"Order for Jake!" a booming voice called out over the bustling sounds of the fast-food kitchen.
Jake, a lanky delivery driver in his mid-twenties, startled at the sound. He'd been fiddling with his phone, triple-checking the order details while trying to ignore the growing queue behind him. Shoving his device into his pocket, he stepped up to the counter, craning his neck to meet the gaze of the statuesque woman towering over him.
"Uh, yeah, that's me," he stammered, his voice barely carrying over the sizzle of fryers and chatter of customers.
The woman behind the counter - her name tag read 'Jane' - smiled down at him. She was easily over seven feet tall, her muscular frame barely contained by the restaurant's stretchy uniform, which was only a brown top, that barely contained the girls. The countertop that had once been at chest height for most employees now sat at her waist level.
"Great! Let's see here," Jane said, her voice warm but loud enough to make Jake wince slightly. She turned to grab the order, her movements causing the floorboards to creak ominously.
Jake found himself staring, still not used to the dramatic changes that had swept through society in the past few years. He'd been in high school when the virus hit, transforming 90% of adult women into towering amazons practically overnight. Now, at 24, he was still adjusting to a world where he often felt like a child in comparison to many women.
Jane turned back, a huge paper bag in her hands. "Alright, so that's two Triple Maple Burgers, one large poutine, and a side of Timbits, right?"
Jake nodded, fumbling for his phone to confirm. As he pulled it out, his sweaty palms betrayed him, and the device slipped from his grasp. In a panic, he lunged forward, but Jane's lightning-fast reflexes beat him to it.
"Whoops! Careful there, eh?" she chuckled, easily plucking the phone from the air with her free hand. She held it out to him, and Jake couldn't help but notice how his phone looked like a toy in her massive palm.
"Th-thanks," Jake mumbled, face burning as he took back his phone. He tried to ignore the amused glances from the other customers in line. "Sorry about that, I'm just a bit... flustered today."
Jane's expression softened. "No worries, hun. We all have those days. First time delivering to Big Beaver Burgers?"
Jake nodded, grateful for her understanding tone. "Yeah, I usually stick to the downtown core, but they're short-staffed today so..."
"Well, welcome to the Beaver!" Jane grinned, gesturing around the restaurant with her free arm. Jake couldn't help but notice how her bicep strained against the sleeve of her uniform. "We're a friendly bunch here, even if we might seem a bit... overwhelming at first."
Jake managed a weak smile. "Thanks, I appreciate that. It's just... still taking some getting used to, you know? All the changes."
Jane nodded sympathetically. "Oh, believe me, I know. One day I'm a 5'4" barista struggling to reach the top shelf, the next I'm ducking through doorways and bench-pressing refrigerators. Life's funny that way, eh?"
Her casual tone about such a dramatic transformation made Jake chuckle despite his nervousness. "Yeah, I guess so. Must be quite an adjustment."
"You have no idea," Jane said, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. "But hey, enough about me. Let's get you sorted with this order, shall we?"
She held out the bag, and Jake reached for it, only to find himself struggling with its unexpected weight. Jane quickly steadied him with her other hand, her grip gentle but firm on his shoulder.
"Whoa there! Sorry about that," she apologised, easily taking back the bag with one hand. "Sometimes I forget my own strength. Here, let me help you get that into your delivery bag."
As Jane came around the counter to assist him, Jake couldn't help but feel a mix of awe and intimidation. She moved with a grace that belied her size, expertly navigating the space without bumping into anything - or anyone.
"There we go," she said, carefully placing the order into Jake's insulated delivery bag. "All set and ready to go. Need any help getting it to your car?"
Jake shook his head, determined to maintain at least some dignity. "No, thanks. I've got it from here."
Jane smiled, giving him a friendly pat on the back that nearly knocked him off balance. "Alright then. Drive safe out there, Jake. And don't be a stranger, eh? We'll have you feeling right at home in no time."
As Jake made his way to the exit, he couldn't help but feel a mix of relief and something else - a strange sort of excitement, perhaps? Despite his initial nervousness, there was something undeniably intriguing about this new world he was living in.
Pushing open the door - which now had an additional handle installed at a lower height - Jake stepped out into the Canadian summer sunshine. He took a deep breath, steadying himself for the drive ahead. As he walked to his car, he found himself smiling slightly, already anticipating his next delivery to Big Beaver Burgers. Maybe, just maybe, he was starting to see the appeal of this brave new world after all.
