Which one would you want your son to jump with -- Sobel or Winters?

Clay F

Great show!

Doc Savage

It turns out that Sobel had a tragic story after World War II. He was an accountant before returning to the military during the Korean War. He served in the National Guard during Korea and retired as a Lt. Col, married, and had three children. In 1970, he shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol, but his suicide attempt failed. Instead, he wound up destroying his optic nerves in his eyes, leaving him blind, and he spent the rest of his life in an assisted-living facility. He died there of malnutrition in 1987, and no memorial service was held for him.

This episode reminds of me of squad STX training in the Infantry. That's pronounced "squad stakes". It was mandatory series of exercises we had to do as a squad in order to be qualified as combat ready - and therefore our platoon/company/battalion/brigade/division qualified as combat ready. It starts with a 12 mile tactical road march with full combat gear load out and 3 hour time limit. We'd walk a mile, run a mile, sprint to the end, turn around and help others finish. Then right into a squad assault with live ammunition followed up with defending against a counterattack. Then we'd replenish ammo and water, eat, clean weapons, and sleep. Later that night we'd move out and set up an ambush. After that, we'd resupply, eat, clean weapons, and sleep. Next day we'd do a movement to contact. That's a situation where we know the enemy is out there in a general location, and we'd move out that direction till we got into a fight with them. Goal there being to overrun their position. The position was usually a bunker, and I used to be the guy who crawled up to the entrance of the bunker, throw a grenade in it, let it blow, then stick my rifle into the opening and spray bullets at whatever else is in there. Then call up the rest of the squad to defend a counterattack. Afterwards, resupply eat, sleep (we sleep when we can, where we can). That night was an all night land navigation course. Literally from like 9PM to 6AM the next day. Then, that morning we'd finish up with an obstacle course. Good times.

A bit of info on Capt. Sobel. After being honorably discharged following WWII, he was recalled to active duty and saw service in Korea and ultimately retired as a Lt. Col. A suicide attempt in 1970 left him blind and he died of malnutrition while in a VA assisted living facility in 1987. After the war, the original men of Easy Co. came to appreciate that it was due to the intense training they received under Sobel's command that made them the special unit they became. In fact, Bill Guarnere invited Sobel to join the Easy Co. reunion association and paid Sobel's yearly dues until Sobel's death. Sadly, Sobel never chose to attend any of the company reunions.

Quacksalver Extraordinaire

It's obviously way too late now, but Sobel is being very hard on them now, so they will be prepared when it is MUCH tougher later, during the actual war. No water during marches, so that if there is no water AVAILABLE during a battle, they are trianed to persevere. Trained to run after food, as the enemy may attack while they are eating. And so on...

While you might feel sorry for Sobel you can also feel anger at him for him realizing his limitations and he was willing to jump into combat regardless. Putting his men into more danger then they were already going into. Pride before the fall.

I will never forget my first jump. I was scared shitless. And when I landed safe and sound, and didn't break my legs, I wanted to do it again.

"I might lose followers for this but... unpopular opinion, I don't like friends, and I especially don't like Ross" You might have net gained some followers with that!! Especially with vets

I had Grandpas on both sides of the war. One survived the sinking of KM Bismarck He served as an Engineer. The other flew B 17s from 43 to the end of the war and during the Berlin Airlift. I never got to meet them but the stories they left where This Good. So many stories, so much heroism and Personal responsibility and respect. They where the greatest generation and look us now. :(

main reason for joining was to watch this! glad you're giving it a go.

the next 9 i think will fill up your need for more reaction type stuff, put on your seat belt, haha

This mini series is not about the Sullivan brothers. This is an actual true story that follows Easy Company through their whole war. The old men in the beginning are the actual men portrayed in the series -- you find out who is who in the last episode. They jumped into Normandy the night before the beach landings.
