Clear and Present Danger (1994) - Full Reaction

I loved this one, maybe even more than Patriot Games. Why did they change the Jack Ryan after HF? he was so good! Such a tangled web to work out and I loved it. No notes.

Clear and Present Danger (1994) - Full Reaction

Comments

Oh Cassie, I know you're Canadian but really, You forget you had a president names Donald Trump

Habman

It's not that Cassie is naive... she always senses the full scope of everything that could be wrong... she just choses to always seek out, and hope for the best from the characters in the stories she loves... as it is here... even when facing 'Clear and Present Danger'. A Great "I don't dance" - "GOOSEBUMPS" Reaction Cassie!

Terry Yelmene

and I also second Executive Decision, great Kurt Russell flick.

In a way since Harrison Ford would play the president in AF1 he is sort of bringing the Ryan character back because in the novels Ryan would eventually become the president so in a way AF1 does make that happen, he's just not playing Ryan this time.

Jack and Clark become best friend and the sniper Chavez ends up dating Clarks daughter

Jason Mangen

A movie that isn’t a Jack Ryan movie but feels like one is Executive Decision (1996) starring Kurt Russell. I think you would enjoy it. Air Force One is a thriller starring Harrison Ford as the President on his hijacked plane that I also think you would enjoy.

Trembling Colors

Also Cassie now that’s you’ve gotten into these political thrillers I highly recommend Olympus Has Fallen and it’s sequels London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen.

Funny thing about Harrison Ford replacing Alec Baldwin in these movies is that in "The Fugitive", Ford at one point dyes his hair black, making him look an awful lot like... Alec Baldwin!

Rick Moreno

hello Cassie, loved that movie when it came out, I also read the book, Tom clancy even started a kind og genre, technothrillers...is a very good read.......and as the colombian and bogotanian patreon resident I can tell you is easy to wear a full suit in Bogota hehehe the city is at 2600m (8500ft) up in a mesa, so most of the time is cold in there and wear a suit is really comfy...in fact in the cold mornings add to that scarfs, gloves and an umbrella....it could rain a lot...and if not if it is good to protect you from the sun at those altitude up in the mountain range....

salim alvarez

You're so cute! I wish I could say that governments aren't corrupt. Not everyone involved is, but corruption is there. Greed and power. I kinda look at it this way. Those that serve and come out millionaires can't have stayed clean.

Reece Coventree

laughed when you pronounced reciprocity... it's from the word reciprocate. If that helps you remember. Great reaction. Oh and i'd classify this movie as a political thriller for genre. :)

ExploreWinnipeg

Jesus...spoiler alert?? She's already said she's interested in reading the books!

Sean Novack

To be fair, that IS his actual name. "Willem" is just a stage name.

Patrick Flanagan

Cassie, you are so Harrison Fording this weekend. If you ever get around to it, you might actually like WITNESS. I think a flick he was nominated for an Oscar.

Philip Davetas

"The Sum Of All Fears" is suppose to be a prequel to the Jack Ryan series of movies so Ben Affleck will play a younger Jack Ryan.

Dustin Denner

If you need more Harrison Ford in your life, similar to his Jack Ryan phase, you must watch Air Force One. YOU HAVE TO!!! Thank me later 😉

Jon Brown

There are a number of movies left with Jack Ryan, you have Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit which has Costner in it. Sum of All Fears which has Morgan Freeman, and a John Clarke (Willem Dafoe a character) origin story called Without Remorse, not great but not terrible lol.

Bubba Fett

Kittridge, ahhh i hate it when i can't place it until IMDB after!

Cassie

Ohhh thanks, I wouldn't have noticed!

Cassie

ooooh political thriller, love it. Seeing that I have already seen the movie, I can read the books now without spoiling it for myself. Sometimes if I read a book and see the movie right after I get so mad with any changes they make!

Cassie

RIGHT?! I say boy :)

Cassie

True, although that $400k goes a long way. In that, the president has a lot of freebies built in. He never has to pay for travel. He never has to buy gas. No auto insurance to worry about. His housing is all paid for. All utilities are paid for. And so on and so forth. Basically, all the recurring expenses "normal" people have to deal with, he does not.

Aaron Mann

a good way to think about it, I still wish they would have maybe done a few more with HF

Cassie

oooh so it was him who chose not to do the next film, at least they didn't think he needed replacing

Cassie

To answer the question at the beginning. I didn't used to fall asleep at movies, now it just depends. I think age plays a part.

Yaisu

"Operation Despacito"? I lol'd! Good content 😋

Snöffe

She needs to watch Air Force One, its basically Jack Ryan becoming President, haha

Obie Brown

The without remorse movie is terrible

Andrew Hansen

Been a while since I've seen this. Quite a few of these actors played similar roles in the TV series 24

Shawn Kildal

I second this.

Stick Figure Studios

The smile on her face whenever she sees Harrison Ford appear onscreen in a new movie is always adorable. God do I wish he had done more Jack Ryan films. It just wasn't to be. I actually like The Sum of All Fears...it's a good movie. But Ben Affleck just isn't a very good Jack.

Caomhan84

That was a lot of fun. I don't think I'd seen this since it first came out. For more Harrison Ford, someone above suggested Regarding Henry. That's a great idea! For more Willem Dafoe (I forgot how handsome he was when he was younger!) you gotta watch Platoon. And for similar movies in theme to this one, I gotta recommend Spy Game, with Robert Redford and Brad Pitt.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

OMG Regarding Henry would be such a good choice for her!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

what about "Absolute power (1997)"? great movie IMO. A little rough but still a great movie no HF but it got Clint Eastwood

Ry Jo

Harrison Ford also has Air Force One which is also good

JarHead0351

Depending on their specialty, a doctor could easily make more money than the President. President gets $400,000 per year.

Brent Petty

The CIA guy you can't ID was in Mission Impossible.

Brent Petty

Dead Calm is one of the greatest psychological thrillers of the 80s. Only 3 actors in the whole film but damn, what a combo! Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. Love it!

Jedi Psy

In answer to your question "is this how it is ? Corruption to the very top?" the answer is "its actually worse than you think" I remember watching this as a kid and loving it but watching it as an adult, knowing what I now know, is a different experience. This movie is another great example of propaganda. The CIA are responsible for untold misery, perpetuated around the world in the name of American Imperialism. The sad reality is that America has been under the control of corporate oligarchs for generations now. Not saying that any other country is not corrupt but America stands out because it pretends to be so virtuous on the world stage. I wish all my American brothers and sisters the best of luck in sorted this mess out. Educate yourselves, engage with your local, state and federal politics and you can make positive change. Peace and love.

Jedi Psy

If the Willem Dafoe character of John Clark was it all interesting to you, Amazon prime has a movie focusing on him too where he's played by none other than Michael B jordan. It's called WITHOUT REMORSE and it's also pretty good.

Stick Figure Studios

Read the books read the books read the books. So the ending is different in the book somewhat. Jack Ryan and the acting FBI director are about arrest cutter when he steps in front of a bus to commit suicide knowing he's going to be arrested. What Cutter did was illegal, However technically, what the president did and the mission was not illegal, failure to it to congress is but there's grey area when there's been a presidential finding and a black operation like this. However, it is political cancer. It could have toppled the government, at time when the world was teetering on the edge. So jack quietly goes to congress to report on what happened (not that public spectacle in the movie) and the congressmen privately talk to the president and to save the country from turmoil he just quietly throws the presidential election rather than resign or be impeached. One reason you need to read the books is you get a lot more of his wife and i hope i'm lucky enough to find a woman like her to marry. As they escape columbia in the book, there's a man helping them whose killed and Jack Ryan promises to take care of the man's wife and kids which he does, and one of Ryan's political opponent (Ryan's Boss and the gf of the next president) tries to make look like he was having an affair to ruin Ryan's marrriage. When Cathy discovers what the truth was she confronts the person behind it and uses this zinger, talking about the difference between Cathy and the other woman, "''At home, at night, I sleep with a man,' Cathy said sweetly. 'And the nice thing about it is that I never have to change the batteries.'" This scandal comes back to bite Jack Ryan when he becomes president. I love John Clark to, or his actual name which is John Kelly. A very interesting guy. Former Navy SEAL, then did paramilitary work for the CIA. He lost his pregnant wife in a car accident, and became very lonely. He rescues a sex trafficked woman and they fall in love, but he gets cocky because of his military training and wants to see where she worked. Unfortunately she's spotted and they kill her. He gets mad and goes on a killing spree of everyone in the drug organization that had anything to do with her and her death. Unfortunately, the cops figure out he did it. Just before they're to arrest him, he fakes his death, takes on his new name John Clark and works for the CIA. This is my second favorite of the Jack Ryan movies behind The Hunt for Red October.

Andrew Hansen

I think you can back-burner Jack Ryan for now. Affleck's and Pine's movies are fine but there's a lot more to watch from Harrison Ford for you: Working Girl Witness Air Force One What Lies Beneath Presumed Innocent Hollywood Homicide The Mosquito Coast Six Days, Seven Nights Regarding Henry The Devil's Own (that's Brad Pitt AND Harrison Ford)

Jason Dolan

Now you see why I said I liked this one so much. Glad you got to enjoy it. As far as falling asleep, sometimes I would but not often. I was actually thinking One of these days you’re gonna fall asleep on camera. That would be hilarious. You can say Reciprocity , but struggle with antimicrobial, you’re so funny. Is the government really that corrupt….. uh yes. Sorry Cassie. My dad worked for the defense department for over 30 years And he’s tell me more than once you don’t wanna know what I know that goes on out there.!

Steven Ashford

It wasn’t at first but then when I had to come back it was

Steven Ashford

Hey Cassie, just a tip, be careful about brushing the mic with your hand. I haven't noticed it before this reaction.

Carol_White

HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER for me, but this is second. I also think the Cassie will like SUM OF ALL FEARS.. in spite of Ben Affleck.

Stick Figure Studios

The conversation between Jack Ryan and Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones) is one of the most moving of film dialogues, "... you gave your word to the People of the United States. Your word is who you are, Jack." Wow, gives me chills every time. I wish I could spoil the novels for you in one go and tell you where this all ends. I wish I could tell you how Clark knew Jack's father. Or how Ritter is a good guy in the book or how awful the President and James Cutter really were. I want to tell you how Chavez and Clark become a family. But I won't! (fortunately, none of that spoils ANY movie, now or in the future) LOL. I loved this movie and get into it when you enjoy it too. This was another FUN reaction because I forgotten so much of it. By the way, I think this genre may be called, “political thriller.”

Ike

Oops. No blur.

djKENTO

I actually prefer Sum of All Fears as a movie over both this and PG, but you could totally be right about views. I’d still bet she will watch both as she has loved the character along with the Amazon series.

Cole Jennett

I’m not a negative person when it comes to movies and I’m not one of those people that’s like “don’t watch this cuz it’s bad”… But we can stop with the Jack Ryan reactions here. The next two films are both reboots, and don’t really serve the character of Ryan very well. I’m not saying “don’t watch them”… but I don’t think you’ll get many views or find many patrons who are super stoked to watch either film.

djKENTO

$650 million dollars would be a little over $1.25 billion dollars in today's money.

Jason Dolan

Answer the cliff hanger! Is it a boy or girl? 💙💖

Celeste McAllister

I hope Cassie has a chance to react to other Phillip Noyce films: The Saint (1997), The Bone Collector (1999), Dead Calm (1989), and Sliver (1993).

G

Mission despacito taco commence! As others have said Air Force One is a must. Love that freaking movie. Also totally different but presidential I think you'd really like the American president with Michael Douglas. Also a series that I've seen in the polls before that you would really love are the lethal weapon movies. Those are so excellent.

Michael Lynch

he will always be Jim Douglas from the Herbie movies for me, loved them growing up

Keith Jones

The car ambush was so well done it is used today by the Secret Service to train how to defend them.

Keith Jones

Cassie will also love Air Force One. It's a superb action thriller movie.

G

I totally forgot Dean Jones is in this movie. Gotta get Cassie watching "Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit" or "Ugly Dachshund" or "Million Dollar Duck".

Christopher Smith

I think Clear and Present Danger is the best in the Jack Ryan film series. I also think Cassie will really like The Sum of All Fears.

G

Hi Cassie, just an FYI. Are you aware the movie isn’t blurred out during your reaction? I would hate to see you get in trouble for copyright infringement. P.S. Hope the run went well today!

Robert da Spruce

Unless you see it with a 747 pilot that can't suspend disbelief...

Sean Novack

In a way, I've always considered AIR FORCE ONE to be Ford's unofficial third Jack Ryan movie (which is actually what I thought it was when I first saw the trailer). In the Clancy books Ryan does eventually become president and Ford very much plays a "Ryan-like" character in that film (a morally upright family man with a teenage daughter). As it was from the same director as IN THE LINE OF FIRE (Wolfgang Peterson), I know you were already interested in seeing that film, but maybe this will hasten that process. :-)

Stick Figure Studios

You've got to watch Air Force One with Harrison Ford as the President. It's a fantastic film!

David Crabtree

Does The Hunt for Red October take place canonically between Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears is technically the latest, but it was made to be a prequel?

Jason Dolan

As many times as I've seen this movie, I always forget it except for the one scene, haha.

Jason Dolan

I agree with you about the best Ryan and the best Ryan movie.

Stick Figure Studios

Actually, Clancy was a very strong Conservative Republican and stated that no "Ryan" film would ever be made starring Alec Baldwin again, even though he had no problem with how Baldwin portrayed the character. Ford was unhappy with how the novels were being written into screenplays and refused to reprise the role for a third film. After seeing what they did with Affleck in the role I can see his point - even accounting for the younger age. Ryan isn't an action hero, but that is what the studio wanted. I highly recommend reading the novels in the following order: 1. Patriot Games 2. The Hunt for Red October 3. The Cardinal of the Kremlin (all published before the fall of the Berlin Wall, followed by...) 4. Clear and Present Danger 5. The Sum of All Fears 6. Debt of Honor 7. Executive Orders 8. Rainbow Six After that, there are a lot of books that "fill in" the gaps, some very good, some not as good.

Sean Novack

Team Respessta Taco!!

Philip Alan

Glad you loved it.... Hunt for Red October will always be my favorite Clancy story put on screen, but this was certainly my favorite of the Harrison Ford Jack Ryan movies.

Brian Jones

Okay so I'm only 8 minutes into the movie and two things so far. It's Willem Dafoe not William. Also you just got through saying that you recognize one of the guys in the president's meeting. That is Henry Czerny from mission impossible.

Michael Lynch

I thought we agreed on a nap after your run, and my run to Costco?😅 Yer doing too much! Plus don't you have Maverick tonight?

Todzilla

I don't want to start an argument about how wrong I am nor would I expect anyone to agree with me but I think The Sum of All Fears is better than Patriot Games. I really hope she watches that one as well.

Variable38

No notes, go to sleep!

Cole Jennett

Alec Baldwin wanted to continue playing the role of Ryan and there were negotiating with Paramount. But there was some sort of clash between him and a studio executive (who wanted to cast Ford originally even for Red October). So the role eventually landed at Ford and they kind of did a soft reboot, recasting everyone else except James Earl Jones. I think Ford was open to a third movie as well, but didn't like the script so eventually passed on the opportunity resulting in another reboot with Ben Affleck taking over the role. Personally, I think this is the better movie of the two made with Ford. But the best Ryan movie by a long shot is The Hunt for Red October. As for who is the best Ryan, my preference is Baldwin. I've seen his movie first when I was around 10-12 and still remember being glued to the screen. There are two more movies: The Sum of All Fears (2002) with Ben Affleck and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014) with Chris Pine. Both of them are reboots.

Gábor Árki

Ford was good (though my personal favorite Jack Ryan is still Alec Baldwin), but he stopped doing it because he was unhappy with the scripts he was being given. I also believe I remember hearing at the time that there was some tension between him and Tom Clancy. Eventually Paramount just decided to go in a different direction and brought in a younger Ben Affleck to do a sort of reboot of the franchise (like the producers did with Bond and Daniel Craig in CASINO ROYALE) and that became THE SUM OF ALL FEARS directed by Phil Alden Robinson (the guy who did FIELD OF DREAMS and SNEAKERS no less), which for my money is still a good movie. So glad to hear that you enjoyed this one. I also prefer it to PATRIOT GAMES (though HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is still the best imo). Can't wait to watch this reaction. Very curious to see if you recognized Henry Czerny from MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE.

Stick Figure Studios

I think HF didn't want to reprise the role of Jack Ryan after Clear And Present Danger. He was originally the first choice for The Hunt For Red October but he turned it down. After that films massive success, he changed his mind and came on board.

Zane From Canada

Think of the Jack Ryan character like bond. Different actors have played him over the years. The stories are not necessarily connected to each other with the exception that he is a kick ass analyst.

NoobTaco (Mike Norton)

Oh I'm ready for this one. I've got the movie up and ready to play right now. Jumping in 3 2 1...

Michael Lynch

Harrison Ford originally planned to be in the next film, The Sum of All Fears, but eventually dropped out of the project (I can't remember if it was ever stated why). Sum was eventually reworked with Ben Affleck as a younger Jack Ryan.
