Same, it seems to play slightly too fast so I have to constantly resync. Will try the download version. I tried multiple sources of the actual movie, so I think it is on this youtube video's end.

David

I ran into sync issues with this video. At least with the youtube version embedded in the post. The download version might be better, idk.

Hi Cassie, I get what mean about parts being “cartoonish” I thought of Disneys 7 dwarfs a few times. You mentioned that you wanted to see Gimli, but his father, Gloin is the dwarf with the long red hair and beard in this trilogy. I also realized something else. When the first dwarf Dwalin knocked on Bilbo’s door, I recognized the voice and Scottish accent and it is Graham McTavish who played Dougal on Outlander. Until next time…🍿

@Aaron: Even if it's a while, I can only fully support your statement. Like you I'm also a Middle-earth nerd, have read everything plus a whole bunch of supplements from the Roleplaying Game which often are very accurate. So I can only emphasize that the movies are very well made and better than 95% of the other movies of their release year. The storyline has its weaknesses and there was too much added, but finally it's 'Hollywood', so what. 😄

Chris Lüders

If by chance, Aragorn was in Rivendell, he wouldn't be a child. Remember he was 87 in the LOTR Trilogy. This Trilogy takes place 60 prior. :)

Chris Reise

Remember the Hobbit was written to be a children's tale, while LoTR was written for adults. I agree that they added stuff they didn't need and it was too long but the Necromancer storyline was very much central to the story in that it explained why Gandalf wasn't there for most of it. But to each heir own I suppose, enjoy!

Gary Quick

The Hobbit movies were done poorly because PJ wanted to make it a trilogy, instead of a better idea of a one or two movie format. They added too much unnecessary junk not in the book, like the stupid love triangle between Legolas, Kili, and Tauriel, the very unnecessary Necromancer storyline, the terrible character of Alfrid. I actually made fan edits of the three movies and by keeping the plot centered on Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf, and removing said unnecessary extra junk, the three movies were actually brilliantly made.

Steve Smith

Well said! I agree with this very much. I don't try to compare them to LOTR, because really, nothing compares, but really because I think even the makers of these movies, like you mentioned, admit that they embellished to lengthen the story. It's still a great story and, even though it has some inconsistencies with the lore of it all and the over reliance on CGI wasn't great (not horrible though), it's a very well done trilogy and imbues much of the same emotions I had during LOTR. Overall great and I'm glad you watched them Cassie!

Personally I think the Hobbit films are pretty good for what they are. Are they on the level as The LOTR trilogy no, but they do give us more of Middle-Earth. And the more of Middle-Earth and LOTR content we can get the better. If you watch some of the behind the scenes of The Hobbit. Peter Jackson and some others explain, yes they know The Hobbit was only one book. They were going by what the book was but also wanted to throw some more into the story in the films also. Because he gives us more of the adventures that were going on besides what Bilbo and the dwarfs were doing. Like what Gandalf was doing when he wasn't with the company and going off to find the necromancer/Sauron, The Witch-king and the rest of the Nazgul. So that's why the films were made into three films. Some don't like them and some do. Yes the over use of CGI is what brings these films down a bit but overall the more of Middle-Earth we get the better.

After we watch your reaction we rewatched all of The Hobbit movies again in the last month

Yeah there were some bad little offshoots from the plot with side characters like Legolas, the Kili/Tauriel thing, etc. Again, that's not unique to these, the LOTR movies had some wasted/poorly done moments (completely blowing through how Faramir/Eowyn got together). Others have already talked about why the writing style was different in the Hobbit. And the CGI complaint is perfectly reasonable. I definitely prefer the costume/make-up from the LOTR. But Hollywood changed a lot in the 10+ years between franchises and Hollywood does CGI now. Nothing to do about that. Adapt with the times. You don't have to shout your displeasure from the rooftops like so many people do every time there's a problem with your preferred medium of entertainment.

Aaron

For me it’s not about its “faithful to the book”. The writing, CGI, and some plot lines were substandard. But I don’t hate it. Still never saw the entire 3rd episode as I fell asleep. Twice.

Catherine LW

These movies get a bad rap by people who take themselves too seriously. Are they 100% faithful to the book? No. Neither was LOTR. I read all the books. And I mean ALL the books. Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc. If a super fan like me can get over the inaccuracies and just enjoy the little nods to other parts of Tolkien's Legendarium for what they are, you can too.

Aaron

The Lord of the Rings - 3 books = 3 movies. Perfect. The Hobbit - 1 book = 3 moves. Bloated Hollywood cash grab.

OkieBoomer

It is important to remember that the Hobbit is not Lord of the Rings, the story is not quite as grand, and not quite as epic. Its less than Lord of the Rings by a mile, but they are good and charming in their own way. Its a nice back story, but I would not necessarily recommend the extended cuts for these movies like I did for Lord of the Rings. I enjoy them, because I am a nerd, but they are certainly not for everyone.

LordGrailKnight

I use the maple films fan edit myself.

The project was probably doomed when del Toro gave up on it. Peter Jackson should be ashamed of himself for what he did with it. Every one of his bad screenwriting tendencies showed up in his Hobbit movies. They are disgraceful. Tolkien would have liked LotR; he would have puked at this dreck.

Dan L.

Yeah, The Hobbit movies are really divisive. I heard Peter Jackson basically came in and salvaged the movies, he wasn't part of pre-production and planning like with LotR. I personally find The Hobbit trilogy extremely drawn out and poorly paced, I can hardly keep myself awake and need to watch them in smaller pieces.

Michael Larsen

While i don't hate The Hobbit movies like others do i found a marvelous fan edit that is called The Anti Cringe Cut. It improved the movies quite a bit. It took out all the cartoonish dwarf stuff, plus people and additions that don't belong in the movie. No more cringe and it tightens up the story really nice. Besides watching these reactions with you, the fan edit is the way i'll watch the movies from now on. Can't wait for the next movie reaction. :-)
