Top Gun (1986) - Full Reaction

Comments

This is in my top 10, I've seen it over 100x not kidding. It has one of the best soundtracks of all-time. I sang you've lost that loving feeling to my then crush on the boardwalk in VA Beach, she decided to marry me. She passed away far too young, I now watch it to remember our love we shared.

JohnnyUtah

I don't remember how young I was when I first saw this but I still remember my poor dad trying to console my sobs when Goose died. He's so wonderful and the relationship he and Maverick have is just so pure and fun. Love this film and loved watching it with you. I haven't seen the sequel yet so I decided to rewatch this before I moved on to that one, hopefully tomorrow! Thank you!

China Andronicus

This is the one that got me to find you. It's also the first movie reaction I ever watched on youtube. I'm now subscribed to a bunch of channels (Addie, Natalie Gold, VKunia, Nerdy Nightly, funnylilgalreacts, etc), but you will always be my first ;-)

Ian from wine country

I didn't notice it, even though I have seen this movie multiple times, until Cassie mentioned it. But yes, everyone is constantly sweating :)

Dirk Rheeder

He was amazing in Tropic Thunder

I have been SEARCHING for someone who watched this movie. What a terrific reaction. It was nice to see you so receptive to the love story. I love how you brought up Tom Cruise's smile specifically. Because after the accident, you don't see his smile again until the very end of the movie and it's a really important part of the emotional transference of the actor. Tom Cruise's smile is the reason he is a movie star. It conveys so much emotion. It feels like you fell in love with Maverick watching this movie, or at least, fell in love with the love story of this movie. Top Gun isn't just an action movie. It's a chick flick and a bro flick. Your reaction to Goose was beautiful. Because this movie is also about grief and recovery. I think this was one of the first film's I ever saw that made me understand what it was to lose a loved one. One of my best friend's died last year and it felt like a Goose to me. Can't wait for you to see the sequel where Tom Cruise actually flies the jets this time!

Jason Dolan

I have to say I was surprised, Cassie, that you didn't recognize the actor playing "Merlin" as Tim Robbins, otherwise known as Andy Dufresne in "The Shawshank Redemption". Also, another little bit of trivia regarding all of those "tongue" shots between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis --- it was later revealed that Kelly McGillis is a lesbian....hmmmm, maybe a bit awkward???

Bill Poulter

The scene with the world war 2 warbird plane is actually Tom Cruise's own plane. N51EW

Gregory Martin

I really enjoyed the reaction and I think Cassie really enjoyed the bar scene, it was a mini-romantic comedy inside an action drama:)

Mark M

My dad worked with the crew who engineered the MiGs. According to him, he said he would often times run into the cast. Val Kilmer (Ice Man) was very generous about spending his time in between sets to chat with the engineers whereas Tom Cruise stayed in his trailer most of time.

gianni_hello

spoiler...no Meg Ryan or Kelly McGillis in the sequel AFAIK. 'Mrs. Goose' is played by another actress, No mention of Charlie, however Jennifer Connelly stars as Penny Benjamin, his current love interest, also known as 'the admiral's daughter' in the original.

Mike Mallon

excellent reaction video to my all time favorite film. now if they would just release the sequel. I am quite interested to see how you react to the continuation of the storyline and characters. Spoiler alert...Goose and Rooster (Miles Teller) have a storyline connection.

Mike Mallon

magnolia would be my choice off the list...underrated movie

michael anderson

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I love how you said he puts so much into the movies he makes, that makes me like him more. Admittedly I think I was skewed by the Oprah couch and scientology stuff but i guess I just need to watch more of his movies!! The only ones i’ve seen from your list are Edge of Tomorrow and Rainman. I’m actually watching Rhe Last Samurai this week and creaky excited, i’ve had a lot of reccs for it!!

Cassie

Ok I can’t believe i didn’t recognize him either because he basically looks the exact same haha! It really was the Definition of a fun popcorn movie ha ha

Cassie

I know! That was the whole reason I wanted to watch this but I thought it was coming out July dang it! it looks really good, I wonder if Meg Ryan will be in it, it doesn’t look like him and Charlie work out :(

Cassie

Hey Cassie! Just joined your Patreon today. You've had too many movies I enjoy lately to put it off any longer. Top Gun kinda sealed it for me though. I think this was the 1st R-rated movie I saw as a kid in the theater with my dad. He wanted to join the Air Force when he was younger to be a pilot but was rejected for being color blind. He tried to be a mechanic instead but being color blind prevented him from being able to even touch the aircraft (not sure if this is still the case today with the new glasses and such). Goose died from either a broken neck or other severe head trauma from his impact with the canopy. Since he was in a flat spin the canopy would still be above the cockpit instead of behind them with normal propulsion. And to your comment about whether the other (enemy) jets being "better", it really depends on the pilot. They were being trained to combat the Soviet MiG's which are a lighter, faster, more agile jet in dogfighting than the F-14 being used by the Navy. But the advantages of the F-14 (Tomcat) is they have a larger payload (carrying capacity) for extra fuel for longer trips and increased # of missiles. Plus it can also be used to bomb targets on the ground whereas the fighter jets they were going up against focused primarily on air-to-air combat.

Obsolyeet

I’d say an entire generation was inspired by this movie 😆 There is a delay to the seat firing after the canopy separates from the aircraft, but there was no more delays added in recent upgrades to my knowledge. Flat spins are very unique, so adding the jettison canopy procedure was probably sufficient enough. CW is an awesome Youtuber. Ward Carrol is also a really good one! He is a former F-14 RIO 😁 The newer models with the General Electric engines prevents a lot of the compressor stall issues experienced with the Pratt and Whitney engines, but unfortunately a fully developed flat spin is still unrecoverable in an F-14.

Josh Phillips

I’ve been a fan of his since this movie, and one of the reasons is something you mentioned, in that he is completely committed to making the best film he can, and risks his own life, doing his own stunts. The only thing I’d argue is a few of the movies mentioned. I never liked Vanilla Sky, Magnolia and Rock Of Ages is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in theaters, I almost walked out after 10 minutes which is something I never do. I’d add Cocktail, Far and Away, Knight and Day and the entire catalogue of Mission Impossible films are pretty good.

Andrew Hogan

As an aviation fan myself, a quick question. When they updated the Tomcat to the B and D, weren’t they able to recover from a flat spin, since they had updated the avionics, and if it had an experienced pilot. I thought the biggest issue for the Tomcats being notorious for these problems was due to the underpowered engines in the A.

Andrew Hogan

Don't forget his little role in Austin Powers 3. He was hillarious!

Ron

While Cruise was a fast rising star in the early 80s, it was TOP GUN that made him a household name. If I were ever able to sit down and chat with a celebrity for a day, it would be with Tom Cruise. I know a lot of people love to crap on him because of the whole scientology thing, but he's never tried to push his beliefs unto others, he just loves to make movies and it shows. He puts himself 110% into every movie he makes and he always acknowledges and appreciates his fans. Being a self-professed Cruise stan, it seems only logical that I make a list of recommendations for future movie viewing featuring muh boy TC. RISKY BUISNESS (1983) THE COLOR OF MONEY (1987) RAIN MAN (1988) BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY (1989) DAYS OF THUNDER (1990) A FEW GOOD MEN (1992) THE FIRM (1993) MAGNOLIA (1999) VANILLA SKY (2001) MINORITY REPORT (2002) THE LAST SAMURAI (2003) COLLATERAL (2004) VALKYRIE (2008) ROCK OF AGES (2012) JACK REACHER (2012) OBLIVION (2013) EDGE OF TOMORROW (2014) The two most recent MISSION IMPOSSIBLE films ROUGE NATION (2015) and FALLOUT (2018) he also has a hilarious uncredited role in the 2008 comedy TROPIC THUNDER, but I recommend holding off on watching that movie until you've got some more film viewings under your belt, since it's a very accurate satire on Hollywood and filmmaking in general. The much anticipated sequel to TOP GUN is set to hit theaters this Thanksgiving. It was originally supposed to come out a year ago but got postponed like countless other movies due to Covid.

Cassie! I'm surprised that you missed that the actor who played Commander Tom 'Stinger' Jardian (the bald officer out in the fleet) is the man who played Vice-Principal Gerald Strickland in the Back to the Future series. I loved your reaction because you started out skeptical and ended up looking forward to the sequel.

Kevin

Great Info! I am an aviation geek also hahahahah and that movie is an icon for most of the aviation community and inspired lots of people, you can check CW Lemoine channel he is a fighter pilot and have really good insights about becoming a military pilot and lots of interviews of lots of pilots who also were inspired by top gun!

salim alvarez

Josh, correct me if I'm wrong but I've also heard that there was an issue when the REO pulls the eject cable first. Originally when the REO ejects the canopy is shot off and then the REO's seat fires first and then the pilot. As you mentioned, the canopy doesn't have time to get out of the way before the REO's seat fires. I've heard that they added delay to the seats firing so that the canopy has more time to move out if the way.

Kevin

what a great story!!

Cassie

It’s never mentioned by name, but the ship they fly off of is the Enterprise. You tend to see her in Paramount’s films that need a carrier for some reason. *cough * Star Trek*cough * Also, the ship Viper says he flew off along with Maverick’s dad, the Oriskany, is now a diving reef off the coast of Florida.

Texas Anla'Shok

yes, you are so right ha

Cassie

Heck Yeah. Can’t wait to watch your reaction and all. Tom Cruise is has a new movie Top Gun: Maverick that is the coming out in theaters and hopefully on demand on November 19th then 45 days after the release date it’ll be on Paramount+. It’s kept get pushed back since 2018-19.

Great info Josh, thanks so much. Three of us saw this in the theater, one (Denny) said coming out "that's what I want to do. And by golly if he didn't. Flight school trained on multiple aircraft but "landed" as a Navy chopper pilot. He used to comment about stormy carrier landings etc. I would be curious to know how many pilots were inspired by this movie.

I think you can start to look for a new editor. Seems like you´re rushing towards your 1000 patreon goal. Can´t imagine this slowing down the progress:-D

So funny watching this... I was a Navy recruit at Recruit Training Center in San Diego Ca. in July of 1985, while they were filming a part of this. We were allowed to go to the Exchange one day, at the Naval Training Center and I remember that as I was walking inside, all I saw was a white uniform with gold on it walking toward me. I saluted the Officer, who then looked up at me and said, "You don't have to salute me". Then I recognized it was Tom Cruise.. He was smiling at me, while I was calling myself a giant freaking idiot... Pretty great memory.! Excellent reaction, Cassie.!!

Baldielox

With that kind of spin they weren't able to eject properly so when goose ejected, he hit his head on the cockpit shield when he ejected.

David Martin

This movie is what got me into aviation! Not sure I’d be a pilot today if I didn’t see it lol. Couple things about the movie you might find interesting… the combat scenes were very loosely based on the 1981 Gulf of Sidra Incident where a pair of Libyan aircraft fired upon a pair of American aircraft and were subsequently shot down. Goose is what’s known as a Radio Intercept Officer (RIO). He sits behind the pilot and works the radar and puts bombs on target if it’s a multi role strike aircraft. The spin that killed Goose is very real for the aircraft they were flying (F-14 Tomcat). Basically when airflow is interrupted through the air intake (in this case by means of Iceman’s jetwash), it can cause a compressor stall, and it’ll result in a flame out. The engines are far enough apart off centerline in the F-14 that the good engine will cause the aircraft to violently yaw into the dead engine and if the pilot doesn’t recognize this immediately and correct for it, it can develop into a flat spin, which is unrecoverable in an F-14. Goose hitting the canopy is also real. It actually happened to an F-14 RIO in real life. The biggest reason is because the airflow over the canopy is disrupted in a flat spin and it can’t separate in time before the ejection seats fire off. F-14 procedures for a flat spin ejection requires the canopy to be manually jettisoned before initiating the ejection sequence. So unfortunately Goose made a huge mistake. This all makes the F-14 seem like a horrible aircraft, but that’s really not the case lol. If it was flown by the book, it was one of the greatest fighter jets to ever take to the sky. This movie made it a legend in the aviation community. Sadly it saw it’s final deployment in 2006 and was retired the following year. One of the F-14s used in the movie is actually on display at the USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi, TX if you are ever in that area 😁 Sorry for the long-winded comment haha. Hope this helps answer some of your questions. I’m a big aviation nerd 😂

Josh Phillips

I think you may be confusing Rick Rossovich being in "What's up Doc?" with him being in "Roxanne".

Allen Bond

I am curious to see if she felt this movie was a little "gay". :) Certainly a case for it with "Playing with the boys" as a song and that volleyball scene is certainly putting out those vibes. After watching this, I think it is MANDATORY to watch Hot Shots. Bit of trivia: The person who is Cougar's co-pilot is Tim Robbins.
