Blade Runner 2049 - Full Reaction

Agreed, but nothing wrong with sudoku alone :)

and incendies!

Hands down one of the best movies in the past 10 years. I'm glad you got to finally watch it. Director Denis Villeneuve has made some amazing movies the past 8 years. You've seen "Prisoners", "Arrival", "Dune", and "Blade Runner 2049." You're missing one movie by Villeneuve that is a must to see, and that's "Sicario."

Che Guevarra

Excellent reaction. Hadn't had a chance to watch it until now. The Blade Runner world is such an amazing vision of the future. In the 80s it was predicting what 2019 would be like, but the new one does such an excellent job of predicting what our future will be with AI and technology in general. It presents so many interesting questions about how humans will interact with AI, and artificial humans, if that's ever a thing. It probably won't be too long before we have robots that mimic human behavior. It's a fascinating thing to think about. I'm on your side. Deckard was never a replicant. Ridley Scott threw that out as an idea in his director's cut of Blade Runner. I love that Denis Villeneuve left it ambiguous. It's so much better if Deckard fell in love with a unique replicant and ended up having a child with her. It blurs the lines between what is artificial and what is human.

Chris W

I really enjoyed your reaction as always. I love this movie. I love the whole Blade Runner universe. I’m probably one of the few old school people who saw the original in theaters and loved it, but still like this one better. Denis Vilneuve can do no wrong in my book. I really love how deeply this one delves into the theme of what it is that’s makes someone or even something “human”. I still don’t think Deckard is a replicant despite what Ridley Scott says. lol. I also think the daughter does have a compromised immune system as a result of a defect in her hybrid DNA. That’s just my theory though that I B have no West to back up. Haha. Thanks for your fun channel. Looking forward to more.

Stephen Aech

Great reaction as always !! - If you like the exploration of the concept of a person falling in love with an AI and trying to figure out what that means and what is real, I highly recommend watching the 2013 movie "Her". I think it is exactly the kind of unique love story that you would really enjoy. Also, another unique human/machine parent/child story that I think you would enjoy is the 2017 movie "Mother!".

EveryThirdNotThursday

As always, I loved watching your reaction to this. Here's a tidbit of some useFULL information. Denis Villeneuve (Director) asked three film-makers to come up with some storylines as to what might have happened between 2019 (time of the first film) and 2049 (time of this film) Here are the three "Prequel Shorts" to "Blade Runner: 2049" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ffxo_6Cg0Cw

Chris Reise

Look at you waxing so rhapsodic!! Who knew you were so profound Jon?! Great insight my friend! I agree with everything you said! Great series!

Krusty “Topher”

Finished. Great reaction as usual! I think you enjoyed this and part of what makes this a great film is there is enough substantive story to come away with questions. By the look of the comments, you're in good company :) Here are my answers to the test: 1) I don't think Deckard is a replicant, he's human and he "knows what's real." He knew Rachel was artificial even before she did. 2) It seems Wallace was able to recreate Rachel, but not Deckard for the reasons described above. 3) Officer K was artificial, just like Joi, but collectively you might say they had a soul. The sum total of personal experiences and desires that were NOT created by man. 4) Does Dr. Ana (Deckard's daugther) suffer an immune deficiency because of the nature of her unusual biology? 5) My guess is that these stories are often told in dystopian, post-apocalyptic settings to present the idea to the audience that humans are flawed and capable of atrocities to tip the scales of empathy - in this case - toward the plight of artificial life. The fact that you (and the audience) felt something about K and Joi, and Rachel and Deckard gives me hope that we won't ever take love (artificial or otherwise) for granted. Again, awesome reaction!

Ike

I find every time I rewatch this I personally flip flop my decision about the Joi storyline, and what it 'means.' On one hand, it questions the definition of 'alive' in regards to a.i. but on the other hand... It's really about love, and how people are told by society what they can and cannot love. This film series and short story is a rich vein that never gets played out. Always a nugget just there, on the left, by your foot, to be mined.

Jon Johns

Okay, it's 3:30 am. I am done studying, the kids asleep, I took a nap, and now I have a few quiet hours to watch this. I loved this movie - any movie - that questions or challenges the description of being alive and having a soul. Here we go!

Ike

I forget how beautiful this film is. Dawkins is the master of cinematographers. Glad he finally has an Oscar. Also glad Cassie has watched several of the movies he has helped craft.

Sean Stuart

Found where I got the quote from, if anyone is interested- https://youtu.be/WTKmaJa3Ci0 It isn’t my favorite discussion of 2049 and it’s pretty long overall but talks about a lot of the same points in the writing and cinematography that I love the film for, including the thought that part of what it’s saying about that main question fans have had since the first movie. (My favorite would be the one by Like Stories of Old, really beautiful discussion and comparison to the story that Joi suggests reading early in the film.)

RocktSurgeon

Great point. If there's one idea the movie wants you to take home with you, it's "if it feels real then it's real." I just didn't realize how that applied to Deckard. The question isn't, is he human or replicant? The question is, what's the difference?

Robin T

I think Ana De Armas could make sudoku sexy.

Krusty “Topher”

The take I like best about whether Deckard was a replicant or not (and I think Ridley Scott at least purposefully made it ambitious) is this- “does/should it matter?” A big theme of the blade runner movies is what does it mean to be human, and what lines are crossed by dehumanizing. If K loves Joi, and she has responses with feelings that originate at least some from memories and interactions.. is that real or not? At what point if ever would either of them, or any replicant, be sentient and deserve the same treatment of a human. And a lot of how K is treated is very much coded as racist language and bigotry the same as has lead to plenty of dehumanizing and atrocities against other groups of humans. Even the way his boss treats him.. as “one of the good ones” but still only fit to order around. So the next step of that question is whether it should matter if Dekker was a replicant. First heard the idea from a video on YouTube discussing their overall take of the movie. Not sure I -100%- agree that it doesn’t matter, but I do think it matches up with a lot of what the movie has underneath it.

RocktSurgeon

That final fight... Luv was capable, skilled, and ruthless, but lost in a contest of raw strength. Seriously, though, no knee or elbow strikes to K? This movie and that final fight in particular show you don't have to pretend men and women are the same in hand-to-hand to have a tense and engaging fight.

Michael Hawk

Yes! were you the one that messaged me about watching those before? I wish I would have but totally spaced and didn't remember until I was 1/4 into this movie and it was too late. Going to watch now!

Cassie

hahahha someone else asked me if I made it myself as well! I bought it like that but do like to think that is my essence on a sweater haha

Cassie

Haha do tell your thoughts after!

Cassie

glad to see you were legitimately absorbed in this. great flick

MetallicOpeth

I like how both Blade Runner movies are ambiguous and contemplative. They deal with some deep subjects and letting you think about them rather than being spoon-fed is pretty amazing for a big budget Hollywood movie. I'm with Cassie, Deckard is human. It makes for a more meaningful and poignant story, but everyone can draw their own conclusions. Great reaction as always. Looking forward to her Die Hard reaction.

Mr Jordan

But everything the replicants supposedly feel is also programming. What are memories if not programming? Does that make your feelings less real? If you make a program complex enough to respond and match someone else's emotions, can it not also be considered a real emotion? At some point, could you make a program complex enough to have "real feelings"? I don't think there's an answer, I think the movie wants you to ask yourself the question.

Robert Haynes

Going to @ you just to tell you that you sir, have chosen wisely. :)

Brian Jones

Oh, and it's one of the few movies where I felt the sex scene actually added to the movie, rather than just being gratuitous.

Robert Haynes

This is one of my favorite films of all time, and such a great example of what Sci-Fi can be. I believe the overall question of this movie is "What does it mean to be human?" The human characters (The Madam, Wallace) are cold and calculating, or (the cops, the old lady), bitter and angry. The replicants frequently show more human emotions, and Officer K dying for the right cause was as Freya says "The most human thing you can do". Finally, JOI is the best character. Fully synthetic, but really loves K, and sacrifices herself to save K. I believe Love would have killed K in Vegas, except she decided to torture K by killing JOI instead. Was it all programming or was it real emotion? Does it matter if the results are the same? I think this is also why it's so great that it's ambiguous if Decker is a replicant. Was their child the result of real love, or was he created entirely with the purpose to make a child with Rachel? Even if he was created, does that make what he had less real? Such a great movie. I know people complain about the pacing, but I think the slow flying scenes are there to give you time to ponder and let things sink in as you watch (well, and to look cool). I personally love Villaneueve's pacing.

Robert Haynes

Speaking of which.... If you're reading these Cassie, you should really add 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' (2011) to your list at some point if you haven't seen it. In fact... Just about any and all David Fincher films are excellent. Seven, Fight Club, The Game, Panic Room, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, Gone Girl..... All excellent films from one of the best directors of the last two decades.

Brian Jones

She was good in 'The Girl in the Spider's Web', but she's not the lead, and the movie overall was just average. Certainly didn't measure up to Fincher's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', or the original Swedish Millenium miniseries from 2009.

Brian Jones

Deckard isn't a replicant. Don't @ me.

Snapjaw

Sylvia Hoeks was a standout for me as Luv. I don't think I've seen her in any other films but she was great in essentially every scene she was in. Menacing performance. Cassie was scared of her.

Mark M

One of my favourite films this century, probably in my top 20 of all time, maybe even top 10. Think I saw it 3 times in the cinema.

Jay

Great movie! Ana de Armas... 😍, this Blade Runner is excellent, my favorite Denis Villeneuve (I have not seen Dune..). the photography of the film is superb!

Grégory Gautier

Very busy this week so annoyingly, I won't be able to tackle this reaction for a while. I hope you enjoyed it.

Jay

Was great seeing your reaction to the entire AI subplot as well Cassie. I honestly think that's one of the most intriguing things the film ponders. Would a replicant have an AI for company? For a friend or lover? We certainly saw love and admiration between the replicants of the first film, so exploring that and going one step further with the idea really makes one question the whole "what is genuine love?". And to go one step further than that, to use a human as nothing but a tool to express that love.

Brian Jones

Also, you should give Ex Machina a try, I think you would enjoy it

Dirk Rheeder

This was only my second time watching BR2049, and I really enjoyed watching it with you, Cassie. I love going to movies with you (hope I don't sound creepy). It feels like I have a friend to watch movies with.

Dirk Rheeder

"Crazy hot heroes" -- Cassie's new screenplay. Also, "You can't just replica... Oh, wait, that's what they're called, nevermind..." What were you snacking on Cassie?

Jon Johns

What's this "love event?" I did not get my invite...

Jon Johns

The unicorn in my opinion represents Rachel. The only replicant to give birth.

Mark M

joi did not love him it was all just a program, where he sees the big holo at the end it says you look like a joe, its all just part of the program

Richard Rear

Loved the reaction Cassie! Keep on Keeeping on! Looking forward to love event soon!

LightsCameraJake

I'm Team Deckard is Human myself, but I think "there's no debate to be had" is going too far. Regardless of the original intent, the ambiguity is there. And as I wrote above, it seems the writers of the new film avoided definitively answering one way or the other so everyone can have their preferred headcanon.

Robin T

I find it interesting how they've left this ambiguous. Personally I prefer to think of Deckard as human- the story of the first film just works better that way imho. But I remember one of the screenwriters saying some people were coming away from 2049 certain it proves he was human and others were just as certain it proved he was a replicant. It's cool they constructed it in a way where we can all be right.

Robin T

Never heard of it. But now I'll watch

nick bell

I LOVED the slow pacing in the theater... but I haven't watched it since out of fear that kind of atmosphere won't work on a TV. Maybe if I try it with drugs... 😜

Robin T

You're right Cassie.... Deckard isn't a replicant and was never meant to be. There's no debate to be had, just Ridley Scott doing a retcon years after the fact. Ford was never told he was, nor did he ever think he was supposed to be (something you would certainly tell your lead actor before shooting). The writers on the project were never under that impression, nor were the other actors in the original film, and Scott made zero mention of it at the time of making it. It's just an idea that Scott himself retconned and the fans like to entertain, but it was never originally intended.

Brian Jones

Another amazing reaction!!! Thanks Cassie for sharing!!

Andrew Rose

everyone has their interpretation of replicants. robots, androids, automatons, puppets, synthetics, skinjobs etc. personally I see them as manufactured humans. in all physical aspects human, but slaves in concept. what i got most out of this story is how K/Joe tries to find meaning and identity as both a slave to society and a slave of the narrative. finding solace with JOI and in tactile sensations like snow and bees on his hand. the discrimination of replicants does also resonate with me being a minority. growing up being yelled at by strangers on the street, only a few can experience or relate to. I greatly appreciate how it is portrayed by Villeneuve, because it feels like that.

Wu Sha Ling

My take, not having read any extra background stuff, is that Deckard is a Nexus-7 replicant same as Rachael, Tyrell made them specifically so that they could reproduce with each other, not that they can reproduce with random humans. A human and a replicant having a child seems much less plausible than two replicants having a child - you kind of need to have the same species for procreation. Also, replicants age just like humans do. A fun reaction, you got led down the path the scriptwriter wanted you to go down :D

There were 3 prequel short films leading up to ‘2049, produced by the studio and are canon. They were released around the same time as ‘2049 and each have an intro from Denis Villeneuve. They are 2 live-action shorts and 1 animated short, running roughly 5 to 15 minutes long. You can find them on Youtube. "Blade Runner 2022: Black Out" "Blade Runner 2036: Nexus Dawn" "Blade Runner 2048: Nowhere To Run"

Not sure if this is a appropriate place to make requests but may I suggest looking at the movie Talvisota? It's a criminally underrated Finnish movie about the Winter War of 1939. It is plain and simply the best WWII Era movie I have ever seen and it pains me that so few people outside of Finland know about it.

coreymcrann

The only other Phillip K Dick based movies I've seen are Screamers, Paycheck, Next and The Adjustment Bureau. None I would put up with the ones you listed. I liked the ideas presented in some of the movies, but the execution was lacking IMHO.

Mr Jordan

I want to believe that Cassie, after watching Die Hard and seeing the sweat shirt with "NOW I HAVE A MACHINE GUN HO-HO-HO" created her version of it, and that's what she's wearing. :)

Allen Bond

TY for the heads up.

David RedEagle

Yes, such an amazing film. Saw this as a film festival way back in the day and it blew my mind.

David RedEagle

Oh this is gonna be a good night. Haven't watched the Predator yet, so that and 2049 and a few bottles of wine. Im gonna have a good start to a new week.

David RedEagle

I just finally got a smart home device (a gift), I still don't trust it but I also say "thanks!" when it does what I ask, I want the robots to remember I was one of the polite ones. However, my morning alarm, my mortal enemy, now has a voice and "learns" me. Nope, not liking that lol This, however, is a fantastic and gorgeous movie about Artificial Intelligence. Gets deeper the more you think about it. Philip K Dick wrote some of the best sci-fi stories, so many became movies: Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, Minority Report, I think I'm missing some...

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Hey everyone, Cassie watches the international version of the film here, the only difference of which is what order the opening studio titles come in. If you’re watching the American cut it starts with WB, international it starts with Sony. BUT they both sync up when the word REPLICANTS is on screen for the first time. Maybe shoot for there if you’re having any issues. <3

djKENTO

Oh yes blade runner 2049 a movie so slow and loves flying sequences even Stanley Kubrick will tell you to pick up the pace. But yet it was a beautifully made film and honestly Harrison Ford would have break that glass and tell her "no there's nothing wrong with you" not only the character would do that but he himself would do that because that's how awesome he is!!!

MatthewBrown74m

2049 is a flawed masterpiece for me. If you want to do another sci-fi film, and since you're really into thrillers, I'd recommend this British film called Sunshine from 2007. Was directed by Danny Boyle right before he did slumdog millionaire. It's got a great cast and is surprisingly well made considering it's budget, with a little bit of everything from the sci-fi genre thrown in. Really underrappreciated in my book and I find myself going back to it a lot

Sahitya

Favorite film of all time
