Hacksaw Ridge (2016) - Full Reaction

Hey guys! Here's my full reaction to Hacksaw Ridge, another top tier Patron pick. WOW WOW WOW what an incredible story. I am so glad I watched this, yes parts were very graphic but I think that made it even more impactful. It was interesting how different this kind of warfare felt than in Europe that I saw in Band of Brothers. Is that what I'm in for with The Pacific? (watching the first episode this weekend). TGIF, hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

medics and cooks are the infantryman's best friends.

I've seen this movie so many times and i cry everytime, but with your reactions it increased the feelings

So far, i have truly enjoyed re-watching a lot of the stuff you have posted to far. Its fun seeing someone react to some of my favorite films (Big war/action guy here) but of course some other things. And I look forward to even more films with you. I hope you eventually share some of your favorites with us as well as reacting to things you haven't seen. I have a soft spot for Nicholas Sparks, and its sounds like you might as well???

If you watch Letters from Iwo Jima you have to watch Flags of our Fathers first. It's the sequence in which is was designed to be watched.

Mainly against allied soldiers. But that's only because up until the end of the war it was very rare for a Japanese soldier to surrender. Generally the few that were taken prisoner by the allies didn't surrender so much as end up being captured because they were too weak or injured to kill themselves or the allied soldier first. Also the allied soldiers rarely took Japanese soldiers prisoner. Not because they were more cruel then the allied soldiers in Europe, but because Japanese soldiers would regularly pretend to surrender only to blow up a grenade and kill themselves and whoever was trying to take them prisoner. If you're a allied soldier, it doesn't take too many episodes of the Japanese killing your brothers like this before you'd just shoot them instead of trying to take them prisoner.

Thank you for that recommendation, my mom told me to watch that as well. It would be nice to see the other sides perspective as it’s hard to have empathy when watching from this side

Cassie

wow! Do you mean commit brutality to their own who surrendered or americans who surrendered to them? It was like that one soldier described “it’s like they want to die”

Cassie

Wow! incredible! I’m going to have to read up on the other stuff!

Cassie

Just shut up, Dan.

Watch "Flags of our Fathers" and then "Letters from Iwo Jima". They're companion pieces.

Derik De Baun

"Letters from Iwo Jima" is one of my favorite movies along side Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. It gives a POV from the Japanese side and humanizes the other side. Hope you can give it a shot and react to that.

Logan Sandoval

I'll definitely forwarn you the war in the pacific was much more brutal then the war in Europe. The Japanese believed that it was a huge act of dishonor to surrender. This made then fight to the death and also made them commit acts of extreme brutality against anyone who surrendered. The Japanese commander in this movie committed ritual suicide because he could not live with the disgrace of losing the battle for Okinawa to the americans.

Don Imhauser

While The Pacific is toned down a little, and follows the Marines instead of the Army, you now have an idea of what you’re in for. So mentally prepared, and do what you need to for your own sanity, please.

Jacob Mai

I believe even Mel said that if people thought the deeds in the movie were a little over the top, they were actually the most believable of all the accounts.

Jacob Mai

The Japanese commander committed Seppuku, basically ritual suicide because he failed to defeat the Americans.

Robert C

They purposely left out other heroic things Doss did bc they said no one would believe it. They’d think the film went “Hollywood.”

Be Kind

Also, you seem devoid of factual knowledge. Mel Gibson has alcohol problems and has apologized for his anti-Semitic rant. He’s even helping Holocaust survivors. https://people.com/celebrity/mel-gibson-has-been-quietly-working-to-help-holocaust-survivors/ I believe that people can repent and turn their lives around. Do you? Or are you one of those controlling, judgmental, unforgiving types?

Catherine LW

Desmond Doss’ story was downplayed because they thought no one would believe what he did. Talk about a control freak... she’s not a child. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Catherine LW

Wow. No more war movies for a while, Cass’ ! They are wearing you out! This one was way over-dramatized, typical of any Mel Gibson project. Did you know he is a virulent anti-Semite and Holocaust denier? How about “The Pink Panther” with Peter Sellers sometime? Funny and no blood!

Dan L.

Great reaction. Yes the combat scenes in this are unrelenting and brutally realistic. Perfect lead in to The Pacific as said above. I also recommend the two Clint Eastwood directed films, Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. Both movies deal with Iwo Jima, the first from the American perspective and the latter from the Japanese point of view.

Eddie Collison

Wow! This is a pleasant surprise! I love this film. I’m at work right now so I’ll watch your reaction tonight. I once read a quote that describes the difference between the Pacific theater and the Western European theater: “If the European theater was a boxing match, the Pacific was a gutter knife fight”. And I truly believe that God was with Desmond Doss, answering his prayers.

Catherine LW

Hey Cassie, Great reaction. I just got finished bawling my eyes out at work. To explain the suicide of the Japanese Soldiers at the end of the film: The Japanese would literally rather die than surrender. The honorable thing for them was to die for Japan and the Emperor. Commonly they would kill themselves or fake surrender and blow themselves up with grenades. This will become more apparent when you watch “The Pacific”.

Brandon Dague

Loved the different perspective this film gave to "doing your part" that isn't all about kill or be killed. This is a taster of sorts for The Pacific - as harrowing and heavy as BofB but in a different way, due to the setting. Great reaction as always, have a brilliant weekend.
