Serenity - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Sadly, here is the last chapter in the Firefly saga. It's definitely bitter sweet. I got my questions answered but.. it's over :(. Hopefully you enjoy this reaction as much as I've enjoyed Firefly! Thank you all so much for being here and helping support the channel, it's really so appreciated. <3

16:30 It's funny you thought that was Inara and not River. Inara isn't really known for walking around barefoot.

Brandon Pierce

From a narrative perspective I get the point of killing Wash, it was so when the other characters were in peril the audience believed that they were really at risk. Even so, I can't help but feel it was a cheap shot to kill him off. That final battle could have been just as tense if he had been under siege with the others.

ProgressiveRoxx

This was a hard reaction to watch because I knew what was coming and how much it would hurt. I definitely remember reacting the exact same way when I first watched it all those years ago. Definitely a rollercoaster of emotions, and the fact it can still make me feel that after all these years says all you need to know about how fantastic this movie is. I love these characters dearly and I still hold hope that one day we might get more Firefly episodes! 🙏

Luke Godfrey

The comic story "The Shepherd's Tale" is excellent, if perhaps sad. It does wrap up everything about 'Derrial Book'. The Operative does appear in the official comic stories as well, plus a few interesting surprises. The novels are good too, as far as I've read (only halfway through #4 and #8 is due out in May 2023).

MertzRocks

I know this is older now but there is the official comic series that goes into their life after the movie.

Sean Murphy

I enjoyed your reaction to this and Firefly. I made it a point to look from the movie back to you when I knew something big was coming. Serenity didn't hit as hard for me because I actually saw it before I ever even knew Firefly existed. I wish I'd had the opportunity to watch the show before seeing the movie but it was fun rewatching it with someone who had never seen it before. It's funny, before serenity I didn't know Nathan Fillion from anything other than a little show called Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place which also started a little known Ryan Reynolds. Now he's one of those actors where if you put him in it I will watch it. Firefly and serenity were so good. I wish they had been able to carry on making more movies. I think that was the original plan which is why we didn't see Mal and Inara get together. But just in case this was the last one they at least put it out there that you expected it to happen.

Steve Sanders

I'm there with you about this show and I always always have been. THIS, THIS is what good writing and character development look like; something seriously lacking in current entertainment. I will say.. though I've watch the show and movie several times before, never has it been more impactful as has watching it with this channel.

Doc Savage

and now i have a lovely loop where i watch with or without the reaction... i can watch C over and over and over!

Gina Houston

I loved your reaction. So heartfelt. It's amazing the way this tiny series goes from complete confusion in the first half hour to constant laughter and tears in the last two hours. And the cleverness of the story; the movie shows so much more about River and the world, it makes us want to go back and rewatch the series again now that we understand. And then we have to watch the movie again. And we just get stuck in that lovely loop forever.

Jeff Richman

Yeah, I don't really know if I would categorize this as a happy movie really. Bittersweet at best. Good, but bittersweet at best. I always kind of liked to think they were showing Book's backstory by way of the Operative. I know they did a comic or something that told the real deal (or part of it at least), but I kinda liked to think the Operative goes off and becomes like Book, making amends for his past just as Book did.

TheToweringOtakunt

Hello Cassie, your reaction to the whole show, and especially to the movie, has been very nice. 👍😁 It's a real shame the show was canceled halfway through season one and not even airing episodes 12-14, which were already done. Also that there was no other network which wanted to pick up the series. After all, all 14 episodes were available on DVD and mainly because of the massive fan base they were able to give the story a reasonably satisfactory (because the story could and should have been much longer!) ending with the movie. But the handling of such a great series, with its background and characters developed in such detail, is really an indictment of FOX. But there were problems between FOX and the creators of the series from the start because FOX only wanted action and nothing profound. Finally, a little spoiler in advance: If you should ever (hopefully) watch the series 'Battlestar Galactica', you will be able to see a small Serenity tribute in the pilot episodes (Miniseries), if you are very attentive. 😊 On YT I've found this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQMHQjaxfpE (unfortunately not that good quality)

Chris Lüders

Ah yes, this is why I'm here, lololol

Jonathon Bost

Great reaction to a terrific movie.

Paul Spacone

Mate. This reaction brought me to tears. Very cathartic rewatching these characters / friends with you again Cassie, I'm sure a lot of people agree.

James Little

My girlfriend (now wife) introduced me to the series, and consequentially the movie. We ended up seeing it in the cinemas at a special preview screening before the official release - as a result our first screening was ALL massive hardcore fans. I'd only had to wait a few weeks to see it, but Liz had waited Y E A R S. That leaf on a wind scene hit like a hammer in that session...

Raymond Morgan

Made by Disney... without Joss... yeah, I can't see that being any good.

Doug Fisher

Yeah... post 2020, made by Disney... I wouldn't hold out much hope of it being made or if it is, being any good. Besides, Firefly is all about the characters and these actors who played them... you lose all of that if you replace them.

Doug Fisher

I read an article with Weldon who said that when they made this movie they were sure/thought they'd get to continue with more. At the time Ron Glass and Alan Tydyk were unable to commit due to other obligations so they were killed off. I wish I could find the piece to provide a link but I'm sure that's what I read.

softshoes

Well, I finally got around to watching this one! Cassie, I think we all knew how you’d react to Wash’s death before we finished the series, but overall I think the Firefly/Serenity journey was worth it. I agree with most - that Joss Whedon disappointed the fans with killing off Hoban Wash, especially when Shepard Book already served that sacrificial purpose. Losing Shepard, as man looking for atonement, had a more meaningful impact than uselessly losing the comic relief. The largest mistake was not allowing Zoe or the crew to mourn (a beat, a pause, a moment) which made it seem like no one on the crew even cared. Either way, Firefly is one of my all time favorite series and Serenity was a needed, though not entirely satisfying, bookend. Glad you enjoyed it!

Ike

Just finished the reaction vid for this. :'( You're right, Cassie. It's a great movie even without watching "Firefly". When I saw this for the first time, years ago, I didn't find out that it was a continuation of the show until I looked up the cast of this awesome film I just watched. Then I went back and watched the series. This now completes my Firefly reaction collection. I have been burning them onto DVD so now I have TWO copies of the franchise...the original and the reaction. :)

Chris Reise

****To other readers - possible spoiler alert*** I watched a reunion video with Nathan, Alan, Joss and Ron (Shepherd). Alan told about an experience of him signing an autograph for a woman, he signed his name with "I'm a leaf on the wind" and she just started bawling.

Chris Reise

I love the dvd version of this, it has an intro by Joss Whedon praising us and calling us mighty, because if it weren't for us fans bugging about the return of Firefly, this film would not have been made. Joss, in his intro, says "If you don't like this film, it's YOUR fault." :)

Chris Reise

100% agree with The Newsroom!!

Cole Jennett

We surrender to the movie/tv selections. We decided to try watching Firefly again and have loved it along with Cassie. Every time I say why, my wife says, why not. So we have watched everything with Cassie except a couple. I'm sure we will get to them shortly.  I'm disappointed that our Firefly will never be again with Disney. Their reboot won't have anything except the title and the world that's been built. It was an awesome ride while it lasted.

Gideon James

Cassie, some of that was pretty hard for you. It's wonderful that you were so emotionally invested but also I felt a bit guilty, like we your viewers are somehow responsible for giving you sadness. :(

JC762

I'm always reminded of BSG. Funny how thing imprint on our memories...

Jon Johns

I felt like, in compassion to the bounty hunter in Objects in Space, this operative was more terrifying, because he wasn't crazy, or flawed, he was a self-aware monster with conviction.

Jon Johns

There are rumours (strong) that firefly will make a comeback put with different actors. Next time your hubby brings you flowers say "shiny" :) Great reaction, loved it

William

The episode of "Movies with Mikey" about Serenity is amazing... he relates a story from a theatre screening that hits home with many. Worth your time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHo78pqvgFs&feature=emb_title

Samurai Ken

Ugh, JJ Abrams. Don't get me started with that overrated hack.

Che Guevarra

It is amazing, with each of these reactions of Cassie. She starts as an unknown, and at the end, she is a bonafide superfan. Also it was so heartbreaking when during the tv episodes Cassie went: "I love Wash!" knowing what was coming...poor girl

Obie Brown

Cassie this was everything. You are one of us. A true fan. You reacted in a way that only a true Bowncoat could. I'm here for it. Thank you for bringing this to us so soon. Cheers.

KTVindicare

Cassie, I really don't want to hurt you any with spoilers... but you’re a Browncoat now. You can handle it. The show Firefly hints that everything is not so shiny for Inara from the time she lands on Serenity. If you blink those hints are easily missed. Her syringe in the episode “Serenity” as well as her moment with Simon in the episode "Out of Gas" when Simon, referring to the ship says, "I just don't want to die on it," and Inara says, " I don't want to die at all." was a quick hint that Inara is in bad health from the start of the show. Thinking that a companion would leave the comfort of her guild to travel the black seems odd if you think about it. I can’t see it as something that happens. It seems like people would travel great distances to visit a companion, not the other way around. Clearly, something was wrong to get her to upheave her life to live on the fringe of space in a tiny ship. I got the feeling that Inara knew she was dying long before we meet her. She was most likely dealt a losing hand from doctors on the core planets that told her there was nothing that could be done and they could make her comfortable while she waited for the end. I bet she felt that sitting in one place, waiting for anything was a waste of life and she wanted to touch the 'Verse along with as many lives as she could in an act of being remembered for living as loudly as she could. But the ‘Verse dealt her another blow as she fell in love with Mal and the reason of the crew. Well, Maybe not Jayne. There’s a book that picks up her story**, something I might pick up on Audible to listen to while I’m at work. Because so many characters have died in this family. I can dread that the story may not go as I hope. At least this dread is earned and the story isn’t written by JJ abrams. **Firefly: Life Signs: The Firefly Series, Book 5

Powers209

I was about to post after watching. not sure if I should.

Powers209

Oh shit this happened sooner than I expected. Awesome Cassie, you spoil us.

KTVindicare

I thought the Operative was one heck of a bad guy and helped make this movie as great as it was. He maybe doesn't rank up there like a Hans Gruber but still almost stole every scene he was in. I think the only movie Cassie has seen him in Love, Actually. He was the groom that married Keira Knightley's character.

Shawn Kildal

Cassie, I truly love watching you watch movies. Your reactions to Serenity may have even been better than LOTR (but it’s close). Since he died keeping his secrets, I thought you may want to know Shepherd Book’s backstory. He started out as a petty criminal who was recruited by the Independent’s to spy on the Alliance. He joined the Alliance and rose up through the ranks to become a senior officer (hence the response when wounded on the Alliance cruiser). When he failed on a major assignment (possibly intentionally), the Alliance kicked him out, erased his records and crashed his accounts to stave off the embarrassment of his failure. Penniless and lacking any identity, he joined a monastery, becoming a Shepherd. You will find even more details in the comics. You’re the best.

Edmund Dantes

Best time watching this since in theaters with friends. I think operative will end up like shepherd book and maybe shepherd book was once an operative but wasn’t as deadly or as high up as this guy.

Sean Stuart

@TinCan Cosmanaut I watched her do the reaction video. I think she cried more in Serenity.

Che Guevarra

watch shindlers list with her

TinCan Cosmanaut

So does anyone want to tell her what was really going on with Inara? We’re still flying, Cassie. :)

Matthew Clark

I never seen you cry so much in a reaction video.

Che Guevarra

Wash's death seems to come out of the blue for no story reason, but from a dramaturgical viewvpoint it actually is pivotal. With Wash dead no one is safe, and i have never seen more evidence for this than in your reaction, Cassie. Your most emotional reaction was not for Wash, but for everyone else when all hope seemed lost. It was beautiful.

Opti_Frog

I saw Serenity in the theater when it first came out after hearing so much good word of mouth about it and being such a big science-fiction fan. I was unaware of Firefly before I heard about the movie Serenity but still was blown away by how good the movie was, by how much I liked it. I naturally went and sought out the TV series after that it was happy to find that having seen the movie first did not spoil the series for me. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed watching your reaction to serenity. It seems so truly heartfelt and I am grateful for getting to experience the movie again through your eyes as if it were the first time.

Daniel Goldberg

This was so much fun. I always wanted to check out the series (and the movie) since I was in college, just never got around to it. Glad Cassie and the patron voters gave me a chance to finally enjoy it.

Alex Villarreal

One more thing... So, I hear talk around the verse that since Disney has bought Fox, they are considering bringing back the Firefly universe. Of course, it's 17 years later, and lots has changed. Apparrently all of the original characters are gone, and even Joss Whedon would no longer be associated with it. If you recall the episode Heart of Gold (where they defend a tinfoil brothel), Wash and Zoe talk about having a child and she convinces him that they should try, although nothing more is heard of this. Evidently, the new show would feature Zoe and Wash's daughter as captain of Serenity. Maybe Wash has a legacy after all. Of course all of this may be pure conjecture, but it sure is interesting and fun to think about. Anyway, great reaction. I knew going in that this one would put you through the wringer as sure as worlds be spinning. At least you got a great new T-Shirt, and someday you can show Firefly and Serenity to your kids and watch their reactions, Finally, any time you want, you can use Kaylee's line on your husband about what's been betwixt... :) See you around the verse, Cassie.

Alan Kobb

Cassie-- I highly recommend that you look up the R. Tam Sessions. In advance of the release of the movie, Joss Whedon released them on the internet as a form of viral marketing. They show River undergoing counciling while in the alliance "school". Someone collected all of them into an 8-minute video on YouTube, so it's a quick watch, and a bit shocking, and worth a very quick reaction video, maybe? https://youtu.be/6R9ztQDdZkk

Alan Kobb

I was really worried you might not like this due to the characters we lost. But well done for making it through Cassie, I really felt for you and I think we all just wanted to send you hugs when all the sad parts happened. Thanks again for doing all the tv show and the movie it’s been brilliant watching them all again on your watch alongs stay shiny you’re now a full member of the club.

Dean Holt

Yeah, I watched this about 10 years ago before I even knew about the Firefly series, and I loved the movie all the same. Later, Netflix or someone had the Firefly series and it filled in a lot of the crew relationships that I wasn't clear on from the movie. Thanks for taking us along this journey, Cassie! While I've seen the movie and series a few times since, I felt a lot more emotionally involved with the crew watching with you;.

Forrest Tanaka

It was touch and go there for awhile but you made it Cassie! Great reaction...

David

Has anyone told you about the River Tam Sessions? They were a series of videos leading up to the release of the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFuwllLKdbE&t=23s

Texas Anla'Shok

Oh Em Gee, Serenity Woo!!

Mannygogou

Couple more things Cass... EMP = Electromagnetic Pulse which disrupts electronics. Also did you catch the metaphor at the end? Mal, "Think she'll hold together?; Zoe, "She's tore up plenty. But she'll fly true." Zoe was talking about herself. I also like to think it was a metaphor for us since we (Browncoats) were tore up plenty after this movie. Not only for losing Book and Wash but because it was all over. However, like Zoe, we will keep flying true. :)

Doug Fisher

Hadn't heard of that, will go look. Thanks!

Rumpus Parable

Of course the movie is nowhere to be found on all the big streaming platforms that it's been punted back and forth between for years. Guess I have to pull out my Blu-ray copy for this watch along.

Greg S.

First in response to your New Year’s day post notifications in my inbox from you will never be annoying. Second we don’t watch your reactions because your musically gifted, but you have time to work on the universal drum beat. Third I knew it was gonna be a heck of a reaction in the first 10 minutes we got a serious “omg”, rub your forehead played with your toes and popped your fingers. 25 minutes and I thought you needed a sedative. I still say bless you every time you sneeze. And when you scream hyper speed hyper speed hyper speed laugh so hard every time. And I’m glad you got all your answers! You’re the best.!

Steven Ashford

Hmmm I guess I need to go watch the full reactions to this series and the movie now! Only seen the first episode.😀

Krusty “Topher”

Happy New Year Cass!! :D When you said you didn't care that Firefly reactions do not get big numbers, because you love the show... this is why you are the best reactor out there. It is too easy to get caught up in the numbers so I love the fact you have remained genuine, open, honest, and trust your heart. Do not ever change. :) You are smart and intuitive so I am sure you already realized this... but just in case... you did pick out a continuity error with Simon at the beginning in regards to hearing what they were doing to River, yet in the show he didn't know. The reason I believe is because they had to let the general audience know what had happened to her and trusted the Browncoats would forgive this misstep. Anyway... I wish you nothing but success and happiness to you, Carly, and the rest of your family in the coming year! :D

Doug Fisher

Well I know what I’m watching tonight 👍

Dean Holt

Thank you Cassie - It was an honor to fly with you in your reactions to Firefly/Serenity. You rode your emotions like a leaf on the wind - and - we all got to watch you soar. Now no one will ever take the sky from you - now that you’ve found Serenity! Looking forward to a great new year of PiB reactions!

Terry Yelmene

Every time I hear the Universal logo scene I’m reminded of (and immediately want to rewatch) Scott Pilgrim Vs the World. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out- you’d love it. Very fun, bit of romance, and it’s in one of the rarish movies made in Canada that doesn’t pretend to be in another country!

RocktSurgeon

The worst part in this movie comes at the end. It ends.

MikeLL

I had the exact same reaction when I first saw the Wash scene. They seemed to want to remind you why you loved the character before they ripped your heart out.

Yaisu

ABSOLUTELY LOVED your reaction, Cassie!! Such heartfelt sorrow for the ones we lost is completely justified. I can always rely on you to be genuine and entertaining. Stay Shiny!

David Bennett

As always, loved the reaction. I also loved watching and taking this journey with you, and seeing another browncoat being born. Something new for me this time watching it all straight through (which I have done dozens of times) is the young river in the movie vs the child we saw in Safe. I always thought it was too jarring a contrast - the River in safe seemed to be very well adjusted and happy, and not at all like the River in Serenity. But I think I finally figured out that the school Serenity River was in was not her normal school but is actually the Academy. She is older - even a teenager - and asking questions and learning and reading (books and people) from a much larger pool of people than she had at home, and not liking what she sees. I hope you keep re-watching these - you pick up so many details each time, and I know you will enjoy it. I am sure you have SO MANY other things to watch, so I fear you wont get to do it, but I know you will enjoy it if it happens. Keep flying and stay shiny. Thank you so much for the adventures.

Damon Corrigan

Thank You Cassie for another great reaction 😭 So happy that Firefly and Serenity has touched your heart so much and you enjoyed this whole journey so much. Its understandable that you didnt want to wait to watch this, after finishing the series, but with the holiday's and being under the weather, you still managed to watch it and get it posted very quickly. Thank you so much for that!! Hope you are feeling better and stay Shiny!!😊

Ed Garland

putting that song on my pump up playlist now ;)

Cassie

haha something special indeed! Yes I feel very weary about any reboot that wouldn’t include the original cast!

Cassie

Matt, this makes me tear up, you must have been in the first 10? Thank you thank you for sticking around. I love that this was a series you loved as well, it is something special isn’t it? Going to read that poem now! haha 🙈 i think i’m back parts of my brain I knew albatross was a bird ha

Cassie

ok well in fairness looking back they said “it would conclude Firefly for everyone and give me what I wanted” I think I interpreted that as it would be happy. And they were right, it was the old fire fly needed, just not my perfect happy ending

Cassie

Nathan Fillion actually would go to showings and watch the rest of the viewers from a back seat in the theater for the Wash Moment because of how hard and fast it hits fans. I'm sorry you truly thought it would be happy, but on seeing the person warn you to be sure to have tissues for happy tears I was thinking to myself "that was a very mean but very sweet thing to do..." to make sure you have plenty of tissues at hand since there was no way any of us could actually warn you without giving inadvertent spoilers. The Wash Moment and poor Zoe holding up to fight afterwards is HARD but so good. I wish he could've lived, but if they were going to do it at least they did it justice... His death is given the importance and impact and story shaping towards the rest of the film that it deserves. I love Wash. I honest had to back up the reaction after a few seconds of, "did she just say 'Mal is so hot right now'?". You weren't wrong. For me the Simon and Kaylee exchange solidified it love-relationship-wise, though anyone unfamiliar with the show would for sure only think it was about sex with how they didn't go at all into their actual relationship in the movie. For me that exchange with the show backstory was really just a shorthand between them summing it up that he was admitting to wanting to take (the entire thing between them) "all the way", since he just could never be forward regarding the physical side of things between them... he'd always get all bound up and awkward and screw it up and say something wrong. She finally just got him to confirm he wanted the full package when she asked for clarification on "sex?" and he firmly and sweetly replied. He made a sweet statement about being with her and then FINALLY didn't mess things up when she pressed the point of acknowledging their mutual physical attraction. I could feel that poor girl's relief, I swear, and it cracked me up how they did it. About damn time. LOL. I found it interesting, and making sense, about how they found doing the fight sequences for River to be both tailoring to her dance past and how fast it made the learning process. I used to dance and they both choreographed her fighting to fit her past training and dance training meant she picked up the pieces of fight choreography very fast. There are bits of the scenes that are a bit cringe for me because the movements or connection points she's making with targets wouldn't have enough strength or momentum behind them to actually cause harm or even much reaction from the person hit, but on the surface of just watching a fast couple fight sequences it looks really great. I love that they leave the cockpit decorated with Wash's dinosaurs stuck all over the outer edge of the console.

Rumpus Parable

Wow, I actually love all of that! These comics sound like my “ribbon”

Cassie

This was an emotional reaction. I guess I'm not the only one who thought of giving some sort of warning, but anything would have been somewhat of a spoiler. My favorite scene is probably seeing Serenity for the first time, entering the atmosphere. It's a great scene taking us around the entire ship and re-introducing all the characters on it. Especially with the music, I always got some chills. I think I haven't felt affected by this movie so much since the first time watching it. It's definitely a bittersweet ending. “I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar.”

Gábor Árki

at least you have one more day to sleep in? it felt like Sunday yesterday all day to me!

Cassie

i know :(

Cassie

With the show and now the movie this was a heck of a journey. Thank you for sharing this with us.

aarswft

Here we go. This is going to be emotional. ❤️

Stephen Aech

Cassie at the end of the movie it would be the end of season 2, or if I recall correctly that was the plan. As others have said the two people who died could not commit to sequels, but I have always suspected that Whedon was going to kill at least one of the cast members at this point in the show, as that is how he operates. I think the only reason he did not kill off a major Marvel hero during his time with Disney was they would not allow it. If you remain interested in continuing with the story, the comics really are good.

JediLounger

I didn't want to spoil anything, but now that you're done, if I recall correctly, it was revealed that Inara was diagnosed with a terminal illness, which is why she doesn't want to get together with Mal and why she left the companion house to join Serenity in the first place. Knowing this, it reveals a lot more depth about her character imo. Also, the comic books and novels/audio books are pretty good if you're looking for more! Thanks for watching this, it gives me a chance to rewatch it like it's my first time, which is awesome!

Garrett

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but there is a documentary on how the fans pushed to get the movie made. It's called, Done the Impossible, it's on YouTube, https://youtu.be/Evu3JSf1VEQ It's a fun watch.

Dirk Rheeder

Excellent reaction. I'm one of the people who saw the movie first. I was aware of the show and wanted to watch it, but it coincided with my less savory years and I didn't watch much tv then. It didn't ruin the series for me, as it is still a favorite I have watched many times, though I do wonder how my perception would've been different had I not already known so many things the movie reveals. Thanks for working your way through the show and movie, It has been something to look forward to and it is always interesting to see other people's takes on these things. There's a board game and also a dice game that really capture the feel of the show as well if anyone is interested in those things.

Entape

It is an excellent stand-alone movie indeed. And thanks for a great sci-fi boat ride with us. "There's no place I can be since I've found Serenity, and you can't take the sky from me."

G

After your last post, I stayed up to watch this,.... another great reaction. We couldn't spoil it by telling you about the sad parts,... everyone who followed Firefly would feel that as well. It was heart wrenching to watch how upset you were with the fear of losing everyone,... but it was nice to see how invested you were in all of them. I know I would have liked Wash and Shepard Book to have survived as well,... and you get the feeling that Inara and Mal will finally be together,... I never thought about Simon and Kaylee not being in the kind of love you describe,... I guess with all the build-up that was where it was all going,... not just passion but a lasting relationship. Edit: The events in the movie take place six months after "Objects in Space" -ep 14. Joss Whedon wrote a 3 part comic series that bridges the time gap called "Those left behind." Summer Glau (River) was actually a professional ballet dancer before she became an actress - she had an injury (broke her toe which ended her career so switched to acting, and that is why she is always so graceful and flexible in her dancing and in the fighting scenes. I have watched this multiple times, but seeing your visceral reactions to it made it so I felt it a bit more than I have in the past - one of my favorite movies with an incredible reaction - Thank you.

ENC SW DV Rush

Travel safe!

Jon Johns

Yeah, that was the theory back in the day...that Book was an ex-Operative. Apparently the comics took a different route and made him a spy or a double-agent or something. I will always prefer the theory. It's better IMO.

Caomhan84

She took it worse than I thought she would, but at least she understood why as a movie it had to be different than the show. Some Firefly fans still don't get that to this day. But yeah, overall I agree that I wish it had been more of a wrap-up....but they had to leave some stuff open for the sequels (which never happened). I know there were comics, too....but I never read those. Apparently there's going to be a Firefly "re-imagining" on Disney Plus next year or something. I doubt any of the original cast will return. Even so, I don't trust modern reboots, and I don't trust Disney to not screw it up. I won't be watching. Firefly was something special, a glimmering light in the early 00's that only a few of us knew about, and will always remember and love. It will always remind me of college and the glory days of geekdom before geekdom became "mainstream." It's always fun to relive it with someone who truly "gets it." Not everyone does.

Caomhan84

As others have pointed out, and as Joss Whedon has stated on multiple occasions, they knew killing Wash would have a big impact, but they also knew it would make the entire audience, especially the hardcore fans, completely uncertain as to who else they might kill off in the climax. So while bittersweet, it certainly raised the stakes for those of us that saw it in the theater. Great reaction as always Cassie... Thanks for taking the Firefly/Serenity journey with us. Glad you enjoyed it. Time to get your father hooked on it. :)

Brian Jones

Loved the series and movie reactions; I agree with djKENTO, whoever told you this was going to be happy wasn't being nice. I see the movie as being separate from/parallel to the series (Simon knows more about what they did to River, Simon not being a part of the crew, Jane not having learned his lesson with regards to betraying them, Mal's whole character arc being reverted at the beginning of the movie). If you watch the series again, in Season 1, Episode 1 Mal is actually religious when he's in the war and he loses his faith when the browncoats surrender at serenity valley; his whole character arc in the movie is getting faith in something back, and the series it would have been over 4 or 5 seasons. Another series that I would put on about the same level as Firefly (though a little lower) is The Newsroom, though it is 25 episodes over 3 seasons (16 hours total vs Firefly's 12.5 including the movie). It would be pretty amazing to watch all of Buffy and Angel (another Joss Whedon one) in aired order with you, but that would be more of a commitment (a little over 178 hours total). Dollhouse would be another (shortish) Joss Whedon one, but it might be a bit icky for you.

Omg, I just stayed up far too late to watch this, but I couldn't resist. I know, it's a rough ride, always makes me tear up, and I've seen it many times. My friends will still utter "I'm a leaf on the wind" and my reply is always "it's too soon". I do think that Wash's death is what makes you believe that they are about to kill every single character during the finale, which gives this movie more emotional stakes than just about any other movie I have ever seen. I agree with you that it would have been that much sweeter to see a bit more from Mal and Inara, but Josh Whedon has a problem with ever letting his characters be truly happy. Finally, because you don't mention it in your final wrap up: it's not explicit, but all the evidence points to Shepard Book being an ex-operative. Probably one who followed a similar path to the main villain, doing terrible things because he believed in the cause, until he couldn't take any more and quit. He probably became a Shepard to try and atone for his past actions. Anyway, a truly heartfelt thank you for going on this journey, this series has always been close to my heart, and it's amazing to see it again through fresh eyes.

At the end of this month I will have be a patreon for this channel for a year. While I may not have posted, I have watched every reaction this channel has put out. With all of that being said, this is, hands down my favorite reaction. I love it so much and I love that you fell in love with this series like I have. This will forever hold a special place in my heart and I am so happy I could go back through this with the channel. p.s. An albatross is a bird and the poem they reference is the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge. If anyone is reading this and hasn't read it I highly recommend it. It's a classic for a reason.

Whoever lied to Cassie should be banned. I can’t believe y’all told her this would be happy. Holy shit that’s mean.

For Cassie, spoilers for anyone who HASN'T watched it yet: They released a series of comics featuring what happened to the characters post serenity that does confirm Mal and Inara do finally get together after this, and that River takes Wash's place as the new official pilot of the Serenity, also in the film, unknown to her, Zoe is pregnant, and so wash and Zoe end up having a baby girl named Emma

Oooooh Sweet Baby Christmas! We’re finally here. I’m saving this to watch on an airplane tomorrow. Happy New Year, Cassie and fellow PIBs.

Universal acquired the rights from Fox with the hopes of making more than just one movie assuming the first one would make a modest hit. Because of that they were expecting the cast to sign a multi-movie contract, but Ron Glass (Shepherd Book) and Alan Tudyk (Wash) were not interested in that and didn't want to make that kind of a commitment. This meant there were not really any other options for Wash than to kill the character, otherwise his absence could not have been explained in the planned sequels. Of course we all know the movie barely made even in the box office and the potential sequels were put in halt indefinitely making this decision and the fate of the character even more bitter.

Happy New Year, Cassie. All the best to you and your family. Apparently the reason they had to kill Wash was due to the actor's schedule becoming so busy, he would not have been available for any sequels.

I have been looking forward to this but dreading it too. I cried my eyes out.

This is definitely the best movie I've only seen once. ...Just can't handle it again.
