Ford v Ferrari - Full Reaction

I never expected a movie about race cars to bring that out of me. I don't know if I was extra emotional or what but I could not get it together. Sorry, need to get those tissues on hand. I actually loved this movie, I know it beat out some big ones in the bracket, but I loved it. I loved the way they told the story, it felt fun and I felt like I really knew the characters because they were developed and played so well by Matt Damon and Christian Bale.  Its rare I cry happy tears and sad tears in the same movie but this one did it!

She is the lead character "Claire" in the Outlander TV series (2014-present). For another movie in which Christian Bale completely transforms himself and doesn't seem like the same person, see "The Fighter" (2010), which also stars Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams. Lee Iacocca (1924-2019) (one of my favorite characters in the movie portrayed in an excellent performance by Jon Bernthal) became famous in the auto industry and a public figure. At Ford, he was known for development of the Mustang and other vehicles. He became president of Ford, and then president of Chrysler. At Chrysler, he secured a US government $ bailout that saved the company. At one point, Iacocca was the country’s highest-paid executive. Further, he published an autobiography that stayed on the NYT bestseller list for 88 weeks. He was ranked the nation’s third-most admired person in a 1985 Gallup Poll, just behind President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. He considered running for President. He died in 2019 at age 94.

Caitríona Balfe is an awesome citizen of the world, and is stunning in the Outlander series.

I Heard you talking about this movie in a lot of newer reactions. I finally decided to watch it for the first time myself, With your reaction playing in a different window. I now love this movie, It's a beautiful story of how Carrol Shelby helped Ford build the GT40. That's where the Shelby Mustang comes from now. I was very emotional when Ken was killed, It made me so sad. I googled Ken Miles and wikipedia said that once he crashed, the car broke into pieces, and Mr. Miles was ejected from the vehicle, killing him instantly. It's tragic. I loved seeing the relationship between Mr. Shelby and Mr. Miles. I truly hope that his wife and Peter were okay and dealt with it. I like to believe that Mr. Shelby took care of the family, but I don't know for sure.

Hey Cassie, This was never a movie that I planned on watching, but I’m taking your cue and broadening my movies. I saw a recent reaction of Field Of Dreams with you and Carly and one of you said you cried like a baby when you saw this movie, so I had a feeling something bad was gonna happen, but it was still so good. Did you figure out who played Ken’s wife? She is Clare from Outlander. Cassie, please don’t apologize for how you feel when you watch/ react to a movie. I joined Patreon because your reactions are so genuine and I know other Patrons feel the same after reading other comments. Don’t ever change. Until next time… 🍿

Tara

I'll have to check this out!

Ann Peterson

I'm a emotional wreck because of Cassie

Cassie: If you would like to read a really great book about the relationship between Carroll Shelby and Ken Mills, check out Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans by A.J. Baime

Only catching up with this one now, hadn't seen it before but it was great. Tragedy always feels inevitable in this type of film but it made it no less hard hitting here, I was welling up myself. Just to reiterate what others have said, don't be sorry for wearing your heart on your sleeve. I can't say this for sure, but I'm pretty certain one of the main reasons behind your channel's popularity is how emotionally invested you get in every film. It's great and it's exactly what the filmmakers want from the audience, so don't ever change:)

One of my favorite movies of any genre over the last several years. I think sports movies are so memorable because so many elements of our lives are wrapped up in them — achievement, loss, sacrifice, chasing goals, emotional highs and lows, things we can easily relate to.. This was a great example of that. Don’t worry, Cassie, I couldn’t keep a dry eye when Ken Miles died either, never can when I watch this film. So surprised (and delighted) when it rose to the top of the poll. Many viewers of your channel, Cassie, are probably too young to appreciate the importance of Lee Iacocca. I was surprised myself to see him here, I knew he was behind the Ford Mustang but didn’t know he was involved with the racing operation. He became a major cultural figure in America in the late 70s by saving the Chrysler Corporation as its CEO and serving as the memorable face of their TV ads.

I've been wanting to watch this film for a while. Really glad I saved it for a watch along, as I really enjoyed you appreciating Bale's portrayal of Ken from the very first few minutes. I had very similar feelings. I knew absolutely nothing about the story but it became quite clear about half way through that we were perhaps heading for a tragic ending. So I prepared myself but I was hoping I was going to be wrong. I felt a little numb and unaffected at first, then as the thoughts of Christian's performance as Ken started to resonate. The emotional impact caught up and toppled those intentional defences. I began to feel the full weight. Ken was a special kind of person, someone who lived to test the boundaries. It's extremely sad that sometimes a pursuit like that can end in this kind of tragedy. This is a masterpiece of a film and I can now see why it beat out so many others.

Aw, I finally got to see Cassie's reaction. I cried this time, I don't remember if I did in the theater but I'm pretty sure I was choked up. In the end Shelby couldn't say much so it was the son who said, "He was your friend." (I commented on youtube as well, I wrote about white knuckles = ) hehe.)

Man i have been pushing this movie back for so long and i dont even know why, it was a phenomenal movie. Reminds me of other racing-movies such as Driven and Rush. The 50s, 60s and 70s where full of these heroic moments of ingenuity but at the same time politics played a huge role, not to mention for my fellow swede Ronnie Peterson aka The Superswede. Who sadly passed away after a crash at Monza, Italy in -78. One of many drivers who passed during this era. It's actually crazy if you look it up, fatal crashes occured almost every season, yet they still continued to race. Anyways i really enjoyed this movie and i have to confess i cried my eyes out as well, there is no shame in it. Thanks for another great reaction and company Cassie!

Movieswede

Don't ever apologize for your emotions Cassie. Just remember that man died doing what he loved. That's gotta count for something.

hello Cassie, well , I like cars and driving , not an expert but i do really like them, at some point I wanted to test myself in a track , maybe someday, and I knew about the Ford VS Ferrari thing befor the movie , it was watching the Grand tour series in amazon , really really got my attention and I wanted to see the movie but for work reasons couldn´t and then the pandemic arrived...so it was a pretty good opportunity to watch it along with you....very inspiring, fun, and....sad....unfortunately real life can't be changed...so, do not worry, I cried with you at the end , I didn´t remember the end of ken....but it was worst with his son there, sometimes I know movies change details to make it more dramatic....in this case i looked it up and...yeah he saw the whole thing...I ama parent myself so...yeah, that really got me too...nowadays is kind of difficult that kind of accidents, lots of tests and lots of safety measures have been added in response of those accidents that took us such a good drivers like ken , so , trying to answering your question...is a man or machine that make a good team? is a rare combination of good engineers, technology, mechanics, a ggod leader and a good driver, if those ingredients are in good balance....you have a winner season , is kind of exciting...but in those old days it was harder, no computers and sensors in real time....much more driver and machine....have a great weekend Cassie!!!

salim alvarez

Hey Cassie, here is something different. There are some conspiracy theorists that reckon Ken is alive and that they found him.. Lol Below is a link to one media report about it. (good for a laugh) https://www.caranddriver.com/features/columns/a15136121/ken-miles-alive-and-well-in-wisconsin/ Enjoy 😁

Marina

Dumbest comment I've read anywhere is a long while.

Paul Klenk

I watched the movie last month and not one tear. After watching it with you I was a blubbering mess.

Gideon James

This is a really good movie but... It's the second movie I've seen that shows how corrupt the heads at Ford are. The other movie is Flash of Genius , and it's about how Ford stole the patent of the intermittent windscreen wipers from the inventor. If I owned a Ford car, I would sell it in protest.

Marina

this was a nice reaction, my feeling also at the end was "...NO". good stuff cass

MetallicOpeth

If you liked this, dearest Cassie, you’ll really like ‘Rush.’ Please let me know you got the word about Nov 2nd Amazon gift in PO Box. Check Patreon messages from me, please

“Available in any color as long as it’s black.” Ford paid all his workers, from memory, $5/week, including African Americans. The wage was quite good and Ford not only hired but had African Americans working the same lines as any other worker. This caused some tension during some racially tense periods in the US. Oddly enough, Ford espoused some rather racist views but this may be chalked up to being a man of his time. Similar to Lincoln, he seemed to think African Americans weren’t equal in intelligence and ability but his production methods, centering on small, simple tasks performed at each step regardless of the race of the person doing that particular task may have meant he felt anyone could perform and everyone was equally deserving. His production methods meant high levels of consistency, predictable rates but also meant menial job requirements. You turned the same wrench on the same bolt all day long as it rolled past your work station. Ford hired black workers but no black executives.

Lamar Smith

Wow, this really got to you. No wonder though, during first watch and not knowing anything about the background or Ken Miles I never really expected this ending either. First punch not winning the race on a technicality, then the real hard one the accident. Regarding your question on Ford, they were not the first car manufacturing company, not even in the USA. Not even Ford's first car company, that one he left became Cadillac. What made Ford so successful was the introduction of large scale manufacturing using a moving assembly line that was fine tuned by a lot of trial and error. They created the first real mass-produced, reliable, easy to maintain and inexpensive car the middle-class could afford, the Model T.

"Do they have snacks??" - Cassie in reference to driving for 24 hours. I have been following this patreon since the beginning and this my favorite quote in a reaction yet :D

MattN

"I accept that I'm already dead..." Heh. I thought the same thing in war. Marcus Arelius—emperor, soldier, philosopher—wrote that one should meditate on their own death every day.

Michael Hawk

I had never watched before but I really enjoyed it. I’m surprised you didn’t recognize Josh Lucas from some Rom Coms and Jon Bernthal from Fury.

Mark M

So fun fact, Dan Gurney one of the other racers is played by his son Alex Gurney for the film.

David RedEagle

Ok Cassie. Was really looking forward to it as soon as it won the Pole. I love this movie. The cast has two of my favorite actors and the story funny, exciting and wrecks me at the end every time. Loved your reaction and it was a nice cry with you 😃 Thank you for what you're doing and that you watched this one 😊

0lis

Dearest, most precious Lamar, I tip my fedora in your direction.

Carol_White

On the ending, I have heard racers say they adopt the same attitude as Speirs’ advice, “I accept that I’m already dead, to fight the fear.” I’ve also heard racers describe their profession as driving a very flimsy, ridiculously powerful rocket and the explosive fuel is right behind their seat. No matter how well built the car, regardless of the weather, they push their machines right up to and beyond their limit. Recall how often Ken raced Shelby’s car in the red? Even as wonderfully built as that car was, you cannot push an engine that hard for that long and not expect it to blow sooner or later and the racers know and accept that risk to do what they love to do.

Lamar Smith

This was a fun reaction to watch. First time I've seen this movie, which is a surprise since I'm a racing fan and I know this story. I like how you were really into Ken Miles and his family dynamic. You appreciated his supportive wife and his kid, so it really hit you hard. That's what good movies do - they pull us in to the story, whether or not you are "into" the subject matter beforehand.

Johnny

it will be tonight or tomorrow!!

Cassie

Just let it out Sam 😂❤️

Cassie

I’m sure there are people here much more knowledgeable than I about racing, but it is my understanding that a fantastic driver in a mediocre car, so long as it doesn’t fail completely, will beat a mediocre driver in a fantastic car. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but I’m to understand that to be the case. Of course there are still differences but at that level there aren’t mediocre drivers. They get found out and lack of success will drive them out. Like all pro sports it’s quite Darwinian. Good ones rise, poor ones starve or are replaced.

Lamar Smith

A must watch for the history. This story makes everyone cry. This video proves it https://youtu.be/aE0gq9KxHOw

Snapjaw

So, I suspect the audacity of this venture might be lost on you and that’s ok. Ferrari began as a company after WWI. Enzo Ferrari’s, I believe, uncle had been a fighter pilot in WWI and his squadron, as I understand the story, placed a ‘prancing horse’ logo on their planes and Enzo borrowed it as a logo for his company. He favored, as well, the distinctive red color for his race cars and the super exotic sports cars sold to the super rich to finance his team. Personally, Enzo hated those sports cars and hated the snobs who bought them even more. Enzo was a racer at heart but realized to finance the single most dominant racing team in history, he had to sell his super sports cars. On your car/driver question, the answer is a resounding both. If the car breaks down, doesn’t matter how good the driver is. Teams with the best pedigrees, most wins and most money attract the best drivers. Getting asked to drive for Ferrari is the same as getting called up by the Yankees. Im sorry, I’m not familiar with Canadian hockey teams but surely there’s a club little Canadians dream of playing for more than any other. To set your sights on overturning Ferrari is an enormous ask.

Lamar Smith

Dearest Cassie, why do you feel you’re talking to yourself? I’m sure I speak for so many people here, we feel you’re talking to us. Straight, directly, endearingly right to each and every one of us.

Lamar Smith

Precious angel Cassie. I’ve sent you an early Christmas Gift. Due to arrive Nov 2 from Amazon to your PO Box. Please check your Patreon messages from me for explanation. Could I trouble you for some indication you received this?

Lamar Smith

such a great film, first time ever getting the chance to watch it. gave myself a headache trying so hard to hold back the tears lmao. great video! keep up the good work! :D

PKx_Phant0m

Did I miss the schedule for Patreon movies this week? Thought today was going to be Star Wars Episode II. You're killin me smalls. Lol.

Verteron

ooh I can't wait to watch Cassie's reaction. I saw this in the theater when it was released.

Mannygogou

Very true words!!

Cassie

i’ve heard such good things about Logan! I’ve seen only a couple X men films and out of order-a proper marathon might be in order!

Cassie

What is the “big race” then if not Le Mans? and yes Christian Bale is incredible- The Fighter vs Cheney as far as appearance, mind blowing

Cassie

i was thinking the same thing!!!

Cassie

hahahaha great idea!!

Cassie

aahhh need to see that one, i just ran out of time, on my short list!

Cassie

If you're interested in learning more, I'd suggest the documentary, "The 24 Hour War" (100% rotten tomatoes) and "Shelby American," (Netflix) (83% rotten tomatoes.)

Jon Johns

Also, as you're learning, a great movie isn't always about the story, or setting, or plot, but rather the characters, and your connection to them. Think about the films you haven't cared for as much, and you might find you've no real connection with the characters.

Jon Johns

Ok, I'm so glad I'm not the only one to shed blubbering tears at movies, thanks for that, Cassie. I encourage you to look up the director, James Mangold's films, you might be surprised at how many you've already seen, and loved! Put his name on your directors list. In my top 3 films of all time is "Logan" by Mangold, as a sort of 'wrap-up' or coda to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine character, this film will just tear you up. I don't know if you'd like it, it's rated a Hard 'R' for excessive violence, but the story is very good, if you're an X-Men fan. Please drive safe 😉

Jon Johns

It's a nice movie, in the same style I prefer "Rush" (2013). But the cast is great and the direction is superb!

Grégory Gautier

Stay curious, educate yourself, empathize, grow....you just ran the perfect lap. Stay safe Cassie, nothing wrong with public transportation. Interesting side note: Shelby was married seven times, had a kidney and heart transplant. Like his racing strategy, he wasn’t afraid to swap out parts.

Grinznmore

one of my favorite reactions of yours from the get go. How you saw the family, got excited about the driving. Christian Bale never fails to disappoint and will lose or gain weight depending on the role like no one else. Probably not good for his long term health. Most race fans don't even know about the le mans race because it gets no air time.

Sean Stuart

I love the movie but I am still surprised Ford allowed them to make it. Did they read the script?! LOL

RX2904

Would love a Cassie PiB merch t-shirt "24 Hours of Le Mans" in bold and below it in delicate script "Do they have snacks?"

Allen Bond

This is a truly excellent movie. I am really happy that it worked its way through the polls to get a reaction!

James Leet

Ken Miles' death was very tragic. We all want to see the incredible talent and close battles between drivers, but sometimes it goes horribly wrong. Unfortunately I've seen it go wrong twice as a racing fan. Dale Earnhardt in 2001 and Dan Wheldon in 2011. It's really hard as a kid when you find out your heroes aren't invincible. Can't even imagine how their families felt. Was such a great movie, but that ending just destroys me.

Josh Phillips

Christian Bale's best performance is no doubt in American Psycho, IMO. Would've been a good October movie to watch

Shehab Dawoud

Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman is a must

Heartfelt

i’ve been wanting to watch that!!

Cassie

It's a pretty damn good film my friend. You'll love it as well.

G

It's an excellent film. Some were shocked that it beat out some classic films on the Sports Bracket. I'm glad you appreciate how good this film is. Seabiscuit and Cinderella Man are both excellent films as well. I'm saddened when I saw that it's facing each other on the Runner Up Bracket.

G

Honestly, I did not even expect this movie to be emotionally churning. I have not seen this movie as yet. Interested to see what was so moving about it.

Brian McGovern

If you liked this one, I think you would also enjoy Rush (2013). Although it seems that one is less favored by the voters on the polls, seems it got beaten again during Round 1.

Gábor Árki

Thanks for the sanity check.. i just rolled out of bed and my brain is nowhere near functional yet

Wirenfeldt Jr

We're too early - it's still encoding on their end. Takes less time to encode the lower resolutions, so they're available first. Try again in ~5-10 minutes and maybe 1080p+ will be available.

TechPriest

Is the Vimeo video not available in higher resolution?

Wirenfeldt Jr

Just when you thought they don't make em like this anymore, they make this

Sahitya

Sahitya is exactly right. There's a reason this won. It's an amazing movie. I remember watching it and in spite of the length I would have easily gone back into the theater and watched it again! Great acting, great story, awesome action.... just a fantastic movie. I look forward to rewatching it with everyone :D

MattN

Cassie, that's why it won...vroom vroom
