The Terminator - Full Reaction
Added 2021-08-10 06:41:05 +0000 UTC
Here is the full reaction to The Terminator! This was better than I thought it would be. I had no idea Arnold was going to be the bad guy and I really loved Kyle Reese! I was stressed about the absolute impenetrable-ness of the terminator, got a little confused about the time travel stuff, I didn't like the music, I did like the love and it still left me wanting to know more. Guess I'll just have to watch the next one ;)

I've been trying to go back and watch your full reactions when I watch a movie again, and this one came up today! Glad you enjoyed it, though you said you didn't like the music much. Oddly enough, the music is a very deliberate choice by James Cameron to have it all be synthesizer, "industrial" sounding music to further cement the atmosphere of the machines and take away human touches, especially once Sarah and Kyle escape the nightclub. Next up, watching your full reaction to T2! :)

So the theory as I understand it is that Sarah probably had a son named John with the guy who stood her up and that John went onto be a pretty good soldier, raised by a single mother, probably went into the military as one of his only career paths and that John would survive, meet Kyle Reese and send him back to protect Sarah. Then the second time that happened Kyle fell in love with Sarah and told her all about her son John. Sarah would then give birth to Kyle’s son who would be a different John, John B. This film is at least the 3rd time this has happened.

Just rewatched it and I have to say, the 5.1 mix is a masterclass of taking mono and ripping it to surround. The sounds maintain their punch but also let you know where they are in the space. Felt super immersive.

I had such a crush on Michael Biehn (Kyle Reese). I love when he was telling her about the picture and wondered what she was thinking about at that moment and then we learn that she was actually thinking about him when the picture was taken.

HI. My first post but been following you for quite some time. Loved your reaction. Also really like how you keep your mind open to these movies where your prior thoughts woukd have been that you would not enjoy watching it. As for this movie in particular I will highly recommend you watching the next terminator movie as it will answer most of the questions that you had at the end of watching The Terminator. As far as Reece, yes he will be alive in the future because he is born later on possibly even after the nuclear war occurs. As for time travel, don’t feel bad it is a very difficult concept to grasp. But you pretty much said what actuslly happens. So Reece goes back in time to father John Connor. Without John, Reece cannot go back 8n time to do this. But since John was there in the future, what happened in the past ALREADY had happened. So sending Reece back in time from the future keeps what happened in the past “ stable”. By doing si he is not changing the future but more or less preserving the future as it has already happened by the time Reece gets to go back in time. I know i know it hurts my brain trying to think about it and even more so trying to explain it. Thank you for another great video to watch from you. Eric

Hi I’m a new subscriber and this was my first full reaction video/watch along. Really glad you got chance to see this the second one is amazing. But not sure if someone has already pointed this out but the guy with the blue hair at the beginning was Hudson (Bill Paxton from Aliens. And Kyle Reese was Hicks in Aliens as well. Looking forward to seeing what you think of Blade Runner as it’s one of my favourite Sci-Fi’s

You might not have read my comment through. I specifically said for her to avoid the "Director's Cut," which is a cut that has the inferior cheesy ending.
However, if she watched the "Special Edition," it essentially would be an extended cut of the movie, but it retains the ending that everyone likes with its more ambiguous tone.

Chandler, the "special edition" has many of the deleted scenes intact, but I believe it retains the ambiguous "highway ending" that most people - including Cameron himself - prefer. The "Director's Cut" would be a mistake, as I believe it has the "playground ending" that no one likes.

James Cameron had nothing to do with Terminator Salvation either. The only sequel after T2 Cameron has hands on writing was "Dark Fate" (which is how they got Linda Hamilton to return) and we know how that turned out.
But I see your point about Salvation. I liked that one as well. After Salvation, they lost me.
Mr. Writhms
2021-08-12 19:26:03 +0000 UTC
I refuse to watch the theatrical cut. DC is preferred. Hell even a scene with somebody returning for a few min made the whole version worth while. More added stuff to make some scenes make more sense. Just a better version 100%. If you're a real fan of the series, DC is the way to go.

I think T3 is hot trash personally. (I don't mean any offense to anyone who likes it.) My brother likes it. I just dont think its cannon. It's not James Cameron's story. The only Terminator movie that really tried to do something other than just copy the original formula is salvation. I think that is the only one that lives up to the first 2 in its aesthetic as well. But again its not perfect and many people hated on it because of christian Bale yelling at a grip being recorded and leaked.

I agree with Michael. In fact if you watch the deleted scenes that make up the directors cut With the audio commentary on he explains why he cut the scenes and all of them are cut for a reason and make it a better movie. The director cut is just a studio thing to sell more copies. (Not all director cuts) just saying this is one of those.

I agree with Cathrine. Good writing trumps special effects, big stars and high production values 9 times out of 10 in my opinion. I won't go into the reasons why I dind't like Terminator 2, cause that could spoil it for Cassie and others watching it for the first time. But in short I felt the story was better in the first. But each to their own. :-)

No, Andrew, it’s the writing. The first one was taken from a Harlan Ellison story called The Soldier From Tomorrow. Ellison sued Cameron for stealing his work. Ellison is considered one of the best sci fi writers and it shows in this film. The second one is good, but I found it more pretentious and I didn’t like some of the characters. I never watched any more of the franchise.
I don’t need high production values or over the top acting to appreciate a movie. A good plot, excellent writing and good acting satisfies me. I can let my imagination handle the rest.

James Cameron had trouble finding financing the movie and had to have a bare bones budget. Another problem was his ideas we too advanced for what CGI could do in the early 80s. Showcasing Schwarzenegge's intelligence: he tried to get the line changed from "I'll be back" to "I will be back" because he knew advanced A.I. wouldn't use contractions. Lol and because he had a hell of a time saying "I'll".

This is definitely a throwback! Terminator 2 I have seen countless times but I have only seen the first one once, when I was a kid. So, it was nice to revisit it, and all of the parts I forgot. You're right Cassie, the music is pretty bad... and the fx were pushing it but it's literally been decades since I am seen it and was nice to see it again(almost) for the first time. While I agree the music was bad, there was hints of the theme song from the second which was cool. And, it was cool to see hints of who Sarah Connor will be... That was a lot of fun, thanks!

Also, I would say, while they are fun movies for a flick, Terminator gets... eh... well... worse after the second one. They kind of lose the plot. 1 and 2 are what are considered the best of the bunch. 2 defiantly is a hit. But, 3 and on are wonky as wonky gets.

Also I often have seen people seem to assume cuts get made in movies because they were not a good enough scene or disrupted flow etc? That can be true, but it seems in actuality most often its simply because movie execs were stricter on runtime - even in modern movies. So most cut scenes tend to actually add a LOT, and Cassie is always wanting more back story and explanation, so those could be some fun additional vids, dont see people doing that too often do you? like follow up react on cut scenes from movies and so on.

Enjoyable to see your adapting thoughts to this as per usual - an interesting note is that around the 48 min mark, you noted 'is this world blowing Kyle's mind?' If you go and search to find the cut scenes from this movie, there is a scene which was not included in the original movie, where Kyle has a full meltdown because he cant cope with seeing the beauty of the natural world, its a shame it wasn't included as its a pretty interesting scene as he's helping to convince Sarah about her importance and why she shouldn't give up.
There is an even more interesting cut scene from the end of this, but I dont want to really mention about it as its somewhat spoilery. All I would say is that people seem to get very confused about Sarah and John Connor's ability to change the future, seems to be a lot of confusion about the Time Travel in these first two movies, which is weird because its pretty straightforward.
You're definitely getting your head around time travel more - its not as complex as you think, you're getting it but because it can be a little headache inducing, its like you're almost trying to overthink it, sometimes in time travel especially with time loop events there's no actual clear answer because its dealing with things we cant know, or that are paradoxical, but thats just part of it.
In this movie, its what is known as a closed time loop, Ive discussed time travel in that post about Arrival before now. Basically this and the second one are reasonably plausible in as much as the suspended disbelief of time travel in movies is a thing.
After the first two Terminators, the time travel aspect is not even really worth thinking about - its just hollywood nonsense to enable them to keep making movies, and thats about as much thought as it deserves.

In the immortal words of Beavis or Butthead; "These effects aren't very special". :-D Jokes aside, I loved this movie when it came out, and still enjoyed it, but I was shocked how bad the effects looked a couple of decades later. I remembered them as amazing. Ditto for the music. This is the only Schwarzenegger movie I like. He was made for the role. A wooden actor playing a machine. I didn't care for the follow up, but I know I'm in a huge minority there. :-)

Hopefully you watch Terminator 2 and Blade Runner 2049 because both are some of the greatest sequels ever

A classic movie without any doubt. It really reached the stratosphere with terminator 2 though. T2 is one of the best sequels made.

The first couple movies are easy to u derstand but it get super complicated as far as time travel goes with the sequals and the prequels. Had to look up what was going on In the later movies but it all clicks as you watch them.

The sequel to this was my all-time favorite action movie for long time... until "Mad Max Fury Road" came along.
Terminator 2 is definitely a MUST see. 😎
And please watch it with your sister. 😁

I agree with your time travel paradox confusion and not liking the cheesy 80s techno music during action sequences (although the actual theme song in the intro is a classic). I think you'll really enjoy the sequel. It's widely considered one of the best science fiction/action movies ever and a much better film in every way than this one, which was a surprise hit at the box office despite mixed reviews when it came out.

SO. The time travel stuff! Let me see if I can unravel this knot:
This story is an example of what is called a predestination paradox, also known as a closed loop. In this story, the evil computer, Skynet, tries to alter history in 2029 by sending a Terminator back to kill Sarah Connor in 1984, to prevent John's birth. In doing so, Skynet actually CREATED the circumstances by which John was born in the first place. So history was not changed, because the two time travelers, Kyle and the Terminator, had ALWAYS been a part of history. History required their sudden appearance in 1984 in order to proceed on course. Kyle dies in 1984, but a few years later he's born and lives his life until he vanishes in 2029, flying back through time.
This story implies that time travel can't change history, because it's all already happened, and if you go back, you were always back there, always a part of history, even if you weren't recorded in the history books. There's a deleted scene from this movie where Sarah suggests almost the exact same thing you do, that they should find out where this evil computer in the future is built and stop it from being built, but Kyle flat out refuses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTG8CV4N4Ek
After this movie came out in 1984 and was a big hit, James Cameron's next directing job was ALIENS. Some of the actors in TERMINATOR show up again in that movie. Michael Biehn, who played Kyle, was cast as Corporal Hicks, the Marine who takes over after their first battle with the Aliens. Lance Henriksen, who played the white police detective who you said looked familiar, was cast as the "artificial person" Bishop. And one of the punk rockers who got killed by the Terminator in the opening scene was Bill Paxton, who came back in ALIENS as Private Hudson.

This was a low-budget movie that really became a massive success. But the sequel was definitely a cultural and special effects touchstone for its time. Plus, a much better movie.

This movie is a classic and I can't wait to watch the reaction. However Terminator 2 is legendary and some argue the best sequal action movie ever made.
