Phantom Thread - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Here's the 2nd movie from our little "event" we had a few weeks ago! This was a very different movie than I expected, especially at the end. It was such a devious love story! The acting was amazing, Daniel Day Lewis is so good. Thanks for the pick Joel!

A Room With A View in early Daniel Day Lewis film in which he plays a supporting role and as always a very different character from any other character he’s played it is one of the merchant ivory period films that were so very popular in the 1980s

Thomas Thompson

This is why a wait through so many mediocre movies for reactions like this more Daniel Day Lewis please

Thomas Thompson

Daniel Day Lewis won Best Actor Oscar for for his role as Lincoln in the movie Lincoln (2012) - one of the best movies of the early 2010s. Daniel Day Lewis is stunning in that movie. He completely transformed himself into Lincoln the man. Lincoln (2102) movie received 12 Oscar nominations.

Someone must have mentioned it over the past two years, but Welsh rabbit is actually a cheese-and-toast dish.

Ben Livingstone

WoW! I had not seen this one since I saw it in the theater back in 2018. Not one of my favorites from Paul Thomas Anderson, but the action was good. Daniel Day Lewis keeps proving once again why he is one of our finest and phenomenal actors. I HIGHLY recommend Cassie checks out There Will Be Blood at some point. DDL won the Oscar for Best Actor for that role. Some other PTA films Cassie should check out, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, The Master. You won’t regret watching those.

WoooooWWWW! What a slow burn! Omg this like.. I have no words. That reveal at the end into the final monologue with that beautiful score. Ugghh... I'm even breathing funny watching the credits. Yes thank you Joel for the pick

Doc Savage

This was a very intriguing film. I wish I had a woman like D. D. Lewis's sister to run my household! ;-)

"There Will Be Blood"

The family doctor is played by Brian Gleeson, son of Brendan, who played Hamish in Braveheart. Gosh, they have the same eyes.

One of my "guilty pleasure" movies the 2002 adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo. It gets a lot of flack for deviating from the novel but I thought it was a very well made, entertaining film. I didn't see it on Cassie's Letterboxd account but I think it's one that she would enjoy.

ArsTropica

Darn. Well I hope she liked it.

Mr. Toad

She has already seen Punch Drunk Love it is on her Letterbox'd page. I agree though it is good.

Damien beatty

Cassie, if you liked Paul Thomas Anderson’s style, I second the other recommendations for Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia. You might want to stay away from Boogie Nights though.

Mr. Toad

Fun fact about this one. It didn't have a cinematographer. It was just Paul Thomas Anderson and his crew doing it all. Here's a video about how they got the look of the film. https://youtu.be/8dmxrBwbseI

Chris W

I agree with you, he needs it! unconventional, yes 😃

Grégory Gautier

Not only does he accept it, I think he knows he NEEDS it. He needs the reminder of his mortality when his ego gets out of control and he becomes a god in his own mind, and he trusts her to administer it when that happens. Love is an act, it’s not a feeling or a word, and sometimes those actions seem extreme to those of us on the outside. It really is a beautiful, if very unconventional, love story.

Brian Harris

Glad you liked this! Out of all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, this is my favorite. I figured his other more popular films were more likely to win in a poll so that's why I picked this one. Such a crazy and beautiful love story told with some incredible filmmaking. Every aspect from the acting, the writing, and the soundtrack is just perfection!

Joel

A toxic relationship ? most certainly... They are trying to find a balance! She poisons him just enough to weaken him. He becomes dependent, it is a proof of love, she finds importance and utility. He accepts it to keep her. Love in all its forms. For the child, great to have parents like that ^^ Good reaction Cassie

Grégory Gautier

I second this assessment, Mr. Cheese. I also 2nd the Punch Drunk Love recommendation. I am a massive PTA groupie, so I love everything he does. Hard Eight, Magnolia, and There Will be Blood being my favorites.

Jon Johns

Wow. I enjoyed that a lot more than I thought I was going to! One of the more interesting films about mental illness that I've seen in a while... another one of this guy's films, Punch Drunk Love, was also a very interesting depiction of mental illness, I thought. Anyhow, good pick, Joel! :)

GANGS OF NEW YORK! LET’S GO!

djKENTO

Maybe another Daniel Day Lewis film?

matthew

When I first saw this movie, I thought of comedian Whitney Cummings's famous line: "My definition of love is: Being willing to die for someone, that you yourself want to kill.” I never saw a movie that portrayed those feelings in quite that way. In short, find you someone who can pick out those special mushrooms for you.

Alex Villarreal

Any idea of when you'll continue the Star Wars saga?

Mike Vasconcelos

Thanks. Had no idea what Letterboxd was but figured it out.

Grinznmore

Letterboxd- her account is Pib1

Catherine LW

Where do you find the list of movies already seen?

Grinznmore

"This is a mystery." This might be my favorite reaction of yours, because you're right, it really is a mystery. No one can possibly actually understand it except Alma and Reynolds, and maybe they don't even totally get it, they just know that it's real. And by the way, this is what this particular director, Paul Thomas Anderson, does so well. He tells stories about the inexpressible, the inarticulate, and the mysteries of being human. I usually don't shill for specific directors or movies here because I know you'll find what you're supposed to find, but he really is a special and beautiful artist, and I hope you'll find your way back to his work soon.

Brian Harris

That's PT Anderson in a nutshell.

Robin T

As an autistic person I have to say this entire reaction is a wild ride. I related to Reynolds so much. He’s clearly on the spectrum, highly sensitive, and has a routine that is essentially a defense mechanism.

djKENTO

Cassie, are you planning on doing the draw thing again at some point?

Shehab Dawoud

The reason you think everything feels old is because everything in the UK is old. There are buildings and homes older than America. The film takes place in the 1950s after the war.

djKENTO

saw this movie thinking it was gonna be pretentious, pleasantly surprised at how accesible, inteligent and funny it actually was. Im sure youll eventually get to There Will Be Blood. If you had to name one movie that will be regarded as a modern classic "classic" it would be that.
