Years of Oscar's Past Poll

Hey hey you you!

Here is the link to the videos from my Instagram today when I made the draw!

So today on Instagram (linked the video above) I put decades from 1940-1970 and years 1980-2020 in a popcorn bucket and pulled a year! I am going to continue doing this monthly right now and put a poll of the Oscar nominees from that year's Oscars in the poll.

I picked 1994!

The 1994 Oscar Best Picture Nominees were:

Schindler's List ( Winner) (have a reaction to it)

The Fugitive  (have a reaction to it)

The Piano

In the Name of the Father

The Remains of the Day

So based on that list there would only be 3 in the poll. It seems from your discussion these are great movies and it could have just been them, I thought about combining years but instead I am also going to include "Philadelphia" (Tom Hanks won best actor for it that year) and "In the Line of Fire" (which was also nominated for a lot of awards that year)

I know next to nothing about any of these options, so should be fun!

Ps-this was also the year of "Jurassic Park" (highest grossing) "Sleepless in Seattle"(heart eyes) and "The Firm" (3rd highest grossing that year)

Comments

I totally agree!!! Philadelphia is amazing and should be a must watch on Cassie’s list. Oscar winning film.

brooke atkins

@Björn Von Knorring It was actually a pretty strong year. She just didn't pick the strongest for the Poll. She could have added: Tombstone, Demolition Man, Dazed and Confused, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, True Romance, Falling Down, Army of Darkness, Dave, or the best Batman movie Mask of the Phantasm.

Steve Miller

I think the plot would hold up very well today. While this film deals with discrimination against those with AIDS it can easily be updated as a modern allegory of, say, the current discrimination against the transgender community.

Kevin M. Pitts

@Hanukkah: You are correct. Contrary to Bjorn's confounding statement, 1993 was a very strong year in film.

Stick Figure Studios

Nope, dead serious.

Richard Maurer

The amount of gatekeeping in all the reactor comment sections I'm in is crazy. And I know because occasionally I'm guilty of it (what can I say, the Star Wars sequel trilogy brings out the worst in me). But the " How DARE you like/dislike something that I dislike/like" gets pretty crazy sometimes. Now, I'm a big boy and I can handle it, but I'm sure some gentler souls get scared away from the comment section.

Richard Maurer

Am I the only one who doesn't find Scream scary? For that matter I never really liked it at all, it's one of the most over-rated horror movies I've seen. There are plenty of really good horror movies to watch, instead of that snooze-fest.

Richard Maurer

I've seen both CITY OF ANGELS and WINGS OF DESIRE, so I can compare them. One is a truly great film. The other is... not. It's the difference between a fine French cuisine four-course meal and a microwavable TV dinner.

Stick Figure Studios

Shouldn’t you be somewhere in Utah stalking Cassie like the weirdo creep you are?

Shehab Dawoud

Disagree about Philadelphia not being remarkable.

Shaun Ganyo

"One" thing that annoys you Shish Kebab? Your entire existence is one never ending boring bitch fest about what annoys you. Everyone is really interested.

Shaun Ganyo

I refreshed my memory by looking up the movies of 1991-1995, and I don't see much of a case for 1993 being noticeably weaker than the rest.

Happy Hanukkah

Is Scream less scary than Halloween? I would say so, mainly because it's part satire of films like Halloween. I think there's some big laughs in between the scary bits of Scream. Also, I just had a look at the end of the YT edit of Halloween. She was fine, happy as Larry giving her final thoughts. She did say "that was terrifying", but with a big smile on her face. If Scream ever shows up on a poll and wins, I think she'll be OK:)

Jay

@Jay do you think Scream is that less scary then Halloween? Because Cassie seemed pretty freaked out after that one and most Horror fans do not think Halloween is as scary as Scream. It is all about perspective and I think Scream might be a little much for her. I would still love to see her react to it.

Mark Sylvester

Not a very strong year. Philadelphia is good since most stuff Tom Hanks touches is good but it's not remarkable in any way.

Björn Von Knorring

What is it that Shaq says in those commercials? "Man up!"

Shehab Dawoud

I guess that makes sense as you weren't quite old enough to watch them when they came out and by the time you were they were all at least 15 years old.

My_Cousin_Mose

This was my birth year, but don't know any of those movies

Joseph Rardin

Is there a horror poll coming up? This horror nut hopes so:)

Jay

Would you categorize Scream as too scary? Personally, I think she'd be well able for it, Carly as well. I'd say they'd have fun with the whole whodunnit aspect and Scream, after that brilliantly terrifying opening, is almost as much about laughs as it is scares. Cassie won't get all the nods and references but she'd catch most of them. Many would be totally lost on Carly, she wasn't there for Halloween, Psycho etc.. Scream would spoil the end of the original Friday the 13th though. I'm not actually that keen on the original, I prefer the crappy sequels. Jason Lives was doing meta horror a decade before Scream came along:)

Jay

@Shehab, Agreed!

Mark Sylvester

Cassie limits her horror movie reactions and tries to only do scary but not too scary.

Mark Sylvester

I guess you didn't watch her reaction to The Shining and some others? She's gonna avoid horror movies as best as she can. One thing that does annoy me though, is the notion of only watching horror movies around Halloween. You can watch them any time of the year..

Shehab Dawoud

Love it!!🤣

Krusty “Topher”

But shouldn't we have a vote to see if we want to vote on how we vote in future votes?

Mr Jordan

Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) (1987) Since I haven't seen Angels, I obviously don't know just how similar they are.

Happy Hanukkah

I’d vote on that!! And within two days!!🤣

Krusty “Topher”

Happy- I didn't know there was a German original.

Mike Lemon

Sean voting on your phone within two days is living here? Most of the time the leaders don’t change much after two days. But hey if you need a week to be more convenient for you because you’re so busy you can’t check your phone once in that time then by gum I’m for it!!

Krusty “Topher”

I agree with Mike and Andy, although, I would guess you probably both think I'm part of the problem.

Shaun Ganyo

Mike I guess the Oscars were so good it would make you “slap ya mama!!”

Krusty “Topher”

I haven't seen it. If I eventually do, it will be out of hope that the headliners perform as well as Dennis Franz does in the 2-3 clips I've seen. Have you seen the German original? [Off to listen to some Sarah McLachlan.]

Happy Hanukkah

Happy- hehehe. In my defense those were spread over a couple months (I think. When was Spirited Away?), but you're right I need to keep harping on just one- City of Angels (1998). The only one with a chance of being watched.

Mike Lemon

Well I voted for Philadelphia but I would be fine with “In The line of Fire” winning the poll. John Malkovich was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. But lost to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive that year.

Joe M

Krusty: There are some who also pay money to support Cassie but don't have the time to live here. As much as this may be an inconvenience to you personally, those people deserve to have their vote counted as well.

Sean Novack

Mike, will you please stop overwhelming us with recommendations?! :-)

Happy Hanukkah

Although Philadelphia isn't my kind of film, I do recognize it as a really well made film. Also I wonder if the "subject matter" will still be as hard hitting for younger folks like Cassie as it was back when the film came out?

Todzilla

@Granny- hehehehe. Also, I have recommended The Last Unicorn for animated, Indictment: The McMartin Trial for legal, and a few days ago City of Angels just as one to watch.

Mike Lemon

Gotcha. In addition, this lessens the possibility of gaming the system. On the other hand, there are those who aren't always "on." Whatever. Cassie's will be done. :-)

Happy Hanukkah

If Mike will allow me to present his stance slightly more positively: Please remember that it's not just you and Cassie. If we want Cassie to engage with the community (she currently has over 2500 patrons), it might be best for each of us to reduce our contribution to the torrent she faces each time she checks in. (The standard oversimplification of Kant's categorical imperative: What if everybody acted as I propose to do?)

Happy Hanukkah

When I first saw her Instagram, telling people to wait for the first of the month to join here, I thought she was going to wait till April 1 to put the poll up, but I guess the Oscars was the "hot" topic, amirite?

Mike LL

Krusty, maybe PiB should poll us on whether we would prefer a lightning poll? We could take votes on taking less time to vote! And if that vote goes well, I vote we vote on how we should vote in future votes! I'm going to go outside and get some fresh air. :D

Coleton B.

Mike, the options you presented here are wrong. You should have talked about all the good comments. Why didn’t you talk more about the positivity in the comment section? How about keeping the finger wagging to yourself or just offering up a movie as a recommendation?

granny_goodness

People have their favorite movies.. they comment when their favorite movies aren’t represented….. I’m baffled as to how you could see that as “them being negative”

Jeff Milcheck

Happy I hate when the poll last like 5 days! Two days….done!! Let’s move on!😀🤷‍♂️

Krusty “Topher”

Hmmm I thought I changed it over here Jordan. Maybe just YT! 😀

Krusty “Topher”

If you don't mind my asking, why do you ask?

Happy Hanukkah

What happened to Dr. Jones? What have you done with him?

Mr Jordan

[Be positive. Be positive. Be positive.] Well Andy, I'm glad you've finally come around. (You might want to give it a bit more work, though. "It is no longer fun for me, so nobody should be able to enjoy it." "These comments are all dribble! Dribble, I say! ... Oh dearie me, why are you people so negative?")

Happy Hanukkah

When’s this freakin poll end!!!???

Krusty “Topher”

I could not agree more. I am the point where I wish comments were able to be disabled. You could cut and paste any comment section to any thread because they are all the same dribble. This was a fun place to discuss movies but it has turned into negative place that is no longer fun to participate in.

Andy Hafler

I used to wonder why so many "creators" got burnt out so quickly. From reading the comments here for a while, I no longer have questions. Every poll put up, it's "you should have..." or "why didn't you..." or "these are the wrong options", and every movie put up it's "how could you not like this" or "you liked this one actor, here's a thousand other movies with him in it you MUST watch". It's exhausting just as someone reading, it has to be more so for the creators. How about occasionally keeping the negativity to ourselves or just offering up one movie as a recommendation?

Mike Lemon

dying for Cassie to watch The Piano... oh well

jenny from montana

She can always watch it for the channel at a later date. I don't think it could ever win a poll, but she may choose to watch it. And I also think she'd like it.

Future Boy

I voted for “in the line of fire” because I know Cassie well enjoy it. That said, now that it’s winning, I’m realizing, it’s winning a poll, it technically shouldn’t be in, based on the category. If it had been only the three best picture noms, I’ll bet very few people woukd have voted, because those films were not big box office it’s. Not widely popular, and these polls are popularity polls. I guess it doesn’t matter though. Ultimately, regardless of Best picture nominations, it’s really a poll of five movies Cass would like help in deciding which to watch. Nothing else really matters.

Stephen Aech

Doesn't look like Remains of the Day stand a chance to win but I recommend you watching it in private for yourself. I definitely think you will like it.

Pettson68

Keep coming up with more polls for best pictures between 1945-Present,best director, best actors, best screen play..etc,etc,etc...

Celeste McAllister

I must confess my sins: I have yet to see either In the Name of the Father or The Remains of the Day. I did see that year's Age of Innocence, also with DDL.
