The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Full Reaction

Here is the Father's Day poll winner reaction to "The Hunt for Red October". This was better than I was expecting and suspenseful and fun! It was my first time seeing Sean Connery in a movie (had only seen the SNL jeopardy impression of him before this ha!)  And it was fun seeing Alec Baldwin in a role like this as well. I liked that even though I had never seen it before, it felt nostalgic and like I was seeing a classic.

Sorry this has taken so long to get to you. Moving forward, poll winners will be watched and posted within 3-4 days of the poll ending. I hope you have a GREAT Monday. Also, there won't be a video on Monday or Wednesday this week (on YouTube) as I have a funeral to go to and lots of family in town. I will however be posting a few full length reactions this week on Patreon, What About Bob and Black Hawk Down. Not sure on the exact dates yet but they will be this week.

Thanks so much for being patient with me, and thank you so much for being a patron. Have a great week!!

The Hunt for Red October (1990) - Full Reaction

Comments

There's enough fact behind this film - but we'll never know exactly how much - that when the book was published Tom Clancy got in trouble with the authorities who thought he was leaking sensitive info. In fact, he took info that was all in the public domain and spun it into a story. So although it's fiction, it apparently contained more truth than the intelligence agencies felt comfortable with!

Chris Clarke

The Hunt for Red October is one of the best books ever written, Cassie. I do recommend reading it if you get the opportunity.

Chris Clarke

"I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds." ~ J. Robert Oppenheimer This quote is such a great tie between the two situations of asymmetrical advantage; the American A-Bomb and this Russian 'silent' nuclear sub. Jack Ryan did it Cassie, but it was still so sad... Montana was never reached... Ramius made it to the new world, but with a broken heart of loss. Bottomline, next time... Jack should just write a goddam memo!

Terry Yelmene

This movie is amazing. I watch it at least once a year. If you want to see more of Sean Connery, I recommend The Untouchables, Highlander, and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in that order.

John Casamassa

Did you recognize a familiar voice from the actor who played Greer? He was the voice of Darth Vader the the Star Wars movies. Thought you’d like to know. 😉

Goony71

Your dad and I must be about the same age...our lists are very similar. LOL! I absolutely love this movie and your reaction was very entertaining. If I might suggest a few more you may like, check out "We Were Soldiers" (true story of the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major battle of the Viet Name War) starring Mel Gibson. A more obscure suggestion is "The Poseidon Adventure", starring Gene Hackman & Ernest Borgnine, it's about a cruise ship that capsizes due to a tidal wave on New Year's Eve and a group of about 10 passengers trying to climb their way "up" to the bottom of the ship in the hopes they might be rescued through the hull before it sinks. And in a more light-hearted vein, "Diggstown" stars James Woods Louis Gossett, Jr. and Oliver Platt in a film about a con man who sets up a scam involving a boxing match in which the bet is his partner (Louis Gossett) can knock out any 10 Diggstown men in 24 hours.

Bill Poulter

By the way two additional movies in the Jack Ryan series are Patriot Games and A Clear And Present Danger... both of these star your future ex-husband Harrison Ford as the Jack Ryan character..

Mike McLaughlin

To answer your question as to if the different Jack Ryan movies are different characters or different actors, its just different actors. Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger have Harrison Ford playing the same Jack Ryan character that Alec Baldwin played, as they are more like sequels to The Hunt for Red October, though Harrison Ford plays it a little bit gruffer and tougher lol The Sun of All Fears (Ben Affleck) is a reboot depicting a younger Jack Ryan set in the early 2000s trying to stop nuclear war between the US and Russia, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Chris Pine) is also a reboot but more of a origin story of the character updated to present day, which I didn’t care for lol and the Amazon prime series Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is another reboot taking place in present day, having Jack as a CIA financial analyst tracking terrorist money in the War on Terror, but I loved this series lol there are 2 seasons so far.

Gilbert Gonzalez

Better vote for it in the poll she has up on YouTube. It’s losing to Batman. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Catherine LW

If you were claustrophobic watching Red October, you will probably die if you watched "Das Boot" lol, but I think you would enjoy it and get a serious thrill! It is arguably the best submarine movie ever made.

Andrew Zayatz

There's probably Russian and/or Chinese subs cruising off the North American coast at any given time. As our subs patrol their coasts. Especially with Cuba being in the news again. It's all part of the game: get close without being detected. That's one of the missions of submariners.

ron young

"U-571" is a WW2 sub movie. Pretty cool. Dr. Ron Paul once said "the best deterrent to aggression is a nuclear submarine filled with missiles." I haven't seen this movie in 5 or 6 years. One of my favs. Never would have thought to watch it again till I watched your reaction on YouTube, so I downloaded the movie and watching it now.

ron young

Great movie and all. The day I heard Sean Connery passed last year was a sad day. One of our many actor’s in our lifetime.

HorrorFan87

I'd like to join others in casting a vote for you to watch "Das Boot" (German for "The Boat"). It's about a German U-boat during World War 2. You mentioned that you always thought of submarines as being small. Well, "Das Boot" takes place in a FAR smaller, diesel-powered submarine. Very claustrophobic! The entire movie is in German with English subtitles. There is a version with the audio dubbed into English, but do NOT watch that one. The dubbed version just cannot convey the same emotion as the original. I also recommend the director's cut, which is 3 hours 28 minutes long (and is available for streaming on Amazon0, rather than the theatrical release. For most movies I recommend the theatrical release for the first viewing, but "Das Boot" is very much an exception! Also, ask your dad whether he has seen it. If not, I highly recommend that he watch it, too!

Wally Hartshorn

We need to get her watching the Connery James Bond movies, lol.

JTP

I really am a sucker for anything Jack Ryan. I am not a big fan of the CIA at all but I always have a soft spot for a great spy thriller. Great reaction Cassie :D

MattN

former submariner here. Hard disagree. CT is very Hollywood. Red October is much more accurate, even at its age, to when I was in (02-10)

EmwunGarand

The scene where the national security advisor (Richard Jordan) is talking to the Russian ambassador and eating jelly beans is a nod to President Reagan, who loved jelly beans and always kept some on his desk.

Catherine LW

I toured that submarine when I was visiting Portland! It was so small, they had huge tins of food lining the floor so we were walking on them instead of the actual floor of the sub!

Catherine LW

He probably had several sources of inspiration but Tom Clancy had said in interviews the primary influence was the story of the mutiny that took place onboard the frigate Storozhevoy. The Smithsonian channel did a show about it a few years back and it's connection to The Hunt for Red October and Clancy. It's worth a watch.

Paul G

Hunt for Red October is a pretty good sub movie. But Crimson Tide is better. :)

RX2904

The movie was not a true story, but it was loosely based on a soviet sub that was lost in the 1960s. Tom Clancy was simply someone who enjoyed naval history and decided to write a book. Then-President Reagan got the book for Christmas and called it "un-put-downable", which made it very popular and resulted in the movie. Then, of course, Clancy wrote more books about the intrepid CIA analyst, Jack Ryan, and several of them became movies: - Patriot Games - Harrison Ford - Clear and Present Danger - Harrison Ford - The Sum of all Fears - Ben Affleck - Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Chris Pine The "pings" were just active sonar. One ship sends a lond sound through the water, and it reflects off of the other ship, so they can tell the exact distance. However, the ping can be heard by the target as well as the pinger, so they used it for communications. This is diffeerent from the "passive sonar" that Jonesie was doing. He would just listen to vibrations in the water and could discern different sounds, but he was not sending out any sounds himself.

Alan Kobb

The movie you were confusing this with that has Tom Cruise in it is Jack Reacher.

Andrew Hogan

I think you would enjoy the film First Knight

Ronny Boss

Same, man, same. I feel like my parents when I would ask who Clarke Gable and Fred Astaire were, lol.

Andrew Hogan

"Sean Connery . . . what else is he in?" hahahaha Wow, I feel old, (which is because I am).

OkieBoomer

Also the sub they used for "The Hunt for Red October" is actually docked in my home town of Portland , Oregon at the Oregon Museum of Science and industry it it quite small TBH.

Damien beatty

I totally agree with the comment from Laura above the best Submarine movie and one of the best war movies period is " Das Boot" it is far and away more accurate than any other sub movie ever it puts all these Hollywood Sub movies to shame! The acting is subperb " get it" and during filming of "Das Boot" The director had the crew live on the set for the duration of the shoot and shot the movie in sequence meaning that The first things shot were the beginning of the movie and the last were the last E.g. you see the crew growing their beards in real time and because the actors lived on the ship in near darkness for so long their skin became more pail in real life.. Also the sub in "Das Boot" was used by Steven Spielberg in " Raiders of the Lost Arc as they were both filming in France at the same time. Please do yourself this favor and enjoy " Das Boot" 1981 German directed by Wolfgang Peterson, You will never forget it.

Damien beatty

If you would like to see more Submarine films, I’d HIGHLY recommend ,,Das Boot“ from 1981/1982. it’s available as a directors cut film even though I’d recommend the original miniseries (but I’m not sure if there’s an English version of that). It’s a German production and was nominated for quite a few oscars - it’s easily one of the best things I’ve ever seen!

Laura

Yes, K-19 is a really good one. Even if down the road cause I know films like these are a lot. IF you can at some point add it, you really should.

David RedEagle

Im to drunk to go through all the other comments. So anyway if you can, watch anything Tom Clancy wise. Amazing man and wonderful writer. Oh and sorry for your loss. You know if you or your family ever needed more many of us would provide as much as we can financially. Just because you are really a cool cat Cassie.

David RedEagle

Fun fact: those weren't Hollywood extras in the background on Dallas, they were actual submariners. They brought them in, set Scott Glenn as the skipper and let them just do their thing, And Glenn knew how to command them, too; the Navy let him go aboard USS Salt Lake City to prepare for this role. Yes, that was the same ship as in Top Gun, and for the same reason. In the book it was USS John F Kennedy, but again, this was made by Paramount so they had to use Big E (although USS Ranger had a tendency to be the actual ship filmed). The single ping was Ramius acknowledging Ryan's message without tipping off anyone who wasn't supposed to know. This goes back to how he was going to meet up with the Americans, yes he wanted to meet them, but he wanted to do so on his terms. The Americans actually being able to track him was not something he anticipated. Props for recognizing the Chekhov's Gun DSRV before it showed up. Scuttling refers to deliberately sinking a ship to prevent its capture by enemy forces, the irony here being that Ramius is doing the exact opposite. You were wondering about Ramius' motives, and they do explain it a little at the end, basically taking a first strike weapon out of the hands of the warmongers, but in the book it all begins and ends with his wife. She died on the operating table because the surgeon who was supposed to be operating on her showed up drunk. Ramius couldn't do anything about it because he was the son of a Communist Party official, so he basically walked scott free. Ramius, who had doubts about the Soviet way of life extending all the way back to childhood, came to the last straw when it came time for her funeral. The Soviet way had cost him his wife, it had cost him justice for her death, and, since Soviet Russia is an athiest state, he felt he had been robbed even of the means to mourn her. SInce he couldn't find any one person to exact jujstice upon, he decided the state itself would pay. And when they presented him with the concept of a new more stealthy missile sub, his opportunity presented itself. And if you like reading books to learn more about what you see in movies, for this I'd suggest "Blind Man's Bluff" by Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew. I was actually trying to think of this one a while ago, so thanks for reminding me. Oh, if you want to see Harrison Ford on a submarine, K-19: The Widowmaker.

Texas Anla'Shok

The Hunt for Red October was based on a novel by Tom Clancy. He was a great military novelist and had a great attention to detail. It was not based on a true story. Jack Ryan is a character in a lot of his novels and has had several movies and even a amazon series (Jack Ryan). This unfortunately was the only Jack Ryan movie with Alec Baldwin. Others such as "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" star Harrison Ford as Ryan. "The Sum of All Fears" has Ben Affleck as Ryan, "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" has Chris Pine, and the Amazon series Jack Ryan has John Krasinski as the character. If you enjoyed The Hunt for Red October, I highly recommend Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.

SplinterTME

The Hunt for Red October, What About Bob, AND Black Hawk Down all in the same week. How'd I get this lucky? My birthday isn't for another month.

Jack the Narrator

So sorry for you loss, keeping you and yours in our thoughts.

Allen Bond

If you've only seen Alec Baldwin in 30 Rock, you need to see Beetlejuice then ahaha.

Matt

I have seen this movie at least 50 times or more and watching it with you made it feel like almost the first time. Seeing your suspense and edge of the seat weirdly transferred to me and I was anxious through the whole final half hour. Enjoyed so much!

EmwunGarand

Clancy's books were so detail specific about military technology, tactics and terminology, he had to have his drafts screened by the Pentagon before he could publish so they could avoid accidentally leaking classified information

Michael Hyland

A lot of times when I introduce this movie to people and we get to the scene at the end where Jack confronts the saboteur, their reaction is "Huh? Who's that?" In the beginning of the film, Captain Ramius is talking to the submarine political officer, Putin (ha), about spies on the ship. Political officers were a position within the Soviet military in charge of crew morale and dedication to Soviet ideology; in practice, they reported on commanding officers to their bosses to keep them in line. The Soviets also placed covert agents, either from the KGB (civilian intelligence agency) or the GRU (military intelligence agency), within the ranks as secret informants. So Ramius is joking-not-really-joking with Putin about how many such spies have been hidden on his boat disguised as ordinary sailors. After the political officer's "accident," Ramius asks both the ship's doctor, and a random crewman nearby, to witness his taking the second missile key into his possession. This crewman, introducing himself as "Cook's Assistant Loginov," is actually one of these GRU spies, which is probably why he's hanging around the captain's cabin at that moment instead of in the galley cooking for the crew. Loginov seems aware that Ramius is not following orders and sabotages the Caterpillar drive to make the Red October sonar-visible again, and when that doesn't work, stays aboard when the rest of the crew evacuates so that he can blow up the ship to keep it out of American hands. This was the first Jack Ryan novel, written by Tom Clancy, an insurance agent in Maryland. The technical details in the novel were so accurate that lots of people in the military assumed Clancy had somehow gotten a hold of classified materials, but in fact he just used research books and military journals which were available to the public. When then-President Reagan praised the novel at a press conference it became a bestseller. Clancy wrote or co-wrote 13 more Jack Ryan novels before passing away in 2013. While the books started out as being so plausible that readers didn't know if they were fact or fiction, the series quickly diverged from real world events and became increasingly over-the-top, with Ryan eventually becoming Vice President and then immediately President after a massive terrorist attacks blows up the President and all of Congress. A number of different authors have turned out new Jack Ryan novels since Clancy's death, and besides Alec Baldwin the character has been played by Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine and currently John Krasinski.

Patrick Flanagan

Yes i forgot they mentioned he was a former marine as well! Thanks for the lingo lesson, it felt like they were talking another language at some points, and i also can’t imagine the 1 character at a time messages, that could be easily messed up i feel like!

Cassie

It is on my short list! I’m trying to space out the war films but very anxious to see a perspective from the other side after watching so much from the American viewpoint. I’m also very excited to see any of these other Jack Ryan Movies? Are they all different characters? or just different actors with the same character?

Cassie

Thanks so much for posting that, that article was great, although i’m a little disappointed it’s not more true! It’s cool that Tom Clancy as a salesman came across it though and made his own version though!

Cassie

They switched over to English as the Political Officer (zampolit) was reading that quote and specifically on the word "Armageddon", because it's pronounced the same way in both Russian and English. Naval Jargon: Course 180 - Imagine a circle around the sub with 360 being due north and 180 being due south. That tells you which way the Captain is telling the navigator to steer. ELF - Extremely Low Frequency, this is the way submarines would get their messages 1 character at a time, which then had to be decoded and passed to the Captain to read clear text I forgot what some of your other questions were, but wanted to remind you that Jack Ryan is a Marine and a Naval Academy graduate. He's received extensive weapons training, much more than your average "analyst". ;-)

Sean Novack

Thank you so much for saying that. Sometimes I feel like i’m asking too many questions and being annoying so thank you!

Cassie

Haha i’m on it! i’m so curious to see if that was him with a russian accent or if he always talks in that way haha

Cassie

Was he bond or a villain?

Cassie

Thank you so much for that clarification haha i knew i had heard the name jack ryan before but actually have never seen any of the other ones (but want to now) So another question, are they all different characters or just different actors? Like is Ben Affleck also this same guy who writes books for the CIA and saved this Submarine ship in his past?

Cassie

thank you so much! Oh man I miss Band of Brothers, but just finishing up Winters book and wow so good!

Cassie

Thank you so much, it is my grandpa and he lived a long good life ❤️

Cassie

So glad you reacted to this! It's one of my favorite movies. Also Jack Ryan is a character for a series of fictional books by Tom Clancy. There have been several movies/shows that have been adapted from his books. Several actors have played Jack Ryan, like Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, John Krasinski, Chris Pine! Hope to see more awesome reactions! Still waiting on a potential viewing of Letters From Iwo Jima, fingers crossed! ;P Also sorry for your loss, hope everything is well. Take Care!

Logan Sandoval

Sorry to hear about the funeral :(. Enjoyed the video as always, and to answer your question you asked in your wrap-up about whether it was based on a true story, I think the best way to put it is that it was inspired by actual events, but neither of which involved a submarine. Here's one brief but pretty good article about them if you're genuinely interested. https://www.wearethemighty.com/popular/inspiration-behind-the-hunt-for-red-october/

Eric Denney

Wonderful reaction as usual. I love the way you don't understand what's going on and then you stay still long enough to let it tell you. So many reactors cant stay quiet and miss plot points talking over them. I'm sorry for your loss, do what needs to be done and join us when your ready. Family/friends first.

softshoes

Didn't realize everyone else has already explained lol, comments hadn't loaded for me

Raymond Goff V

Yep. The Jack Ryan series stars John Krasinksi and is very good. All nice and modern for you Cassie. Even has a love story in there.

Michael Hyland

Jack Ryan is a character in a lot of Tom Clancy novels which is what this movie is based on. There are numerous other movies based on Clancy's novels which feature Jack Ryan, as well as most recently a Amazon Prime series called Jack Ryan.

Raymond Goff V

I posted this on the YouTube channel after the Temple of Doom reaction posted. But now that I've seen you post that you've never seen Sean Connery, I must now INSIST, Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade be your next movie.

Michael Hyland

More Sean Connery suggestions for you: The Rock, Entrapment, or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (think you are into this series).

Mike Mallon

Now that you have the Sean Connery bug you'll have to go watch the classic James Bond movies!

Paul G

the movie is the first of five based on a popular series of novels written by Tom Clancy, known as the Jack Ryan series. The main character is played in later movies by Harrison Ford (2 and 3), then Ben Afflek, then Chris Pine. It also spun off a 2 season TV series. If you like Sean Connery, his extensive acting career featured him in numerous movies, notably several of the James Bond series. Great reaction video...very enjoyable to watch.

Mike Mallon

The movie is based on the novel by Tom Clancy who wrote a bunch of other stories centered around the Jack Ryan character. The original novel is loosely inspired by a real event involving a mutiny on a Soviet navy ship but the real story is very different from the book & movie. There are several other movies based on the Jack Ryan stories but Alec Baldwin didn't return as Ryan. The character was recast first by Harrison Ford for two movies, then Ben Affleck and Chris Pine in one movie each. Most recently John Krasinski has played him on an Amazon Prime TV series. The other movies are Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger (Harrison Ford), The Sum of all Fears (Affleck), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (Pine) and the show is called Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (Krasinski). The two Ford movies are decent, the rest of the series is hit or miss. The Hunt for Red October is unquestionably the best of the lot.

Paul G

One could argue that there are other reaction channels as good as PIB, but, wow, they don't have nearly as good a selection of movies that they have reacted to. I am literally crying my way through Band Of Brothers again, for at least the third time.

Uncle Phoenix

Very sorry for your loss. Please take care.

Baldielox

Pulled out the laserdisc to watch along with this one.

MotoDork

I'm so happy to see this, but I'm really sorry to hear about the funeral as well. I hope you are doing well, considering the circumstances.

Armchair Rizzard

I’m sorry to hear about the funeral. Prayers for you and your family, Cassie. 🙏🏼
