Ok guys, Goodfellas, not to be confused with good fellows. Still can't believe this was based on a true story. I'm not going to say much about my reaction, but wow what a storyteller!
Excellent movie. Great reaction.
“Jimmy was the kind of guy who rooted for the bad guy in movies.”
The movie is too much for me by the end (especially as I get older) but that's not a criticism of the movie. The witness protection program was a little bit of relief at the end. The movie is No. 9 on my list of best/favorite movies all time.

I think you’re getting Paulie confused with Tommy DeSimone. Tommy tried to rape Karen Hill but she fended him off. His attempted rape was one of the reasons that Paulie ok’d Tommy’s murder. Paulie and Karen carried on an affair that began when Henry was sent to prison and lasted for years.

I don't disagree with you about Karen, except for the Paulie bit. I read somewhere that Paulie sexually assaulted her, so that part to my knowledge isn't so cut and dry.

There's absolutely no reason to feel sorry for Karen Hill. For years she was happy to live off the proceeds of multiple felonies. She couldn't care less that her husband broke the law on a daily basis, regularly committing assaults, robberies and worse. She only became upset when he cheated on her. Well, as far as sins go, that was the least of his. Also, it should be noted, she carried on an affair with Paulie, the boss of the gang that Henry ran with, for YEARS. She was a scumbag just like her husband.

Great story Scorsese is a genius he knows the underside of mob life very well it seems, toxic characters with little or no redeeming qualities whatsoever, soon as narcotics was introduced into the story it all came crashing down ruining people's lives, leaving families broken in distress..what happened to Karen and their children?..I've noticed one consistent thing with mob movies and maybe in real life..life revolves around the dining room table did you get a load of the food!! I wouldn't mind being a dinner guest but, only once-in-a-lifetime. :)

A couple of thousand years ago, there was a debate between two Greek philosophers: Plato and Aristotle.
According to Plato, intense dramas are bad for us because they flood our psyche with disturbing feelings, and remove our ability to self-regulate our emotions, corrupting our souls. Aristotle disagreed - saying humans have the ability to cope with our intense feelings, and a good drama will teach us things about life in how it resolves its own conflict.
This 3000 year old argument was the inspiration for The Truman Show.

Finally found the time to watch this reaction. Wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be! I’m glad you recognized the great story telling and acting. Joe Pesci actually won an Oscar for this role. And he gave the shortest speech in Oscar history. Just a simple “thank you”............ you mentioned you wanted to dive more into the true story behind this. The Wikipedia page connected to this film if a great place to start. There’s pages on most of the people and events mentioned in this film. But if you really wanna dive deep check out the book “Wise Guys” that this was based on by Nicolas Pileggi. He also wrote the screenplay with Martin Scorecese... and he also happens to be married to Nora Ephron who’s considered the “Queen of Rom-Coms” (When Harry met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve got Mail, and many more)

Cassie was stressed and unhappy during most of the movie. Which I knew she would be. This is not her kind of movie. Cassie does not have to be exposed to every nasty seedy world. What makes Cassie's reactions so great is her kind soul. Yes, there is evil in the world. Cassie doesn't need to experience it all. She doesn't have to become disillusioned and jaded like so many people today. She can keep some of her innocence.

One of the most brilliant parts of this movie is that whole section where he’s getting ready to move the coke and it’s shot and edited and written in this frenetic, paranoid fashion, meant to embody the feeling of Henry’s coke addled mania. Best “stay off drugs” sequence in all film. (Outside the entirety of “Requiem for a Dream”.)

There are two books, I would recommend you read regarding the events of this movie and Henry Hill's life in Witness Protection. The first is Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi which is more or less Henry's biography, and the basis of this movie. The movie more or less rips the narration from the book, word for word. The other is On the Run a Mafia Childhood by Greg and Gina Hill, Henry Hill's actual children. In both the movie and Wiseguy, the writers changed it so Henry had two daughters, in order to protect the kids. Instead of a son and a daughter which is what the Hills had in real life. If you want the truth of who Henry Hill actually was, his children have the unvarnished truth. Since Henry seems to have told quite a few lies to make himself look good to Pileggi and guys like Scorcese who would no doubt wanna buy his life story.
As for why Jimmy didn't want to pay Morrie the money. A lot of it had to do with Jimmy just not liking Morrie. Morrie ran a hair-salon and sold wigs as shown in the movie. He also loaned out money and took bets as a bookie. Other than that and hanging around with Henry, Jimmy and people like them. Morrie really wasn't much of a gangster, he was what some people would call a "half-assed wiseguy" which meant people didn't respect him. Jimmy especially, we see in the movie that Jimmy tried to collect money from Morrie before. Well Morrie kept telling him he didn't have the money, meanwhile Jimmy who's an insomniac. Stays up nights and sees Morrie's commercials for wigs and is thinking "He has money for these commercials but he doesn't have my money?!" Then when Jimmy tries to collect Morrie threatened to go to the District Attorney. So not only is Morrie not a serious gangster (a guy who backs up his words and actions with muscle) but he's also a potential rat. The whole Lufthansa heist happened because some guy who owed Morrie money came to him with a tip, that was supposed to pay off his debts. This guy was looking for a crew to pull off the job, Morrie talked to Henry, and Henry put them in contact with Jimmy. For that Morrie was expecting to see some kind of finders fee, which he was gonna retire on. Of course Jimmy doesn't like Morrie so he's not gonna give him the money. Morrie keeps pressing the issue, so Jimmy has him killed. Partly because he was sick of Morrie demanding his money, partly because he probably figured Morrie would talk to the cops.
Last little tidbit the murder of Billy Batts didn't happen the same night him and Tommy had an argument. If I'm recalling correctly, it happened a week or a month later. Batts was talking to Jimmy about a loansharking business of his that Jimmy had taken over, while Batts was in prison. Like Batts says "I got mouths to feed." Tommy comes in that night and the two sucker punch him, beat the crap out of him, and kill him. All because Jimmy didn't want to give Batts back his loansharking. Which is why Jimmy immediately took Tommy's side when he walked back into the Suite.

I'm glad you didn't prescribe to the view that this film glamourises the mob, I've never understood that take. Henry Hill's life, as it's depicted here, is not something to be envious of. Also relieved you didn't totally despise it. Around the time Tommy shot Spider, I thought it was going to lose you. If you can’t distinguish between GOODFELLAS, CASINO, and THE SHINING in terms of what value there is for the viewer to extract from them…and whether or not Cassie would appreciate that value, then you’re not contributing productively here, IMO.
I wasn’t around yet when it was decided Cassie would watch THE SHINING. Had I been, I would have said I didn’t think it would be a movie she’d appreciate. Anyone who’s seen the reaction knows she did not. Cassie looked like she’d been in a car wreck after that movie. There was no point in her watching that movie, especially at that time.
Saying that, I was for Cassie watching FULL METAL JACKET and GOODFELLAS, and I’d be for her seeing CASINO too. Why? I think the storytelling and filmmaking — and in FMJ’s case, the messaging — is such that, though they may galvanize her to varying degrees, Cassie would take value from seeing them. That’s proven true with FMJ and now GOODFELLAS. It was not the case with THE SHINING.
With all that said, I do not think Cassie would appreciate RAGING BULL, which is an exercise in human savagery and degradation that is basically endured rather than watched to no real avail other than witnessing the achievements in acting and directing by De Niro and Scorsese. Would I say NO, Cassie must not see RAGING BULL? No. But if she does see it I guarantee a reaction far more like THE SHINING than GOODFELLAS or even FMJ.

Cassie, an important line, right at the beginning, "I root for the bad guys at the movies." Something you'll know from all the comments in your Darth Vader short, and all the comments for Full Metal Jacket. Just watched the first little bit. First Cassie the moving process does end. Four…Five years tops you’ll be done 🤣 Second, Shoeless Joe Jackson, how did you pull that out of your brain. Impressive. Third, after the opening scene when you held your glass up I thought you were gonna say it’s gonna take a different drink to get me through this movie. And lastly, not sure if you know who Lou Giglio is, but he was in the mafia and one of the few people that were able to get out without getting killed and he pastors a church in California. Casino is a better story, IMO, and though having some violent moments, isn't nearly the constantly violent trip Goodfellas is. I still can't take the Godfather though. I've tried to watch it several times, but it's just too slow. Very little to nothing seems to happen in the Godfather. I REALLY don't think Cassie will like the Godfather, either. Fun facts about Goodfellas.
*Henry tried getting away from the life when he was young by joining the army. But eventually he reverted to his former lifestyle and that was that.
*Henry actually hung around with Paulies sons a lot.
*Jimmy real name was Burke
*Paulies was Vario
*The federal officer who discusses Henry entering the witness protection program was the actual officer who handled
Henry's case.
*Tommy's mother did not give him a closed casket funeral. Tommy disappeared and was never found.
*It was heavily rumored that while Henry was in prison Pauly and Karen had an affair and Tommy tried to rape her at one point.
.....lots of others but that's enough for now.
Great movie. I'm looking forward to sitting tonight and watching.
Hopefully this gets you to WANT to watch more mob movies.

I gotta stop imagining The DUDE working for Big Paulie or Walter arguing with Morris. lol. Goodfellas would briefly set the gold standard for these types of movies for years after this one - largely with some of the same actors.
From The Godfather to Untouchables to Goodfellas to Donnie Brasco, Casino, and Heat, this is a largely uncategorized genre but one I was sad to admit that I voted for you to see. It’s pretty heavy stuff, but I equally enjoy seeing someone’s uncomfortable reaction (sorry, we want to see the full range sometimes). If not entertaining, it could still be somewhat educational. To this day, I stay away from people that look like Robert DeNiro or Joe Pesci. :)

"What is a made guy?" A brief tutorial on the organization of the Mafia:
Henry says, to be in the Mafia you needed to be "100% Italian." Now, did they check your genealogy? No. At first, maybe 100 years ago, you had to be 100% Sicilian specifically, but even then it wasn't a hard rule. Al Capone (De Niro in THE UNTOUCHABLES) himself wasn't Sicilian. Over the decades, the rule weakened to the point where an Italian last name and no known non-Italian relatives was good enough.
Henry, Jimmy and Tommy weren't actually IN the Mafia. Like most Mafia gangsters, they were "associates" of the Mafia. Associate is the lowest rung on the ladder but it still meant you could make a lot of money and have a lot of influence. But a small number of Italian associates would be offered official membership, by going through a traditional ritual where they swore loyalty to "this thing of ours" before everything else, family, country or God. These "made men" were soldati - "soldiers." Being a soldier carried lots of privileges - other gangsters could not touch them without permission from higher ups, and they were entrusted with a lot more responsibility. Billy Batts, the guy murdered in Henry's diner by Tommy and Jimmy, was a soldier in the Gambino crime family.
Now a group of soldiers and associates working in the same geographic area, or in the same illegal industry, would comprise a "crew." Every crew was headed by a caporegime - a "captain." Paulie was a captain. In turn a bunch of crews would band together and form a crime family. Families are supposed to be run by a three-man administration - a boss, a second-in-command called an underboss, and a councilor to the boss known as a consigliere. All told, including associates, crime families can be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand criminals. The further west you go, there is (or was) usually one family per city - the Chicago Outfit, or the Detroit Partnership, or the families in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Montreal or Philadelphia. But NYC is like the capital of the Mafia. It has the famous Five Families operating in and around NYC and in upstate New York, in Connecticut, and New Jersey. These families are named after their founders - the Gambinos, the Genoveses, the Luccheses, the Bonannos, and the Colombos. Paulie was a captain in the Lucchese family, running a crew out of Brooklyn.
There used to be a Commission, a kind of board of directors where the bosses of the all the major families in North America would meet to settle disputes and discuss broad policy, but it has not met in person in decades. Truth be told, while it's still around, the glory days of the Mafia are long behind it, mainly because of informants. Henry was just one of many, many defectors who have turned state's evidence and testified against their fellow gangsters to save themselves, and he was a low-ranking one at that. Now BOSSES have actually testified in court against their entire families. And in the old days these informants would be killed if they ever surfaced, but today, there's a growing number who seem to be quasi-celebrities. One of them, Michael Franzese (he appears very briefly as a character here, when Henry is naming a long list of gangsters he knows at a bar) now runs a YouTube channel with several hundred thousand subscribers. It's crazy.

Yep, that’s exactly how I thought that reaction would go. Thanks for watching it with us, Cassie.
Also, “his wig came off…at the wrong time” is an all-time Cassie classic. As funny as anything in the movie.

Two other great Martin Scorsese movies with DeNiro and Pesci are "Raging Bull" and "Casino" both have World-class performances!

You finally stopped referring to De Niro as "the guy from Meet The Parents" or getting him mixed up with gene Hackman. Progress!
That wasn't so bad. Glad that you were intrigued by the story despite everything.
We need a Godfather reaction soon, though. It's much different and I think you'd like it more even though it's more of a tragic story. But it's more sophisticated and subtle, less over the top, more likable characters and development. Hope we won't have to wait long.
We definitely need more Martin Scorsese films as well. If you wanna continue in the Scorsese gangster realm, the obvious one is Casino. It's kind of a cousin to Goodfellas, starring De Niro, Pesci, and Sharon Stone. In some ways, it's even better than Goodfellas. We've now seen both ends of the spectrum when it comes to his work. Goodfellas which is his apex, and Shutter Island which is one of his weaker ones, IMO. You loved one and was intrigued by the other. That's a good sign!

Looking forward to this reaction! I actually prefer Goodfellas to the Godfather films. I'm even more excited for The Patriot reaction!

To be clear I’m not saying I hate the actors. I think the performances are all great across the board and every now and then I’ll break out in a “KAREN! WE NEEDED THAT MONEY” because I love Ray Liotta (RIP big Ray!) but I just don’t like watching bad people do bad things for this long. It gets to me. That’s a me thing.

Mmm I disagree. FMJ was crude and vulgar to show the ugliness of war. There was no character to grasp onto and cheer for. Here even though there's criminals and killers its still a story with some kinda of hope for redemption

Just watched Natalie Gold’s reaction to this. Guess I’ll be waiting for the YouTube version. Can’t sit through this movie twice in a month. I hate everyone in it. (Generally just don’t like the mob)

Joe Pesci won an Oscar for his performance in this. It's not 100% accurate but it's one of the more accurate "based on a true story" movies you'll watch.

I have a feeling Cassie will have a "Full Metal Jacket" type of reaction. Besides the "love story", I can't see her liking any of these cold blooded killers. Either way, I'm excited to see her reaction!
Also Henry Hill was a regular on the Howard Stern show up until he passed away in 2012. He definitely was a character.
