No chapter today.

I'm sorry, bit of a double whammy of life stuff yesterday and poor sleep tonight. I've got 500ish words done so far, providing a good jump off point, but it's not really impressive yet. I'm gonna try to take a siesta at some point as well as get better sleep tonight.

Hopefully if I get a siesta I can put a bit more down before the end of the day, making finishing tomorrow much easier.

I'll try and get it out tomorrow regardless.

Next chapter planned: A discussion with the Baron and a short return to normal life to catch our breath before shit REALLY hits the fan.

I wanted to get to the auction at least before things got real bad, because there was at least 1 cool Sacrifice i wanted to get to.

Since I'm a little behind, feel free to comment on these three things. As always, if I think your idea is better than mine, I'll steal it and say you guessed right.

#1: What devious plan does the Wyrd family have for the city of Akul?
#2: What kind of cool stuff might be at an auction?
#3: You wanna see Will actually participate in the under 25 tourney? yay or nay?

What happened to ch. 66?

TK Jack

Tournment arc should be a few paragraphs, maybe refernced at start of each chapter by Jason for a bit? maybe one chapter with all the highlights? Otherwise have other characters do it while our MC trys to get food prepers to perm join the team.

Scion

Cult of the Monster Climbers ~ a bunch of idiots who want the more intelligent monsters to move between floors. I wonder if you could smuggle a monster between floors or if the tower would prevent it? (I’m not saying a kaiju should be smuggled to another floor, obviously. What an incredible dumb thing to attempt.) I will note though that the thought is somewhat inspired by two other tower series - Tower of Jack, and Dungeon Crawler Carl ***spoiler*** where the towers sometimes lets npcs become climbers/loopholes).

Andrew Tobin

Will would probably only participate in the tourney if a.) There's a really useful or valuable reward, like kaiju hunting rights, or b) he bets a lot of money on himself.

JACOB HEBERT

Maybe just have Jason relay each fights super briefly at the beginning of a few chapters ?

sebsebs

Auction: Sentient relic leech cocoon: leeches powers from a relic and gifts the power to a relic it leeches back onto. Loth wants this. Only Will can get it. Can't hatch it until it gets placed in the Relic dust barrel, on a full moon, covered in butter and fragments of swamp stomper boots. Or something daft like that.

StrollingEye

Akul devious plan : to be taken down, and new other proto-town somewhere else. Not a restrained-by-sleep Kaiju(s) to prevent spawns, but several restrained-by-Wyrd-family-Thorns Kaiju. And it's not hidden, it's a raging pit fighting Kaiju fighting betting ring. Bleeding obvious. Flaunting the Wyrd family power ...

StrollingEye

Specifically a false flag release of the tame kaiju only to have the coup kid defeat it. This proves that Akul isn't capable of keeping the city safe and should be replaced as the cities chief defender with said coup kid. That way The Wyrds gain a fully built city without having to build one of their own.

Ack, sorry for the sleep issues. Always the worst, especially when running up on any type of self imposed deadline. I'm caught slightly off guard as I had planned to distract myself here from the RR trolls. It seems like I shall need to revisit some Jedediah Trapper in audiobook format as an alternative. I recommend elderberry mead for a solution to sleep issues. :)

Dlandis

Maybe he has an unplanned appearance at the tournament? Like stumbles in at the finals and beats the to finalists fighting together or something? I would be up for a quick tournament arc like 3 chaps max though I agree that it doesn't really match the current pacing.

I like this

Jimmy Oneil

Be a good place for a cameo too. NA MEAN

1. Wyrd family is trying to find a way to control the Kaiju’s and take over the floor. Some plan to dispose of the baron/other high levels, make the floor a Wyrd stronghold and not let anybody except their faction pass the floor. 2. There should be tons of cool shit at the auction but nothing for Will, his teammates need gear and he can always steal from his plethora of enemies πŸ˜ƒ

Josh Cothran

I think the tourney should be over in like a couple paragraphs. Buck the whole β€œtourney arc” trope and just have Will destroy his opponents stupidly fast. It’d be funny and we still get to get the loot

Josh Cothran

I think it would be slightly hilarious if Will somehow got over level 25 before the tournament. But that would probably mean his party does the same which means no need for Kaiju fights so that is a no. I'm not behind the tournament idea because of beaten dead clichΓ©s. But I have faith in your entertaining writing.

Ral

Cool thing at the auction, a brewing barrel. Some sort of barrel that boosts crafts or the growth of tiny organisms. Exploding harpoon spear, AoT reference because Kaiju. Or maybe a cape with godzilla spikes that let you use lighting. Or like a mec chest plate that acted like a wand and fired a chest beam. Somthing that is cool to us readers but doesn't interest Will's party. Maybe some sort of windwhisper relic. Next floor is the ocean? So maybe a lot of ocean prep relics. Relics to help see/move/fight/projectiles in water. Real expensive way to make/find food on other floors. Like a seed bag that planted edible plant of the local varieties. Or a weapon that make things killed drop food at the cost of reducing the loot.

Ral

Tourney for sure

Kronos

Or inside the coffin is a rare sacrifice that make summons/spawn of a climber Kaiju size.

Ral

I was thinking the same, feed a tangled to the kaiju and have it chest burst out as a human kaiju they have partial control of. Would mean they control the floor access some what if the tangle spreads like the xeno morph in alien.

Ethan Gardner

That’s what resistance relics are for, plus they are tangled and not meant to be dealt with by barons themselves probably. Wyrd could also get a relic that stops the damage redirection if it is above a set target

Pseudo

Problem is the Barons whole shtick is one shotting Kaijus

Enzo Elacqua

The Wyrd family clearly are gonna slowly defund the education of the city, thus decreasing people’s critical thinking in order to allow them to be able to easily swallow propaganda in support of a senile tyrannical ruler with no understanding of politics! Flawless plan really, can’t think of any rl examples right now but I’m sure there are some

Enzo Elacqua

Tournament arc hype train, let’s gooo!!

ParadoxFox

Obviously the Wyrd family wants to destroy the city, no safe locations means no easy way to organize Kaiju hunting means free for all means Wyrd and their allies can control who moves up. The Auction should have tons of preserved body parts from dead adventurers that are totally on the up and up, like a tongue in a jar from some level 50 bard that died and bequeathed his remains to his children. Also loot boxes full of random probably terrible relics with effects that are too niche (like the ice sickle) best case Will can develop a gambling habit and turn most of them into sourdough dust or he can find something he can break by locking it into his hand.

Exrotes

1: given the Wyrdness factor it's not going to be something obvious. Maybe they want to make a Kaiju into one of the Tangled? 2: Maybe a sacrifice that tilts Will's sense of gravity such that he can walk on the ceiling. 3: Nah. I want to see Loth trap the Tournament.

Cyrus McEnnis

And now I’m thinking about how good a phoenix kaiju would be for a power source. Keep it captured, and infinite heat generation.

Andrew Tobin

I’m thinking wyrd is going to re direct damage from tangled to the kaiju. if you give the kaiju a LOT of regen relics you get unkillable tangled for anyone that can’t one hit a kaiju. Also immune to things like chain lightning.

Pseudo

Zombie kaiju? Rabid kaiju? Phoenix kaiju? Imagine a kaiju that just keeps respawning. Tangled kaiju. I have no idea if that is even possible. I would assume it’s either kaiju or Alicia’s family or just tower destabilisation related? Maybe it’s just all a distraction while something else is going on. Don’t watch my lovely assistant as I saw this tower floor in half! The auction house owner wants to auction off the auction house but no one wants it. Thankless bloody climbers. A junk box of random shit no one has taken the time to do a valuation on. Those are always fun. I can’t remember his name, but it would be good for their floor helper dude to show up briefly, doing something random like eating a sandwich and getting kicked out of the auction for eating a sandwich. Sure Will could do the tourney. Or he could show up, get ready to fight, and then get totally derailed by the phantom thief and go off chasing and miss it, and get into a huff.

Andrew Tobin

For the wyrd family’s plan: As the kaiju under the city is protecting it, someone from the city killing it would put the city in serious danger. It’s been here for long enough that the tower has started to adjust how it views the β€˜essence’ of the kaiju. Papa wyrd realises this and believes that he can use it as a sacrifice to upgrade his thorns ability such that damage he takes isn’t just reflected to the enemy but also creates destruction upon the power base the attacker has behind them.

Finn

1: Since Lord Wyrd was trying to install his son in Oilton, he could be trying a similar scheme for a different child in Akul as part of a vertical integration takeover of the tower. Possibly an Azula like vamp type character. 2: A pocket watch that dilates it's user's relative time stream. A one use item that when destroyed provides an honest and complete answer to any question. A pair of suspenders that let it's user have complete control of their position in space. I figure that an auction in one of the most prosperous parts of the tower would have some BS OP items. Not that any characters need to gain them, just having them there for atmosphere. 3: tourney arcs are good, but you don't have to show most of the fights. A paragraph skimming most of the relevant fights with cutaways showing fun scenes will suffice. For example, Reggie trying to win Alicia a prize at a rigged fair game, only to have her womp the game with her build and give him a cute stuffed animal.

chris

I think the tournament arc could be an interesting thing from a world building perspective as they are effectively Lord or Vassal candidates right, so seeing the perspectives and builds of Will's peers/rivals, with occasional popping into Wills head for banter or the character humor we love in your stories

GrandSageGand

I love tournament arcs

Apiris

1. They wanna kill the Kaiju contained in the city and use that as a distraction as multiple Kaiju spawn nearby probably to attempt to gain a foothold there 2. I'll let someone else suggest this 3. Only if there's plot relevance or something cool or it's a short like 2 chapter thing, I don't think the story needs a tournament arc quite yet since it has good momentum

EDMANGO

Definitely tournament, tournaments are the best

james apfel

No Problem Thanks for the heads up

Aqat

Totally understandable, there a bit myself. That said... 1# Considering they're already sorta using monsters, or more correctly people made into them, AND we know there have been humanoid kaiju, perhaps they're trying to experiment to create humanoid kaiju loyal to them? 2# An auction with lots of people supplying items is going to have a wild mix of stuff that seems not worthwhile but MIGHT interest someone with weird tastes and stuff everyone wants. Considering the story, I think should focus on the first. I'm thinking something that seems very useful, but has difficult seeming requirements. Maybe something that ups the power of nuke magic, but also makes you suffer the consequences to a large degree yourself. Mason has a build that allows it without dying (considering also the Take One For the Team). 3# 100%
