Trivia: When Webster spots the road sign for Nuenen, he states: "Vincent Van Gogh was born in Nuenen." However, Van Gogh was born in Zundert, although he did live in Nuenen for two years from 1883-1885.

I can tell it's hard to enjoy the lighter moments when you have lingering overall concern. The high-risk Market Garden seemed like a low point in the Allies invasion strategy and intelligence gathering. Apparently had enticing potential did not realize. "They won't be waving so many orange flags at us tomorrow." "I don't like retreating."

your question how can you tell , a soldier learns to tell the difference of his vehicles and the enemies , including tanks , jeeps , airplanes uniforms ,weapons .....

My grandmother (born in 1938) told me a few years back that she, like the little boy, had chocolate for the first time ever when the american soliders liberated Luxembourg.

The scene where a german solider gets rolled over by a tank got recorded in reality. they put a sort of coffin the below the person into the ground, where a door, i think, opened up and the actor fell into it.

Oh my goodness, I’ve probably seen this at least 20 times, since it first came out 20 years ago! I have the DVD set. I’m a WWII geek, growing up in a military family. My late father ran away when he was 16 to join the army after VE Day, afraid he’d miss fighting the war, but fortunately for him, the Japanese had surrendered by the time he reached the Philippines so he became part of the occupation force. He went on to fight in Korea after that.

Thank you so much for being here and commenting on this. I so appreciate your knowledge of this series and sharing. You're right about how avoiding war is what led to it, I didn't think of it like that before I guess. Finally now (on episode 6) I can mostly keep them all apart, I hope we see more about Speirs. How many times have you seen this series?

Cassie

FYI, in the third episode, at the end, they were back in England. Remember the English lady who did their laundry? Lipton announced they were heading back to France and probably would not return to England again, is what he meant. Speirs, not Welch (Harry), is the one who said to lose all hope and accept you’re already dead. You’ll see more of Speirs later. I’m liking the two episodes, but do whatever suits you best.

Catherine LW

Popcorn (feels strange to call you that!), it’s avoiding war at all costs that created WWII. Germany broke the Versailles Treaty and started re-arming in the 20’s and 30’s, and Britain and France wouldn’t confront them about it. Churchill warned about a new war in the 30’s but was ignored. Chamberlain used appeasement with Hitler to avoid war with Germany which led to war anyway. They should have been stopped earlier when they weren’t as strong as they were in the late 30’s, but everyone wanted to avoid the conflict. So what they got was a worse conflict.

Same man cant wait. :D

Sitting here impatiently awaiting 5 + 6 <3

As some have already pointed out, The end of episode 3 is a mistake. Blithe recovered from his injuries and served in the Korean War. Tipper, the guy who got blown apart in the building and came out with his face covered in blood, also survived (In fact he was one of the last remaining men of Easy Company, only dying in 2017 at the age of 95). He spent over a year in various military hospitals until August 1945 when he was honourably discharged. His right eye was completely destroyed and had to be removed and he had to walk with a cane for a while but eventually recovered from his injuries.

Really enjoy your reactions to some of my favorite films and shows, you should do The Pacific at some point!

It breaks my heart! During world war 2 it took years afterwards to get back to a state of normal. But, this happens all around the world even now. Look at the people of Syria or Yemen or Myanmar :(

MattN

Thank you Matt, yes you summed up exactly how I feel about this and said it perfectly You are right, we need to do everything we can to avoid war. I always think about the civilians in these torn up towns, any sense of safety and normalcy completely gone

Cassie

Not sure if you were aware, but men tend to like pretty blonde women, You know...

Great reaction again! Between the episodes you brought up an important point about how watching a dramatized version of any war like this helps us humanize it. It's easy to read about war in books or look at statistics yet avoid the emotional impact of it. But, when you see it then it, even fictionalized, it helps to show the sacrifices these people made and the senseless horror of war itself. It's important to keep this in mind, because as adults we vote for people who have the authority to send kids to places that have to experiences horrors like this every day. War is terrible and we should do everything in out power to avoid it. You also have to remember that these men are running through people's towns and cities and houses. They live here and their main streets and backyards have become a war zone. It's really awful.

MattN

They WILL get progressively harder to watch with episode 9 being the most difficult. If you want to watch a movie that will give you a bigger picture of Operation Market Garden, which is what episode 4 dealt with, then I would recommend “A Bridge To Far” from the 60’s.

I'm with Jonathan in that I'd prefer you react to each episode separately. It's not that it would be bad if you did them in pairs, but there is something lost by not allowing the story to sink in. There are episodes ahead that I would not want to rush through. I'm really glad you're learning about this war. It still shapes our globe to this day. Also, have you noticed that all of the shots from the title sequence were taken from the episodes? It is fun to go back and remember which episode each scene was from.
