Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Full Reaction

Ok wow this one was bizarre to think about. I feel like I was inside my head a lot during this, I'm sorry if it feels that way as a reaction. I was really amazed at Jim Carey and how much I believed he was this awkward guy.  I thought they both did amazing in not their usual roles. What a concept, full circle, a lot to think about, really glad I watched this one. Thank you Tyler for picking this!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Full Reaction

Comments

'Everybody's gotta learn sometime...' So much potency in these words

Hail to the King

Thank you for reacting to this stunning and creative movie. Kate Winslet was nominated for an Oscar for her awesome performance. Jim Carrey did transform himself into that character.

Clay F

Being John Malkovich and this are my fave films that came from the ingenious mind of Charlie Kaufman. Copy

Will Zamora

Adaptation is another interesting one.

Will Zamora

Thanks for the movie company this was a fun one. Definitely a head scratcher and lol, I knew the 'blank faced' people would freak you out. "Blah blah blah, I'm a dirty ho". That caught me completely off guard lol. I was getting ready to press play on my copy and almost hurt my neck doing a double take on that one like "what did she just say?!" lol. and you stumped me too, look at you well on your way to becoming a master. "Is everyone like me when you're watching this and wondering what your life would be like if you erased someone?" Well...now I am lol. And side note yes, watching movies when it's raining is great. Also watching a rainy movie while raining. If it's pouring on an early fall evening I always get the urge to watch Panic Room.

Erik Daniel

Great movie. A similar theme to Arrival I think, in that both pose the question: if we know that a thing is going to end in heartbreak - a relationship here, raising a child in Arrival - would we do it anyway? Just for the experience, because the journey is more important than the destination, or perhaps just to indulge our foolish hopes that *this time* maybe it will be different? Both movies suggest our human instinct is to say "yes, let's do it, even if it hurts in the end," and I quite agree.

Robin T

Not yet. It's very high on my list ( I've been re-watching the David Mamet canon). I've heard great things about it. Would you include it in the "essential Kauffman" list?

Michael Threapleton

A great reaction, as always! This is one of my favorite movies, and one that I don't think I've seen any other reactor watch. Thank you very much for this choice. If you'd like another great movie with a famous comedian in a non-comedy, I highly recommend "Lost in Translation," starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. It's another one of my favorite movies, and just like this one, it is a movie about love, regret, optimism, and moving forward.

Wally Hartshorn

Have you seen I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS yet?

Stick Figure Studios

I may be in the minority here, but I think Charlie Kauffman is a genius. This movie is far from his best but still worthy. The following quartet is my "essential Kauffman" and I encourage any fellow cinéastes to delve deep into these films: Being John Malkovich (1999) - let this wash over you. Adaptation (2002) - Nicholas Cage's greatest work; Chris Cooper got best supporting oscar Synecdoche, New York (2008) - "I did rub a dub dub at the Pantages" Anomalisa (2015) - greatest animation/puppetry film of all time No realistic chance any of these will be reviewed on this channel but one can hold out hope for a trivia winner selection.

Michael Threapleton

This is one of my favorite science fiction movies. No overblown expensive special effects budget, just simple good storytelling. And I like that it’s disguised as a romantic tale that sucks in the non-usual demographic. 😁 It certainly deserved the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay that year. Great reaction!

Mr. Writhms

This is another one I’ll be skipping unfortunately. I saw this once and ended up not caring for it. Never got the appeal for it.

Joe M

I second this.

Stick Figure Studios

please watch The Majestic My favorite Jim Carrey Movie

zynjams

This is one of my all-time favorites. Romantic movies tend to be more up-beat, but this one manages to be much more deeply (and philosophically) about love than any of the rest, even though so much of it is traumatic and depressing. The final moment is what makes it all worth it, when Joel says, "Okay"; when they start crying, it's like cathartic relief, releasing the tension from all that transpired before. The relief of acceptance and forgiveness. It's really a lesson too many people don't learn until it's too late, and this movie does a great job of demonstrating it without the viewer having to go through what these characters did. Joel and Clementine gave themselves a second chance, and we would be so much better off if we could all grow enough to do the same. Don't worry about not saying enough, Cassie. You said so much with your eyes, we can tell you were really into it :)

Dan

The thing about Jim Carrey is that, while he's very well known for his over the top comedy movies, he's an excellent actor and pretty much all the more serious roles he's had, he's been stellar, even if the movies themselves weren't great, he was.

AzraRillian

I think your reaction is exactly what the filmmakers were going for. It's meant to make you think "would I do this if I could?" I think at some point, if even for just a second, we've all wanted to erase someone from our memory, and that makes this a pretty universal story. And your response is pretty universal too. Just means you're human.

Gary Giaimo

Great pick! I love this movie. Great cast, great performances, wonderful story. I love the way the story plays out. Definitely a movie that you can pick up on so much with multiple viewings. This was fun to see your reactions.

Robert Avila

Another great reaction :D "Maybe this is a comedy because Jim Carey is always funny." ... "I don't think he's going to be funny." And the realization at 1:31+ of the movie was especially great.

Planner

One of the many movies I’ve wanted to watch but not gotten around to it yet lol. so I’ll be watching it for the first time as well.

Dean Holt

Great choice by the winner! I honestly forgot how amazing this movie is, I saw it when it was just out, but watching it well older now I really appreciate it in a way I couldn't back then. Hurts a little because Kate Winslet's character REALLY reminds me of someone who was a lot like her, but sometimes it's that pain that reminds you that you're still alive, and every day above ground is a chance for a miracle 🤘🤓

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

This reaction only makes me want to see Cassie see Memento (2000) even more.

tiny baby kitty man

I also think being in your head is something you end up weighing in relative terms. She clearly was in her head, but I also felt like she spoke a normal amount -- it just felt like less because so much was going on elsewhere. Plus, of course, the real key is engagement, and she was clearly really invested in it, even when it was sad.

Tyler Foster

Robert De Niro was originally slated for the part but the shoot for Godsend ran long and he had to cancel. I think it worked out.

Grinznmore

To me, it actually says a lot about Cassie's reactions, that I would subject myself to this movie for a second time! My wife talked me into this movie when it was new and at the end, she didn't even like it. I liked her reaction, though. That's always a given.

Craig Russell

Jeez, Jim Carrey is mad talented.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I tried to like this movie but just never did. Was rooting for Moonstruck but I'm curious about Cassies reaction so....looks like I'm watching it again.

nick bell

Logic is not alway deep or film school. Sometimes its logical to know somethings fun. Just saying

Michael J

I keep hearing Truman Show. If they didn't see it. I second that as another. After the not as deep (but come on guys, just fun logic too) She'll love ET! Tell me I'm wrong and why? I wont get upset. But I know, that you know, that I know that you know 😛 shell like it.

Michael J

I love this movie. It is among my top favorites, so really glad Cassie chose this one from the list. It is such a beautiful, bittersweet story raising so many questions, thoughts and emotions that stay with you for days after watching the movie. Vaguely, but I still remember the experience watching it for the first time piecing the story together in my head. But for me this is a movie that is equally enjoyable to rewatch multiple times. Such great performances from Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Most people indeed only know Carrey from his comedic roles but he is actually a really great actor. For me, this is probably his best dramatic performance. I always felt a level of connection to Joel because I find him so similar to my own personality. Probably one of the reasons this movie resonates so much with me. Also, I always found Clementine's quirky, spontaneous, eccentric personality super intriguing. Whenever I see someone having her hair dyed to blue or orange I immediately start thinking of this movie and Clementine. Cassie, I think it was a good reaction. I don't think talking though a reaction is a necessity, sometimes it is more than enough just to see your expressions taking in and enjoying a movie. Especially liked the "oh my gosh" moment after "Meet Me in Montauk". I guess that was the time when you connected all the dots and realized what did you see at the very beginning.

Gábor Árki

I cant word it as well as you. But every time I see it, I'm happy with the end. But their is a side of me that wonders what dilemmas that would cause? Would you try and avoid being, in fear it might ruin things. Cause thats not really a way to live. Or did they accept that was to be, and were willing to go threw it anyways. Time and butterfly stuff always fascinated me. The fact that the .000000001 of a second that just past now, changed a lot. And that your always in the fraction of a second, never before or behind it. I can sit and think about that stuff all night. I understand the base logic as much as we can, but its still fascinating. As this movie kind of pulls that off, without moving time.

Michael J

He also has The Truman Show and The Majestic. The dude is a great actor.

My_Cousin_Mose

It's streaming on peacock. If you haven't subscribed there yet I think they offer a free week.

My_Cousin_Mose

Haha to each their own. This might be my favorite Jim Carry film (though I'm not saying it's his best work).

My_Cousin_Mose

Knowing the "twist" makes you view the whole movie differently. Definitely better on your 2nd or 3rd watch.

My_Cousin_Mose

Damn, I should've thought about Sense and Sensibility. I agree, great movie and another one that Cassie will really love. I mentioned above that if she had not seen Little Women (2019), I would've considered it. I feel like Sense and Sensibility scratches the same basic itch.

Tyler Foster

If you're looking for more Kate Winslet, I recommend SENSE & SENSIBILITY. I think you would like that one. Also, TRUMAN SHOW is another great Jim Carrey movie.

Stick Figure Studios

As I always say, sometimes you are hard on yourself for asking questions but you pegged it pretty early on: everyone is the sum total of their own experiences, good and bad, and even if something is painful, it contributes something to who we are, and just deleting that to feel better in the moment is doing ourselves a disservice. It was also really fun watching it click together for you that the beginning was the ending and that Joel and Clementine were going to find each other again despite the procedure. A couple of small tidbits I like or find interesting: Joel can't see Patrick's face properly because when the movie shows him going to the bookstore and seeing Patrick there, his face is obscured, which is why he can't turn him around when he returns to that moment in his memory and why Patrick looks horrific in the doctor's office memory. Speaking of that doctor's office memory, that is one of a few times in the movie where something that seems like a visual effect was simply done practically. Carrey walks in the door, confronts Mierzwiak, and then it pans over to memory Carrey at the table. When it pans away from the Carrey at the door, he simply takes off his hat and jacket, walks behind the camera, and sits at the table. Similarly, in the scene where they're at the flea market and they argue about the baby, eventually Clementine becomes blurry, which is achieved just by putting a pane of frosted glass between them. One of the sadder little things is that when Joel and Clementine "meet" a second time on the train, Joel doesn't know any jokes about Clementine's name, because he hid her in the memory of his mother singing "My Darling Clementine" while bathing him as a baby, and Mierzwiak deleted it in the course of deleting Clementine. Director Michel Gondry came up through music videos, and many of them are really visually memorable and creative like this one. He has done many Bjork videos (I love "Hyperballad" and "Bachelorette"), the Kylie Minogue video "Come Into My World," and the famous videos for Daft Punk's "Around the World" and The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With a Girl" (although my favorite Gondry/Stripes collaboration is "The Denial Twist"). Glad you enjoyed it, even if it was a lot to process!

Tyler Foster

I was also gonna suggest SENSE & SENSIBILITY.

Stick Figure Studios

The 2019 Little Women is on her Letterboxd, which is a movie I probably would have considered if she hadn't already seen it. I also like the 1994 one (and I have the earlier ones to watch as well), but I felt like Greta Gerwig's adaptation was the best movie of that year.

Tyler Foster

It is a little disappointing to see folks who don't (can't?) recognize that others have different opinions from them. That's kinda the thing about art.... I try not to comment on the movie reactions to movies I don't care for...I just...don't watch that one. *shrug* Other people liking something doesn't hurt me just because I don't. (I love this movie, btw, and have been very much enjoying the reaction!)

Jessi

I love this movie so much. I LOVED watching how scandalized you were by how unprofessional the Lacuna group employees were. I mean, who DOES that in someone else's house while they're unconscious?? Thank you for this one. :)

Jessi

Can’t stand this movie so I’ll be passing on this one. Glad to hear Cassie enjoyed it. Hopefully we will get some good ones next week. I’m so ready for all the Star Wars to be over with and move onto something good. I know I know. I will get hate for my lack of Star Wars love but I just don’t like that franchise. Ready to see her do more suspense and drama. Those reactions are so enjoyable.

brooke atkins

glad you liked it. visually imaginative, emotionally resonant and philosophically thought provoking. it's a lot of things for many people. i hope you get more out of each viewing.

Wu Sha Ling

Jim Carrey is really underrated as a dramatic actor. Man on the Moon is spectacular, and The Number 23 is a pretty good horror/Thriller

Matt Gwinn

This was exactly how I felt when I saw it the first time shortly after it came out. I will be giving it another shot when I watch it with Cassie tonight.

Cole Jennett

Honestly don't get the attitude of some of you guys. Haven't watched along yet but "really glad I watched this one. Thank you Tyler for picking this!" suggests she liked it. And still, one of the first comments I see reads "should have gone with (my personal preference)" SMH

Jay

Didn't care for this one at all. Love Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet but this movie was like finally getting reservations at a great restaurant and finding out they're serving food from another planet. Sigh.

Paul Murphy

Such a cool movie. I love SciFi, Fantasy (Harry Potter, E.T.) Horror, Sport (with emotion, Rocky, Remember the Titans, etc,) The John Hughs coming of age thing, And unique. This falls under unique, and yet uniquely emotional too. Great film. Haven't even watched reaction yet. Might edit this latter. Yea I haven't watched a few reactions in a while. But older films, no. I didn't watch but only blockbusters when small. Was always out, or doing like the practice thing, race, etc. Im not big on typical films (outside my list.) Maybe a Die Hard lol. But cop films and court, I lived in Miami for a good period so that was like typical life kind of. I have well rounded solid tastes, but also unique ones to at times. Say for instance, my fav Netflix show is actually a SciFi unedited version called" The Magicians". A adult College romp, that meets Harry Potter, with a touch of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, meets freaky adult American Pie. Oddest show,,,,, But a 9.5 rated show to. And Lock and Key, Shadow of the Bone, or whatever the name is etc, etc. Of course Stranger Things. Shell like this,,,, And I haven't seen a reaction yet,,, If its not to odd to her.

Michael J

Thats one of my styles I like. Just new, unique

Michael J

While we're on the subject of weird and wonderful films, would anyone else like to see Cassie react to a Terry Gilliam film? "Brazil" is my all time favourite film and I'd be especially curious to hear Cassie's thoughts on it.

Jake McNulty

I look forward to watching this with you. Will have to find my copy.

Yaisu

Kaufman is one of those creators who almost invariably rubs me the wrong way (George Miller is another). This is one of his movies that I can kind of appreciate, though. I can't love it, but I can in an abstract way admire it. It also has some beauty to it entirely lacking from his next two, which I spent two hours each watching thinking: "What a miseryguts; and also he's not nearly as clever as he thinks he is"

Henry Fitzgerald

this movie was horrible . so many great movies out there especially starring Jim C ,

zynjams

One of my favorite films of all time. Charlie Kaufman tends to write movies that are very cerebral and trippy but also attaches a lot of emotion in them. I love how this story deconstructs a failed relationship.

Philthemovieguy

You've seen LITTLE WOMEN? Which version? If it's the one with Winona Ryder, how did you not recognize Gabriel Byrne from it when you watched USUAL SUSPECTS? :-O

Stick Figure Studios

Being John Malkovich and this are my fave films that came from the ingenious mind of Charlie Kaufman.

If you want more Kate Winslet in a radically different role and setting, I would suggest Mare of Easttown.

Charade (1963) Moonstruck (1987) Riding in Cars With Boys (2001) Ghostbusters [Extended Cut] (2016)

Mr Jordan

One of my favorite films of all time, gets better with multiple watches, thanks for the reaction

Matt

Beautiful, imaginative, thought-provoking movie. It was worth going through all those Rocky shorts to get this one. Great pick Tyler.

Mr Jordan

Written by the brilliant Charlie Kauffman and directed by the visionary Michel Gondry, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND is one of the most original and profound love stories in quite a while... and what a cast too (Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood) all giving terrific performances. Films like this are why I love film to begin with. So glad you watched it. Can't wait to see your reaction.

Stick Figure Studios

I'm one of the rare people that didn't like this movie lol. I'm very curious as to what the other movies on his list were 🤔

Philip G.

I'm so glad you watched this one, it's one of my all-time favorites, and one of my favorite Charlie Kaufman scripts (tied with Adaptation). But I'm also curious what the other movies were that Tyler suggested!
