Speed - Full Reaction

Here is SPEED! I had been wanting to watch this one anyways since so many of you said we would love it, I was so happy it won the poll. Carly was preparing for a horror movie but we ended up having so much fun watching this! They don't make em like they used to eh? JK I think I even have Carly in my Keanu club now!

Speed - Full Reaction

Comments

Sandra Bullock is pretty. Good point about the movie might benefit if more of a motive (or smarter motive), as you say,

Clay F

"Like a rollercoaster!!!" And so began one of the great Hollywood friendships: 'Bullock & Reeves', of the last 30 years! This was a great PiB classic reaction!

Terry Yelmene

I'm not trying to say that we didn't know how to tell stories back then. Nor am I saying all movies from after Speed are good. The Shawshank Redemption came out the same year as this, and it's one of the best movies ever made. If you want to talk about older movies, The Robe (1953) is wonderful. What I mean is that, in the last thirty years, our sense of storytelling has changed. That's why movies these days can (can, but don't always) feel both fast-paced, and have depth, with not a scene wasted. The problem is, we've become a society obsessed with instant gratification and wanting action more than depth, which is why while there are a lot of masterpieces, there's also a lot of popcorn flicks that don't have much to them. I think that's why the later Star Wars movies aren't nearly as good as the originals. They sacrificed good story for instant gratification, flashy special effects and succumbing to the money-making machine. I'm probably not explaining this well. In my original comment, I was probably trying too hard to be brief, and as a result, I oversimplified. Every era has good and bad films. But things have changed, and while it hasn't always been for the good, sometimes it has.

Raven Dark

Yes, and every movie since this came out is exactly like those. Sigh. Okay, so we have Love and Thunder, the Twilight Saga, and the Scary Movie franchise. But those are not supposed to be deep, emotionally resonant films. They are pure shut your brain down entertainment. But there are plenty of masterpieces out there that have come out since Speed, ones that do have lots of depth and are meant to stay with you. As a matter of fact, I never cared for the newer Star Wars films, or Love and Thunder. When I said we've learned a lot about storytelling, I was referring to things like Rocky (the later films are after Speed), The Shawshank Redemption. and The Green Mile. Rocky, Andy Dufresne (Shawshank) and Paul Echcomb, (Green Mile) all feel like real people. Chances are, those stories would probably look very different if they came out twenty years before they did.

Raven Dark

"We've learned a lot more about storytelling and deepening characters in the time since this movie came out, so these days, it probably would have had a lot more depth." Lol, no we haven't. Yes, Disney Star Wars and Thor: Love and Thunder are the pinnacle of human storytelling.

Joel P

In my opinion, this never aged very well. But it put Keanu on the map and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

Joe M

Hey Cassie, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you on the subject of a better motivation for Mr. Payne. Better motivation would lead to sympathy for Poor Mr. Payne and I don't wanna sympathize with a psycho who'd just as soon blow up a bus full of innocent people as sit down and watch a football game. I'm just sayin'... :)

Richard Ryan

Keanu is an amazing person in real life. He was at the bar in the hotel where my brother got married and he took a picture with them without even a second thought. It was right before they walked down the aisle to be married. The picture is online as it got picked up by the news very quickly. It made that day even more special as he is one of my brother's favorite actors. I feel very fortunate to have shook his hand that day.

Jordan

"Prom-prom on your mom-mom" absolutely killed me. I love watching movies with you two!

sarCC

I thought Cassie was bad at handling suspenseful moments. Carly is worse. I would love to see Carly watch more thrillers.

Rick Williams

HAHAHA yes the ladies would like Point Break .. a little Keanu, a little Patrick Swayze, a little Heat.

Greg

Sadly no, you cannot give in to the terrorists demands even if it means some people will die. Giving in to their demands only serves to inspire copycats and give people incentive to commit these crimes. The answer is to crush them. The plane that blew up was being towed by that yellow vehicle, the driver was seen fleeing. And at about 54:00 sorry Carly but no way you would be able to drive that bus. You were scared to WATCH this movie haha. Ok so this was actually my first time ever seeing this movie. It was really good. Both of the "jump the track" scenes took me a little out of it, and when Jack said it the 2nd time I rolled my eyes. I'm pretty sure if they would have slowed down instead of sped up the train would have just stopped on its way up the incline. Those scenes really pushed the suspension of disbelief, but whatever its a movie and it happens. I'd definitely watch it again. Oh and Cassie I think you and Carly really lucked out in this movie. There are many movies listed as "thrillers" that could be considered horror movies. For example 'Panic Room' and 'Secret Window' both are listed on IMDB as crime thrillers but both are also lite horror movies.

My_Cousin_Mose

Try the link to get into direct video from Vimeo. It's listed under try this if player doesn't work.

David Freese

Have you tried the direct link to Vimeo that's in the link that's says if the player doesn't work?

David Freese

"We've learned a lot more about storytelling and deepening characters in the time since this movie came out". That's quite a claim. Observe the depth of characters in The Third Man (1949) for example.

Michael Threapleton

OMG...I love Anthony Quinn in the movie. I just know they would love the movie and swoon over Keanu lol. And also its a great choice to send.

Patrick Toscano

One additional note, which I only thought of after I left the above comment because I left it before I heard your comment at the end about Howard Payne's motives. Were this movie made now, it might have given him the kind of deeper backstory you wanted, probably along the lines of what you mentioned. We've learned a lot more about storytelling and deepening characters in the time since this movie came out, so these days, it probably would have had a lot more depth. Still one of my favorite movies, though.

Raven Dark

Yeah, this isn't a thriller. It's an action movie. The difference is this is like Die Hard, versus something like Silence of the Lambs or Criminal Minds (Tv show). In fact, this movie was marketed at the time as Die Hard on a bus. Loved this movie, and so glad you guys loved it. I knew you would.

Raven Dark

Not Random Fun Fact: Keanu had a crush on Sandra when they were filming.

Kevin

Great pick sir! One of my favorites as well, It's one I hope to send very soon. They will love Paul Sutton. And Anthony Quinn in that movie is so great.

Erik Daniel

Everyone has a crush on Keanu.

granny_goodness

Y'all should check out Keanu in one of my favorite romance movies A Walk in the Clouds.

Patrick Toscano

Oh God no.

Carol_White

Random fun fact: Sandra Bullock had a crush on Keanu when they were filming

Jyn Jilly

If it helps at all, ladies, there were no passengers on that first bus that blew up. Just the driver who hadn't started his shift yet.

Stick Figure Studios

I also think that they think the bus at the beginning was full of passengers but it was just the driver, Bob.

Variable38

Hadn’t seen Speed in a while, so it was nice to go back and rewatch it! Would love to see more edge of you sit movies! Definitely need to add Bad Boys to your watch list! I’d also love to see some Disaster/end of the world movies!

Biggman83

I recently re-watched Speed, but I didn't want to wait for the YT edit, so I put the director's commentary on instead. Funny enough, Jan de Bont was talking about how the airport set was near the beach, and seeing the surfers was the source for the idea of Keanu and Sandra "surfing" the door out of the bus. Agree with those who have said that Point Break would be another Keanu winner. I am also still holding out hope for The Matrix Revolutions AND The Matrix Resurrections.

Tyler Foster

Are you sure? As far as I know, the only things the other monitors show are footage being captured by the TV news choppers (and the football game).

Tyler Foster

You should watch The Patriot for 4th of July.

David Crabtree

That was a fun reaction! Great job ladies! I’m glad you guys enjoyed it so much! As others have mentioned. The plane the bus hit was a cargo plane. Like a UPS or FedEx type plane. So there weren’t any passengers on board. Probably no flight crew either. As the plane was being towed at the time. You definitely need to dig deeper into Keanu’s filmography. It seems Point Break is a popular next step. I concur. Nice job ladies! Looking forward to the next one!

Robert da Spruce

I've been so busy at work lately that I've missed a bunch of movies and am so far behind. I hate it, I love watching movies with you but because of the hectic schedule I've had to just check out some of the youtube edits. But I'll never stop being a patreon member even if I don't have the time to watch along just because you are amazing and I want to support your kind of good. Now the first night I have to myself in a while and I get to watch Speed with Cassie and Carly? I've said it before, you guys are too good to me lol. Thanks for this. I am predicting you will both be on the edge of your seat with sweaty palms almost the entire time.

Erik Daniel

The worst thing about Speed is that both Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves had crushes on each other during filming and neither acted on it.

Timothy Burrows

As a physicist, the gap jump is offensive to the core.

Michael Threapleton

A lot of good camera work on this "I felt." Angles and,,,,,, etc. The best shot "with the music and all," was the 50ft gap and abandon highway look. That huge far shot, to that zoom in of the menacing gap of "oh my.." I tell people a 70 to 90ft triple in MX is a long ways! 50 for a bus is insane. It looked iffy jumping, but they couldn't CGI then like now. If they could have the look they had approaching, even the cars splitting was perfect. Then had a CGI jump it would of been epic.

Michael J

More Keanu for Carly! "Point Break" with Patrick Swayze !,for the aforementioned Sci Fi poll may I recommend "Close Encounters of the third kind 1977" "Forbidden Planet1957" "The War of the Worlds 1953"

Celeste McAllister

I've seen this at least 20 times and thought I knew all the lapses in logic but this was the first time I realized that Payne would have known the bus had exploded well before spotting the video loop. Earlier in the film they make a point to show he has a monitor with the vehicle's GPS location, and that would have cut out the second it blew. Maybe in an earlier draft or edit they had that being what led him to look at the video feed closer, which would have made a lot more sense.

tiny baby kitty man

Great reaction. Looks like Carly is back to 100%. That's great!

Brent Petty

Point break is a GREAT movie I like it more than speed. Point break is one of my all time favorite movies

Ry Jo

Havent watched reaction yet. Betting on entertained......

Michael J

Conspiracy Theory is underrated. It's not perfect, but it has some clever writing, and I think Cassie would enjoy it. (She sure enjoyed the other Richard Donner/Mel Gibson collab, "Maverick.")

WastedPo

You are right, only the first two. I guess the third can be expected some day. I think there was a poll once on Instagram whether she should continue reacting to these (meaning the 3rd), not sure what the end result was.

Gábor Árki

Point break will blow you away. It stars Keanu Reeves and Patrick swayze and to me is more thrilling and a better movie than speed.

Michael Lynch

That was definitely a spoiler. The first half of the movie you don't know who the bad guys are. You just told her

Michael Lynch

Utah, gimmee 2

Michael Lynch

Yeah as mentioned repeatedly the sequel is terrible, Keanu didn't even return for it. But another kinda over top with a little action but also fun and has Dennis Hopper in probably my favorite role of his, look into My Science Project, it's a B movie but never fails to entertain.

Bubba Fett

The Godfather Part III is a great movie.

Mr. Killeverything

That’s the start of a looooooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg list.

Andrew Hogan

Some sequels need to be ignored. No questions asked. No further conversation The Godfather III Caddyshack 2 Blues brothers 2000 and Speed 2 to name a few

nick bell

Anybody else having trouble playing the vid? I won't play for me.

Beau Mont

I agree, you can't ask more from a reaction than this. Top tier fun movie and reaction. When Carly was explaining to Cassie early on how the bomb worked (armed at 50, detonation below 50) all that was missing was Carly saying "And that is why the movie is called SPEED!"

MikeLL

It's listed on her letterbxd, so she has already seen it, I'm afraid. Too bad. For us. https://letterboxd.com/pib1/films/

MikeLL

This is the movie that made her a major movie star, is what it is. Your 2) was good guessin, they didn't show that in the move, but hey, it is a movie.

MikeLL

Yah, seems like it would have been safer if they were going slower at the end. But, of course, this movie is called SPEED!

MikeLL

RANSOM and CONSPIRACY THEORY are two other ‘90s thrillers that would make great reactions.

Alex Villarreal

Kinda surprising considering the trash he actually said yes to.

Dooly

I would add the next 2 Die Hard sequels. I like part 3 more than part 1.

Variable38

Great movie and great reaction. Just one thing I will add is that you can ignore the sequel. It's just laughably bad. Also, no Keanu in part 2. I think he read the script and said, "nope."

Aaron Mann

This movie's great. It was practically a foregone conclusion that you two would enjoy it. The one thing that I wish had been done differently was the gap in the road part. (I think everyone has this same issue.) The lead-up to it is amazing with the building tension and the police peeling off to leave them to their fate, but the jump itself needed tweaking. They digitally removed the gap in the long-shot. Maybe if they'd picked a different section to remove (to account for the bus's inevitable declining arc), and said it was 20 feet instead of 50 - I feel like instead of it breaking suspension of disbelief, it would've been the highlight set piece of the movie.

WastedPo

So glad you liked this one Cassie! It’s such a good popcorn movie. If you want more Keanu Point Break is good, the 1993 version of Much Ado About Nothing, And then if you haven’t seen the first Bill and Ted movie, you should-so stupid funny.

Tinkerbell

Just to put your guys' minds at ease a little. The plane the bus crashed into was a freight plane which would've only been carrying cargo. Plus, it was being towed from the front so no one was onboard and the tow driver ran away after it blew up, so no unnecessary innocent casualties. 😁

Zane From Canada

Here’s a few more movies similar to this for future reference. Twister. Under Siege (although there is brief nudity). Backdraft. Lethal Weapon trilogy. Passenger 57. Executive Decision. Drop Zone. Arachnophobia. Crimson Tide. Chill Factor. The Rock. Outbreak. Demolition Man. Total Recall. Cliffhanger. Bad Boys. There’s a bunch more, but that’s off the top of my head

Andrew Hogan

This is up there now as one of my favorite reactions. I think I had a smile on my face the whole time. From the sisterly bickering, to the guessing, to the surprises, the little flirting, the absurdity at times, man, just fantastic. I had a blast, pun intended.

Andrew Hogan

Lol, god what great show.

Andrew Hogan

Carly made me laugh too much in the intro, she was in a panic 😂 Your word was at stake Cassie ;). This film is brilliant, there is not a minute of respite. Tension, emotions and love. The winning combo!!! The actors are all great 👍 Reaction!

Grégory Gautier

LOL The Keanu movies you've done have been allot of fun

Bryan Escober

Well now for the next Keanu film you two should watch point break it’s only the next logical step. Plus it has Gary Busey at peak Busey and Patrick Swayze at peak Swayze.

Night King01

“Prom-prom”! That’s just “Adorb-dorbs”! 😂 Looking forward to watching this one! 👍

Robert da Spruce

I love this flick. Sandy is so particularly amazing looking in this.

Philip Davetas

You two are a riot together. The beginning of this was hilarious, CASSIE!!!. It’s not scary, Prom Prom.

Andrew Hogan

Let’s gooooo!!!! What a great pick to watch with Carly. Glad you both liked it! Nevermind the physics of the bus going up instead of down when it jumped the bridge 😁 This film has the formula for non-stop intensity, just like Die Hard. Watched this over and over as a kid.

John Rando

Am I wrong or did she only watch the first 2 Matrix movies? Did she get talked out of finishing them?

Variable38

Bummer, won't load.

Beau Mont

The bus jumping scene never fails to make me laugh... but otherwise amazing movie.

ExploreWinnipeg

Hey Cassie, what is it with you guys making predictions about what’s gonna happen and then it comes true? It’s amazing and it’s not the first time it’s happened. I just smile and shake my head. This movie was Sandra’s big break. Keanu decided not to do the sequel which has Annie back with a new cop boyfriend ( I guess they were right about relationships starting from intense situations not lasting) and they are on a cruise ship. I only watched it once, but it’s basically the same thing with a bad guy and her boyfriend trying to stop him. Don’t bother watching it. Its bad. They reunited a while back for a romantic movie called The Lake House, they have such great chemistry. You should definitely check it out. It is right up your alley, even if you don’t watch it as a reaction. If you want more Keanu action. Watch Point Break. He plays an FBI agent and he stars with Patrick Swayze. My aunt used to work for 20th Century Fox. In the Nakatomi bldg from Die Hard in fact, which was right next to the lot. We would go and watch movies there and I remember seeing bus 2525 parked in the back lot. It always made me smile when I saw it. I wish I could post pictures because there is also a giant Star Wars mural at the studio on the side of an entire bldg. It is of Luke and Vader. Here is a link to the mural. You can actually see the Nakatomi bldg in the background https://images.app.goo.gl/guHFki3UYRYA34CZ6 Below is the Ellen clip where we see Keanu and Sandra admitting that they had a crush on each other when filming the movie, but never pursued it. I think they would’ve made a great couple. They were so cute together and this movie made me crush on him even more along with Point Break. I still can’t believe Speed opened in theaters 28 years ago on June 10th and Keanu was already 30 years old when it came out. It’s also hard to believe he was 50 when the John Wick franchise started and he’s now 58. https://youtu.be/waY6FwOd9eM

Tara

If you enjoy a more heroic Keanu then you should definitely check out Point Break! A perfect action popcorn flick with lots of pop culture references being made from it.

Jedi Psy

Wow what an intro. You were wound up. Coffee or adrenaline? I used to not mind elevators until I got stuck on a job in one while a crew was outside welding on some tanks. The elevator was filling up with smoke. Couldn’t get me out fast enough. Haven’t been in one since.

Steven Ashford

I love when the sisters are doing these! Especially these action movies.

Philip Davetas

This one definitely falls under the category of "dumb fun", but it's still a really fun movie. Watching Dennis Hopper chew the scenery as the villain is still entertaining as hell even to this day. Glad you guys enjoyed and great reaction as always.

Brian Jones

So you're gonna watch Twister now right? Right!?

Zachary Carter

"I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around the city keeping its SPEED above 50 and if its SPEED dropped it would explode. I think it was called, 'The bus that couldn't slow down'. " -Homer Simpson

Christopher Smith

I remember seeing separate interviews with Keanu and Sandra. They both became smitten with each other while shooting the movie, but neither made a move on the other. It might of been Ellen's show. She had Sandra on first admitting to it, and then months later when Keanu was a guest she showed him that clip and then he confessed to his crush on her. I'm sure both are filled with regret.

Shawn Kildal

Good flick. Saw this in the theater and was riveted the whole time. I think this is the best of all the DIE HARD copycats that were released in the wake of that film (and it was directed by the cinematographer of DIE HARD no less, Jan De Bont, who later did TWISTER). Yeah, a ton of fun. Knew you two would get a kick out of it.

Stick Figure Studios

1) The motive: The bad guy was a former member of the police bomb squad who became disfigured on the job and then fired and to top it off, he lost his pension. He obviously didn't take that very well. 2) Jack speed up the train so it would derail off the tracks as it turned the corner otherwise it would (I'm guessing here btw) it would do a head on collision into a solid concrete wall and they most likely wouldn't survive. Sandra Bullock did a few minor roles before this, but for this was the first time the general audiences became familiar with her.

Shawn Kildal

Hopper never won an Oscar. He lost that year to Michael Caine in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS.

Patrick Flanagan

Some directors only have one or two good movies in them.

Patrick Flanagan

This and UNDER SIEGE are the best of the "DIE HARD ON A [blank]" action movies that came out in the '80s and '90s.

Patrick Flanagan

I remember a couple years back I think maybe the promotion for Bird Box and John Wick 3 was making the rounds in the talk shows at the same time and Sandra Bullock, on Ellen, admitted that when they shot speed she was really attracted to Keanu and thought he was really cute. Said she wanted to ask him out but she was too shy cuz they were co-stars and working together. Cut to a couple weeks later Keanu was on Ellen and she asked him the same thing. He said he also thought Sandra was very cute, and he wanted ask her out but he was also too shy. I think they never got involved and are friends now but didnt tell eachother. Could probably find both clips on YouTube. They have good chemistry together on screen and it's probably because they both for real wanted to jump eachother😉

Sahitya

"Jumping the track" in the subway meant he needed to DERAIL the subway car, so it wouldn't smash straight onto something/someone? That's what I always thought. Derail and maybe they have a chance? I don't know. But that was fun watching you guys!

Philip Alan

Omg the reaction we have been waiting for! Yaaas

Obie Brown

Yeah, don't bother with the sequel, it just takes away from this one. Just see this as a standalone movie. Its great this way. With the sequel they just tried to milk it.

Lifehouse

The villain is played by Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper, and this is one of his better performances. Nobody played crazy like he did. Speed, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, he’s lost his mind in all of them. But he won his Oscar for Hoosiers, in which he played an alcoholic in search of redemption, a very sweet and heartfelt performance. He had more range than you’d think.

Brian Harris

shout out to the director Jan de Bont. He was a legendary cinematographer before this film. He shot Die Hard and Hunt for Red October for John McTiernan… Does Flatliners and Basic Instinct… Then he directs two of my favorite films of the 90s… Speed and Twister. They make for the ULTIMATE double feature. Hope you haven’t seen Twister yet cuz it’ll rock you just as hard as this.

djKENTO

As I said, great movie and I knew you'd love it. ...But I still say it had no business being on a horror/thriller list. We're gonna need a do-over on that poll at some point ;)

Robin T

Yes but if you click "direct link incase player doesn't work" it will take you to a working player

Philip G.

Anyone else having problems playing this reaction?

Shawn Kildal

I remember this was the movie I watched over and over again. Where I got my Keanu crush lol

GamerGal8684

I think this movie was pitched to the studio as "Die Hard on a Bus". Some trivia: - Originally Harry was written as the real villain pulling the strings in the background and Payne would only have been his pawn. I'm glad they didn't do it. - They actually did a bus jump stunt with a real bus, but there was a ramp and the distance they jumped through was much much smaller than the gap shown in the movie. Also, the bus was totally wrecked, tires blown etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPhNIS69ayQ The movie is pretty much jumping the shark with this scene, I don't think anyone can suspend their disbelief this much. - According to rumors the studio didn't want Keanu in the lead role because they were not sure he can pull of being an action hero, despite already playing such a role in Point Break (1991). Sandra Bullock wasn't the first choice either. Later they both admitted having a huge crush on each other, but neither of them pursued it. Instead, they become very good friends and still are. They have been reunited on screen in the romance drama The Lake House (2006).

I'm sure you'll have a lot of people telling you this but you really don't need to bother watching Speed 2: Cruise Control.
