Based on Historical Event Poll
Added 2022-01-17 04:13:40 +0000 UTCHey guys, so the poll to pick the next Poll is over and the winner was "Movies Based on a Historical Event Poll' Yay, this one is great, I am so excited about any of these options. Ok so I was having a hard time distinguishing exactly what this category entailed, I made the parameters a bit more than just "based on a true story" but rather based a big historical event that most people know about? For example "127 Hours" although based on a true story, I did not count it for the poll as based on a historical event.
I know that I am probably missing ones that you love, but hopefully those will go on a poll one day too!
I have already seen some great movies from this category like-Hidden Figures, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, The Kings Speech and Troy are a few. Then for the channel some of my favorite's have been in this category: Schindlers List, Gladiator, Hacksaw Ridge, Saving Private Ryan and then of course the series Chernobyl, Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
Also of note, I am planning on watching "12 Years a Slave" and "Glory" in February for Black History Month so they are not on this poll.
I will watch the winner right away and post it, and then the runner up within the next month. I want to watch all of these eventually :)
This will be a 72 hour poll and the voting will end on Wednesday at 12am MST
Thanks, I have no clue which way this one will lean and am excited to see :)
Ps-Ghostbusters and Rocky 3 will both be going up tonight, but probably in the next 2-3 hours!

2023-06-10 10:54:57 +0000 UTCThere is at least 1 mistake I can see in the list. 300 isn’t based on a historical event…. 300 is based on a graphic novel and the graphic novel was a heavily fantasised version of the historical events

2022-02-24 15:52:44 +0000 UTCFirstly, I remain of the opinion that Mel Gibson’s work (especially when he’s the creative force) are over-simplified, manipulative, cynical narratives designed for the wish-fulfillment of a specific subset of the audience. His protagonist is the John Wayne cowboy character in the white hat. The antagonist is always cartoonishly evil. Thought, gray areas and nuance not welcomed with Mel. Vito Corleone and Andy Sipowitz need not apply when it’s about last temptations ridges with hacksaws. Only my opinion, his work is putrid. But to the main point, I’m having some difficulty equating the morality of Alec Baldwins tragic, yet unintentional manslaughter to Mel Gibson’s very intentional Holocaust denialism and Nazi revisionism. He didn’t even attempt to refute it. For me, that’s an unpardonable offense. He’s on my personal list of the forever banished entertainers along with Michael Jackson, Harvey Weinstein (possibly Kirk Douglas, need more info) and some others like OJ Simpson, who don’t feel like much of a sacrifice. But that’s my opinion. I expressed it during an opinion poll. It’s obvious many people feel differently.

2022-02-20 07:41:27 +0000 UTCThe list of people in Hollywood who suck is pretty big. I mean Alec Baldwin just killed someone and his movies are still on the table it seems. Mel's had his moments, but they were a long time ago. Plus his movies are pretty well liked.

2022-02-06 02:53:50 +0000 UTCYou can cry and whine about and it and yes, while I agree he's made mistakes, doesn't mean he's movies aren't good. Personally I find nothing wrong with John Wayne movies at all, and patriotism in movies doesn't offend me one bit. There are still plenty of people on here who love to watch Mel Gibson's movies. Just because you don't want to see it, doesn't mean everybody needs to conform to your idea of whose a decent human being and whose not. I mean to be fare, Mel Gibson's "We Were Soldiers" (which is actually a Randall Wallace film) is widely considered to be one of the most realistic and THE most historically accurate war film of recent history.

2022-02-06 02:52:22 +0000 UTCI would be okay with a voluntary exclusion ofall Mel Gibson produced schlock. Not only is he personally an irredeemable human being, but his creative work is, being my kindest, mediocre. It’s rarely authentic or historically accurate. Be it Braveheart or Passion of the Christ, or Hacksaw Ridge, it’s always manipulative and designed to appeal to the basest instincts of Gibson’s devoted common denominator fan base. Nuanced and thought provoking his work is not. It’s as if John Wayne was making movies in 2022. It’s no that I’m simply opposed to patriotism, but gimme a complex anti-hero (I.e. a Clint Eastwood films like Gran Torino or Letter from Iwo Jima) anytime. The fact that Clint doesn’t make me want to vomit for watching his work is a bonus.

2022-01-25 19:02:04 +0000 UTCHi Cassie. I may be a little late to the conversation here, but today I just watched for the first time (with my Dad) a truly terrific film based on actual historical events. It's called "In the Name of the Father" and stars Daniel-Day Lewis. If you're unfamiliar with the story I'm not going to spoil anything for you, and I highly recommend that you should check it out.

2022-01-20 16:47:16 +0000 UTCAs a space nerd (who works in the space industry), it makes me happy to see Apollo 13 winning. Two of my other favorite based on real events movies are 13 Days (about the Cuban Missile Crisis) and Gettysburg. (If you want a miniseries, From the Earth to the Moon is awesome!)
