Glory - Full Reaction

Hey guys! At long last, here is the full reaction to Glory. The sound is not great as I had mic issues again (sorry about that!). I'm so sad because this was such a good movie but hopefully you can hear it alright. I couldn't keep it together towards the end. This movie was eye opening and so so sad. Hope you enjoy the reaction and have a great Tuesday!

"I love the 54th." Excellent choice for Black History month.

Clay F

A heartfelt genuine reaction about one of my all time favorite movies ever. I saw this one in history class when I was 17. It ha stuck with me since. Thank you Cassie for an emotional reaction such as that.

Chris Bergbower

I've been meaning to do the watch along thing since you posted it, but circumstances pushed it back to the middle of my vacation. Another wonderful, honest reaction to a serious but amazing film. I think the performances were magnificent. Other commenters have mentioned how the film did not really explain how important Shaw's burial with his men actually was. I am thankful that you were willing to make another tough decision to watch a difficult movie. BTW, the asshole Colonel was James Montgomery (played by Cliff De Young).

David Bennett

It’s been ages that I’ve seen this one. I do remember the first time I saw it, was in 8th grade history class. Needless to say I didn’t appreciate than like I do now as an adult. A well deserved Oscar win for Denzel Washington. Speaking of which there should definitely be a “Denzel Washington movie poll” in the future. Among the choices should be; Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Training Day, Man on Fire, John Q, The Bone Collector, Fallen, Inside Man, Fences. Crimson Tide.

Joe M

Powerful movie. One of the best war movies.

Rick Williams

I remember I was in college when this came out. I was taking an military history class and my professor couldn't stop raving about it. The score was perfection, written by maestro James Horner (R.I.P.) with the Harlem Boys Choir. It also resulted in Denzel Washington's first academy award win.

Brian O'Grady

in regard to the mean tactics used in training, it is necesaary. its to break a person down mentally as well as physically, and then to build them back up as a soldier, well disciplined, mentally and physical capable to carry out orders. when i was in, that was the experience in basic training. you go in as strangers and finish as brothers. things get better when you finish training and join a unit, where the real training occurs with the unit you'll go to battle with. its often said that soldiers fight in war not so much for the cause, but for each other. you guard their life as much as your own and that is the result of hard training - mentally and physically. its a way of life after that becaue it changes you.

ron young

Man I love this movie. Far as I'm concerned it's one of the best war movies ever made.

KTVindicare

The next best Civil War movie that has a heavy impact is 'The Conspirator', with James McAvoy, about the Lincoln assassination. You would be a guaranteed wreck though.

Eddie Collison

The crazy part is the beginning battle "Battle of Antietam" was a Union victory.

RJ MacReady

There are very few moments in time that change the course of the world. The parade if it were true was one of those moments.

Gideon James

Oh, and James Horner's score for this film is astounding. One of the best ever, I think.

Aaron Hawkins

Just watched the full reaction with the film. Wow. I've been watching this film for most of life. It's my 3rd favorite war film after Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan. Usually when I watch Glory, I cry. But just now watching it with you I cried more than I ever have. I just about bawled. But I needed that. Thank you, Cassie. And though I'm curious about the lost the outro , I think the one you ended up using was really great.

Aaron Hawkins

for black history month you should check out To Sir With Love starring Sydney Poitier

Mike Lipke

You will notice at the end that all the dead were stripped of their shoes. The battle of Gettysburg started sooner than expected due to troops looking for shoes.

Jason Mangen

I tried that but SoundFixer didn't recognize the tab as having audio. Perhaps my neophyte status with Firefox in general hampered my success.

Sean Novack

Cassie speaking of drill sergeants did you know who was a drill sergeant in the air force who was mean and tough the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work. It was painter Bob Ross! 🤯🎨

MatthewBrown74m

what did you think?

Gina Houston

Oh boy .....when I saw that this was the movie you were going to watch, I just shook my head. "This will tear her up", I thought. It is a masterpiece, on the one hand but very painful to see.

Emrhys

Just like after watching "Apollo 13", there are lots of great suggestions for follow-up movies. "Lincoln" (2012) and "Gettysburg" (1993) are my two favorites. And of course, Ken Burns "The Civil War" series on PBS is a must see. If you only watch one thing about this time in US history, it's that.

Mr Jordan

Please react to Gettysburg soon! It would mean so much. Much love :-)

Andrew Zayatz

Ha! Sorry Lindsay Wagner, who was TV's Bionic Woman!

Shaun Ganyo

Ok, underrated fun Denzel movie from two years after Glory: Ricochet. Psychological Thriller with a sweet cast. Denzel, John Lithgow, Ice-T, Kevin Pollak, and Lindsey

Shaun Ganyo

i am a history major , the character Thomas in real life turned out to be a great soldier and won many awards including the medal of honor , the first black soldier to be named

Mike Lipke

Very good movie and I think it's pretty accurate in terms of the regiment, its exercise and its development. The only complaint for me is the music. I've seen the film several times, but I always notice that the music is sometimes too loud and often just doesn't match what you see in the film in terms of theme, melody, key and tempo. I know James Horner has composed a lot of very good movie soundtracks and this one isn't bad either, but like I said, it just doesn't add up for me. I'd appreciate it if you checked out 'Gettysburg' (1993) sometime, Cassie, although it's also a war movie about the Civil War. But in my opinion it's pretty accurate respective the battle, very well acted and doesn't have overly gory fight scenes.

Chris Lüders

With all due respect, five generations is a significant amount of time. We're talking about 157 of the 234 years that the United States has been around in it's current form. That's 67% of the age of our nation. When looked at in "the grand scheme" of the age of recorded history, that's not long, but when you consider chattel slavery still exists in Africa and the Middle East to this very day, we've come a long way.

Sean Novack

Never seen this before. Lets hope for quality story telling!

TinCan Cosmanaut

Beautiful reaction to a beautiful movie. I freely admit I shed a tear or two. That’s all I wanted to say.

Robert da Spruce

It's hard to imagine that in the great scheme of things, it wasn't that long ago. My grandmother's father was born when Lincoln was President. She grew up hearing stories about how slaves were treated (I live in the South) and about the Klan that used to be around here.

Drew

Its been years since ive seen this movie and forgot how good Denzel was.

Patrick Toscano

Brilliant suggestion

Wade Watts

The Daytona 500 is coming up on 02/20/2022, Cassie should do Days of Thunder in honor of that. It stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman!!

Craig Russell

I did, and I am rewatching it now (This week) it is a beautiful documentary. I think is Cassie just watched thru the first episode? She would be hooked.

Jon Johns

I noticed in one of your youtube live shows someone sent you the Ken Burn's Civil War Series. I wouldn't expect you to do a live reaction but it is one of the finest documentaries I've ever seen regardless of subject matter. If you want to know more about American's civil war you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to start.

softshoes

Emotional movie! Sad ending, but it wasn’t a tragedy. After being called “boy” their whole lives, their first act of freedom as freed MEN is in service to all those still in bondage? Glory Hallelujah - they would have been saints in another period. I made it all the way they through without a tear until you noticed Trip picking up the American Flag! Most of the moments we remember involve Denzel. Go Figure. I agree, “Lincoln” some day. Thank you for watching this one.

Ike

This is among Morgan Freeman's earlier movie roles but wouldn't consider it his breakout role. That is considered to be Street Smart (1987) - which I never saw so far - earning him an Oscar nomination as best supporting actor. Also, in the same year as Glory, he was nominated for another Oscar as best leading actor in Driving Miss Daisy (1989). This one I have seen and can recommend very much. It is about an elderly Jewish widow and his black driver in the American South during the '50s. Glory is a hard watch. Very inspirational but also very sad at the same time. They literally had to risk everything even just to fight and sacrifice everything just to prove that they are worthy equals of white soldiers. When I first watched the movie I didn't like Matthew Broderick in the role. He seemed so unsure somehow. The second time I realized it is not him unsure in his role as Robert Shaw, but Robert Shaw unsure in his role as a Colonel of the regiment who had to find his place too. But Denzel Washington really stole the spotlight in this one. Also look at Cassie, quoting Unforgiven: "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away everything he's got and everything he's ever gonna have." It seems some parts of that movie still stuck with you.

Gábor Árki

That scene where Denzel is getting whipped is so freaking powerful. I love how he throws his shirt off and he's so brave and strong to take that and stare his colonel in the face as if to say you can't break me.

Michael Lynch

I remember watching this in middle school and not appreciating it. Glad I re-watched w/you

Philip G.

Cassie, you mentioned that you've already watched a bunch of Denzel movies (indeed! he's great.) But may I suggest one that you might not have seen yet: He Got Game (dir. Spike Lee). It might just be my favourite performance of his!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Cassie thank you for reacting to this. This is one of my all time favorite movies. It is hard to watch but unlike most historical movies it is pretty close to the real history. I didn't have many issues with audio on my end except some hissing. Watching movies with you gives me a different prospective on the movie, I appreciate it. Thank you again and keep up the fabulous work.🤗

David Freese

6th grade?’

Cassie

thank you so much Steven for saying that, means so much ❤️

Cassie

he is one of my fav too, which is good and bad because i have seen quite a few of his movies, what is your favorite one?

Cassie

I loved Thomas too, the actor did do incredible!!! I would love to see that memorial one day ❤️

Cassie

i know :( i’m so sorry, so annoying i’m sorry

Cassie

i didn’t. i used to think i was good at recognizing actors from one movie to another but i’ve found since this channel, i am definitely not haha

Cassie

haha the last part made me laugh! Thank you so much for this comment, this makes so much more sense and I appreciate the background information. I need you to “set the scene” for me before i watch every movie please ;). I really do need to see Lincoln now, that’s Daniel Day Lewis right?

Cassie

I love that, i liked his parents (at least how the were portrayed in the movie) i didn’t realize that would be a sign of disrespect, that makes sense for that time though, I am happy he is with his men too

Cassie

thanks Andrew, it really was so so good

Cassie

oh my that was an amazing moment too!!

Cassie

and tom holland sitting up, who knew?! ha

Cassie

what is he nominated for this year?

Cassie

More so today. The military has gotten very good at saving lives (the Golden hour) but that really only changes the killed to wounded ratio.

Steve Colletti

It's true that the Confederate soldiers buried Shaw in that manner as an insult. When Shaw's father was asked if he wanted the Union soldiers to dig out his son's body and send it home, his father refused, lamenting that his son would want to be buried exactly where he was, with his soldiers.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I was in 6th grade and our class got to watch this in history class. That was a really cool day in school.

Michael Lynch

Tooooeeee piiiiiiiiiiiick

Michael Lynch

I don’t think I’ve watched this since the 90’s. Denzel’s performance, in particular, does stick out in my mind though. Looks like it’s available on Hulu. I look forward to watching this one tonight!

Robert da Spruce

I swear, I am quoting History. It was traditional to trade or return the bodies of officers slain in battle during the Civil War. It was practically an automatic courtesy of war. When the Union officers inquired about retrieving Shaw’s body, he was curtly told, “We buried him with his n-words!” I happen to think it would have been his preference.

Lamar Smith

Glad you liked the film. If I hadn't watched it fairly recently with another channel and wasn't already pretty backed up with vids to watch. Then I would have revisted again. It'll have to be the youtube edit this time.

Daryl

Another great movie to continue in this theme would be the Tuskegee Airmen. Andre Braugher (Thomas) plays Benjamin O Davis. Great movie, great cast telling a great story.

Bubba Fett

I don't know what cable provider you have, but Xfiniti has Glory available on demand for free on EPIX channel, if you get that. Also available on Hulu and Paramount +

Bill Poulter

Your Willingness to learn never ceases to amaze me. You just don’t react to movies you immerse yourself in their history that’s why enjoy watching you so much.

Steven Ashford

Nice reaction Tom Holland...err Cassie 😅 All kidding aside, great movie! Denzel Washington is my favorite actor, hope to see more of his films on the channel in the future 😁

Nismo

Dang it!! I just saw the notification and now I have to wait until this evening to watch. Something to look forward to… I used to have this movie recorded on VHS… yes VHS. I must’ve taped it from HBO or something. 😮 Can’t wait to get off work today. Several hours later… Wow… my nose won’t stop running from crying so much. It’s been about 25 years since I saw this movie and honestly, the only thing I remembered was the scene with Trip (Denzel) and the look on his face when he was staring directly at Shaw I will never forget his face at that moment. I was so happy that he won an Oscar for this movie. I’d forgotten how powerful it was when they first got their uniforms and were marching, and even when Shaw gave them permission to be dismissed, but they all stayed. Cassie- do you watch with subtitles? There were a few times when you weren’t sure what was said. They help me when that happens and it also helps when a lot is happening at once and helps me to keep track of character’s name. 🍿

Tara

Rawlins & Trip depicted a real-life hero, Sgt. William H. Carney. He was promoted Sgt in March 1863 & his gallantry on Fort Wagner was the earliest act of African American bravery to be recognized with the Medal of Honor. The NGA in D.C. displays the restored plaster cast of the original memorial seen in the end credits. I was always a big fan of this movie, so I had to see it while I was on a short detail in D.C. So many notable actors but my fav performance is Andre Braugher as Thomas. Fresh out of Juilliard, this was his first movie role but he performed like a pro.

Rose

It's a fantastic series, well worth a look.

Darren Hill

Just FYI to computer users/watchers, you can use the Firefox browser with the SoundFixer extension to boost the volume of Cassie's reaction a lot. It's also useful for those YT videos where all the audio is in one ear (switch it to mono) or not loud enough.

Jeff I.

Just my luck- after many weeks you FINALLY react to a film I’ve actually seen and you have mic issues.

Rosario Cicero

Hi Cassie. You should consider watching the Ken Burns PBS documentary The Civil War. Here is a basic primer for some of the critical turning points of the Civil War. https://www.nationalgeographic.org/article/defining-battles-civil-war/12th-grade/

JediLounger

Thanks for watching this with us, Cassie. A very emotional reaction. Did you recognize one of the Union Generals in the south was the warden from Shawshank Redemption?

Michael Enos

At this point in the war where the movie begins (1862), slavery still existed in the Union. The point of contention between the USA and CSA was secession from the union, not slavery. So legal slavery still existed in the United States in four states (Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland and Missouri) as well as in Washington, DC and newly formed West Virginia, which (ironically) seceded from the rest of Virginia and joined the Union as a brand new state. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation after the Battle of Antietam, but this document only freed slaves in Confederate states. Obviously, they couldn’t enforce it as those states were in a state of insurrection, but the intent was to try and encourage Confederate slaves to flee and head north or rise up in rebellion. Lincoln also wanted to shore up his political support from Northern abolitionists, who constantly said he was moving too slowly on the slavery issue. If you haven't seen it already I HIGHLY recommend the 2012 film LINCOLN, which deals with the last months of the Civil War and Lincoln's efforts to kill slavery completely, despite widespread pressure from all sides to just restore the status quo ante and accept slavery as the price of peace. The corrupt general using Colored Troops regiments to plunder Southern towns for his own profit was played by Bob Gunton, who was also the corrupt prison warden in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. That guy just wouldn’t leave Morgan Freeman alone!

Patrick Flanagan

One footnote that I was surprised they did not include was in reference to Shaw being thrown into the mass grave with his men. The Confederates did that as, in their eyes, a show of disrespect for him, a white man, leading a "colored" regiment. His parents, however, actually stated that they could think of no finer resting place than for him to be buried along side of those he commanded.

Bill Poulter

I haven't seen this movie in a number of years. It's a hard one to watch but I was glad to share it with you. Thank you for another great reaction.

Andrew Rose

Gods and Generals next

William Bryan

Thank you, Cassie, for choosing this film. GIVE 'EM HELL, 54TH! edit: Should anyone be interested, RGS's letters home were eventually collected together and made into a book: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Eyed-Child-Fortune-Letters-Colonel/dp/0820321745/

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman can't beat that. Apparently, Cassie looks like Morgan Freeman when lying on her stomach. 😊

G

Loved your reaction Cassie. War movies rarely have happy endings. But this movie is special. Personally when I first saw it I found the early scene of the young soldier having leg amputated hard to watch. Always remember for every dead soldier in war there are 2 wounded.

Darren Hill

Queue is what you need in this instance (a waiting line). Cue is a direction to action (acting: "when you hear the shot, that's you're cue") or in pool, a cue stick or cue ball (I'm guessing because those two start the action on the table.)

Craig Russell

I've been eagerly awaiting this one, looks like I'm staying up late.

Allen Bond

Denzel will forever be the GOAT. 🐐First Oscar win and he's even nominated again this year. Still the best.

Alex Villarreal

yes !!! but must wait until tomorrow night

Mike Lipke

Okay, looks like I’m staying up late to watch this one. I didn’t even know this Oscar winner was in the queue. (BTW someone educate me on the difference between cue & queue).
