Amelie - Full Reaction

Hey guys! I wanted to get this to you 2 days ago but I accidentally deleted the outro and had to wait for Carly to come back over so we could re-record it! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Hope you guys enjoy! We are watching this on my DVD player and I believe the length of the movie is 2h2m for those who need help finding the right copy.

Also just a quick update.. I'll have Dances With Wolves (the theatrical version) up tomorrow night and Spirited Away on Sunday! Thanks as always for being here - you guys are the best!

Direct link in case the above player doesn't work.

Find your own copy to follow a long with.

Audrey Toutou also plays in a movie with Tom Hanks ..

Loving your Amélie! Can’t find a digital copy, but I remember enough to enjoy your reactions. Thank you!

Cassie you mentioned rewatching this a few times. I hope you do. In the first few years after its release I saw it like five times. It was so different from anything I’d ever seen, it was almost like I needed to understand it better. It also helps that it’s visually intoxicating and Audrey Tatou is so cute and quirky. Paris is also like another character. If you haven’t been, it’s really that charming and beautiful (though in real life it’s more crowded, has more tourists, and is dirtier… but amazing nonetheless). It’s far from perfect - I find some of the French humor not funny/sophomoric at times (I lived in France for a few years, which only reenforced that perception), the end is almost tediously drawn out, and other parts of our are a bit slow. That said it’s still one of my favorite films. You should watch it again, with for the channel, or for fun. Maybe with your husband (though I can’t imagine you’d have time for that!)

another great foreign film is Waltz with Bashir , possibly the best war movie Ive ever seen . its about recovering lost memories from the Israel Lebanese war . the ending might be to horrific for Cassie . it shows actual atrocities that happened . still if you are a fan of great films , Waltz with Bashir

I first saw Amelie in the theater nearly 20 years ago, on the advice of my then-boss. I didn't know what to expect, he basically just said it was weird and described the death by suicide-jumper moment at the beginning. But I was immediately enthralled by it. First by its fairy tale-like whimsy and sense of humor, then the incredible eye for the little details that make each personality so distinct and precious. And finally for the absurd amount of detail and art design - including computer animation - which I had never seen before in any movie that wasn't a big-budget action/adventure or prestige drama. Amelie isn't some pretentious art film, it's just a frivolous rom-com. But unlike frivolous American rom-coms, which all look the same, all shot in the same style with the same standard Hollywood 3-point lighting... here was an airy little comedy made with endless love and care and imagination all the same. As if to say the little things can still be beautiful. Which is, of course, what the story itself is all about. I'd gone to a midday showing, and was surprised to see it was still daylight as I exited the dark theater. I walked out into the sunlight with the joyous music still in my head feeling like a million bucks, and immediately went to Tower Records to buy the soundtrack. And since then I've had a new appreciation for what the movies are capable of.

A big part of the appeal for me is visual. The art direction is so original and beautiful that each frame could be a photograph.

Oh crap...when I heard her say she was watching this, I was thinking of Emelie...bit of a difference, I guess, eh?

Jacob Bender

Amélie... I love this movie and not because I am French! An unpretentious movie that had a fabulous destiny (like the title in French the fabulous destiny of amelie poulain!) little anecdote : First thought for Emily Watson, the script changed completely because of incompatibility of schedules and a French not enough mastered for the needs of the film. As a result, Jean-Pierre Jeunet agreed to consider the profile of the young Audrey Tautou. Thank you Emily Watson... :D Great reaction Cassie and Carly, a second viewing and the pronunciation of "au revoir" will be perfect ;)

Grégory Gautier

Fun fact: Some viewers may recognize Nino from The Fifth Element... he had a landscape of a hallway attached to his head ;)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

i think you described it perfectly, better than we could, it does make you want to do small acts of kindness ❤️

Cassie

i need to rewatch already, i think we were a little distracted with subtitles and missed some of the beautiful scenes and colors, i think it took us a while also to get into her “world” and we were trying to make sense of things so i want to rewatch and just be charmed

Cassie

iTunes has it for rent and purchase, so does YouTube and Google Play. in the US anyway.

Can't wait until I have a couple of hours to devote to this one. I've been waiting for Amelie since I first recommnded way back when! One of the main reasons I subscribed, LOL Such a wonderful film and one of my all-time favorites. I hope you love it.

👍

MikeLL

My personal favorite. This movie appeals to many only child and many people on the spectrum. Amelie has a rich imagination to cope with being alone and has built walls as her parents did. Her worldview helps her, but also limits her. Tho the scope of this movie is very small, every step can be huge for Amelie (and Nino, as they are cut from the same cloth)

Have you seen The Umbrellas of Cherbourg?

Rich Mcclure

Thanks for your answer 2nd Opinion

Anthony Turmel

I'm pretty certain she would hate Mulholland Drive, but I'd like to see that reaction. I love David Lynch but The Elephant Man and Straight Story are the only films of his I think Cassie would enjoy.

Hello, I'm new here and I would like to get the discord link :) Thank you

It’s on Amazon prime if you are in the US

I'm having a hard time finding the theatrical version of Dances with Wolves, the Extended version is popping up everywhere.

Isn't that what Doctor Who says?

Do not confuse the movie Akira with the director Akira Kurusawa - they belong to two totally different genres

Jens Pouplier

I don't blame you for not being head over heels in love with this movie, it certainly is quirky and unusual, although for as acclaimed as Amelie is - I personally prefer two other movies by the same director more: Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children. I remember being quite blown away by this movie when it first came out, but over time somehow the story is not as captivating, and you do focus a lot more on the cinematography and amazing score. Its a playful and unusual movie, and something everyone should watch once at least. If you're going to do another foreign movie anytime soon, please choose something by Akira Kurosawa. Or ya know... just watch the movie Akira... that'd be nice.

Amelie is French for 'not available'

nick bell

One of my favourite movies. Everytime i watch Amelie, for a little while afterwards, everything feels right with the world.

Opti_Frog

Allons-y! Let’s go! Allez! Go! I remember my high school french! (Jouez = “Play”)

Looks to me that Amelie is not available for streaming anywhere. Please if anyone can find a resource that has it available I would love to know where I should look.

Doug R

"That's the strangest movie I've ever seen." (paraphrase?) Aww, I think that's a shame. Good that it's making a new normal for you, but a shame that the jarring-ness of doing so had to happen with this film in particular. Anyhow, this is easily in my top 5 for both films and film soundtracks. Yann Tiersen ftw. So glad I had an excuse to rewatch it, again :) edit: With all that in mind, we need to get Mulholland Drive up on the channel asap. Let's broaden our horizons to the max, early, within reason... ;)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

It's also on netflix

nick bell

Enjoyed the reaction Cassie & Carly, it is indeed a strange and charming film. Dances with Wolves (theatrical) is on Prime in America, not sure about elsewhere. It is also on Netflix in America. For those who are unaware, this is a great resource. This website indexes most of the streaming services available in America and lets you search to see where something is watchable. They may have services outside America, I have no idea. Never had the need to look. https://www.justwatch.com

***SPOILERS**** for anyone in the comments who have not seen "Amelie". A couple of answers for you Cassie and Carly. I had always interpreted the video that Amelie made for the "Glass Man" was that because of his condition he has never really been able to go outside and experience the world in its weirdness and wonderfulness, and by her giving him the video he has that chance to experience through it. Secondly the animation of the paintings and the little pig lamp and others is from her imagination and how she copes with being very shy, and unable to have meaningful relationships so she internalizes things to keep herself company. Now this movie is amazing, from the cinematography, to the score, to the editing and directing. I love it mostly because I really identify with Amelie. I have always been extremely shy, and afraid relationships myself because I am so afraid of people not liking me, so I spend most of my time when I am not working or with family watching movies or reading books on science, and ancient history or film. They are my escape from reality, and I am fine with that. This film always makes me feel so happy.

Does anyone know where this can be streamed? I can't find a copy anywhere. My search results keep getting this: (Amélie is not available for streaming.) (Let us notify you when you can watch it.) Cassie, if it's not available to stream and you have to purchase a hard copy. Can you put up Dances With Wolves today?  Thanks!

Gideon James

Not streaming anywhere and only on DVD… might miss this one.

djKENTO

I always preferred it over Alien 3, that movie was so bleak and grim because of ...spoiler reasons. Although haven't seen neither in more than a decade now. I usually re-watch only the first two. I know Whedon was very unhappy with the final product. Allegedly there was much more in his script, after all it was his script that convinced Sigourney Weaver to reprise her role one more time.

Gábor Árki

You remember correctly, there is such a scene.

Gábor Árki

This is such a charming movie. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it a couple of years after its release. Ever since it's one of my go to feel good movies. It has such a uniquely beautiful look with that warm and saturated color timing, and the score is also amazing. I always liked the sound of a piano. It feels so nostalgic and melancholic, happy and sad at the same time. I'm curious to see this reaction. I'm a bit worried that this is a movie where subtitles might pose as a distraction for the viewer from the amazing visuals not to mention all the intricate details in the narration and the fast pace of some conversations. Even though I'm usually favoring the original language with subtitle I've seen this the first time - and all but one of my re-watches - with an outstanding dub.

Gábor Árki

Looking forward to this. You might be surprised to hear the last film Jeunet directed before this was Alien Resurrection, the 4th in the Alien franchise. It's not very good.

Jay

Yes finally cassie will get to dip her toes into anime. I hope she does a series I am almost hundred percent surecshe would love some of these anime series.

YESSSSS cant wait to watch this Saturday night

Mike Lipke

I am sure i have seen this movie before, many years ago. I think I remember enjoying it. Some of the visuals were quite impressive from memory. The one I seem to remember the most was a skipping stone on bridge? Am I remembering that correctly?

Brian McGovern

I think she mentioned in an Instagram post that it is going to be Patreon exclusive so it will likely never be released on YT.

Brian McGovern

I remember when this first came out and got my own dvd copy to add to my 🎥 collection to enjoy. The movie is so charming and I love the music. Looking forward to the next two - among my fav films.

Cassie, be wary about spirited away. Studio Ghibli are notoriously litigious and hit channels with copyright claims all the time.
