Starman (1984) - Full Reaction

Comments

New Jersey still has gas station attendants. In fact, it's against the law to pump your own gas in NJ.

Jerry C

Good movie and good reaction. Thanks.

Clay F

I am late to comment but, just in case, there has been a sequel to the movie as a television series (22 episodes). Starman comes back to Earth to reunite with his son and search for Jenny.

Late to the party, but wanted to give my thoughts on something, couldn't find any behind-the-scenes reason why Starman was dying, but it might be one of two theories I have. 1) since he came to earth just to observe how far along we've come he probably didn't need to have a body that would last longer then needed. 2) Sherman mentions that hair does have some DNA that could make it possible to clone a body, but hair wouldn't be as good as say a blood sample perhaps because of this regardless of how advanced the aliens are cloning a body from hair wouldn't last that long.

Hi Cassie - do you know how much I love this movie? I upgraded my patron level JUST to watch this reaction. I saw this film when it was first released on VHS back in about 1985 and it has never left me. I even quote it to my wife on occasion (she is okay with how weird I am about movie quotes).... if we're watching a show where someone has been snatched I say they were "kid-nap-ed", and if someone thinks they're in danger when they're not I'll throw out "I mean you no harm, Jenny Hay-den". A classic in every sense. And Charles Martin Smith (who plays the SETI investigator that lets them go in the end) has a Canadian connection - he played Tyler (who represents Canadian author Farley Mowat) in the movie "Never Cry Wolf" (1983). One you'd never watch for the channel because it is so niche, but a very good movie in it's own right.

So glad you watched this underappreciated gem! I would recommend these similar movies: Short Circuit and Flight of the Navigator, both charming feel-good movies (remember when films were charming?)

There was a 1 season tv series in the 80s staring Robert Hays that was about this.

Gideon James

This was a huge missed opportunity for a sequel. I wanted to see a part 2 where the alien baby grows up.

Quote of the day... "holy cow... those balls are powerful'

Since 2018 Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen have been discussing the possibility of a sequel, but so far it has been nixxed. A remake is currently in the works. The movie DID, however spawn a short lived sequel tv series. (With a different cast). Amazing to know that the film and the tv series was produced by Michael Douglas.

Chris Reise

Cassie you didn’t recognize Karen Allen? She played Marion in Indiana Jones and the last crusade. And yes that is Jeff bridges. He was just very young in this. Can’t forget this movie is 37 years old. These actors were all young once lol So was I hahaha 🤣🤣🤣

Oregon is only full service as well

The first time I saw this movie at a young age when it released on DVD, I enjoyed it but wasn't swept up by the romance aspect. But time and experience of love & loss gave me a whole newfound appreciation and adoration for the truly beautiful sci-fi love story that it know brings tears to my eyes. Fun Fact: Jeff Bridges was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in this. John Carpenter, the director of STARMAN, is generally known for making horror films and dystopic thrillers such as HALLOWEEN, THE THING, THEY LIVE and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. This film was a terrific departure for him and showcased his versatility with genre. In 1986, a TV series was made that served as a sequel to the movie, where the Starman returned to earth and reunites with Jenny and their son. It ran for one season. It stars Robert Hays, who played Ted Stryker in AIRPLANE. Speaking of AIRPLANE, that romantic scene on the beach that Starman was watching in the hotel room was from FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, that same scene was parodied in AIRPLANE when Ted & Elaine kiss on the beach with all the seaweed splashing on them.

I saw this on it release and was overwhelmed by Jeff Bridges performance. This was so much fun watching with you. A love story you so crave.

I saw this at the theater when I was 8 years old. One of my earliest memories of seeing a movie in the theater.

Maxoutkast

I have not seen this movie in over 20 years. It was great to watch it again, and see your reaction.

Eric

Karen Allen was also in " Raiders Of The Lost Ark"

It's apparently been a law since 1949. I think it was passed to safeguard all the gas station attendant jobs. We're a major transportation corridor, surrounded by the NYC/Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore/DC metropolitan areas and I think gas stations and rest stops are among our number one employers for the state (probably followed by garbage dumps).

Patrick Flanagan

I seem to recall a similar law in Oregon, though it's been a while since I've been out that way.

Jay Kawala

No way! is that a covid thing? Or has it always been like that?

Cassie

Here in New Jersey it's actually illegal to pump your own gas. Every gas station here is full service.
