[YT Edit] The Big Lebowski

Comments

I’ve enjoyed this so much I’ve watched it twice already with you.

Jeremy Vickers

I too never re-watch the movies I don't re-watch.

Happy Hanukkah

Cassie is correct. The tax bracket line is quite simply one of the best line ever delivered.

Ria Grix

I never repeat watch these types of movies, once is enough.

Joe

I remember watching this in the theater too. And I wasn’t blown away by it either. Yet the rest of the night me and my roommate who I saw it with kept quoting it over and over. To the point our other roommate who didn’t see it with us said “are you sure you guys didn’t like it?, because you won’t shut up about it!” ... This film grows on you like no other. it’s now one of my faves.

Jeff Milcheck

“Darkness warsh’d over the dude. Blacker than a black steers tookus on a moonless prairie night. There was no bottom”...... lol... I love this movie. More Coen Brothers please!!!!!!

Jeff Milcheck

Hey Cassie, the Cowboy/ narrator is none other than the great Sam Elliott. One of my personal favorites. You'll see much more of him when you finally watch 'Tombstone' and 'Roadhouse.' 🙂👍🏻 (...or if you watch the Yellowstone prequel known as 1883.)

'Pappy' Johnston

That's quite interesting, and well said! I think you're right, in retrospect. That being said, there are folks who enjoy it on a totally different spectrum of Comedy from what I've outlined, also I'm sure. I think maybe in general I was speaking broadly, but you have a valid point. Maybe I should have said "What makes this movie so powerfully comedic TO ME" :D

Coleton B.

It's a "sense of humor" thing. Some people like Big Lebowski, some like Dumb and Dumber, and yet others prefer things like Romcoms and others yet like Monty Python. Personally, I didn't find it in the least bit funny, but nobody would ever accuse me of lacking a sense of humor. I just find different things funny. My point is, it's powerfully comedic to you, but it's more along the lines of Dumb and Dumber to me (another movie I found more moronic than funny). To each his own.

Art of Free Speech

I sent that film to Cassie a while ago. I try to send the less commonly known gems, because so many do so well here.

Steve Colletti

You very nicely explained the accent - it's so very Katharine Hepburn. :) (amongst others)

I saw THE BIG LEBOWSKI in the theater and didn’t think much of it. Watched the PIB YouTube edit. My Big Lebowski blu-ray arrives tomorrow. 😉👍

Jason Chirevas

Now you and Carly definitely need to watch the Coen Bros. "Raising Arizona" soon! 1) Really funny 2) Involves kids 3) Much less violent than "Fargo" and "Big Lebowski"

Paul Stelter

My hubs favorite movie I'm glad I waited so long to watch it and Cassie's full reaction..The human comedy is the influence for this film.."The Dude Abides! "

Celeste McAllister

Cassie, being a Harrison Ford fan...I hope you consider watching/reacting to a film called "Frantic" (1988) with Harrison Ford, it's a great french noir suspenseful mystery thriller. The movie has aged but it still got a lot of bite to it and I think the age adds to the whole movie. It's one of those movies that when it finishes you feel like you have been on a long great journey.

The subtlety is what makes this movie so powerfully comedic. When the Dude discovers Jackie Treehorn's sketch, the last, confused swipe of his pencil. When Donny tells the Dude and Walter they've posted the Tournament schedule and Walter answers "Donny, shut the F- when do we play?" When DaFino tells the Dude he's a 'brother seamus' and the dude says "What, like an Irish Monk?" When Maude is showing the Dude the porno and she says "You can imagine where it goes from here" and the Dude replies "He fixes the cable?" No explanations, no apologies, just dark comedy gold. This was so much fun.

Coleton B.

Not sure if anybody mentioned it anywhere, but you asked what the deal was with Maude (Big Lebowski's daughter) and the rug, but - basically, The Big Lebowski wasn't rich, either! He had no money of his own when he married Maude's mother and when her mom passed, The Big Lebowski got an allowance of his own to spend. Maude's the one in control of all the Lebowski business-type stuff. Also, the rug Dude stole was a gift to Maude from her mom so that's why she took it back - but also offered him a job so he could have part of the ransom money back as a sort of finder's fee so he could buy himself a rug that had no sentimental value haha OH! And about her accent - it's something you'll hear a lot in much older movies. It's called a Mid-Atlantic or Transatlantic accent. I can't remember *why* they decided it was a good idea, but it was basically a standardized way of speaking for actors on film. It's kind of an audible way that Julianne could make it clear that Maude is very well-off and proper and has probably also been to an insanely expensive boarding school (which is another place they taught the accent).

Rue

That WAS fun!
