Need Set names, + Set bonuses
Added 2025-02-19 20:13:21 +0000 UTCSo i think I'll have Will put all his current gear into the pile of refined ash (once i figure out how to make that happen) and hit it all with Sourdough.
The result will be a Set. The name of which is pretty critical. I'm looking for some ideas for the name of the set, and it's set bonuses.
Here are the Ideas for set names i've had already:
Holdna's Consort
The Serpent
The Deceiver
I don't have any set power ideas, yet, but I'm thinking they'll be formatted similar to Diablo 3 whereby having a certain number of them unlocks certain extra boosts, and they all tend to synergize.
This will be the story's first ACTUAL set items, so it's gonna be pretty tight.
Comment with set names and set bonuses, please! Also, I'll save this post, so if you wanna suggest sets that have nothing to do with Will that someone else can have, this is a decent place to do it.

Requium of the Immortal or Mantle of the Immortal would work as the title of the complete set.

2025-03-31 23:13:30 +0000 UTCSerpents Bite set 2 piece, the Tomahawk should add poison damage along with its other damage additions it used to have, Mask of the deceiver his helm should give him the ability to shapeshift, with a nice buff to acuity and focus, along with the regular bonus it has. the set together should increase the reverence scaled creatures have towards the wearer.

2025-02-22 20:30:45 +0000 UTCAlso some ideas for his axe which I assume should synagise with his armour and be apart of the set: The Harbinger - a dark jade crescent halberd with a black obsidian handle and two flowing crimson tassels Serpentine Bane - a bardiche with coiling snake flowing up the handle and the side profile of the blade resembling a fang Cleft Eternity - a traditional guan dao with the spiked (or cleft) spine. The pommel can have a spiked end and the shaft can be spilt into two so that he can eventually use it with both hands.

2025-02-21 06:13:58 +0000 UTCSpecific armour piece name ideas: Gorgan Gauntlets (hands) - snake themes and influence on stone and earth Eternal Ringmail (body) - just a good play on words Khepresh of the fallen (head)- so I did some research of ceremonial and war crowns and a khepresh was the name of the crown worn by pharaohs, and quite fittingly they often included a snake protruding from the front of it. Grievous sin (legs) - These will be the greaves he will wear and they will bear the weight of his sins and the blood of the sinners he will slay Ashen vambraces (feet) - Someone previously mentioned ash to ash as a name and I really like that and the imagery of William standing in field of the ash of his brethren Beginning again (chest piece) - a small play on the armour piece brigandine and this part of the story symbolising william beginning again as a true force to be reckoned with

2025-02-21 04:59:21 +0000 UTCName suggestions: Chimaeric Coils - the goat/ lion/ snake monster from fables and the circle or rebirth of the oroboros Deceivers Requiem - a final call to action of all the lost souls that will be combined into his armour set Calamity of the Covenant - a summation of all the chaos William oh will bring down upon the tower and the graneshians, also the covenant refering to the bonds between will and his fellow fighters being stronger than the kinship between himself and the rest of humanity I don't think mentioning holdna or any religious meaning is a good idea because the armour should reflect the path William will follow in the future and not of what faction he belongs to. Also I've got no idea about set bonuses and all that technical stuff but all the ideas I've read seem really cool

2025-02-21 03:17:30 +0000 UTCA few set bonus ideas based on what we know about Immortal Serpents/Deceivers: 1. Regeneration can be manipulated; Maybe some kind of shedding/regrowing ability that allows you to tweak properties of the new body parts. This might involve altering the appearance to camouflage better/mimic certain appearances, enhanced resilience, etc. 2. Some kind of adaptation ability that applies to the items in the set itself. The armor will regrow and adapt to damage whenever it gets damaged. 3. Some kind of interaction with miasma?? 4. Make copies of the armor pieces that shares weaker versions of Will's skills or attributes to party members (or vice versa)

2025-02-20 23:21:57 +0000 UTCHerald of The Serpent. 2pc focuses on mobility and a soft utility skill based on eyes. 4pc focuses on defense and mobility utility surrounding molting. Such as molting for physical damage recovery and molting to shed the side effects going up or down a floor in the tower. 6pc that lets will devour miasma from an opponent or an opponents equipment on contact. Molt sheddings now hold stored miasma and have basic locomotion and recognize hostile enemies. Basically a ninja serpent.

2025-02-20 22:50:36 +0000 UTCDont think I like the idea about decievers being in the name since it’s the tower naming it and not the church. But I do like the word reliquary.
Ryan Berends
2025-02-20 22:16:32 +0000 UTCI also think Deceiver is too leaning into what followers of Granesh would call it, so shouldn’t be in the name. There’s a lot of great ideas for names here, I like those which are more related to the origin story, along the lines of “Ashen Lament”, “The Gathered Family”, “Fallen Climber” etc and less directly about revenge/retribution/what is likely to happen to the church next. But also all the stuff Will does is kinda quirky and over the top so the name should probably be quirky/funny and over the top too. What would Jason call it?
Alex
2025-02-20 21:32:03 +0000 UTCIt's gotta have the word Scions in it! "Blank" of The Serpentine Scions Helm, Vestments, Skins, Treads, etc... Or "The Immortal Serpent's Rebirth" Kinda like a Phoenix? Reborn from its own corpse's ashes. I also like references to Jörmungandr (The World Serpent) and Ouroboros (The Eternal Serpent).

2025-02-20 20:54:29 +0000 UTCI think holdna and deceiver aren’t names the ashes would identify with. Serpent stuff makes sense, maybe relating to his class as a resourceful climber makes sense too. After all, it’s his ability that transform everything. Maybe Ashy Snake Harness? Patchwork Snake Harness? As more Ash is absorbed or the set items become higher tiered it changes Refined serpant harness Crystalized serpants legacy

2025-02-20 20:53:04 +0000 UTCSerpents lament or _____ lament. One ability I still think is dope is that when Will would take lethal damage, he instead molts off the damage and can reappear later. Obviously there would be some limitations added. I also think leaning even more into mobility and slithering, giving Will the ability to slither through air, dirt and matter in a way that would make him a terror to deal with in a duel. Lastly, something about a devouring ability perhaps. Something about unhinging his jaw and integrating some benefits into himself. Maybe also something targeted at Granesh too. Since they killed all the others.

2025-02-20 16:00:27 +0000 UTCSomething oroboros for the name, maybe false oroboros (to fit in deceiver). Powers in the themes of oroboros - growing from sacrifice, reverse causality and being a skin shedding snake. E.g sacrifice body parts (or stats, or memories, or emotions) to gain stats (or phantom body parts) added to the set. Guaranteed hit attacks (with reverse causality - will's punch hits because it must, even if that means something improbable has to have retroactively previously have happened). Set pieces (skin) can be shed to grow new ones.

2025-02-20 15:54:07 +0000 UTCD3 set theory comment… I remember watching the D3 sets become more standardized as the game reached the end of its active development. They more clearly set up a design goal for each breakpoint across all sets as they reworked a small number of them every patch. In the end I believe every set had some form of defensive scaling in the 4pc bonus that played off of or complimented the skill introduced in the 2pc bonus. The 2pc bonus was a small bonus and incentivized using a certain skill with “small” damage bonuses or alterations to its effects. The 6pc was where the 10,000% damage bonuses and big alterations to a skill effect came into play. Big changes like auto target, automatic and free secondary skill casts, and other types of “automatic”. Some sets had more than 6 pieces of gear for their set, but they all only had 6pc bonus as there top end. Some had weapons, rings, or a necklace that you could use and then squeeze in a 2pc from another set that did not have extra options. Having a small skill change and damage bonus on the 2pc allowed for mixing with other sets while not introducing any of what I call as ‘’SS” rank metas. The existence of an SS meta is a sign of bad design on top of bad balance. Its existence means that your not just not cool for choosing a different build but instead actively handicapping yourself by not playing it to such a degree that the people who play an SS build are practically playing a different game than you at that point. For your story you could design the sets from the top down as being centered around the identity/story of a divinity or Legend with bonuses breaking down into clear thresholds across all sets from all factions (2pc, 4pc, 6pc, etc.). Gear could evolve into a set piece if the gear becomes aligned with the story and identity of a divinity or Legend and allow the wearer to tap into that bigger story. This changes “set”s away from needing to find a specific piece of gear that is a set item and instead allows any item to grow into a “set” level of rarity by either being used consistently in a certain way or being crafted a certain way. It also allows for set items to lose their set status if they stop furthering the story of a legend or divinity because the set bonuses themselves are due to becoming part of a larger story. Which allows for a convenient explanation of why nobody on these lower floors has sets (or seen to have sets). There stories and use of items are too small, or there not needed. What if… What if the deceiver is needed as a catalyst for other sets to awaken? The deceiver set and story could be centered around shaking things up and introducing chaos and it arises out of stagnation with the odds of it appearing increasing each time it tries and fails. All those ashes of deceivers that are being locked down could all count towards failure attempts and lend plot armor to William Oh successfully breaking in to the facility and successfully getting away and also successfully crafting gear that makes a set of the serpent/deceiver because the story wants to be told. This then triggers increased odds of other sets being put into play or created by other factions because the serpent/deceiver is active on the field again. For example, with a deceiver set running around shaking up the established order and making chaos it makes it easier for both agents the order aligned god/legend in your story and the chaos aligned one to do things in line with the bigger story, increasing odds that set blessings will appear etc. What if… What if Notable soft set users are building there own Legend and copy cats are contributing to that Legend and eventually that Legend can be a strong enough identity for items that aren’t a direct copy of the initial soft set but more indirectly related to those initial items to grow into a Set bonus that’s now available because the story of that one fire user that had a really specific way of using fire and became so famous he inspired a lineage and countless numbers of the upcoming generations to build there class in his image and it created a story big enough to tap into? What if… What if there was a curve charting the odds of an item evolving into a set based on a number of things? Is the item being used in a way that the big Legend used it? Are you the user trying to achieve what the big Legend achieved? The big Legend had an axe, do you have an axe? A hammer? Or are you doing something related to the Big legend enough to trigger a set bonus evolution but you’re using a bow? Do you get a more general set power up related to the big Legend because you aren’t using the signature weapon and set bonus relating to “axe of the serpent” actually requires you have an axe but you can get something serpent-ey for your bow because your party leader is rocking that “axe of the serpent” set and your 120% on team William oh and you get something like that previously described game breaking ring of aiming correction that makes your arrows “snake” through the air to your target? What if… What if you spent your formative years right before getting your class as a prisoner of the faction antagonistic to the deceiver because you hyped his Legend so that it spread past the lore accurate stars, and then you were rescued by the deceiver, and then were there for the birth of the first set of the deceiver? What kind of set based class would you get? Or what kind of trial reward item would you get? What if… What if true sets effectively make you a Demi god. And what if there’s a societal/civilizational filter surrounding the introduction of sets similar to nuclear weaponry in the real world. True sets make it easy for one man to nuke civilization back to the Stone Age. What if a significant portion of previous tower resets happened because true set users just went ape shit burned civilization down? What if in the early cycles the tower tried to put bounties on true set users and that led to a vicious cycle of the set user just being more antagonistic to society? What if the tower back one user over another and that succeeded initially but then produced such a powerful blowback as the other Legends compensated with creating more singularly devastating effects? What if the goal this time it to try and weave the Legends together in a way that Set creation pushes a wave of expansion up the tower but then backs off and restablishes a new natural status quo, making it harder to keep set blessings in play, which lets society settle and then breeds a new series of events pushing higher? —End— I have more thoughts but they are too jumbled to articulate in a single post. I hope this gives you fuel for designing your sets in a lore friendly and synergy kind of way.

2025-02-20 07:36:32 +0000 UTCNext up, recurrence! Will’s already *touched* on drawing from the experiences and lowkey getting possessed by his counterparts in previous coils, and this is a perfect opportunity to lean into that! Anyone of enough note to ever obtain this set has a counterpart to some extent, yeah? What with the whole “many wills, many Akuls, many ruins of eerily familiar towns in other floors which we now know used to be tower-bases before they fell to one disaster or another caused by the collapse of society on the upper floors”. So, let it let people draw upon their past lives! Let Will draw upon the Deceivers, and deceive even himself that he’s… a different deceiver, I guess? You seem to be fond of that idea but haven’t really brought it back, so here you go! You’ve esp. been setting up for it with the memory key, yeah?
Quazzy
2025-02-20 06:56:45 +0000 UTCNext up is mimicry. The Ouroboros definitionally grows at least as fast as it can gnaw, but Immortal Serpents can also copy things. How do we make this synergize with the above, you ask? Stealing his victims’ abilities! Ideally he can only gnaw on people stronger than him in the first place- both abilities would be boring otherwise, and Ouroboros’s whole thing is that it gnaws on things too big for it to swallow (like Will!)- and perhaps stolen abilities can only be used a finite number of times or only a limited number can be stolen at oncr, but you’re better at balance than I am. At the end of the day, Will’s already a thief. Leaning into it more would be neat.
Quazzy
2025-02-20 06:50:37 +0000 UTCI don’t think we want Will to be a murder-hobo, so remember that Ouroboros doesn’t ever fully consume his prey: he just gnaws on it to grow his own strength. Will murdering people for power seems off, but stealing a few stats here and there? Maybe stealing some levels for some temporary regeneration or experience? Right up his alley, and it’d lead to some interesting high-octane yet surprisingly chill fights, which you’re AMAZING at writing.
Quazzy
2025-02-20 06:46:49 +0000 UTCBut hydra are totally different from immortal serpents anyway; the theme is cannibalism, deception, and recurrence, not splitting. So! I propose the following, taken straight from Ouroboros himself: 1) the ability to grow by consuming one’s own. This is a nice nod to how the set is being made in the first place, and also lets you add some spicy motivation for Will to come into conflict with high-level climbers, or serpents, or Lords, etc.
Quazzy
2025-02-20 06:43:16 +0000 UTCA part of me is tempted to suggest something Hydra-like, leaning into the Deceiver aspect and Will’s recurring theme of sacrifice: pop off a limb and make a homonculus out of it, then regenerative effects, hive-mind communication, and shapeshifting to make them all mimick Will or others to synergize with it. Great set… but it’s also a niche currently occupied by the Tangled, so that’s a no-go.
Quazzy
2025-02-20 06:37:25 +0000 UTCSo to be clear, this is going to be the result of steeping a full set in the very essence of innumerable Immortal Serpents, each of whom acted as humans in life, and each of whom was brought to an untimely end by the Church of Granesh?

Possibly allows him to sacrifice bodyparts (mouth, right hand, eyesight, etc.) to his phantom hand for power boosts. Sacrifice and boost can be temporary or permanent, but would be based on the metaphorical use of the part in question. I don't have a good enough grasp of what his future potential is, so I can't make a vague foreshadow-y name related to that. Instead, I shall reference the thousands of slain, voiceless children and the way this story quietly refuses to acknowledge the trauma everyone is building up. Bonus points for it tying into Ouroboros' tail-eating aspects. Not that I mind you ignoring their trauma, it just feels thematically appropriate to allude to it with a Set made of murdered children.

(The /'s are meant to be either or so you just chose one) The set as a bare minimum should enhance his Phantom Hand/Eidolon in general. Passively manifest a second Phantom Hand. When the second Hand is deployed it and it's brother share capabilities effectively halving the abilities of each. For the purposes of Dimensional Storage each hand acts as a point of entry and departure. For an amount of charge, the climber can give each hand the capabilities of a sing manifested hand, effectively doubling their over all strength.

When equipped each end of the belt passive move about to assist it's wearer on its own, think the cloak of levitation from the Dr strange movie. For an amount of charge, the belt will rapidly unwind itself and then envelop itself around it's wearer into an ultra hard and very flexible full coverage body armor.

2025-02-19 21:19:17 +0000 UTCHood of The Mighty Python: A hood made of black and shiny iridescent snake scales. when hooded the climbers face becomes completely obscured in shadows except for their eyes which become snake like and glow an eerie green. when equipped the climber passively gains a danger sense and for a charge can go into a trance that manifests a prophetic dream. This is a reference to the Greek monster Python, a giant snake who made it's lair in the sulfurous caves of Pythia. it was slain by Apollo who then installed his oracles in those self same caves.

2025-02-19 21:15:34 +0000 UTCAmulet of the Ever-Adder: An amulet depicting a snake eating itself. Noticeably it is slowly rotating like a clock or a fidget spinner. For some charge the climber can make a small bubble of time dilation making those in the bubble experience time at a relatively faster or slower rate then those outside of the bubble. this effect lasts depending of=n the amount of charge spent. Those inside the bubble can't be effected by those without and vise versa.

2025-02-19 21:04:47 +0000 UTCAshfallen Set, Scaling set bonus, Initially tap into memories of the ashes of the fallen. Gives options for info dumps. Scaled up maybe start interacting with the memories, grow to the point of summoning ghosts of the fallen. Allows will to replace billy-bob and the boys or at least incorporate their memories with those of the fallen. Allowing them to have greater will and drive, would tie in the ghosts summons to be more in line with his theme rather than a random useful item. Greater set scaling allow the ghosts to wield pieces of the set? Maybe incorporate some crossover with his ghost hand? Have a ghost for each finger? Allows the ghosts to use wills charges to activate his or item abilities from the ghost remotely as if they are the caster. Idk brainstorming at this point.

Legendary Effect: When equipped at the same time the climber can loan acuity points to other stats for a small charge. When those points are returned to acuity the climber only gets half their charge back. For example if 10 points of acuity are loaned to strength it costs 2 charge, then when the points are refunded to acuity the climber only receives 1 charge back.

Set Bonus: - Scales of Ash: Increase resistance to fire and venom. - Vengeance: Double damage against those who have harmed you, your allies, or your kin. - Mournful Wail: All attacks deal psychic damage to surrounding enemies, this damage has a small chance to afflict enemies with the "Psychic Anguish" debuff that inflicts ongoing psychic damage and overwhelming grief. - Summon the Fallen (active): Expend Charge to temporarily conjure the vengeful ghosts of your fallen kin to fight on behalf. Summoned ghosts can be dismissed early at will and will avoid harming yourself or your allies, but are otherwise not under your control.

2025-02-19 20:52:00 +0000 UTCAs I understand it, a Soft Set has a synergistic effect when used intelligently together. So a Set should have a Legendary Effect when equipped at the same time. With that in mind I suggest something like "Armaments of the Unholy Shenlong". A Long or Lung is a chinese style dragon, think Shinron from DBZ or the dragons from Breath of The Wild and Shenlong is another word for a dragon God. that makes it sound more legendary to me. This could allow Will to incorporate an an aesthetic component from each of his sacrifices; Huge serpentine dragon with the horns of a goat.

2025-02-19 20:50:57 +0000 UTCAll of the items getting something, He has dragon mask , boots of water walking, psychic axe, amulet with territorial battlefield control Mask should change to an immortal serpent Mask, boots turn into snakeskin combat boots that also make him harder to track, axe no longer debuffs Will when he uses it to make deals, and the amulet coming with some custom environments instead of him needing to store environments, the ring should become a signet ring and add poison damage to all attacks Set bonus being a boost to regeneration and consumption, causing problems later as his hand grows back much faster Also pants, a strength ring, and upper body armour, I don’t remember what they do

2025-02-19 20:44:29 +0000 UTCThe Deceitful Hydra - 2 items: each piece of the set [beyond the first] you have equipped increases the bonus stats of each item by 5% (or some other arbitrary amount if this is too much) - 4 items: each piece of the set [beyond the first] increases the effect of your archetype abilities by 5% (another arbitrary number) - 6 items: you may wear any number of items that are part of the set at any time, [or carry them in an extradimensional space]. Only one item may apply its bonuses per slot, as usual. You may replace an active item with another at any time, but may not use the replaced item again for the next 24 hours (shortened by resilience). Each subsequent replacement item you activate in a short time frame has its non-attribute bonuses increased by Acuity / 10 * number_of_items_replaced Consider any text in [] as optional. This mostly plays on stuff Will is already good at while leaning into the flavour of being a Deceiver and the set being made out of many snakes.

Set Bonuses: 2 items - increase affinity with serpents and reptiles 3 items - increase natural healing and improve healing received from abilities or consumables 4 items - gain a permanent incremental resistance to any damage received after healing from said injury 5 items - all attacks inflict a potent venom. 6 items - instead of dying, heal completely one time, gaining a temporary buff to all attributes. The Set is destroyed upon activation of this ability.

2025-02-19 20:35:04 +0000 UTCDigested Skin, Devoured Self, Detailed Snake, or some other variant in the snake eating itself. The set effect could be to partially call upon some of the dead deceivers abilities to boost certain items effects, like a ranger archetype boost but for items thing. If you want this to be temporary it could be that every use could burn through some of the resource, or perhaps like the Phantom fingers it will deactivate it for a certain amount of time

2025-02-19 20:32:39 +0000 UTCTo draw from the mythology of my native Aotearoa, "X" of the Taniwha would be thematically on point - Taniwha being large named sea serpents. My suburb when I was growing up was named after one, Whataitai. Moving away from mythological snakes as I'm sure you'll get a tonne of those already - Trickster gods come to mind. Given Will's obsession with tomahawk as a weapon, maybe Coyote would fit the bill best? Alternatively, if you wanted to be a bit meta, you could name the set after Perry >.> Set bonuses - if I'm going to use a set in an action RPG I'm looking for something with a seemingly simple effect that pivots my entire build. Something like "Anything killed by corpse explosion spawns a new explosion on death", that sort of thing. Assuming that we want to have it apply to Will's primary abilities, that means we want something that interacts with either his Phantom Hand or Aspect skills. Hand? Maybe the ability to overcome a targets innate resistance to the Phantom Hands interaction with items bound to them by burning charge. If you really wanted to OP Will more than he is already, change that to being able to interact with someone's internal organs - think force grip on the trachea, or stopping their heart from beating. Aspect - allowing the aspect to interact with opponents the same way it interacts with terrain could be interesting.

2025-02-19 20:28:27 +0000 UTCThe turning of the wheel -time passes in a cycle, this set marks that the cycle is turning in favor of will and the snakes Bonuses should probably be themed around tricks, illusions, and survival. Maybe the ability to call apon the abilities or knowledge of past deceiver? For one piece you can call apon the memories of past deceivers to learn about your immediate area, two pieces you can call apon the memories of past deceivers to learn about a specific person/place/thing, probably with a cool down. Three pieces you can call apon an ability of a past deceiver chosen by the set itself to fit the current situation, double or triple the cost in charge of the originally ability. Etc etc etc, not sure how the synergies would all work out
