Beetlejuice - Full Reaction

Hey guys!! Here's my full reaction to Beetlejuice. Ben loves Beetlejuice and would watch it around Halloween growing up so I thought I'd give it a try. It's definitely different from my normal go-to Halloween movies! I had no idea that this was a Tim Burton film until I started the movie, it definitely fits his style! A lot of words come to mind when trying to describe this movie... words like silly, chaotic, and strange haha.  At least now I can say I've seen Beetleju... (won't say it three times). Hope you enjoy!

Like Richard Elfman's "Forbidden Zone," this is a freaky weird movie, which is probably why I've only seen it three or four times. Other Tim Burton movies are easier to get into. Maybe it requires multiple viewings to really appreciate it. I can't believe that I'd forgotten Robert Goulet was it in! That may be enough to get me to watch it again.

I didn't watch this movie as a kid because I was age 24 (and already married) when released. I remember how popular. I appreciated the movie. I like that it not really a horror movie. Michael Keaton is hilarious and I think perfect for the part. I have more nostalgia for Edward Scissorhands. As for Michael Keaton movies, I watched Night Shift (1982) and Mr. Mom (1983) when released, and very much liked both. Watched Clean and Sober (1988) when released (same year as Beetlejuice), and remember initially thinking his role in Clean and Sober was out of character, but that movie demonstrated Keaton's range as an actor.

I believe she has already seen Titanic.

I like the musical better than the movie. You get some of Lydia's backstory, which makes for more emotional depth, they pulled back on the gross/creepy vibe a bit for Beetlejuice without losing the manic energy, they tweaked Delia to make her a bit more fun and likeable, not to mention the music is great. If you like musicals at all, and ever get a chance to see it, check it out.

Totally agree. It’s Tim Burton style. I love his work then and even more now. Left Disney because they didn’t like some of his production ideas. Eventually Disney decided to pick up his stuff after many success when he was gone for awhile.

HorrorFan87

Also he was going to create and directed a Superman movie back in the 90’s. There’s a documentary out there about it The Death of Superman Lives, What Happened.

HorrorFan87

Love Tim Burton movies. He worked for Walt Disney Studios when he start out then left for awhile and came back. I suggested 2 more Tim Burton Movies: Edwards Scissorhands and A Nightmare Before Christmas.

HorrorFan87

I’ve sent you an early Christmas present. Arrival to your POBox from Amazon Nov 2. Please check your Patreon messages from me for explanation and other stuff.

You’ve seen Beetleguese! You definitely can scratch that off from the list, couldn’t be so proud from a movie goer!

FranciscoGios

Would not recommend watching this when you’re sick and heavily medicated. Will never do that again lol

Josh Phillips

This is still my favorite Tim Burton movie. It's so fun and creative. Probably seen it about a dozen times over the years and still holds up. Wonderful movie.

Negative

Thats how i feel every time i see him in a movie.

Patrick Toscano

took my 16 year old g/f to see this (i was 17) when it first came out at the cinema, cost me a fortune. Then she dumped me 3 weeks later, broke my heart, lol :)

I just re-watched this! Great choice and great timing as far as I'm concerned. Beetlejuice came out on March 30th, 1988. Less than a month after I was born. So I feel some weird connection to it or something. I know that sounds odd but I'm an odd person and it is an odd movie so there you go!

Aaron Hawkins

its the first time for me , I was pleasantly surprised , Corpse Bride is my go to Tim Burton movie

Did I miss the Halloween Poll?! Don't get me wrong, I love Beetlejuice, but I would have thought "Sleepy Hollow" would have been a more Halloween appropriate Burton film, just a little closer to the scary end of things. Still a great choice though. A couple of notes Cassie. Catherine O'hara is a Canadian actor/comedian. The other thing is do not get too hung up on the effects. Even in the 80's it was in the cheese range, but that is just Burton's style... a mix of gothic, childlike wonder, and a funhouse mirror. It was just about watching and having fun. Though you are right, a few more viewing will probable help you with this one. :)

Hahaha unlike most of the comments I actually love this movie. It was something I saw when I was a kid, was enamored by, and used to watch every year around Halloween. When I was a kid a had the BIGGEST crush on Wynona Ryder because of this movie. Haven’t it in forever but it still has a special place in my heart. Thanks Cassie! I really enjoyed this 🥰🥰🥰 By the way, I really love the new haircut!! Looks great!! 😄

I fast forwarded to your end reaction and you just confirmed what I have believed for thirty years- dumb de dumb dumb dumb movie lol

It's funny how you asked at the beginning if Johnny Depp plays Beatlejuice since this came out in 88 which was 2 years before Edward Scissorhands came out(Burtons very first collaboration with Depp). A lot of people have remarked that if Tim Burton had made this movie in the 90's the role would have likely been played by Johnny Depp and they're probably right. Anyway, I love this movie so much! It's so imaginative and weird, plus it's got a good story and I love the characters. I wish they had made a sequel to this so we could see more of Lydia and the Maitlands. This movie came out the year before Batman which Tim Burton also directed and started Michael Keaton, so you were right to say that he played Batman. Keaton also played the Vulture in Spider-Man Homecoming. Plus I love quoting the line about seeing the Exorcist 167 times. :D

Cody Nelson

Trying to figure out the movie is kind of like the Handbook for the Recently Deceased... "...this reads like stereo instructions..." My personal favorite spook is the Shrunken-head Huntsman.

Michael Labs

92 and .5 just got called. I like a wide variety of movies but this was a big thunk for me. What added insult to injury was the top-shelf actors in the movie. What a waste. Obviously, others think differently based on the ratings. I'm glad many enjoyed it. If you like watching movies, you accept that some are not going to resonate.

Grinznmore

What number you got?

softshoes

I was trying to find the incantation to end the movie. No character development. Just special effects slapstick. I could relate to the boredom of the waiting room.

Grinznmore

I don't know if you're reading that but I'll try anyway.I know that it's actually not okay to wish for something but I just dare.I think that the movie Titanic is really worth seeing. I and probably most of you would be happy if you take some more time to look at this masterpiece of film history.

Julian

Beetlejuice is definitely something you should watch few times I mean saw as a kid watching then and now I fully get what they were trying to do. Also as a tim burton fan try not to understand tim burton world its never really meant this the guy who took darkness and turn it into a beautiful work of art. The only movie I know that does not have tim burton weirdness is Big Eyes

MatthewBrown74m

"They blew up Congress! Hahahaha!"

As I said before, there's nothing else like this one. It does probably help to see it as a kid - a kids mind is more accepting of the zaniness (kids shows be like: here's some ninjas but they're also giant turtles that live in the sewer and love pizza, and kids are like: yup got it). But I suspect it will grow on you. Certainly you're not going to get half those images out of your head any time soon. ;) I would just like to take a moment to say Catherine O'Hara is amazing. I hope everyone who discovered her in Schitt's Creek goes back to watch this and Best in Show. And Danny Elfman's music is amazing as well. Not quite his first film score, but one that made a lot of people sit up and notice a major new composing talent had emerged. So energetic and I love how he works a bit of Day-O into the opening title.

Robin T

You think this is different and weird you should watch Mars Attack that made by Tim burton

MatthewBrown74m

If you haven't seen Multiciplicity yet, it's my next favorite Michael Keaton performance after Batman and Beetlejuice.

Colin Gutierrez

Never seen Beetlejuice so far and it was kind of unexpected. Still half an hour after finishing it I'm just not really sure what to think of it. This was probably the most insane and bizarre Tim Burton movie I've seen so far and I think I saw most of what he directed. Michael Keaton's performance was great though. No wonder fans were shocked when he was cast as Batman, especially after this movie. I guess he could probably have pulled off a great take on the Joker too.

Gábor Árki

Hard to get the two songs out of your head. Actually have them on my favorties playlist when you really want an up tempo group of songs that can make you smile.

Matt Mabry

Nice save on not saying beetle juice 3 times. I Never liked this film as a child, So interested in Watching it now. Been probably 25 years.

Bret

A little piece of my childhood! The meal scene... :D Michael Keaton's performance is impressive

Grégory Gautier

such a unique movie. classic 80's

MetallicOpeth

While I love this movie and had fun with this rewatch, I couldn’t shake Jeffery Jones and how he is a child predator… Makes my skin crawl.

djKENTO

This is weird, but if you want a good Tim Burton movie, watch Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. And Edward Scissorhands. And Batman (1989).

Greg McDaniel

"Defending Your Life", it's basically a romantic comedy about what happens after after, it's very clever and it's one of my feel good go to favorites AND it stars a very lovely Meryl Streep.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Tim Burton's SLEEPY HOLLOW would be amazing for next October. Spooky with a few violent scenes, but lots of humor to alleviate the tension. And a love story thrown in for Cassie's enjoyment.

Alex Villarreal

I grew up watching the cartoon. I was surprised at some of the differences when I finally saw this. I also remember the Beetlejuice show at Universal Studios Hollywood when we went there. The guy playing BJ was a pretty good stand-up comic, but I guess you'd have to be in that role.

Texas Anla'Shok

This movie and Goonies, my childhood in two movies 😆

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Love this movie Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

HorrorFan87

You're not alone, me neither.

Gábor Árki

You know I've never seen this movie lol
