The big Kahuna

Story

The island of Hōkūleʻa was an tropical paradise, with little contact the outside world. Its inhabitants lived by ancient traditions and were deeply connected to their land and sea. Kalani, a petite and gentle Hawaiian woman, had spent her life here, dreaming of her upcoming marriage to Mālama, the son of the revered Kahuna.

As the sun set over the azure waves, Kalani and Mālama walked hand in hand along the beach, their hearts full of anticipation for their future together.

"Kalani, our wedding is only a week away," Mālama said, his voice filled with joy. "I can't wait to start our life together."

"Neither can I," Kalani replied, her eyes sparkling. "Everything feels perfect."

But the peace of the island was about to be disrupted. A strange virus, unknown to the islanders, began to spread through Hōkūleʻa. It started with mild symptoms, but soon, women on the island began to experience unprecedented growth. They grew taller, stronger, and more powerful with each passing day. The villagers, isolated from the world, interpreted these changes as a divine sign.

Over the course of two weeks, Kalani began to notice subtle changes in her body. Her hands looked slightly larger, her muscles felt stronger, and her clothes started to feel tighter. Each day, she grew a little taller, her perspective of the world slowly shifting. By the end of the two weeks, she stood much taller than before, her transformation complete.

One morning, as she stood up from her mat, Kalani gasped, realizing just how much she had changed.

"Mālama!" Kalani called out, her voice deeper and more resonant.

Mālama rushed to her side, his eyes widening in shock as he took in her new form. "Kalani... you've grown so much."

Kalani nodded, a mix of wonder and fear in her eyes. "What does this mean?"

The villagers soon gathered, whispering and pointing. The island's women were all experiencing growth, but Kalani was one of the tallest and most imposing figures among them. The elders convened an emergency meeting, seeking guidance from the gods.

In the village square, Mālama's father, Kahuna Pono, addressed the people. "My friends, we are witnessing a miracle. The gods have blessed our women with incredible strength and size. We must see this as a sign and find wisdom in these changes."

One of the older women, Lani, stepped forward. "Kahuna Pono, our women are growing stronger, but what does this mean for our leadership? Should we not consider a new leader who embodies these divine gifts?"

All eyes turned to Kalani, now standing head and shoulders above most of the villagers. Her heart raced as she felt the weight of their expectations.

"No," Kalani said, shaking her head. "I'm not a leader. I'm just Kalani."

Mālama's expression darkened, his jealousy evident. He had always been proud of his strong body, built through years of hard work and hunting. Now, in just two weeks, his once-petite girlfriend was towering over him and being considered for the role of the next Kahuna—a title he was supposed to inherit.

One night, Mālama was unloading a boat that had brought supplies from neighbouring islands. As he worked, he struck up a conversation with one of the crew members.

"So you all have them huge women here too uh?" the crewman said, shaking his head. "My wife is now stronger and taller than me. It’s hard to get used to."

Mālama nodded, feeling a sense of camaraderie. "I know what you mean. My girlfriend, Kalani, is now one of the biggest woman in our village. It's... difficult."

The crewman leaned in closer, lowering his voice. "I've heard rumors that a cure is being developed and tested in Singapore. Maybe all of this is just temporary, like a long, realistic nightmare."

Mālama's eyes widened with hope. "A cure? Are you sure?"

The crewman shrugged. "It's just a rumor, but it gives me some comfort to think it might be true."

As Mālama continued working, the thought of a cure lingered in his mind. Maybe things could go back to the way they were, and he could reclaim his rightful place.
