Jurassic Park (1993) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Tried to get this up yesterday but took longer than I thought. Here's the full reaction to the 80s/90s/00s poll winner, Jurassic Park! I know there were a lot of you that hoped my sis could watch this one with me, but we're still in different countries until next week :/. With that said, this was much different than I expected. I thought it was going to be a friendly dinosaur theme park type flick haha so seeing people get bitten in half was quite the shock! I can see why this is such a fun/nostalgic classic for so many. Hope you enjoy!

Jurassic Park (1993) - Full Reaction

Comments

I was exactly 15. Great timing Mr Spielberg

Andrew Jackson (snabbk..)

Cassie: "... every 15-year old boy's dream movie." I was age 30 when this successful blockbuster was released in 1993. Thus, I don't have the nostalgia of watching the movie as a kid. When I watched the movie when released, I thought the movie okay. I liked the premise, special effects, acting, and cool scenes. I had developed a crush on Laura Dern 3 years earlier when Wild at Heart released. I liked Jeff Goldblum. I think my favorite aspect was how the movie depicted intelligence of velociraptors (even if not accurate -- that's beside the point). For my personal interest/entertainment, I rated the movie about 6.5/10 if I remember. I was more taken with other movies released that year, such as Schindler's List (Spielberg), The Fugitive, True Romance, Dazed and Confused, In the Line of Fire, and Searching for Bobby Fischer.

They were a mix, but the action scenes with T-Rex and Raptors were the first feature film using a full CGI character. The documentary series "Light & Magic" has an excellent episode describing how it all came about.

Sorry I'm late to the party but, in the book, Tim did lure a Raptor into the cold storage by leaving a trail of steaks. :)

DesertSwordsman

I know I'm late to the party but I just really wanted to discuss how Spielberg achieved the water rippling in the cup for the T-Rex's first appearance. He had a specific idea in his mind and they tried just about everything to match what he envisioned, with no success. One example was they used a sub woofer to pump out low frequency bursts, but the ripples would move from side to side and have too much 'noise'. So what they ended up doing was completely cut out the the portion of the ford explorer underneath the dashboard and the cup of water. Then attached a piano wire from the dashboard/bottom of the cup, straight down. Once pulled tight they found a simple pluck of the wire caused the desired effect. The ripples started at the CENTER of the cup and moved outward with no extra 'distortion' (noise) in the water. And that right there, first is incredible but also speaks to how much work goes into these films that you would never realize. Wow do I miss movies like this. Pre heavy CGI, movies had a feel of wonder and amazement to them. They would make you ask yourself, "how in the heck did they do that?" Don't get me wrong CGI is cool and all that but I think that's exactly it. It is cool. A fully CGI landscape or character looks very cool to see, (at first anyways) but IMO, I don't feel it ever crosses the line into sheer amazement and wonder which forces us to ask the question which for me, was always a part of movies "how did they do that?!" Also fun/not so fun side note, this was the movie that stopped Arnold Schwarzenegger's reign as box office champ. Last Action Hero (childhood favorite) was released at the same time and due to a LOT of things (that's a whole separate post) it was his first big L. The biggest reason is that it went head to head with Jurassic Park and got destroyed. Something Spielberg even references in Ready Player One.

Hi Cassie, another great reaction! I remember they really hyped this movie before it opened and interestingly in all the trailers, they never actually showed the dinosaurs which was brilliant because it made more people want to see them and had to pay for the ticket. I think it broke a box office record. The first time the doctors stand up in the jeep and see the dinosaur eating the leaves on the top of the trees was the first time the audience sees them. I remember every one in the theater just gasping in awe. For 1993, the effects were amazing. The dinosaurs looked so real. They did a parody in one of the Toy Story movies with the toy dinosaur trying to catch a toy car and they showed it from the side mirror. It looked just like the scene where Jeff Goldblum says must go faster. I’m surprised you didn’t recognize Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury from all the Marvel movies) Looking forward to watching another movie with you 😊

Tara

This was the first movie I can really remember seeing theatrically, at a drive-in opening week when I was 5-6. It can't be understated how hard this movie blew EVERYONE away back then. The only Jurassic film I missed in theaters was Fallen Kingdom because I was sick

Dustin Nelson

MOST of those dinosaurs were not even CGI. The T-Rex, the Raptors, the Dilophosaurus, and the hatchling were all practical effects...animatronics.

Chris Reise

God movies were so much better back then.

Michael Lynch

Hope you gonna watch "The lost world" too, it's a great movie!

Benjies Hockeyblogg

This was the earliest movie i've ever watched. It excited my love for dinosaurs at four years old, or fueled it, i can't remember... This was a great reaction, Cassie, you brought me back to one of my earliest memories. And though it's been said a thousand times, seeing you react to this for the first time is so good. In a way, watching you react reawakened some of my earliest memories. You've given me/us a priceless gift and spared no expense ;) Thank you <3

gianni_hello

Your reaction to one of my favorite movies was PRICELESS!! I had to join your group to watch your full length reaction to What about Bob and it was worth every penny!

Jeff Wolff

So glad I coughed up the rental fee to watch with you Cassie. I started the YT abbreviated version and realized I haven't seen JP in almost 20 years. That was so much fun! Love you and your reactions to these movies. Thanks for an entertaining Saturday evening! 7/31.

Mike H

See this is why people get so mad these days about movies made nowadays because back in the '80s and 90's it was all about the movie itself and now they like to inject things like personal politics and social issues into movies that really takes away from the enjoyment and the story. '80s and 90's movies are brilliant. Whether it be horror, fantasy, comedy, drama, sci-fi, etc 80's and 90's knocked it outta the park! Loved the reaction. ^_^

heyfunny

Also plays lead in The Great Escape!!

Shaun Stuart

Sam Neil never saw Montana because he was killed saving Sean Connery in "The Hunt For Red October" but at least he got to see Montana in this movie!

Shawn Anderson

Cassie, you're editing is getting really good! And this particular reaction is the best you've made yet. Fantastic, thank you! Loved the commercial, too, I usually skip them, but I stayed to the very end!

Jon Johns

Like the one where Dr. Grant, Alex and Tim are in the boat, and Grant has to fight the T Rex off with the paddle.

Greg McDaniel

There is one thing about Fallen Kingdom that impressed me. That they brought Dr. Henry Wu back (the fellow in charge of the Dino hatchery) in the Novel he was much more of a major player. A big important part of the whole dinosaur creation process. And in pretty much the entirety of the original trilogy he just drops out of existence. It's a minor detail, and really doesn't do the movie any real favours, but it impresses me nonetheless.

Phillip Ribbink

I love the Jurassic Park movie, but there is that part of me that wants a bootleg copy. From the universe where they made a rated R version of Jurassic Park that more closely followed the Michael Crichton novel. Because there were some pretty awesome sequences in the novel that would've made awesome action sequences, but didn't make it into this movie.

Phillip Ribbink

Jurassic Park (1993) - epic The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - good (the first 2 are the only ones directed by Spielberg) JP3 (2001) - meh Jurassic World (2015) - sort of reenacts the original in an entertaining way, but 0 points for originality JW: Fallen Kingdom (2018) - garbage, don't waste your time JW: Dominion (2022) - after Fallen Kingdom this won't get a nickel from me, if anything ill torrent it but won't spend any money on it

JTP

The music is by John Williams who did the music for Star Wars and a bunch of Spielberg's movies. One of the most legendary composers in the business.

JTP

And just discovered this: "Could You Survive Jurassic Park?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDnZ6xAdZ3g

Texas Anla'Shok

I watched it in the theater as a kid, and the a couple years ago when the re-released it in theaters. I was able to take my nieces to the same movie I watched in theaters as a kid, to the same theatre I watched it for their first time 😁 I watched their reactions to the movie more than the film itself

Ronny Boss

A few things to cover. The sounds made by the velociraptors are largely recordings of turtles mating. How fun is that? Not sure if I was disappointed with dinosaurs or impressed by turtles. Lol. Also Spielberg felt the violence had to be reduced to prevent an R rating which they felt would hurt family sales which is why some scenes are now just extras waving palm fronds at the camera. Wish they could re-release this as intended. I hope you finish the trilogy. I enjoy them all for different reasons.

Obsolyeet

Those toys were awesome! I had the T-Rex, two raptors, a Pachycephalosaurus, and a dino chew toy—I mean human. My friend had the jeep, pterodactyl, and a few humans for dino kibble.

Michael Hawk

Loved your reaction… but you forgot the popcorn!

Jonathan

You should at least watch the sequel to this movie.

Mr. Killeverything

One of my favorite movies loved it so much and the book. Even tho this move scared me out of my wits as a kid when i saw it in theaters

MatthewBrown74m

Such a great movie, not just for the story but for what the changes it brought for the industry. Remember, before this, no one had ever tried to 3D animate realistic creatures to such an extent and use it in a live action movie. In fact, all the dinosaurs were supposed to be animated by either puppetry or using stop motion, because no one thought it was possible to create 3D models that looked realistic on top of live action footage and with believable motion. It had never been done before! Indeed, when some on the special effects team said that they could do it (make realistic CGI dinos), they were told not to even try. That was when one of them, Steve Williams, decided to work on it in secret, and when he was done, he made sure that the animation was playing on a monitor in the room where the producers were going to meet to watch footage from the movie. When they saw that first CGI animation, they immediately decided to stop using stop motion (no pun intended), and instead use CGI. Also, the man that was hired to supervise the stop motion effects, Phil Tippet, said afterwards "I think that I'm extinct", which might have inspired the line used by the characters played by Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum: Dr. Ellie Sattler : So, what are you thinking? Dr. Alan Grant : We're out of a job. Dr. Ian Malcolm : Don't you mean extinct? The fact that the animation of the dinosaurs still hold up fairly well to todays standard says a lot about just how revolutionary it was, especially to movie-goers of the time. It also set the trend for future blockbuster titles to start using CGI a lot more, for better or worse (especially worse if you ask some star wars fans ;)

AzraRillian

It's funny that you mentioned that Richard Attenborough, who played John Hammond, sounded like the guy who narrates Planet Earth. His brother, renowned nature documentarian David Attenborough, in fact, narrated Planet Earth. Great ear!

Brian Ward

Jurassic Park won all three Academy Awards for which it was nominated. At the same ceremony, Spielberg won Academy Awards for Schindler's List, wich was actually made in the same year as Jurassic Park. At some point the production of the 2 movies overlapped wich took it's toll on Spielberg who said later that it was nothing short of a bipolar experience; going from the ghetto's to a 15ft tall dinosaur chasing a jeep through the jungle.

Martin Smits

My favorite movie and novel of all time. I watch the movie and read the book every year lol. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. Despite the danger, I've always said that if Jurassic Park was real I'd work there for room and board haha. Fun fact: when the lockdown first happened and some theaters were opening again, since there weren't any new movies a lot of them replayed Jurassic Park and it was #1 (again) for a couple weekends at the box office!

LuMarq

Not sure if anyone else said this already but Alan Grant is played by the same actor who was the first mate in The Hunt for Red October. There was a running joke for awhile about how he finally made it to Montana after all lol :D

Michael Barootian

It's a shame you couldn't watch this with your sis. We all missed out on that one, she is adorable. Another great reaction, thanks. I can't believe you didn't recognize Sean Connery's first officer from Red October. In the beginning you see them all in Montana. His main wish, to live in Montana.

softshoes

I think The Lost World Jurassic Park is better than this one even. Though in my opinion it's far scarier. Still have nightmares about the long grass scene from the next movie and the kitchen scen from this one even at age 30.

Andrew Hansen

Great reaction! Being able to hear the movie on your end was a tiny bit annoying but it wasn't too bad :-)

Michael Larsen

Don't get put off by part 2, part 3 and the next ones are actually better

Frans van der Mark

You have really come a long way, Cassie. Here you are; sitting tense and on the edge for two hours and then be like "This movie was great!":-D

Björn Von Knorring

The other Jurassic Park/World movies have their good points and are entertaining in their own right. But this first film is perfect and one of Spielberg's best of his career. So glad you got to see it. Watching it on the big screen was so immersive and an unforgettable experience. I saw it when I was 12 years old, in the theater, the year it came out. I'll never forget.

Philthemovieguy

If you want some other similar films you could try Godzilla 1998, King Kong 2005, Cloverfield 2008 and A Quiet Place 2018

Matt

Here are a couple fun facts about dinosaurs! One as another commenter mentioned the actual velociraptor was only the size of a large wild turkey. The dinosaurs the movie calls velociraptors were at the time not yet discovered or published in scientific papers a couple of years later and they were named utahraptors because that is where they were first found. Now when it comes to paleontology in the field you cannot just use a brush to clean off the bones. We always use rock picks (rock hammers), pick axes, shovels, oyster knives, cyanoacrelate ( a kind of super glue), brushes ( both paint and tooth), also burlap and buckets and plaster of paris. It is hard work digging up dinosaus. Also when you see them brushing off the dinosaur you notice that it is complete and articulated which means that the bones are in a position as if it had just died and they are in order and connected. This is extremely rare! not to say it never happens but dinosaurs bones are mostly found incomplete and weathered. You are most likely to find just a couple of bones and they might be in a terrible condition as they have been buried for millions of years. I would like to recommend an extremely terrific dinosaur museum up there in your neck of the woods in a area called Drumheller which is call The Royal Terrell, it is actually one of the top dinosaur museums in the world and a must see for you and your children. I worked in the lab there and did some digging and research there in the very early 2000's. Great reaction as always, take care and be safe.

Damien beatty

Would have been more appropriate for a mosquito to fly around the room, not a fly. :)

Alex Villarreal

Amazing reaction Cassie! This one really brings me back. I love this movie so much. I was the age of the Lex and Tim when it came out and I loved everything about it. I read the book, watched the movie a million times... so good. Like Aimee pointed out earlier, it's a John Williams' soundtrack so of course it's amazing! We've seen on this channel Jurassic Park, 2 Indiana Jones', Jaws, Schindler's list, and Saving Private Ryan, all Steven Spielberg + John Williams combo. Spielberg really stuck with him because John Williams, I would argue, is the greatest movie composer that ever did it. You don't have to know how John Williams is yet you still know the star wars theme, or raiders theme, or Jaws theme, or superman's theme, or ET's theme, and Jurassic Parks. It really brings the movies to life and adds something that nothing else does. I have seen all of the Jurassic Parks and none of them hit me like the original... but as soon as I hear that theme it brings me back and puts a smile on my face. I could spend forever talking about how great John Williams is or I could just quote Steven Spielberg when he said, "Without John Williams... bikes don't really fly, nor do brooms and quiditch matches, nor do men in red capes, there is no force, dinosaurs do not walk the earth... we do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe" Great react to a great movie!

MattN

I hadn't seen this one in a while and just forgot how intense it was. The T-Rex scene was so terrifying especially in theaters. From the first tremors in the water cup to Muldoon, Ellie, and Malcolm's escape, I barely breathed. The Velociraptors were terrifying as well, but the way that T-Rex sequence was shot and edited was just perfection. This was done before CGI was mainstream and the effects hold up very well today. A lot of it was done through practical effects as well, so that could be the reason. When you said you hoped they were nice dinosaurs, I thought to myself "Oh, you sweet child. You're in for a rude awakening." LOL Glad you enjoyed it even with the scary stuff! Thanks for reacting to one of my favorites! If you enjoy reading I would read the book by Michael Crichton. There's a lot more in there about the theme of science vs. morality. The movie missed some key elements of the book, but it shined on it's own. So, I don't believe reading it will ruin the enjoyment of the movie.

Marty McGee

Crazy! I absolutely love both movies and I never put that together. I feel dumb right now!

Shauna Cohen

Classic Spielberg. He must own popcorn stock. Thanks Cassie. A fun evening.

Grinznmore

Great reaction as usual, Cassie! I always laugh at some of your lines like, "Can we throw him a steak?" when the raptors are in the kitchen. This film was a huge success at the box office, and my parents took me and my brother to see it when we were kids. Of course, back before the internet, trailers and reviews weren't as easily accessible, and my mom was mad at my dad for taking us to see a movie with so many scary parts, to which he just said "I didn't know! It's rated PG-13...". I don't remember it, but my mom said I spent half the movie hiding in her lap during the scary parts. To be fair, I was only 7 years old. :-)

Jeff I.

I say do at least the first three, and do a poll to see if you wanna watch the remakes, if you are still undecided after the first three

Ronny Boss

Also in that scene he describes their hunting style, which is how they out-maneuver Muldoon.

Texas Anla'Shok

Do not know if you mention this in your watch along, but that little boy is Joseph Mazello who was one of the main characters in The Pacific.

Brian McGovern

I’m a purest in some senses but I wouldn’t say stay away from them, still fun. Jurassic world was OK but Jurassic World 2 actually had me. Regardless if it’s a cash grab it’s still entertaining to me at least. I stress the word entertainment, something a lot of people forget when watching a movie these day’s. Nothing lives up to the original but how can you tell someone else not to watch them because you thought they were trash. No disrespect intended, I just think people should decide for themselves and not follow the words of others in a sense.

Jeff Smith

Believe it or not THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN and WAR HORSE came out on the exact same day! That has to be some kind of record.

Patrick Flanagan

There's a quick scene early on in the film, when Grant is trying to fasten his seat belt on the helicopter but is left with two receiving ends instead of a receiver and an inserter. He just ties the two receivers into a knot and the belt works. This is a visual set-up for the discovery later on that the dinos are now breeding in the wild even though they're supposedly all female. Very brief and simple scene but it's a great detail most of us only notice after the 2nd or 3rd viewing.

Patrick Flanagan

"I would like to have seen Montana..." It appears he did see Montana, got his pickup truck, and dug up dino bones haha! Dr. Grant was the same actor as that Russian Officer in Hunt for Red October :P

Logan Sandoval

Have seen this movie so many times and it never gets old. John Williams absolutely nailed the score when he composed it!

Josh Phillips

Spielberg often makes a pair of films back-to-back that are quite disparate from one another. In 1997 he made both THE LOST WORLD and AMISTAD. In 2002 he made MINORITY REPORT and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. In 2005 he made WAR OF THE WORLDS and MUNICH In 2011 he made TIN TIN and WAR HORSE In 2017 he made THE POST and READY PLAYER ONE.

Jack the Narrator

Yes, but that roar is iconic!

Texas Anla'Shok

I was going to post a similar comment about what a versatile fiend Spielberg is. He literally went straight from Jurassic Park to Schindler's List, and they were both released in the same year. Rewatching with Cassie I was struck by two things: The special effects in Jurassic not only hold up, but they're more convincing than some of the effects we get NOW. Also, I never fully appreciated how "meta" this movie is, with talk of commercialization, and shots of the gift shop products - the designs of which matched the branding of the tie-in products for the movie. I also agree that none of the subsequent Jurassic movies lived up to this one. Varying degrees of good/mediocre, with some cool moments. But none of them really jelled like the original.

WastedPo

1993 was a HUGE year for Steven Spielberg's career: JURASSIC PARK was a gargantuan worldwide box office success when released in June of '93, followed 6 months later by SCHINDLER'S LIST, which finally earned him an Academy Award as well as Best Picture and countless other filmmaking accolades. As for the other movies in the Jurassic series, I myself would recommend watching the 1997 follow-up THE LOST WORLD (also directed by Spielberg), as well as 2001's JURASSIC PARK III. However, I implore you to stay far, far, far away from the 2015 and 2018 JURASSIC WORLD reboot films. Despite their box office success, they are a cynical postmodernist cash-grab insult to the JP series, and to movie-goers in general.

Jack the Narrator

I was 11 when this came out and saw it four times in theaters and yes, you could feel those tremors from the T-Rex footsteps. This and the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” are my favorite movie scores. You mentioned the music—it’s John Williams, so naturally it’s amazing. I don’t know if you realized that the guy with the cigarette is Samuel L. Jackson, who you just saw in “The Red Violin” and “Pulp Fiction”. “Hold on to your butts” is a regular phrase said in my family. 😉

Aimee

A real velociraptor would only have come up to your waist. Dilophosaurus was 8 feet tall (poison spit totally made up). T-rex may have actually sounded like this: https://youtu.be/cpipaUfcnmM?t=133 But they did get the fact that dinosaurs were more bird than lizard correct.

Michael Hawk

Good call Cassie when you mentioned the actor you said sounded like the guy who Narrates "Planet Earth" The actor in this is Richard Attenborough, and the gentleman who narrates "Planet Earth" is his brother David Attenborough, and if I am not mistaken they both have been given the title of "Sir".

Damien beatty

The star is Sam Neill, who you last saw as Sean Connery's second-in-command in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Ironically his last words there were "I would have liked to have seen Montana," and here his first scene is digging for dinosaur bones in Montana.

Patrick Flanagan

I remember the toy commercials when i was a kid. With the "dino damage" features they all had and the "JP" brand on them. This is also the movie that made Velociraptor a household name dinosaur. "Independence Day" actually used Jeff Goldblum's line from the T. Rex chase, when he and Will Smith are flying out of the mothership. "Must go faster, must go faster!" That scene with the Brachiosaurus is what every ten-year-old boy has been dreaming for all his life. Did you notice when they switched between the CGI T. Rex and the animatronic one? That gag with the mirror is one of the most parodied scenes in cinema history. "Spared no expense." John keeps saying that, maybe even believes it, but it becomes clear that he is sparing expenses, or cutting corners. That's what Nedry's line refers to when he tells Dodgson not to get cheap on him. "That was Hammond's mistake." And I for one say go all the way. I think the rest are worth at least one view.

Texas Anla'Shok

I'm having an internal debate with myself. I need to hit the sack to wake up for work tomorrow. But I also really wanna stay up and watch this reaction.. I'm leaning more twords staying up 😁

Ronny Boss

First movie I ever saw in theaters. Love this movie!

Jeff Smith

I love all of the Jurassic Park movies. Had to buy some of the toys for my son seen the first and Jurassic World.

HorrorFan87

The first Jurassic Park is a masterpiece. You can’t compete with that. But I find both 2 and 3 to have its qualities too. The genre really don’t start to degenerate until after Jurassic world (the one with Chris Pratt) which still is decent.

Björn Von Knorring

Nice caught this right when you uploaded it and do you know the best feeling. When you nail the sync up on the 1st click lol. I probably spend more time than i should trying to get frame perfect. Cant wait to watch this.

Jack Sego

oh boy! I am wicked excited for this.
