The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Here is the full reaction to The Count of Monte Cristo from 2002. Carly joined me on this one and it was so fun! Unfortunately there are audio issues as I didn't realize my mic was dead when we turned on the camera. Luckily I always have my phone recording audio as backup and to help sync.. anyway this lasted till about 50 minutes in when we took a break and the camera mic kicked in when we started up again (still not the greatest quality).

So with all that said, the first half of the movie, including the intro are bad quality audio (you can hear random things like the movie more than usual and Ben rallying our kids to bed). I'm so sorry about that!! Hopefully it's not to annoying. Enjoy!

"I am a Count, not a Saint."

I guess this is one of the ones that hasn't yet been migrated from vimeo to unlisted youtube.

Zachary Carter

I love this movie. And I love yours and Carly's reactions.

Rick Williams

Not only was the first Dumbledore, he was the better one in my opinion. Michael Gambon was quite good, but Harris' version felt closer to the books. He made Dumbledore feel more dangerous, and made you wonder if he was a little bit cracked. It's such a shame we only got him for the first two movies :(

Patrick Egan

Couldn't agree more, and was in fact about to suggest the same thing!

Cade

Oh boy this was one of my favorite FAVORITE movies.

LordGrailKnight

If you liked this one, the next movie you should watch with Carly is The Mask of Zorro.

John Casamassa

It's sad but reasonable for Edmond to be so angry at Mercedes BECAUSE he loved her. The saying "There is a thin line between love and hate" is true because both are strong, passion filled emotions.... there is also another saying I came across: "The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference" which kinda makes the same point imo.

BJ Stephens

This was great, makes me want to take up HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) again. It also reminds me of The Man in the Iron Mask. Which is one of my favs of Leo.

David RedEagle

Thats pretty amazing that he sustained those injuries during the filming. Coincidence? I think not.

My_Cousin_Mose

It depends what do you consider the "right" ending, because the book ends quite differently. Although I do see why some (especially like Cassie and Carly) would prefer this movie ending, for me it feels a bit out of place and a too Hollywoodish.

Gábor Árki

I read the book in high school, and it is my favorite book of all time - read multiple times. However, the ending is VERY different. Earlier film adaptations are closer to the book’s plot which ends tragically. The entire book is themed against the moral lesson of hate and revenge. When this movie first came out, I was really disturbed by the Hollywood “happy ending“. This is the first time it hasn’t bothered me, and I actually enjoyed it. Why? I knew how completely upset you guys would be with the true ending and that you would love this one where he gets the girl and the family :-) I adore you guys! It’s double the fun when your sister joins. Your reactions are so authentic and make me smile.

Houston727Gal

which ones are you talking about?

Connor P

Agreed. I imagine that was typical of many nobles Pre-revolution. What Cassie said in her reaction - that Napoleon screwed over Abbe & Edmond - is a diluted form of the same classism. By taking advantage of Edmond's innocence and illiteracy, he adopted the same thinking as Mondego. It's actually more messed up because he was meant to be the face of the revolution, but ended up betraying it by crowning himself emperor.

ArsTropica

(My message wasn't finished) Don't ever watch another "Count of Monte Christo" movie. Others don't end right! Some have the girl leaving him, others have the boy not accepting him. This is the only one that ends right!

lee pagnini

I was just thinking that this is a movie you should react to a couple of days ago! Can't wait to see this reaction!

J.p. Gill

Now you have a problem!!! Don't

lee pagnini

I‘m not married but if I was and I died and my wife would marry my best friend within a month you better believe there‘d be some Poltergeistin going around.

Classic theme!

I have always wondered whether Mondego's bigotry was the root cause of his evil or whether he was just plain evil from the start. The film gives him enough self-awareness to understand that his hatred of Edmond came out of admiration. But even with a sword to his chest, he still kept up the whole "my class makes me better" routine. It feels as though there was some essential subtext from the book that didn't quite make it over to the film, perhaps due to pacing concerns. Bits of historical context like the prevailing attitudes towards class during the Ancien Regime and the French Revolution may have made him a more rational and less of a psychotic "poopy-pants" type of villain.

ArsTropica

I loved this movie so I was so excited you girls watched it. I knew you'd like it but I was honestly surprised over how quickly you both got into it! Watching you put the pieces together was awesome! One slight suggestion or maybe a request. When both of you are doing the reaction it may be better to position differently like a bit apart to allow for a pop up between you or not centered on camera to allow for it to one side, this is to give us a better area for a pop up screen. At the bottom as it is, I frequently have to almost cover one of you which defeats the purpose. Your reactions alone don't have that issue it's only when it's both of you. I do not say this to be in any way critical. I adore your reactions, I just want to make sure I can enjoy both of yours. 🥰

Midgey_M

So we've determined what the perfect Cassie and Carly movie is - heroes, villains, good wins over evil, and of course, romance... ya, this was great! Thanks ladies!

Terry Yelmene

Show you the Movie "The Count of Monte Christo" from 1975 with Richard Chamberlain

Daniel Fuchs

I have not seen either of those!

Cassie

Hey Bill! We are working on getting that fixed. Vimeo recently changed the way embeds work and those earlier videos were posted differently than they are today. Should be fixed by tomorrow afternoon! Sorry about that!

Cassie

This, and this is saying a lot, but this just might be your best yet!! All of your episodes have been gold but this one was special! Well done!!

Jon Brown

Always loved this movie. I forgot how young Henry Cavill was in this. lol

Doug Fisher

Damn! That movie was pretty good! I had seen it when it first came out. But I totally forgot everything. The Witcher. Dumbledore. I didn’t remember any of it! Throw in Cassie and Carly’s reaction, and I enjoyed myself thoroughly! Great reaction ladies! Great pick! Look forward to the next one!

Robert da Spruce

Now I feel like it would be neat to see you guys watch a movie where Guy Pearce is the good guy. Ravenous is probably a bridge too far but Memento would be interesting I think, assuming you haven't seen it.

tiny baby kitty man

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) is one of those films you can watch over and over again. Just a great story. And it's always a treat watching Cassie and Carly cheer and smile, reacting to good films.

G

To have Jesus, Dumbledore and a young Superman in the same movie is quite a treat

Sean Stuart

I second this!! Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is good. Love Kevin Costner. Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman (Snape) are also in it and of course a love story for Cassie 🍿

Tara

I'm new to this site, so does somebody know why full reaction videos before mid August are not available?

Bill Moser

Ha! I was going to leave a comment about this book being mentioned in Shawshank also. I remember when they were separating the books for the library and the inmate, I think his name was Heywood, he was the fan of Hank Williams music. I remember when he pronounced it as Dumass, Andy corrected him and said “Du-mah” Then Andy said that he’d like it because it’s about a prison break and Red chimed in saying it should be put under educational. LoL Great reaction! Since you like this, you should check out The Man In The Iron Mask with Leo DiCaprio. Also a book by Dumas about the four musketeers🍿

Tara

is it bad that i was laughing maniacally at how abhorrent Mondego became? Dude was so nonchalantly courting Mercedes after committing the most disgusting betrayel ever. He was so evil i just started laughing.

Sahitya

You know you've created some hate-able villains. When a smuggler who initially had our hero knife-fight a member of his crew upon first meeting. (Luigi Vampa) And a man who tried to swindle his friends out their share of gold. (Let's not forget why that Knife fight between Jacopo and Edmond happened in the first place). Are way more likeable than any of the villains in this story. Danglars is a conniving, coward who's whole motivation is getting passed over for a promotion. Who later ends up pushing his former boss out of his business, when that same boss could've very easily have fired him instead. Villefort is a career bureaucrat (so he already has points against him) who sentences an innocent man to one of the worst prisons in France. Just to avoid the embarrassment of having it come to light that his father's involved in a Napoleonic plot. On top of that he has his father assassinated. But Mondego has to be the absolute worst, his motivation comes down to. "Instead of being happy for you, I'm gonna ruin your life and steal your girlfriend." Add on top of that just his general arrogance and his adultery (not uncommon in upper-class arranged marriages in those days, but considering Mercedes was a fishmonger's daughter their marriage was a "love match" which makes him cheating on her once he's bored that much worse) and you've got a recipe for worst villain of the movie.

Phillip Ribbink

- Seen this movies about 50 times. I still like to jump about half way through (after escape) and do laundry on a Sunday! Skips the prison and right into the revenge and redemption:) - Edmond doesn't escape until an hour in the movie. It definitely can be seen as a slow start. I love this approach vs some that have the early stuff as flash backs. That format puts to much emphasis on the 'mystery' of what happened - In one of the deleted scenes, Villefort's gun went off. Test audiences said they preferred it not being loaded - There is a different romance (that you would like as much) plot line - This was Henry Cavil's second role. Albert wasn't the son in the books. I personally liked the ending for the book more (though this is still my favorite movie) because Albert went to regain the honor his father lost and Mercedes retired to the country with the startup money Edmond Dantes (not the Count) had left for her. Less cliche - Technically, Jesus (Monte Cristo) and Dumbledore (Priest) were in this movie - Guy Pierce (Fernand) is awesomely vile in this movie. Having his be the friend in this adaptation is a good move to strengthen the revenge, shift the balance around, and give a more of a central antagonist - James Frain plays a fantastic Villefort. Probably the most consistent character across all adaptations. He is the law. - Danglar was more of an antagonist in the books. All three had a better balance IMO. Fernand lost his honor/titles, Danglars lost his wealth, and Villefort destroyed his reputation - The spider web of characters in the original is insanely rich and complex, yet almost feels close and intimate in the book.

Connor P

Cassie, I absolutely loved this reaction from you and Carley. This film is a favorite of mine and has some amazing actors. If an unvarnished story of the last days of Christ appeals at all, "The Passion of the Christ" is an excellent film starting Jim Caviezel as Jesus. The story of the filming of the movie is amazing...the 150 pound cross falls on him, forcing his head into the sand and causing him to bite through his lip - the facial blood is his own. During the scourging scene, for example, Caviezel was accidently hit with the whip by an extra and got a 14-inch gash on the right side of his back. While filming the "Sermon on the Mount" scene, he was actually struck by lightning.

Very nice review, Cassie and Carly, and I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. 🤗 I did too and I have to admit that I saw it a few years ago but only realized it as the movie progressed. 😅 Both, James Caviezel and Guy Pearce acted very well and the other actors are very convincing too. You were a little bit confused that the people didn't recognize him but most of them didn't know him well, he was poor, 16 years were elapsed and he was presumed dead. Only Mondego and Mercédès could have an idea but Mondego was just an egomaniac while she was realizing the truth. Besides a beard changes a lot. 😄 The only thing that bothered me a bit about this film adaptation is that the last third of the film only rudimentarily follows the original book and instead a happy ending was added while they go their separate ways in the book. But no reason to complain, let's say that was artistic freedom. 😉 PS The sound is fine, I didn't realize any difference. 😊

Chris Lüders

Great reaction as usual. It was fun to watch how excited both of you got when you were figuring out some of the plot twists. Richard Harris who played Abbe Faria was indeed Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies. Also, he was Marcus Aurelius in the Gladiator. Regarding the movie I would definitely rate it higher than my 17 year self did. They did a decent job adapting a monstrous novel into a 2 hour long movie and the cast did a great job as well. But the book is almost as big as The Lord of the Rings so as anyone would guess fitting this into a 2 hour long movie is coming with large sacrifices. It was more than 2 decades now when I read the book but I think the first half is more or less following the plot accurately. However, the second half after the escape is very different. There was much more plotting and conning involved during Dantes' revenge. I think this might have been the reason I originally disliked the movie as the book experience was too fresh and I expected a more accurate adaptation.

Gábor Árki

My favorite book as a kid, too. There were so many adaptations, but this is the only one that I really liked. And Richard Harris as Abbé Faria was perfect casting.

Alex Villarreal

One of my all-time favorite movies, glad to see it worked just as well for you and Carly! As far as adaptations go, it's pretty loose when compared with the Alexandre Dumas book, but for sheer entertainment this movie is top-notch. Because you and Carly liked this one so much: you 100% must watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Same director as this, has a very similar storytelling style of storytelling, and also stars your film-boo himself, Kevin Costner.

Chris B.

The "popcorn in bed" neon sign was a great gift because, in addition to looking great, it creates this warm, pink sidelight that's somehow pleasing to the eye, if that makes sense...

Alex Villarreal

"A MONTH?!" lol, that should have been the tagline of this movie. That was a lot of fun :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

lol "Alexandre Dumas, that sounds familiar to me". Maybe for other reasons too but that brings it back to your first reaction. In The Shawshank Redemption, when Andy finally gets the books for Brooks' memorial library, one of the inmates played by William Sadler picks up a book and says "...Alexandre Dum...Dum ass. Alexandre Dumbass??" haha. And that was a great intro Carly. Nailed it lol. Thank you, this was an awesome surprise as always.

Erik Daniel

That was so fun! Glad you both enjoyed it

Hannah Mather

So after a quick search it seems there are more than 50 film or television adaptations of The Three Musketeers dating back to 1903. The article I was reading: https://bookriot.com/three-musketeers-adaptations/

Gábor Árki

I discovered the book considerably later in life, but I can certainly see why. (And I didn't have to have the book open in public for long for someone to tell me the same thing.) The first half in particular is spellbinding.

Henry Fitzgerald

Im so excited about this, I'm putting everything on hold and watching it immediately

Hannah Mather

My favorite book as a teenager!

Krusty “Topher”

It's not that difficult to imagine why the people from his past wouldn't recognize him. Keep in mind this was well before photographs so they would have had to have a portrait of him for his face to stay in their memory after 16 years. He wasn't wealthy enough that there would have been one of him. That's why it took one of his habits (the hair twirl) for Mercedes to know for sure.

JayF

I don’t think I’ve seen this one since it came out. I didn’t see it in theaters. I think I rented it. Back when renting movies from a video store was still a thing! 😀 I honestly don’t remember much. So I guess it’ll be a little like watching it for the first time. Looking forward to watching this one (again)!

Robert da Spruce

Thank you so much for reaching to this! Even though Edmond was the protagonist, I always think of Mercedes as the real hero of the story. She had to overcome Fernand’s jealousy and betrayals, Edmond’s desire for revenge, all while protecting Albert. Fantastic reactions from both of you!

ArsTropica

I've probably commented this on every other comment, but if you liked the 2002 version the BBC did a miniseries in 1964 that's a very good adaptation

Connor P

Thank you so much for reacting to this! This is always the movie I recommend yet never really expect anyone to watch. I'll check it out tonight! Can't wait for other reactors to add this to their catalog too! I've seen this movie so many times I don't even need to have my own copy lol I already know it scene for scene!

Connor P

The Count of Monte Cristo was written in 1844. Napoleon was exiled on Elba for 10 months in 1815 - he was the emperor of France from 1804-1814 - he was defeated twice. The first time was in 1812, his second campaign only lasted 100 days where he was defeated at Waterloo by Wellington in 1815 after his escape from Elba. This movie is a remake that has been done many times (I like this version the best). Really glad you both enjoyed it - haven't watched it in a while. The son Albert was played by Henry Cavill (Enola Holmes, Superman, The Witcher, Immortals, The man from UNCLE. Guy Pierce does an excellent Mondego - a truly despicable person filled with hate and jealousy.

ENC SW DV Rush

You guys are darling. It was so fun to watch this with you both. This film has been s favorite for a long time. I'm so happy that you both loved it.

Michael Enos

Who one do you recommend?

Connor P

The sound is fine. Good enough. In terms of the movie, the beginning is before the Battle of Waterloo. As you saw, Napoleon escapes anyway and the battle happens in the next year or so in 1815. And yes, Mondego is indeed a twerp haha. I love this movie, but the book is better than the movie. I would suggest you listen to an audio book. There are many good ones, some of which have multiple actors reading the parts. I was able to find one of those back when and it helped greatly during my high school English class.

JediLounger

The French movie Playtime (1967) is set around the opening of a new nightclub. One lovely thing about it: the more things go wrong, the more everyone has a good time. (My overly complicated, perhaps-illicitly-sneaking-a-suggestion-in way of saying: Don't worry about it!)

Henry Fitzgerald

Having the movie sound on a little bit actually helped with the sync, at least for me. Didn't bother me much. Always great to have the video start off with Cassie and Carly going off tangent, usually about food or snacks.

Mr Jordan

Musketeer adaptations are a dime a dozen. Those are based on different books from Dumas. The little bit better ones I saw: The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974). But the more recent The Three Musketeers (1993) is also a decent attempt and I do enjoy The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) quite a bit.

Gábor Árki

Sound sounds good enough for me, just a little bit quieter than usual? Or maybe it's that it's a less directional microphone than your usual good one? I tend to be fussy about sound quality and I'm happy with it :) Edit: Just finished watching it. The reaction was as good as I was hoping it would be. A two-woof bad guy :D Cassie's hatred of him was great.
