Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Full Reaction

Hey guys! This was so great, so festive, perfect timing! I'm officially in the holiday mood! Thank you for all the suggestions to watch it when I did. These two had such great chemistry. How can a movie that can give me so much anxiety also warm my heart so much?? Hope you're all having a great week, I'll be back with Phantom Thread tomorrow!

Planes, Trains & Automobiles - Full Reaction

Happy Thanksgiving 2024 to the puritans John Candy was a uniquely sympathetic screen actor

Witchfinder General

So, my first full movie watching with Cassie. Great show that I actually saw in the theaters when it was first released in 1987. Yeah, vibrating beds or magic fingers as they were called were found in many hotels, mainly for drivers on long road trips with sore backs. I'm also Canadian so how about showing The Great Outdoors from 1988 with another great comedian from the Great White North ... Dan Aykroyd? It also stars John Candy. Not as good as Planes Trains et al but still lots of fun.

Hi, Buck melanoma, Moley Russell's wart.

Mr Jordan

ahhhhhhh Cassie.....your genuine, sweet natured reactions are SO entertaining and enjoyable! DON'T ever stop being YOU! If you haven't watched Uncle Buck, I highly recommend it....some of John Candy's work! I also would recommend The Three Amigos AND Spies Like Us.....funny movies to balance out all of the skeery ones you watched for the MONTH of halloween..... I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and loved ones!

David Bennett

Cassie: "I loved this movie so much... *Head thunk*"... Lol... Best part of the reaction... Bet that left a mark...

dayriser

So glad I didn't have to cry alone on this one.

"Dutch"

Zachary

I'll prob be coming back to this reaction I enjoyed it so much. Laughed, shed some tears 😥. Great for the holidays. Seen the movie so many times but always enjoy a fresh perspective. First Time Reaction Vids, I'm hooked...😁🦃

Doubting Thomas

Oh wow, I forgot about Dutch! Good call.

Ike

This movie truly is the perfect movie. Just glorious.

Mr. Killeverything

I first saw this movie shortly after it came out, and then several times over the years after that. Laughed my head off every time, and then the ending has always moved me to tears. Tonight was no exception. There was one scene early on in the movie that was not included here. When they were on the airline flight, a woman with long hair tossed her hair back from the seat in front of Neil, and her hair landed in his food as he was eating dinner. I've seen this scene a couple of times in the slightly longer version of the movie. Cassie, I absolutely loved your reaction.

Eric

Would also recommend Scent of a Woman for a Thanksgiving movie along with just being a great film.

Ricardo Alanis

I would try to argue with you about Del being a bad person and a “grifter,” but you have made me question the film a little bit. I’m almost certain we are supposed to think that Del is a fundamentally kind but inept and impolite person, while Neil is superficially polished, but privileged and selfish underneath. But I have to admit I have never been sure about several specific points where there are “misunderstandings” between Del and Neil … like the credit card thing. I have always assumed we’re supposed to think they are mistakes, maybe made more likely by Del being a bit of a buffoon, but not because of any deliberate dishonesty on his part. But maybe that’s wrong. Maybe Del is more of a con man than most viewers think.. It’s interesting to think about. One thing does occur to me though. I think sometimes very needy people act certain ways out of habit and desperation that though not intentionally conniving or aggravating, can appear that way to people who are more stable and secure. And Del is certainly needy in any number of ways. Maybe that makes him seem like more of a villain than he really is … and even sometimes behave that way without him really meaning to. Either way, this film is kind of an amazing study of the prototypical “annoying person.”

Andrew Pulrang

So first time watching this movie. I never once saw Del as a good person. Just a grifter. Every horrible thing he did was looked past since his wife died 8 years ago? I just read the movie originally was over 3 hours long. That would explain a lot. I'm sure they must of cut a lot of scenes that showed Del as a good person.

Gideon James

I always enjoyed this movie but what a pleasure watching it with Cassie😊

Mark M

Yeah Cassie would really enjoy Cool Runnings. Always gets me in a better mood.

Obsolyeet

Missed the post credits scene lol

Mike Adams

This was the first time for me watching this as well today. Thank you for the "date" Cassie. :)

Chris Reise

Interestingly enough, being born in NYC, I was actually introduced to this movie by friends and family in Calgary and I watch it every year now. Someone else mentioned watching Cool Runnings, which you’d love and it has scenes in Banff from the ‘88 Olympics. I’d also like to suggest a little movie that is somewhat unknown called the Cutting Edge. It’s about a hockey player and a figure skater and it’s a love story.

Andrew Hogan

I love this movie, more every year I swear lol, I loved it when I was a kid, but now I actually relate to these characters 😆

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

“…in the cheap sleazy motels on the bad side of town…” “I’ve never personally seen one in a hotel” Mmmmhmmm….oh come on Brooke!!! No judgement here!!!😏😉😀

Krusty “Topher”

It wasn't just popcorn, it looked like sticky cracker jack. "That's how you get ants!"

Jon Johns

The question is, Do you eat popcorn in bed like John Candy? :)

William

Ah! nice, after my shitty day! :( I'll be able to smile! I love the scenes with the car! and the couple of "rednecks" (I won't try to arm-wrestle the lady! ^^) A great movie with a nice ending!

Grégory Gautier

Been looking forward to this one but will have to wait until Sunday to check it out. I honesty don't think anyone is better at acting irritated/annoyed than Steve Martin, he's great. And John Candy is always so likeable, whatever role he is in. They couldn't have cast this better. Every time I watch that scene in the motel, I want to jump into the TV, give Del a big hug and tell him "I like you too".

Jay

it they use to be a very real thing. And you had to pay ahead at the front desk to unlock the phone to make calls. It was so expensive to make any calls that weren’t local back before cell phones. Glad that is gone now. Long distance calls were forbidden in my house growing up cause they were to expensive. Oh how times have changed. Great reaction glad you enjoyed it. I knew you would lol

brooke atkins

This is such a classic. John candy was a big part of my childhood in the 80’s. Both him and John Hughes were gone way to soon. And Cassie back in the day in the cheap sleazy motels on the bad side of town you could put a quarter in the bed in it would vibrate for 5 minutes. I’ve never personally seen one in a hotel

brooke atkins

The reason it's so heartwarming, despite all of the anxiety of travel, is because it shows the resiliency of the human spirit, and shows that even when everything went wrong that could possibly go wrong, love for our fellow man still wins the day.

Art of Free Speech

Been so long since I’ve watched this movie! What a loss to comedy John Candy was. If Cassie hasn’t seen Trading Places I hope she gets a chance over the holidays. Still has one of my favourite lines in a movie with many, “Don’t be no jive turkey so close to Thanksgiving.”

Wes Stewart

If you like John Hughes movies (I mean, who doesn't?!), then check out "Dutch" for another Thanksgiving movie. It's funny and heartwarming, just a feel-good movie that I'm sure you'll love (from the early '90s). I try to watch it every year, along with this one and of course, the Snoopy Thanksgiving special ;)

Kelly Marie

such a great movie

MetallicOpeth

Yes Cassie, vibrating beds for a quarter were a big thing in motels back in the day.

Doug R

P.S. I forgot about Scrooged. A funny Christmas movie with Bill Murray

Katie Jackson

Hi Cassie, so I think I remember you saying you where watching It's A Wonderful Life for the holiday reactions. A few more must see holiday films that I requested on discord are National Lampoons Christmas Vacaction(My favorite), A Chritsmas Story, The Santa Clause, Miracle On 34th Street, Rise of the Guardians and White Christmas. If you're feeling like a great alternative Christmas movie Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are great. Also you could do a reaction to some holiday specials. Charlie Brown, Rudolph, Frosty and Santa Clause is coming to town come to mind. If you haven't seen them they're great and beloved by generations

Katie Jackson

I will never stop saying that John Candy deserved an academy award nomination for best supporting actor for his role in this film.

Jon Johns

The reason why, which many younglings can't understand these days, is the cost of phone calls. Making a call, especially 'long-distance' phone calls were very expensive. Even early cell phone calls were charged 'by the minute' something that would be unheard of nowadays, although I have not had a landline for almost 20 years, so I don't know anymore...

Jon Johns

They should ask, "Do you like John Candy?" at the border. Anyone that says no is obviously in al qaeda. ;)

JayF

How can you not love the combo of Steve Martin and John Candy?? Great choice, Cassie! With the Holiday Season now upon us, I'd also like to recommend Christmas Vacation (an absolute MUST SEE), The Family Stone (a romantic comedy and chick flick all in one) and perhaps the most famous of the classics -- White Christmas!!

Bill Poulter

I saw this in the theater when I was in highschool. We loved it, and I think everyone that's seen this movie loves it. I haven't seen it in many years, so I was one of the ones recommending this movie. I knew 100% that Cassie would really love it. Just a great movie. and now for the obligatory Dances With Wolves recommendation.. it's another movie Cassie will love for sure.

Johnny

One of my favorite movies! John Hughes was the BEST! And back in the day, you had to pay to have the phone unlocked to make phone calls in the more seedier motels! :)

Philip Alan

John Hughes was a great writer but I think he's underrated as a filmmaker.

G

Fun fact. Elton John wrote a theme song for Planes, Trains, and Automobiles but was never recorded.

G

Cassie, it’s always touchy recommending a movie that you build such high expectations. I’m so thankful it resonated with you as we approach the holiday season. Side note. John mentions about going to Jamaica. He went onto do Cool Runnings, putting the Jamaica bobsled team on the map. It was one of is final films. Now if your heart still has some room left, Scent of a Woman takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday. More dramatic but heart warming with an extraordinary performance by Al Pacino. Thank you for a great review.

Grinznmore

This is a classic but I grew up with Uncle Buck always playing in the background. "Go downtown and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face 😈"

Sahitya

cant wait to watch it on friday night

Mike Lipke

One of out favs. We watch it every year

Johnny Salinas

OMG I'm not a comedian fan and it's hard to make me laugh but this movie Planes trains & automobiles has the best lead roles as a team. It is one of my favorite comedies of all time that made me laugh hard I really enjoyed it I'm looking forward to it.

Shawn Raven

RIP the incredibly warm and funny Canadian icon, John Candy. He left us much too soon. The final shot of him smiling gets me every time.

Andrew

I loved this movie. There is a video on You Tube (https://youtu.be/fEtOEoyqj6k) that talks about how the original version was around 3 hours long. It is quite interesting to watch to see what was left out (probably for the better).

Brian McGovern

Yes! Thanks Cassie! Been looking forward to this. There's no other movie quite like this that I can think of.
