Arrival (2016) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Here is the reaction to Arrival, which was recorded during a live watch-along. It was so much fun to watch a long with everyone but with it being my first time there were definitely a few technical difficulties haha. The reaction starts about ~4 minutes into the video and I didn't record an intro/outro. Don't worry though, I'll be more prepared next time!

Other than the technical issues (such as the loud echo I heard whenever I spoke XD) the movies was fantastic! I didn't catch on as earlier as a lot of you probably did, but I did end figuring out the twist.

*I ended up recording an intro/outro to this one. It'll be posted on the YouTube vid coming tomorrow.

Direct link in case the above player doesn't work.

Find your own copy to watch a long with.

Could she win the lottery? For those who click on read replies here's some fun stuff, With her new perception of time could she win the lottery? Look at it this way, she can know things that she has known and will know in the future, but if something didn't happen to her she wouldn't know of it for example a precious vase falls and breaks inside her neighbor's house. She wouldn't know of it. No, she could not intentionally win the lottery. Could she look in the future and read the newspaper for the lottery numbers, yes. But she can't buy the lottery ticket. Because all moments in time coexists and overlap. While she can see the lottery winning numbers but at the same time she can also see that she didn't buy the ticket in her past. Crazy, yes? It's not time travel. On a deeper level there is the question of free will. What does this mean about free will if the past present and future coexist at the same time? Does it mean in any way that things are predetermined and therefore there is no free will?

I rewatch the classics now and then. Think on this point... the daughter was asking about the terminology when both sides win. She gives an answer but it wasn't "sciency" enough. "If you want a more science term ask your father" she said sternly. And then from that dreamlike state we come to the immediacy of present day and the guy talking says "non-zero-sum game." And then she goes back to the dreamlike state to answer the daughter's question, you can also see realization on her face. Let's explain - she just identified the father, without realizing it. She also gave an answer to a question from the future with an answer from the past, without realizing it. What dawned on her was that she found the answer from the present time but she did not know when in time the question was being asked not knowing that it was a question from her child who had not been born yet. And this is what it means to be able to see all of their time, to be aware of the past present and future simultaneously. It is not time travel per se... it is more of a realization that all of time can coexist on top of each other overlapping. "Once you learn their language the perception of time changes for you." This is also the weapon and it had been given as their language. When the bomb was counting down to explosion, there was no concern because they knew exactly when it would go off. They could continue teaching up to the last second before saving the two humans. They could perceive all moments in time and that there were still many moments left before the bomb would explode, there was no risk of running out of time. Each moment of time is like a card laid out on the table and you can go to any card in any order, and so they gave the bulk of the information on the last card.

Just watched - Confused Cassie is still very special as long as there is a love story somehow intertwined in there. This WAS special. Rewatched - 10/2/23 Louise had the courage to fully accept the gift, even 'knowing' that doing so, would be to 'know'. And yes Cassie, Amy Adams IS amazing.

Everyone recommending Master and Commander are correct. It is great cinema. A movie I think you will love if you have not seen it: The Adjustment Bureau. It's great. Emily Blunt is fabulous in it. I know from your reactions that you're a sucker for a love story!

Thank you so much, I’m going to do a poll for the next live stream, after hearing so much love for Master and Commander, i’m hoping it will win!

Cassie

Yes! I watched the second one last week, it will be up on Patreon in the next day or two!! I’m SO excited to watch the 3rd!

Cassie

Thank you so much for these, the only one I’ve seen is Signs (so many nightmares) haha and a few scenes of Fight Club when I was young and had to turn it off! can’t wait to check the other ones out, i’m anxious to do another live stream soon

Cassie

What a great review, I think you said it all perfectly. I have thought about this movie lots since seeing it, and wondered the same question and I’m with you, “better to have loved and lost……”. I think they did a good job of showing pretty accurately how the world would react if something like that did happen

Cassie

I have to join Catherine and Christopher in highly recommending Master and Commander, for a live stream -- or any other purpose at all. It is a meticulously produced and lovingly presented depiction of an amazing time in the history of the world. It's too deep for some people to really get, particularly those conditioned against believing that some of the things shown could be possible, but after seeing Cassie's reaction to Band of Brothers (among others) I believe this movie is really a must see. One caveat. There is one thing this movie wouldn't have been a good choice for -- an Independence Day movie. Give or take a few years and the characters could have easily been fighting against Americans. But, they would've understood them!

Shaun Stuart

I agree with all of this, especially Signs and Master and Commander.

Arrival is an interesting film, one of the core themes - about yet again time travel - requires a bit of external research. Most of the movie going public are familiar with the concept of multiple timelines, this is because its the most messy and easy theory to apply to films, as it basically allows a writer/director to do whatever they want with no penalty or awkward implications. Arrival is not about multiple timelines - its about the philosophical perspective of time. Essentially the movie structures itself around the the ideas of different theories regarding just how we as humans perceive time itself. One of these is known as the Growing Block view, and another known as the Eternalist View. The Growing Block simply is how most people generally see time - what it means is that our 'block' of the present is continually moving forward. The Past exists and is set and established it cannot be changed - the future does not exist. The Eternalist view considers the concept that the Past, Present and Future all already exist simultaneously. This is obviously something difficult for us to easily wrap our head around. However this is what they attempt in Arrival. The Aliens have seemingly already achieved the ability to see reality via the Eternalist view, they are able to see events in the future and past, its not made clear why they must rely on humans, but evidently it was necessary for them to come here and engage with humans. In the film Louise Banks eventually opens her mind to this possibility and she begins to become aware of the Eternalist view of time, this is how she is able to see things in both the past present and future simultaneously. The movie is really about humans ability to perceive time, and it starts you thinking about interesting questions about how we interpret time, how do we know when now is now, and so on so on.... This is my extremely thin explanation to try and just get the rough idea of the concept across. I recommend either reading - or looking up books and lectures by Physicist Sean M. Carroll - for starters hes actually qualified to talk about this stuff unlike me, and second does a far better job of explaining it than me! - there is also one other view of time known as presentism, this essentially asks does only the present exist? so only the moment we are in now is real and everything before or after does not exist in a real sense, this is the opposite of eternalism.

I really love this movie and I'm so glad you decided to watch it. I think for me the movie asks us indirectly if we would choose the future, with all its love and agony, if we knew the outcome. Having lost family members early in life, I would honestly say without a doubt I would go through the grief and sorrow once again just for the chance of be with my loved ones once more. Which, to me, means the movie is about love. The film also delivers a sub message of unity and the power of communication, yet also the destructive power of miscommunication and misinterpretation. The core fundamentals of why we empathize is through learning about others and ourselves.

Sindre Kristiansen

Thanks. That's good to hear. Edit: Really good reaction. I don't blame you at all for not picking up on the "rogue soldiers" moment. The first time I saw this, I didn't really know what was going on either. It was only in the second viewing, because I already knew that it was going to happen, that I picked up on the scant set-up scenes showing those soldiers being indoctrinated by the talk-show host. I kind of wish the movie had set up this plot-point more clearly. That way the audience could fully appreciate the drama and tension of the scene without being distracted by, "wait, what's going on?"

WastedPo

There were plenty of issues, but I was able to watch the first 4 minutes! Next time it'll be much smoother :D

Cassie

I wasn't able to participate in this event. Since Cassie's on-screen image doesn't appear until 4 minutes in (with the movie already in progress) PLEASE tell me that Cassie didn't actually miss the first 4 minutes of the movie.

WastedPo

Awww. I want to chat with Popcorn.
