Field of Dreams - Full Reaction

If you want another young Kevin Costner sports movie, try American Flyers (1985). It's about bicycle racing through the Rockies.

I'll bet you didn't know, Carly or Cassie, being Canadians and all, that the person who wrote the book, 'Shoeless Joe' by W.P. Kinsella, was Canadian, born in Edmonton. And the Terence Mann character was based legendary author of 'The Catcher in the Rye' J.D. Salinger. In the book, Ray Kinsella seeks out Salinger, Salinger threatened to sue if his name and likeness were used in any other medium, so the character was changed to a black man named Terence Mann, played by James Earl Jones.

JPDotCom23

I love this reaction and thank you both for it. I saw this in the theater when I was 22. I never thought about the mortgage or money aspect. I only thought about what I would give for a few more moments with my dad. I get what you’re saying but I would give more now.

Korny

Everyone did get what was destined, Shoeless Joe, Archie Graham, Terry Mann, but mostly Ray Consella, because his amends with hid Dad were realized. And we got what we needed from this film, a re-experiencing with two who felt the destiny as much as we do. Thank you Cassie and Carly for a great reaction!

Terry Yelmene

Hey Cassie, I just rewatched your Field of Dreams reaction and at the end you were asking about James Earl Jones’ character and if he died because he went into the cornfield with all the other players. His character was a writer and I believe his “purpose” was to write about what was out there. At one point he said something like imagine the story this will make and Kevin Costner’s character tells him the he wants a full description. I like to think that the farm was saved because all the people came at the end and James Earl Jones’ character came back and wrote about it which reinvigorated his writing career because he hadn’t written in years. I’m not sure if you remember, but there was a scene with Kevin Costner and the actress playing his wife at a school meeting because some people thought the books he had written about the sixties was smut and she got into an argument with another lady.

Tara

Rest in Peace Ray Liota/Shoeless Joe. My favorite movie that he was in..

Andrew Rose

Wow wow wow, what a film. I was convinced I'd seen this, but honestly now I don't think I had all the way through. Surely I wouldn't have forgotten so much of this. Costner is captivating. I liked him in Tin Cup among many many other films.

Daryl

I believe that is Cosner's arm in the mortuary. The Big Chill is one of my all-time favorites. Of course I live near the UM campus so that might help. I hated Jeff Goldblum for the longest time when I heard him call the UM helmets the ugliest in football, lol.

softshoes

my favorite Costner movies .. Open Range , Waterworld ,Dances With Wolves , Wyatt Earp ,the Postman , Bull Durham ,

Mike Lipke

great movie and the baseball field still exists . in fact MLB played a game this past season on this field in Iowa

Mike Lipke

Yay! Great reaction! I love when Carly joins you! You guys together are the best! I haven't seen this in forever and it definitely made me ugly cry. I am *really* glad no one was here because I was a mess :D Thank you! This was a lot of fun revisting this!

MattN

I’m so glad you got to experience this movie. It has such a great message, and I think it makes you a better person by watching. I’m so surprised you didn’t tear up at the end, I always get emotional as soon as Terrance gets invited in anticipation of the ending. In recent years this film has made me cherish more time with my own father (this is his favourite movie) and I think it’ll only get more meaningful down the line. Thanks for finally sitting down and watching. This is a special one!

Biggman83

I will. Every damn time I watch this movie.

Sean Novack

On June 29, 2005, 100 years after “Moonlight” Graham played in his only major league game, the Minnesota Twins held “Doc Graham Night”. During the game they played clips of Field of Dreams and passed out Doc Graham baseball cards to the fans. A fitting tribute to a life deserving of remembrance.

Sean Novack

This one is one of my favorite films of all time, sports or no

Sean Novack

Yep! I was going to bring this one up as a hockey fan that watched the Olympics that year as a 9 year-old boy. What they did with that film was amazing.

Sean Novack

Good one!

Sean Novack

I've been a Twins fan since 1976 when my grandfather brought me to a game at Metropolitan Stadium (which was where they played before Target Field and the Metrodome). 1991 was truly the best World Series of all time. By the end of the 9th inning of Game 7 I would have been satisfied (not HAPPY, but satisfied) with having been privileged to have watched every minute of every game. Morris got in to the Hall on the strength of that 10 inning performance. We may have won that one, but you guys were good for a long time after. We haven't even been there since. Congrats on last year! If you haven't seen "For The Love Of The Game" I highly recommend it.

Sean Novack

Such a heartwarming movie. This is almost a "chick flick for guys " Many a man has teared up at the scene where they play catch at the end. Of course, no guy would ever admit it 😁

Raj K. Dixit

Terence didn’t die. He would have came back when the players came back with a renewed passion for writing (which is the reason he was called to be involved in the whole thing) and watched the game with all those people and wrote a book about it.

Trembling Colors

The wife in this was also the tough chick McCoy from Streets of Fire

Trembling Colors

The first time I saw this movie. It never occurred to me that Terrence might be dead, Ray told him that he wanted a full description, so I always thought Terrence came back and wrote about it.

Tara

Cassie, I know you like underdog sports movies. So you must watch Rudy if you haven’t already seen it. As for Kevin Costner, I really like Robin Hood: prince of thieves co-starring Morgan Freeman and Dances with wolves… until next time…🍿

Tara

My favorite part of the reaction was after the movie was over. Cassie wondering specific questions and Carly saying Everything worked out....Who knows.....They see what they need to see. Very interesting to see even as sisters they interpret movies in different ways. Cassie needs answers and Carly is more just go with it.

Doug R

Fun facts: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were extras in the Fenway Park scene. Jimmy Stewart was the first choice to play Moonlight Graham.

G

in Iowa. "Oh but he was never in Iowa." No but his ghost was. "Ah I see what you did there."

Mannygogou

I'm glad you two got to like Kevin Costner on your own. He's done a lot of good movies - already mentioned but hey, Bull Durham, Open Range... The Postman, Waterworld, haha yes, those too. The Bodyguard I haven't seen yet, I'll see it if you will. (But I did see a video of him attending the funeral, no spoilers). Interestingly he was supposed to be in The Big Chill but he was never onscreen. Silverado I think was kind-of a rebooting of the western movie. I like 'em all.

Mannygogou

"Hey dad, want to have a catch?"

Mannygogou

Ah I just finished watching the full reaction. Very cool. It's great to see the whole thing. I used to ask was Terence dead all along, I never really did need the answer though. This time I watched as the van turned around and he was on the street in the headlights, it's possible the real Terence went back into his place and this was his ghost that went with Ray, that's why he did not need to pack a bag. It's not really important when he crossed over, especially if time overlaps. You could say there was a time Terence lived quietly in happy anonymity and there was also a time when he regained his voice and started writing again.

Mannygogou

I think at the time in Iowa, there were bumper stickers that said "Is This Heaven? ... It's IOWA!!"

3dbadboy1

" hi I'm Ray Kinsella...and I see dead people."... Carly. I'm sorry but I need Carly in all your videos from now on. Tell her to free her schedule up.

nick bell

A sports film that would be perfect for you Cassie is called The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock, you will absolutely love it

Simon Chalkley

Go watch The Natural (baseball movie) with Robert Redford and Kim Basinger and Glenn Close.

3dbadboy1

I think Amy Madigan and Holly Hunter are the same person.

Carol_White

Yellowstone. Kevin Costner

TinCan Cosmanaut

Another movie I've been meaning to watch for years. Glad it's with some company. That being said, Cassie I think you should think ahead and go buy a warehouse for your gifted blankets lol

Sahitya

Kevin Costner/Baseball you need to see For Love of the Game next.

Robert Snyder

For a really great sports movie I suggest Miracle with Kurt Russell. Other Kevin Costner movies you should watch are no Way out, the guardian, open range and hidden figures.

Michael Lynch

Hey C & C. I KNEW you were gonna love this one. Kevin Costner has played in a bunch of movies you might recognize him from...possibly "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". Cassie, if you are looking for more Kevin Costner and more sports film, you might wanna check out "Bull Durham" it stars Kevin and it IS about baseball. :) My personal favourite Costner films include "The Postman", "Waterworld" and "Man of Steel" (although he only has a small role as Clark Kent's earth father.

Chris Reise

Fun fact Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are extras in the Fenway park scene as young teenage boys.

Alex Gorell

Strikeouts are boring, besides that, they're fascist. Throw some groundballs. It's more democratic. Cracks me up every time.

Art of Free Speech

For Love Of The Game is one of my favorite sports movies!

Patrick Egan

I haven't seen anybody else mention it but For Love of the Game is my second favorite movie in this genre and it does have Kevin Costner in it. I definitely think you should check that one out. It's another sports movie but not really a sports movie. It's really more about a love story 😉. Ok, post editing.. someone did mention it!

Jerry Huffman

If you don't officially put Bull Durham on your to watch list after this, it's a crime against humanity. :) Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. Great reaction as always.

Brian Jones

Surprised They didn’t mention James Earl Jones being in the Hunt for red October.

Steven Ashford

I still remember the first day my Dad taught me to catch a baseball like it was yesterday. That was 41 years ago!

Steven Ashford

YES YES YES!

Jen Barnes

There are tons of fantastic Kevin Costner movies mentioned here, I'll throw in my favorites: Open Range, Bull Durham, The Untouchables, and Silverado. I know Dances With Wolves is already on the schedule.

Jen Barnes

Baseball was my sport too, since I couldn't excel at anything else. Baseball is kind of like that. The 'everyman' game.

Jon Johns

Yeah, for Cassie, Bull Durham also stars Tim Robbins, the star of Shawshank, in a humorous role.

Jon Johns

The field of dreams from the movie is in Dyersville Iowa where the movie takes place and has the original ball diamond still there. They also built a MLB sized diamond and had an MLB game between the Yankees and the white sox in august of this year it's going to be a yearly game now from the sound of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_of_Dreams_(Dubuque_County,_Iowa)

Logan Worrall

Please include the Movie "OPEN RANGE" with Kevin Costner in your upcoming WESTERN POLL, Great reaction here

Joe Aschenbrener

"Tin Cup"?

Matt Blanchette

It kind of amazed me neither Cassie nor Carley shed a tear during this film. Is it more emotional for guys, maybe? This movie makes me bawl every time during those last 15 minutes.

Art of Free Speech

I don't know about what you mentioned, but I do know it's been a tourist spot for years now. Also, MLB played a game there this year on Aug 12th. It was a big deal, NY Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox. It was a huge success, that MLB is doing another game there in 2022. The Chicago Cubs vs. Cincinnati Reds on August 11, 2022. It's already sold out. Tickets went on sale starting at $1,999 to $6,812 for one ticket. You can get it from a reseller though. Problem is tickets start at $4,157 up to $14,000+ for one ticket.

Che Guevarra

As I mentioned before, this is my favorite sports movie. And yeah, in a way it is about baseball, because in this movie baseball is the vehicle to visualize and realize dreams. There is just so much good stuff in this movie. The score is amazing - I am a sucker for french horns anyway. Plus two of the greatest road songs ever - Jessica by the Allman Brothers and China Grove by the Doobie Brothers. The cast is amazing - they all played their parts to the hilt. Amy's fieriness and compassion and wonder, Kevin doing his thing, James delivering lines like NO ONE EVER. Gabby just being adorable and cute and the bringer of news. Burt in one of his last roles delivering the Doctor role. Timothy being the overbearing brother. Just so, so so good. And! You two are amazing. Thank you for bringing this journey for us. I think I cried more than you two did, but I loved the reaction. Kevin Costner movies: Many people know about this movie, as well as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Dances with Wolves. But if there was a next Kevin Costner movie that I would love to see your reaction on, it would be The Untouchables which has yet another amazing cast.

Damon Corrigan

The Guardian isn’t bad, I really enjoyed Mr. Brooks, it was an interesting departure.

Andrew Hogan

I forgot Bull Durham also, a baseball movie and Kevin Costner.

Andrew Hogan

This is a love letter from every boy to his father. For any kid who played catch with his dad, we all wish we had this opportunity. Definitely one of my top movies, I only watch it on special occasions. Fun fact, they actually built a field out in Iowa on the very location this film took place. The Yankees played the White Sox and they will play games there on occasion. You can probably find some of the footage on YouTube. For The Love Of The Game and Tin Cup (bracket contender) are fun movies with Costner. Dances With Wolves, Bodyguard, Robin Hood all young Costner and you’ll be head over heels for him.

Andrew Hogan

If you are interested in more sports films the one I would recommend would be a league of their own. It’s about the women’s baseball league during the Second World War. It may not have Kevin Costner in it but it dose have Tom Hanks

Simon Chalkley

Yes for all of them and I’ll add 13 Days and JFK.

Andrew Hogan

Can’t wait to watch the whole thing. Just wanted to see the intro. Cassie you are so cute, still referred to racing as race caring. You are so much fun. Baseball is my sport. Being vertically challenged it’s the one sport I could play and played well. So glad you and Carly watched this movie. With the craziness of the next few days might be the weekend before I can watch it!

Steven Ashford

MLB built a field next to the movie field last year and they played a game there and the players when they were announced walked out of the corn.. They still use the movie field for kids games and you can go visit it just like they said in the movie.. also you should watch Bull Durham. Its another Kevin Costner baseball movie but its a comedy.. def a diff type of movie but funny.. haha https://youtu.be/0hixXndP7t4

Brian Landers

There are so many wonderful Costner movies - Dances with Wolves is most noteworthy - Both the Bull Durham and For the Love of the Game were great baseball-love stories that would be perfect for PiB reactions, but if you really really want to fall in love with Kevin Costner do this... watch the 1992 classic - The Bodyguard - which was the film debut of Whitney Houston and then watch this most revealing/endearing video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JuM2X3Da7k Your heart will then know Mr Costner

Terry Yelmene

Guys love this movie, because it give us something none of us have ever experienced, knowing our Dad when he was in his 20's at his peak and just having a catch!

David

A lot of people are pretty sure the Voice is Kevin Costner, the idea being that it was Ray's own inner voice, his instinct, telling him what to do, but they wanted the audience to work that out for themselves, so they didn't put it in the credits.

Brian Harris

Kevin Costner actually is a baseball player. He played for Cal State Fullerton in college.

3dbadboy1

Andrew and a few others have already mentioned some good Costner movies to follow up with but I will add a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet. However, be forewarned that they are not all of him young, they are not all of him being the "good guy" (BG - Bad Guy), and a few you will need some tissues (T). In no particular order... "A Perfect World" (BG & T), "Message in a Bottle" (T), "3000 Miles to Graceland" (BG), "The Guardian" (T), "Mr. Brooks" (Very BG), and "Draft Day" (Sports). He is great in all of these. I know you can't react to them all but I thought I would give you some more food for thought. :) You are Carly were amazing as always. :)

Doug Fisher

I'd put Bull Durham as a crush-satisfying Costner watch. No Way Out is great, kind of a mystery / lite action film, he's kinda hot in that one too. Coming up is Dances With Wolves which will make you love Costner, too, but he's only mildly charming in that compared to Bull Durham, where, I believe, Costner turns his charm up to 11.

Jon Johns

You should def give 'No Way Out a watch'. One of my fav Costner movies.

mattosh79

Kevin Costner became "Mr. Baseball" to audiences after two hit baseball-themed movies in a row (1987's BULL DURHAM followed by this one). He also played a ballplayer in the 1999 film FOR LOVE OF THE GAME. Besides baseball, he also starred in movies about cycling (AMERICAN FLYERS), football (DRAFT DAY), cross country (MCFARLAND, USA) and golf (TIN CUP). Shoeless Joe and the "Black Sox" were all real players. Historians still haven't decided which of them were actually guilty of taking a dive but most seem to lean towards Jackson's innocence, given his fantastic performance during the 1919 World Series. "Moonlight" Graham was also a real person, although they changed the year of his death in the movie. Graham was played Hollywood giant by Burt Lancaster in his last film role. Coincidentally for this channel, the role of Moonlight Graham was first offered to Jimmy Stewart, who was mostly retired by that point due to hearing loss, but who still would have been fantastic I think. In the beginning of the film, when Kevin Costner turns the TV off on his daughter, she's watching the Jimmy Stewart film HARVEY, where he plays a small town eccentric whose best friend is a magical creature no one else can see. Wonder how they picked THAT movie! The field used in this movie was built on a real corn farm in Iowa. It still stands today and is a major tourist attraction (well, for Dubuque, Iowa, anyway). It has its own team (the Ghost Players) and has also hosted exhibition games of major league teams. In the film's end credits, "the Voice" is listed as playing himself. The actor's true identity has never been revealed.

Patrick Flanagan

And, just in case anyone would like to... see if they *see* anything ;) ... I'll leave this here https://www.fieldofdreamsmoviesite.com/

Sarah

I've heard about a recent 'event' concerning this film, some kind of retrospective, or something? Can someone talk more about this? I only heard about it in headlines, and social media, and never latched onto the story. There have also been, I think, some shorts about the field used for the film? Like short documentaries? I like this movie, but only watched it once, and never really 'dug into' it, but now I want to learn more...

Jon Johns

This was a good one. I think Terence Mann is going to write about what’s out there in the outfield, but I don’t think he has to die to do it. For once, “Death” isn’t in the cornfield.

Ike

I do not normally watch the full length reactions unless I really love the movie. So far have watched Die Hard and this. I love this movie. The ending really gets me, how he calls after his dad. Watching the full length reaction is like watching it for the first time though Cassie and Carly's eyes. Probably the last one I watch for the year. Looking forward to next year's reactions. Merry Christmas to all. Have a safe and Happy New Year.

Brian McGovern

For the love of the Game is a great movie... also Dances with Wolves, The Bodyguard, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. all fantastic options for Kevin Costner movie list... Even if you only react to one of those, you should totally watch them all. Also Tin Cup, The Untouchables, No Way Out, Silverado, and Bull Durham are good too... so many great movies.

Andrew Rose

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

Eric Denney

Another home run reaction. One of the endings that I know and still get choked up as I remember playing catch with my dad.

Doug R

I’m so sorry.

djKENTO

And now you gotta add For Love of the Game where Costner does play a professional pitcher at the end of his career. It’s also a romantic drama. You’ll LOVE IT.

djKENTO

One of my favorite movies, but this will be a tough one, especially the last 15 minutes. I just lost my dad Nov. 24.....

JRCortez

Don't worry about the schedule being wonky. "If you react to it, they will watch."

Greg McDaniel

This is probably my favorite sports movie after the Rocky franchise. As you know Cassie I'm nuts about baseball. Saw the 1990s Braves rise to greatness, went to several games at old Fulton County Stadium and Turner Field, played intramural softball with my dad in high school, and was raised in the small town of Rome Ga, which has the single A minor league Braves team. This movie definitely hits home.

William Bryan

Man, I cant wait for some free time. Need to catch up with this and Die Hard.

David RedEagle

This is in my top 10 personal films of all time. I adore this American fairy tale. My grandma bought it for me at McDonalds which used to have $5 movies if you bought a combo meal.

djKENTO

If you watch it, they will come!
