Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) - Full Reaction
Added 2021-09-03 02:05:06 +0000 UTC
Hey everyone! Here is the full reaction to Terminator 2: Judgement Day! I invited Carly over to watch this one with me (don't worry she watched T1 with some friends) and it did not disappoint! We ended up watching the theatrical release. Hope you guys enjoy!
Theatrical cut is the best version, at least on first watch. Please continue the series, they are all entertaining.

Great reaction. I love this movie. Unfortunately due to how John came to be, there is no end to it. Skynet and John are intertwined. I liked Terminator 3, and I think that one has a more realistic ending for the franchise. Can totally understand if you want to stop at 2. Nothing wrong with that.
But Terminator 3 is fun, and well worth the watch. While not quite as good as the 2nd one I still really enjoy it. Beyond 3 I'd definitely say don't worry about those. Especially 5-Terminator Genisys. I wasn't a fan of that one. For one Linda Hamilton does not play Sara in it. She's portrayed by Emillia Clark (Game of Thrones). Then there was Terminator: Dark Fate, which was fun, but also weird. It did have Linda returning as Sara which was cool but the story is very strange.
I recommend Terminator 3 but it's cool if you don't continue.

I just now sat down to watch this and loved your reaction. I hadn't seen the movie since it came out and it was an amazing vicarious experience.
Also - I'm holding off to re-watch Point Break (IMHO one of the other BEST films of the 90's) but I'm not sure I can hold out much longer. Hope it comes soon or I might have to just give in without you!

The whole point is that Skynet paniced when they thought they were about to be defeated and so they altered time accidentally trapping themselves in a temporal death loop resulting in the existence of their primary enemy but if they had simply not panicked the resistance and john would have disappeared at the last moment. If Skynet never initiated time-travel then John would never have existed.

also, the whole "meet the pilot" scene gives some depth to Dyson and shows what his initial intent with the new processor is. but who knows if it was Dyson or Cyberdyne that went for all the military contracts? at first Dyson seems to just want to better mankind with that scene but later on time who knows maybe he did see the money and the military contracts and decide it be better idk.

the CPU scene does give some insight into some things, and it is cool how they shot the scene with the mirror and all . I would say it is worth it. also it does give insight into why Dyson was working on the CPU so it kind of does fit in the story ...

Na. This version is the better version. It didn't need all of the unnecessary scenes and the happy "Michael Jackson turned 40" ending was too out of place.

I just paid to see your full reaction of this movie specifically, and low and behold, i found out the hard way... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! You were both watching the censored Theatrical Cut version. I implore you to watch the extended version, please please please!! This version has scenes that literally makes no sense what-so-ever. This version doesn't have the crazy amazing scenes like when they take the chip out of Arnie's head to reset the switch so he can start learning new stuff. This version doesn't have the scene that explains why the T-1000 does the weird scaley thing in the steel mill. You guys literally missed out on like 20 minutes of footage :O FeelsBadMan

Hey, thanks for that. I don't have a problem syncing - I guess everyone does it pretty much as you describe. I was thinking more of how to play both videos simultaneously on the same screen. Like I say, I figured out a method that works - just wondered if there was one simple way that all the veterans use. Maybe even a special app?
Dean A
2021-09-19 23:00:24 +0000 UTC
It's virtually impossible to sync it 100% perfect because you can't press play on both her reaction and your copy at the exact same time. What I do is roll the opening credits on my own copy, find a part where some text just starts coming up, so it's not fully come up, but just started appearing. I pause my copy right there, then start playing the reaction video. and wait until her reaction video starts showing the very same text, then press play on my copy at that exact moment they look identical. Again, it's not 100% perfect, but as close as you're going to get.

I'm new as a patron, is there anywhere here that describes the best set up for watching my own copy and the reaction at the same time. I kind of figured a method out but wondered if there was an easy way that everyone uses?

You’re supposed to use your own copy or stream it. If she played the unblurred video, she’d get hit with copyright violations. It IS a full reaction, uncut unlike YouTube reactions.

you will hear lots of people say T3 sucks but it is not anywhere near as bad as people say and it has some merits that make it worth watching. However, you should react to Terminator Dark Fate which is the return of James Cameron to the franchise. Dark Fate James Cameron's idea for what terminator 3 should have been in his eyes.

I feel a major downfall of T3 is too much comic relief. The "talk to the hand" scene and a few other bits went too far and killed the tone, whereas in T2, the comic relief was there but it was subtle. I think that and if they hadn't gone full CGI, it'd have been much better and closer to being on the same level as T2.

Since everyone is chiming in on their opinions of the follow-up Terminator movies: I honestly feel TERMINATOR 3 is very underrated. Yes, one is initially disappointed that James Cameron didn't helm it. And as a consequence, it doesn't have the same sense of weight or gravitas we got in the first two movies. However, once you adjust your expectations and accept that it will feel different, it really is entertaining as hell.
I didn't see the fourth movie with Christian Bale. However, the fifth movie - GENISYS - is the most incomprehensible movie I've ever seen. It's like they couldn't decide on a plot, so they took random bits from multiple rough drafts and threw them together. It's almost astounding that they decided to commit so much time and money to a "story" that I guarantee not even the writers themselves could explain.
The final movie, DARK FATE, I was disappointed with. It was meant to be a return to the original tone established by the first two movies. But I felt like there were some basic things wrong with it. It's like they didn't have the courage to commit to a new idea. (The new female protector.) And so they hedged their bets and included her AND had returning characters. As a result, the entire product felt diluted, with a lot of characters and plot threads feeling redundant. It's not nearly as bad as GENISYS, but I can't say it's a good movie.

"Must you !?!", what a classic Cassie line. Carly, those types of guns ("Miniguns" with the rotating barrels do exist, they are known as Gatling guns. They are typically found in fighter jets & missile defence systems on ships, though you can get smaller versions for helicopters which is the one in the film.

My parents took me to see this in the theater when I was about 8 (yes, that’s the kind of family I was raised in, lol). They had already seen it and made me cover my face during the dream sequence, but I watched the rest of it. I grew up watching stuff like A Nightmare on Elm Street, though, so it wasn’t a big deal. I don’t let my own kids watch stuff like that, however. 😉
Yes, y’all should definitely stop here. As with the Alien franchise, I consider everything after Aliens to be a bad dream that never actually happened.
Speaking of Aliens, did you realize that John’s foster mother is the actress who plays Vasquez? James Cameron loves using the same actors in different movies of his. He also created the two greatest strong female protagonists—Ripley and Sarah Connor. Screenwriters today should take a page out of his book when writing female badasses.

The theatrical release is the way to go, the special edition just don't feel right, although there is one scene that works better, bit of trivia. You remember the guy who licks Sara's face? Remember when she almost took his head off with a mop handle? Well there is a deleted scene where Dougie and another orderly beat her and taxe her, but the actor didn't feel right about hitting a woman so he kept messing the scene up and Linda Hamilton had to drop to her knees like 100 times. So when the time came she really did hit that guy in the face as hard as she could, without the deleted scene it seems kind of excessive lol

Yup, stop here. The later movies aren't all completely terrible, but none really move the story forward, and none will give you a more satisfying ending.
BUT, should you ever watch this one again, check out the Director's Cut. I think you made the right call watching the theatrical first - it's more tightly paced - but the Director's will sprinkle in some nice extra details that can be appreciated all the better on a second viewing. Including a bit more Kyle ;)

Of the Terminator movies, this is all you needed to see. The others are just action with no soul.
The TV-Show "Sarah Connor Chronicles" was very promising, but watching shows in this format is allways a little bit strange as it takes up so much time. Plus that specific show ended on a cruel cliffhanger and never got a real ending.

Well, I’ll echo mostly everyone else here that this is the best of Terminator. Since most people do this for views I’m not sure if the rest would get more or less. T3 has become passable over time. Salvation was a different look as was Genysis. Dark Fate was considered decent at times, but overall just didn’t recapture the magic of the first two. There was also a show The Sarah Conner Chronicles or something like that which was well received which lasted maybe 4 seasons. Maybe you could check them out on your own time or try T3 and see how well it does with views.

Loved this reaction from your sister and you, was really fun to watch, thank you! As for sequels, my 2 cents:
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - This one is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's nowhere near the quality of the first two, and the story begins to get a little silly but I did enjoy the chemistry and interactions between the three leads and seeing more of the 'origin story' for Skynet.
Terminator Salvation - This one broke off from the franchise main story line by being set entirely in the post-Judgement Day world. I thought Christian Bale played a good John Connor and we get an interesting look at 'life' under machine rule. No Arnold in this one sadly.
After those, the series takes a dramatic turn for the worse...
Terminator Genisys - Is quite terrible and it really didn't help that one of the main story points is revealed in the trailers. The storyline no longer really has much to do with the original story and honestly it's just a cluster fk from start to finish.
Terminator: Dark Fate - Supposed to "reboot" the franchise by continuing the story where T2 ended... words cannot describe how disappointing this was. I think they tried to just remake the first two movies and failed utterly miserably. Even with Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Connor couldn't salvage this dumpster-fire of a movie.
There's also the TV show "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (with Lena Headey as Sarah Connor and set just after T2) which ran for two seasons that I also enjoyed and would definitely recommend over the last two movies though don't expect a full storyline as I believe the show was cancelled.

That was a lot of fun, you guys. Glad to see Carly back again. Very happy that you chose the theatrical cut, as I think the other versions seem forced and unnatural [ducks the shoes that others are throwing at me!]
Perhaps a biiiiiiit too much full-on talking in the first 30 mins or so, but I do understand the inclination with this one :)
Reading the comments, I believe the consensus is for you guys to skip the rest of the Terminator films. That is absolutely the right choice, imo. Is there some good stuff spread out through the other chapters? Perhaps. But the bad far outweighs the good, overall.
Anyhow, another solid reaction. Keep up the great work! :)

Fun fact, in the two scenes where the T1000 imitates a person while that person is on screen, like the security guard in the hospital, and Sarah Connor in the foundry, you'd often think in this day and age that those duplicates were greenscreened in or added with cgi of some sort, but in fact, both the actors playing the security guard and Linda Hamilton playing Sarah Connor, are twins. Same as when there are two Sarah's on screen in the foundry, when the T1000 imitates her.
So when we see Sarah watching another version of herself in the playground dream, in the shots where both of them appear on screen at the same time, the Sarah playing with her baby was Linda's identical twin sister Leslie.

There's so much to love about this movie, even before you realize they don't make them like this anymore. That helicopter really did fly under that freeway overpass; The pilot was ballsy enough to say yes to the stunt, but the original camera crew refused to shoot it because they didn't want to encourage the pilot to perform a deadly maneuver like that and kill himself. James Cameron personally did the camerawork himself while the pilot did it.
Also, the VFX for the T1000 to walk through the barred door was all from custom software. They did the math and wrote their own custom programs to make his liquid flesh melt with the bars and bounce back into a solid form. The Corridor Crew VFX YouTube channel recently tried to recreate the scene with modern technology and they couldn't do it because the standard physics tools don't carry the behavior from that scene at the mental institution.
Combined with the cinematography and editing, this villain was truly menacing. They've re-done the liquid metal concept a bunch of times in the sequels, and not only were the shots unimpressive, no one really felt scared of them after this movie. They didn't have the right setup, the soundtrack, and the animation failed to elicit the feeling of weight (watching future renditions attack felt like watching paper mache flutter around on screen). It was just never done better than this movie, which is damn impressive.
And the story is fantastic. Who woulda thunk it, that the terror from the first movie could be converted into a sentimental character that people would cry over in the second movie? And that great moment of hope, that thumbs-up from the machine as he dies. A beautiful moment in cinema that sticks out in everyone's heads.
Glad you got to experience this and you were so invested!
Dan

First time I've seen this since it came out. I didn't particularly like it then, and I don't now. Much prefer the first one. For some reason the fact that now that Arnold was a big star he had to play the hero and not the villlan rubs me the wrong way. But always interesting to see what other people think, and thoroughly enjoyed the reaction. :-)

If you were, the only ones that would be worth it is Dark Fate as it ignores all the others and is a more direct sequel to T2. Salvation would be okay cause its a good action film and its in the future so thats kind of neat. Rise of the Machines and Genisys are no longer canon and should be ignored unless you really want to watch it all. Personally I still enjoy Rise of the Machines, its fun action still. PS: Your sis is adorable "is it over, is it over" i bet you are very protective of her IRL. I hope we see her again, but maybe something action comedy.

Also wanted to add that I think Linda Hamilton should have at least received an Oscar nomination for this. It's an astonishing change from her character in the first film, and we really FEEL the emptiness and the pain inside her. When she goes rogue to track down and kill Dyson, they play the same musical theme as when the Terminator itself is on screen, showing that for all her hatred and fear of these machines she's spent ten years basically trying to become one herself, an unfeeling robot that won't be stopped. All she has to do is turn off her humanity for a minute and murder a man in front of his family, and three billion people will be saved. And she can't do it. She can't cross that line and become a Terminator. And the guilt on her face when she collapses in tears, the shame that she's failed the world and failed herself, is just amazing acting to me.

I love, love, love this movie to pieces. Saw it at 16 on a Fourth of July afternoon in an almost empty theater and have seen it probably 20 or so times since and can always rewatch it. I remember being awestruck at the vision of a Los Angeles apocalypse, I'd never seen anything like it in a movie. My childhood was filled with a kind of movie which flourished in the 1980s and 1990s, movies which freely mixed elements of action, science fiction and horror, and T2 might be the very best example of this hybrid genre. I think this is James Cameron's best movie (yes, even better than TITANIC, sorry).
That being said! I do still think that this film was an "unnecessary" sequel. The first film told a perfect story in that was a closed loop of causality, everything and every event was accounted for, the ending and the beginning merged together and, at least within the logic of that story, there wasn't anywhere for it to go. In order for T2 to exist, that had to be kind of ignored. In the first film we see that history can't be changed, that everything which has happened was meant to go that way. In this film, suddenly history CAN be changed, creating a huge paradox as Carly pointed out: if they prevent Skynet from being created, then where are these Terminators coming from? How can they even exist? For that matter, how can JOHN even exist, since his father came back in time through a machine created by Skynet? This is known in science fiction as the grandfather paradox: if you go back in time and kill your own grandfather before your father is born then how can you exist? And if you don't exist then you can't go back in time to kill your own grandfather, meaning he doesn't get killed, meaning your father is born after all, meaning you're alive and can go back in time to kill your own grandfather. It's a paradox without a solution, or rather, a different solution in each story which uses it. This movie doesn't really come up with any solution at all. We can assume that the Terminators and Kyle Reese are just "orphans," relics from a future which will no longer occur, who only continued to exist because they had time traveled to a time before or during the moment when their past was changed.
Honestly the movie doesn't really care about settling this, and it's so good I forgive the inconsistency. Unfortunately, changing the movie rules of time travel opened the door to four more sequels of generally low quality, as the new screenwriters tied their narratives into pretzel knots trying to justify the repeated returns of Arnold, not to mention the fact that this cyborg was now 70 years old. Best to go out on a high note and stop here.
Besides its revolutionary use of computer graphics, this movie set another record: the first film with a budget exceeding $100 million. They paid Arnold with a $12 million private jet! Nowadays a $100M movie is almost low-budget.

Great reaction as always! It's nice to have someone to watch these movies with again (lifelong bachelor here). And great to see Carly back. Personally, I don't think the rest of the series is worth watching. T3 was OK but there's a major drop in quality from the first 2. In my opinion the series only gets worse afterwards. I'll be here if you watch em though, it's been a while since I've seen any of the sequels after T2.

Some of the sequel movies are 'okay', in terms of just being solid action flicks but having to follow up on Terminator 2 is pretty much impossible, anything is going to just seem really weak in comparison. Personally wouldn't mind you keep going but you can stop here and end on a high note.

I love the callbacks that they did in this movie, whether it be to earlier in the film or to the previous entry. I think everyone recognizes the famous "Hasta la vista, baby" callback, but I also enjoyed the "Easy money" one with the ATM hacking device.
Some of the T1 callbacks were having Arnold say "I'll be back" before driving a vehicle into a building, or the protagonist holding his hand out to help Sarah up, saying "Come with me if you want to live." One that I just noticed this viewing was after the antagonist terminator gets into the vehicle near the end, he looks at the passenger and says "Get out" in both films (Semi in T1, Helicopter in T2). I imagine there's a few that I'm missing.

Does anyone know what cut this is ? The one I'm trying to watch along with is edited very differently :(

The directors cut and the extended version are nearly identical, with the extended version having 2 extra scenes that don't really add much (T1000 in John's bedroom and the futuristic happy ending). I think the directors cut is the best. The scene with sarah nearly smashing arnold's chip and the bits added during the final chase are great.

Wow, thats certainly an opinion lmao.
The movies after this have a lot of problems, but "feminist propaganda" isn't one of them.

T2 is the high water mark for the franchise. Watch the rest if you want to, but it's not really necessary.

P.S.--bring Carly back for a Harrison Ford (The Fugitive, Sabrina, etc.).

As usual, awesome reaction :D I really love when both of you are on because you're both wicked wholesome. You nailed it on the head with ending it with this movie. Like the other commenters brought up earlier, the sequels to this movie aren't the best. I personally like to end it with this one.

While I agree with consensus regarding skipping most of the Terminator sequels after this one. I do recommend 2009's TERMINATOR SALVATION, which takes place entirely during the future war with Christian Bale as John Connor.

The series peaks with this one, T3 is ok but beyond that, definitely get diminishing returns. T2 is a good place to stop. Time would be better off completing the John wick series.

The playground Sarah Conner was indeed Linda Hamilton. The T-1000's version of Sarah Conner at the end of the movie was played by Linda's twin. (when the focus was on the real Sarah as she pulled her gun up and told John to get down). :)

This was a good reaction girls. But I noticed the t2 that I have and have watched many times included way more scenes this one. It was hard to watch along because of that. I guess I have the directors cut which i think is actually better. But oh well

I love Terminator! It's my favorite time traveling series. I get it if you want to end it here, cause it's the best terminator film. and the third and fourth are not super highly regarded. I will say the third is my favorite not because of the action or other aspects, but because of the philosophical implications. A lot of terminator is about the concept of fatalism. If the terminator ever succeeded, it would end the "savior of the world." If humanity ever stopped the robot takeover, it would have stopped the "end of the world" which would stop the terminator from being sent back. A lot of time travel fiction says that the hero can control the future. However, terminator is one of the few that is completely fatalistic; It tells you that you can't change the future, the past, or the present, they all exist simultaneously.
While I definitely don't agree with this philosophy, it is very unique in the film world. Additionally I love the idea that we don't know everything about how the world/time works.

As someone that grew up watching Terminator 1 and 2 on repeat, the sequels are not worth watching. Terminator 1 and 2 are a perfect 1-2 punch. I remember being so excited for Terminator 3, and being so crestfallen and disappointed. More and moreso after each sequel. As far as I am concerned, Terminator 2 is the ending the series deserves and the rest don't exist.

While I only consider the first two terminators as canon, I feel that terminator 3 is a genuinely worthwhile and entertaining movie to watch in its own right, a sort of “ What If” as you will. Terminator Salvation and Terminator Dark Fate are both terrible in my opinion, but that’s just my opinion; others may feel differently. As always, thanks for watching, it’s a genuine treat to see another enjoy these movies for the first time.

I do not know if this is mentioned by either in the reaction, but the young Sarah Connor in the dream sequence is not Linda Hamilton. It is her identical twin sister. I just looked on IMDB and found out she passed away just over a year ago. She also appears in the surgery seqence although that may only exist in the extended version of the movie.

You can tell right off the bat something's different about this Terminator. The first one killed the first people he met with no provocation. This one knocked a few people around but didn't actually kill anyone. And then we send him off with "Bad to the Bone". Great way to make audiences question how we're supposed to feel about this one.
The comparisons between the two assassins is intersting as well. Arnold's was a cold, methodical killing machine. The T-1000 at times seems to show signs of actual sadism. And then there's the appearance, of the two. Arnold is, well, Arnold. He commands attention when he appears. Robert Patrick just looks like a normal Joe. And that just makes him more menacing.
And here's some reminiscing with the T-1000:
