Memorial Day

I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Day and was able to remember those who fought for our freedoms. I have always respected and observed this day, but this year was different as I have truly learned so much more recently of what war was really like for our veterans, for all they and their families had to endure so we can enjoy our freedoms.

My family and I went to a ceremony at our local cemetery this morning, As the band was playing the songs of the different branches of armed forces and this time I knew the difference and the names, and the veterans and their families stood up, it felt Dalike my heart would swell from my chest for my thankfulness and also sorrow for those who have passed serving. Each one had a story and a life.

I remember today those who lost their lives in service and thank them deeply for their honorable sacrifice.

Found your reactions on YouTube to Saving Private Ryan and, my favorite series ever, Band of Brothers. Your reactions were true, emotional and I felt like I was watching them all over again for the first time. Now coming to your page here and seeing your post for Memorial Day has confirmed how genuine you are. As a service member myself, we truly appreciate the support from you and your family during these types of ceremonies!

My Memorial Day list: Cpl Jennifer Marie Parcell, Cpl Jason Dunham, Cpl Jonathan Yale, and LCpl Jordan Haerter. I will tell their stories and show their YouTube videos every Memorial Day to keep their memory intact. Keep up the good work Cassie. Make sure to take a break and enjoy some silly comedies and romance movies.

I watched The Great Escape. A little more light-hearted (mostly) than your typical war epic. Also watched American Sniper afterwards for the first time. A great film from a post 9/11 war. It really focused on the PTSD that affects many soldiers and the horrifying choices they sometimes have to make.

Hope you and your family had a good Memorial Day weekend as well! Spent the day with my family and we watched 30 Seconds Over Tokyo and Midway. Finished off the night reading the book, Baa Baa Black Sheep. Listening and learning about the stories is the best way I know on how to honor those who have given it all. Thank you for doing that with us!

Yeah, they also reused some footage from Tora! Tora! Tora!. Not sure if they had a smaller budget for Midway. As they didn't have CGI back then they had to do what they could. They said they used stock footage to add a sense of realism. As for the kamikaze strike, my take on that was that the plane was hit and was going down one way or the other, so the pilot aimed for the ship. As you point out they didn't start doing the actual and intentional practice of kamikaze tactics, using perfectly good aircraft with hastily trained pilots, until later on in the war when they were getting desperate. They were hoping we'd feel it was too heavy a price to attack their home isles and halt our advance. Incidentally, that shot of the B-17 landing on one wheel was not stock footage. The owner of the plane pulled off that stunt for the film. Check out the History Buffs channel on YouTube or here on Patreon. They do an excellent job reviewing historical films, and some quasi-historical ones such as Saving Private Ryan.

Armed forces medleys are always enjoyable. Each of the branches' songs are so distinct and I think they match their respective services perfectly, from the confident march of the Army song, the boldness of the Marine hymn, the energy and, shall we say, cockiness of the Ari Force song, the rolling tune of the Navy song, and the courage and humility of the oft-overlooked Coast Guard.

Personally I prefer the newer Midway. The 1975 one is ok, but I didn't really care for the fictional characters, the Japanese speaking English or the use of stock footage. I know a lot found the use of CGI in the new one off-putting, but I found the stock footage just as off-putting, especially since most of it came from later in the war. An especially egregious example is the clip of a kamikaze ramming a carrier. One, that didn't come until much later in the war. Two, that's an Essex-class carrier, which wouldn't enter service for another six months at this point.

Thank you Cassie for that heartfelt message. It warms my heart to see people still going to cemeteries to pay their respects to our fallen heroes. You didn't have to and did it anyway. You will always have my respect. - Sgt Campion, Neil USMC

a) she is adorable! Even the heart-shaped swelling on her face! b) The idea to respect the sacrifice of those women and men who paid the ultimate price is outstanding and a great sign for the great qualities the US people can have. c) Would also be a great moment to teach the next generation about their families past. I remember when I was like 8 and my grandfather brought me to the graveyards showing me the military and civilian deaths and their history of our own family. d) I don't remember which war autobiography (I think it was one from WWI) it was where the author underlined, that on both sides were uncounted young men. Men with the same dreams, desires, talents, the same hopes to built a family, the same loving parents, the same young girlfriends, children and wifes. They write the same letters home, have the same education, same disinterest for the political powers that forced them there. The only difference is the colour of their uniform.

I just watched your full reaction to 'Saving Private Ryan' last night. Well, done overall.... except for: General Marshall finishes reading the Bixby Letter: "Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln." Cassie: "Is that from World War One?" Me: "Oh, dear." ☺ Just teasing you. I'm sure you have learned a lot from watching movies like this. Maybe you could watch some classic historical WWII movies sometime such as Patton, A Bridge Too Far, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and Midway (the original one)? Thanks for sharing your reactions and feelings and your tribute to our fallen vets.

Very thoughtful Cassie! I'm in San Diego and we have a statue and a plaza dedicated to Sgt. Basilone here.

That's was a very kind gesture, Cassie. Thank you for showing you care.
