see carly back as well.

Gregory Martin

Elizabeth Olsen could stop a Mack truck. So hot 😍😍😍
