I forgot about this movie. I really liked it as an ending to the Rocky series, and of course it was even better with Cassie and Carly there watching it too. The whole series should be 1, 2, 3, 4, and Rocky Balboa. No Rocky 5 and no Creed movies. Creed 1 had a strong beginning but then failed for me because Sylvester made Rocky into a self-deprecating depressing man and the movie just repeats the same formula that gets cheapened when over-used. Creed 2 is an exercise in Sylvester not having enough people around him to say stop it already and move onto different projects because you're hurting this one.

With Full Metal Jacket (1987) you've got Kubrick and Vietnam covered. I'd add Apocalypse Now (1979) to the Vietnam wish list which brings us some Coppola in preparation for the Godfather.

Michael Threapleton

Yes, one of my favorites, not sure how it would do as a “reaction”

Ryan

I would really like to see her react to a Vietnam movie, Platoon or Full Metal Jacket would be my choices. I know people will say the movies are full of racist references but so was Glory. If you're going to portray history it has to be authentic. Paths of Glory is very good.

Darren Hill

You are right and it’s what I watched. I don’t consider it the standard sequel but that’s just my opinion and I could very well be wrong.

Jason Mackey

Cassie, here is a poem Muhammed Ali wrote for Sylvester Stallone.....You fought you worked you're a determined guy....Rocky is great and I love you Sly....If you don't get an Oscar remember, please do.....The Greatest will always get an Oscar....Because I'm prettier than you.

Darren Hill

Patton is an excellent movie.

There isn't a Coming to America remake. There's a sequel. Is that what you watched?

aarswft

As far as Memorial Day movies may I suggest: Patton (A brilliant character study of the WWII general by George C. Scott), We Were Soldiers (Vietnam War movie by Mel Gibson based on true events) and Paths of Glory (directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas, a WWI movie with a courtroom element ).

Stephen Malloy

Sorry..... I seem to have accidentally deleted my first reply to you. But yes there is no doubt Apollo is based on Ali. I won't say much on Million Dollar Baby because I know there are many who would like to see Cassie's reaction to it.

Darren Hill

The vast majority of boxers end up struggling financially when they retire. Muhammad Ali's greatest rival 'Smokin' Joe Frazier who makes a cameo in the first Rocky led a very humble existence in retirement above his Mighty Mick's style gym in Philadelphia. Some like Jack Dempsey and Jake LaMotta opened their own restaurants. As Apollo said in Rocky III, "Once you step out of that ring it's like you're ancient history".

Darren Hill

You're right about "When We Were Kings!" Another good documentary is "Champions Forever." So many things were obvious when "Rocky" came out, which have kinda been lost in time: like the fact that Apollo Creed's character was very loosely based on Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, in his showmanship and good-natured bragging. (The way Creed trash-talked Rocky in "Rocky II" was very similar to Ali's tactics.) ... I don't know if Cassie would enjoy a heavyweight fight, which can be pretty slow, but I'd love for her to see a few rounds of Gatti-Ward, or some of Roy Jones Jr. .... And, someday, I hope she gets to see the great Lucia Rijker, acting in Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby!"

As far as sports movies, I wish you had gone with Draft Day with Kevin Costner for this weekend. Very good movie, and the event it's based on is going on right now.

And yea no BS, my Brother in Law did like over writing or post writing in LA for decades, and sis was at Academy's for a bit. UCLA paid more though so. He also did a little, just on his cam Documentary after moving back to Ohio "cause didn't want their son growing up in LA" Goodnight Sugar-babe. Hes done tuns of camera work before any writing. His Fox movie division writing was more him and a group going over a script, and just touching up parts. So not a big name, but? https://youtu.be/04GQZIFEFqs

I’m not normally a remake fan but after being disappointed in watching the new “Coming To America” and “Footloose” the third time and a new genre may be the charm for me.

Jason Mackey

True. I dont hate on 1970 Oscar films. But I think a great Popcorn 80s 90s flick is her bread and butter. (Butter, popcorn 🤔.) These films are good. Not to say the Oscar films all stink. ET wouldn't get one then lol. But my brother in law (writer at Fox since 90s, passed in Dec.) and sis (worked at where else, Academy's, then UCLA) Would debate and talk with my dumb *** about how some great films, are just not for most people, and why. Dave had a whole theory on this, because he believed the "" blockbuster vs the Award winner argument was a valid point. He said the best way I ever worded it, was. (I play guitar and piano) Thus I said, "You ever go see Jason Vieaux play?" they were like who? "Jason Vieaux, Grammy Award classical guitar guy. Amazing to watch." They were like no. I said "OK think of it that way. Hes the best of the best there, but his concerts are not huge, neither is the following." They were like yea, ok. So I said, "But you do know of Kiss, Madonna, ToTo, Queen, Genesis, Bruce or AC/DC. Big concerts and tuns of fun music, and huge followings. But what if I said Jason Vieaux was by far the more schooled and talented musician." Dave replied with, yes I get the point. But is he truly more entertaining? I said "well to me as a player its equal and art, which is subjective. To you, no its not." In basic thats my Oscar theory. Not to say cool movies that are blockbusters don't win. A lot of great popcorn style movies do win, but a lot of Jason Vieaux of movies also win too. And rightly so, despite not being the big thing for most. If that makes sense.

Michael J

This one was better then 5 by far. But 1 and 2 are still the best.

The next generation of filmmakers will.

What's truly unique about the ROCKY series is not just that it's a franchise spanning almost half a century, that its characters age in real time or that it has at least one entry in every decade since the '70s (some of the same things could be said of the James Bond, Mission: Impossible and Harry Potter movies), but that it's arc essentially mirrors that of its creator/star Sylvester Stallone. When Stallone wrote the screenplay to the first ROCKY, he was a nobody, a poor underdog with dreams of making it big. Someone took a chance on him and he became a success. Hence, in the sequel, Rocky wins the fight. By 3, Stallone was a rich megastar with clout in his industry... and so is Rocky. With 4 both actor and character became so big that they achieved cultural icon status. By the time of 5, the glow of both was fading. It's ironic but appropriate that the story involves Rocky being brought down so low because that's what happened to Stallone with the movie. It was the poorest-received film in the franchise (critically and commercially) and it looked like the end of the line for Rocky: a great series/character going out not with a bang but with a whimper. Rocky was a has-been and it looked like Stallone might be too. Then, 15 years later, Stallone returns with ROCKY BALBOA and an attempt to prove that both he and Rocky are still relevant, that they still had something to contribute, something to say... and they proved it. This one was the critical and commercial success that ROCKY 5 was not. This was the real end of Rocky's story. Until writer-director Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER) approached Stallone with a terrific idea for a reboot that brought new blood into the ongoing story and turned Rocky's character into a mentor. This is Stallone the filmmaker handing off the reins of his popular creation to the next generation of cinematic artists. This is a great series, mainstream Hollywood genre storytelling elevated to the level of personal expression. This is art, Stallone's magnum opus (surpassing even RAMBO and EXPENDABLES) and it will be talked about as long as movies are talked about.

A good script, better storyline and direction than the previous three installments,Rocky was becoming a graphic novel character,Rocky Balboa brought the grieving lost family into the story..RIP Adrian💜..forget Rocky V it's in the past !, bring on Creed & Creed 2..

One thing that makes this movie special is the amount of "real" boxing people involved. Antonio Tarver (Mason Dixon) held championships in three different weight classes, and defeated the great Roy Jones Jr. The HBO announce team is real, and the sleazy promoter (the one who's balding) is Lou DiBella, a real boxing promoter. The referee, Joe Cortez, is one of the best referees working, and of course Michael Buffer the announcer . . .As they mentioned during the fight, Rocky was doing something similar to George Foreman, who won the heavyweight title at the age of 45, 20 years after losing it to Muhammad Ali. ... By the way ladies, the dog in the early movies was named Butkus, after Dick Butkus, a football player. It wasn't "Butt-kiss."
